Topped Out

Call it a top knot, man bun or a "my little pony" it's know all the trend in the city for summer.

In 2012, the NY Times predicted the coming of the top knot, and it looks like summer of 2014 will be the summer of the fun bun.
Then last fall the NY Daily News popped a little celebrity gossip about Jake's top knot at Soul Cycle.

And like the other hipster hair thing (big beards) - Jake gets another mention.

So is Jake a head of the trend again?  (Kale, kombucha, juicing, Soul Cycle, beards)

And does that mean once it gets too mainstream, he'll move on again?

Hey Jake now that George has dragged the faux further into the press to overkill, that means you're moving on too, right?
So this wasn't awkward, was it?

Out Spotlight

Today's Out Spotlight is an author and journalist who regularly appears on national television and whose commentary is featured in major national publications. He is a leading advocate of same-sex marriage, and one of the most influential political writers of his generation.  He is openly gay and a practicing Roman Catholic. Today's Out Spotlight is Andrew Sullivan.

Andrew Sullivan was born in South Godstone, a small town in southern England, August 10, 1963. After earning a B.A. in modern history from Oxford University he received a fellowship to study at Harvard University, where he earned a masters degree in public administration and a Ph.D. in government. He has lived in the United States since 1984.

In 1986, he began at The New Republic (TNR) and in 1991, he was named the magazine's editor, the youngest in its history. In the five years Sullivan was at the helm, the magazine's circulation grew and advertising revenues increased. He expanded TNR's sphere beyond politics to cover such cultural topics as same-sex marriage and affirmative action. He created a stir by publishing excerpts from the controversial study on race and IQ, The Bell Curve.

In the 1990's Sullivan became known for his writing on gay issues. His article "The Politics of Homosexuality" has been called the most influential article of the decade in gay rights. "Virtually Normal: An Argument About Homosexuality" was the first book to advocate civil marriage rights for gay couples. He also published "Love Undetectable: Notes on Friendship, Sex, and Survival" and edited a reader, "Same-Sex Marriage: Pro and Con." Sullivan has gone on to author and edit six books.

As a practicing Catholic, Sullivan has challenged the Roman Catholic Church's position on homosexuality. In Virtually Normal he takes the position that the Bible forbids homosexuality only when it is linked to prostitution or pagan ritual.

His Burkean conservativism is rooted in his British Catholic background and in the political philosophy of his mentor, Michael Oakeshott.

Sullivan started his blog, "The Daily Dish," in 2000. He eventually moved the blog to various publishing platforms, including Time Magazine, The Atlantic, and The Daily Beast. In 2013, he switched to an independent, subscription based format.

His articles have appeared in The New Republic, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Postand Esquire. He is a regular guest on "The Chris Matthews Show," "Charlie Rose," "Anderson Cooper 360°," "Meet The Press," "Face the Nation," Nightline," "NPR's Fresh Air" and "Larry King Live."

He currently serves as a columnist for The Sunday Times of London.

Ross Douthat and Tyler Cowen have suggested that Sullivan is the most influential political writer of his generation, particularly because of his very early and strident support for gay marriage, his pioneering blog, support of the Iraq War, and subsequent support of Barack Obama's candidacy.

Sullivan currently resides in New York and Provincetown, Massachusetts with his husband Aaron Tone.

"The most successful marriages, gay or straight, even if they begin in romantic love, often become friendships. It's the ones that become the friendships that last."

Sherpa Shut It Down

Can you shut down a mountain?  Apparently you can.

On Friday, April 18, there was an avalanche on Everest's southern side that killed 16 Sherpas who were tethered to ropes, preparing the route for mountaineers who were preparing for this year's climb. Thirteen bodies were recovered, and three others were buried under the debris and may never be found.

The Real Deal

Make Your Own Mountain Everest

It  was the worst single day accident in the history of Everest.  It surpasses the tragedy of which Jake's project  is based.

Between 2000 to 2010 only six Sherpas died on the mountain. The number of fatalities has been increasing even before last week's tragedy, with seven Sherpas dying during climbs in 2012 and 2013. The recent increase in fatalities may be due to more people climbing the mountain thus need for more Sherpas.

The Sherpas have closed the 2014  climbing season.

Following a meeting between government officials, Sherpas, and tour operators at Everest base camp, Nepal's tourism ministry said expeditions should proceed.  The Sherpas disagree.  They have said will not guide anyone up the mountain this year.

Forty teams were prepared to ascend Everest this year. As of  this past Thursday, 8 teams have already pulled out.  Most teams are in no mood to climb.  The number of people at the base camp has already fallen from about 600 to 100.

The ministry also announced this season's climbing permits, which cost between $25,000 and $150,000, will be valid for five years.

What impact will this make on Everest?  Will it throw the movie into limbo and push the movie back even farther? Will they try to push through and find someone to guide them?  Will they risk cast and crew?   Will Jake make a movie about Everest without ever put his foot in Nepal?

(So not) Digging their way in China

Yup there's Austin  (and FauxChlo) - so if you don't want to see it - look away now, but really it's like  a school trip and they were the last to on the list and got paired up)

So from that perspective look at it as a giant field trip

Day 1

When the hoods up it's the sign for no more chatting.  This is going to be a long trip.   Maybe I could get another plane.

Who's got the best set of curves? Me!  Yes Shakira, Shakira .  Theses hips don't lie.

This is going to be a long trip.  Maybe a hipcheck and I can bump her into another travel group.

Day 2
Is she really singing about dumplings?  I'll just ignore her and maybe she'll stop.
This is going to be a long trip.  Maybe I can get on the other bus.

Day 3
Look who got the sassy pink candle - Me!
While I'm  all cute and coy.   She's being that loud girl no one wants to sits next to on the tour bus.   Still looking to switch to the B bus.

Day 4
This is when a five-head comes in handy you can squeeze everyone else out of the picture.

Yeah me!!

Day 5 (well it seems like 5 or maybe Day 45)
No you're not even close being Toothy.

And no I'm not tell you that you have seaweed and sesame seeds between your teeth.

It's not just these pants that are uncomfortable and ill fitting.

The picture trip chaperones made us take for the safety sheets.
Eww girl cooties!  I hear there's a seat on the other bus if I am willing to sit next to the onboard bathroom and with no leg room.

Onward to the other bus!  YES!

While we can make fun and say it's a school field trip, it seriously looks more like a promotional trip for FauxChlo.

Really, who's traveling with them taking these pictures?  And who's releasing them?  Because only 2 of the pack were on FauxChlo's instagram.
Ahhh yes - that would be the publicist's job.
