Natural Selection

Pushing past all the spin and buzz and smoke and mirrors, Rendition premieres in Toronto and brings with it an important and topical message. Not about co-stars, billing or Oscar contention, or the social political dialog about the War on Terror, but a message about the gray area of left and right and right and wrong. And more importantly, how there are no easy answers.

This seems to be a pattern in Jake's movie career. If we look at Jake's past few movies, we see this in the characters and stories he's chosen. From Jarhead to Brokeback to Rendition, and even in Zodiac, no easy answers or in some cases no answers at all. Movies that show that there is no right answer or no perfect ending that wraps up all the lose ends. Movies that are more like real life than escapism of Hollywood fantasy. Movies that you have more questions when leaving the theater than you did when you came in. Kind of the way Jake is to many of his fans right now.

Are Jake's movie choices showing us a reflection of him? Or is he a reflection of his movie choices?

To answer your question, Spesh, I think Jake's movie choices are a reflection of him. I think he is drawn to films and roles that have no easy answers, where things are cloudy, etc. I think the reason he's drawn to these roles is because most of life is lived in the gray areas, and Jake understands this.

  2. "Have your #2 pencil and notebook ready to take notes for next week at TIFF?"

Yes, Special K - So shall it be said, so shall it be done.

Jake's movie choices are not a reflection of him, IMO. The vice-versa is also not true. Instead, the films are a reflection of his talent and creativity. The real actor should be a able to create a myriad of illusions. Both grandiose and mundane. And Jake never fails to deliver.

  3. AG I have sent two comments to Ted which are simply amazing. Like I said if one gets published I am a Prince and get to make out with Prince Harry if both get published I am King and get to make out with a future King. William! Wow!

  5. I love Jake's movie choices - they seem to be either quirky and unusual, ask really interesting questions, or make compelling social statements. This is a big part of why I love Jake and hope for his continued success. I'm sure Rendition will be another great film.

  6. Great post Special.

To answer your question Jake once said he pays attention to the script first and foremost and that he’s quite demanding in this department (as the worthy son of scriptwriter mom and director pop). I think if he was offered a movie with the kind of perfect/no-lose-ends ending that you mention but with impeccable story, character & writing, he would have a go at it.

On the other hand he also admitted being attracted to movies that resonate with his own feelings/experiences (on that subject, he even went as far as expressing doubts about his own acting range!) He often comes across as a sensitive guy so it’s likely that, like wicked says, he understands that most of life is lived in the gray areas and has little interest for any one-dimensional vision. Therefore it’s quite possible also that his movie choices are a refection of him.

Then there is HW and its fondness for packaging. Jake wants to do a comedy. He also loves musicals (remember his extensive and fruitless auditions for Moulin Rouge?). And tell me if my memory is playing tricks here but didn’t he say also that he’d loved to do a great romantic movie? Will he ever be given the opportunity to do any of those? He still doesn’t have the leeway nor the opportunities of a Leo or a Brad so I can’t say that he’s truly a reflection of his movie choices (did I get that second question right? LOL).

  7. And tell me if my memory is playing tricks here but didn’t he say also that he’d loved to do a great romantic movie?

I don't think so, but he did say something nice about The Notebook.

  8. IMO, we will only know what Jake actually reflects when he directs a film or a play. Until then, we will only know how deftly he disappears into a character that is quite different from his own. However, based on his choices, I would say he is a thoughtful artist and an intelligent performer trying to discover his limits, and ultimately, seek a niche for himself. But, to extrapolate his choice of films and predict his outlook towards life and living is too far-fetched, IMO. But, then Special K, pardon me; I am not a romantic.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Thanks who'sthat. Mentions of a romantic comedy probably mingled with "romantic lead" in my mind. :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. I am not saying that this indicative of his whole career, or his future. I just found it interesting the types of roles and movies chosen the past few years.

Just as Jake grows and matures both personally and professionally so will his interests and his choices.

From the beginning of his career really starting with October Sky to date he brings an honesty integrity to his work. I think it is that honesty, that I see as a reflection. The best acting come from truth.

I think Jake taps into truth for each of his roles. I do admit I can romanticize things, so the part of truth that I think he uses, might not be the part of truth he actually does use.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I would say he is a thoughtful artist and an intelligent performer trying to discover his limits...

(...) so the part of truth that I think he uses, might not be the part of truth he actually does use.

    Interesting comments rattler and spesh.

Does anybody remember this interview in which Jake said he did films that were close to what he knew/was/felt (whatever) and questioned his own acting range? I think it was done during the Zodiac promo either in the US or in Europe. Couldn't find it at IHJ and trying to get the damn thing through Google but apparently I haven’t found the magical words yet. :(

  12. I'll add that in a way we are truly seeing one side of Jake through his movies, namely his political and social awareness.

  22. I agree with Frenchy that Jake has certainly revealed a lot of his political views and social values to us through his choice of roles. And a lot of that has been reinforced by the statements he’s made in his interviews. What his roles have not really revealed to me, at least not in the movies I’ve seen, is that fun-loving and silly side of Jake that we’ve seen in his interviews and in his photos. I, for one, would love to see him in a comedic role, or, better yet, a well-done romantic comedy. I think he has an innate appreciation of the absurd, the comedic timing and the gorgeous looks that would make him irresistible. He now has enough serious roles behind him to do a romantic comedy without getting typecast. My only fear is that he would become such a sensation that he would find it even more difficult to come out, even though I think success should make it easier.

Dont wanna look like the fools they have been. Jeese is a big time joke.

    ReplyDelete

I think many would agree with you about Jeese. I think the press would be relentless, because the jig is up.

Hey can we add your name for on the party list?

  30. I miss the old Jake who seemed to love to take part in interviews. Too bad things had to change.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I do too Joker. And honestly I think Jake does too. I think he does miss that, he always had a lot of fun.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well, sadly I think Jake has been pretty burned by the press recently. The GQ interview comes to mind. And yes a lot of it would focus on Jeese and/or the gay rumors and not the movie. I imagine Jake doesn't want to be considered a joke when he wants people to appreciate his movies.

    ReplyDelete
  33. TBS

    Very good points.

I also think that they don't want to say something in an interview that would have recant later.

Joker wrote: I miss the old Jake who seemed to love to take part in interviews. Too bad things had to change.

Thanks for the news Suspicious tb.

Hello joker! Always good to see you around. :) I’m with you on this. I did not expect them to go to such… “extremes”. :( I was expecting separate interviews albeit within strict guidelines. They could have done it without diverting people’s attention from Rendition IMO and they have sufficient power to make questions of a personal nature totally off limit. Somehow I think this kind of avoidance tactic will only feed rumors, which may be what they’re trying to achieve in the end.

Oh well, maybe I’m being too cynical or reading too much into it.

Given the fact that Rendition will probably raise lots of questions of a political nature, they might have wanted to stick to ensemble interviews in order to minimize the risks of sticking their foot in their mouth. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  35. About Heath and Michelle. They were already calling them kaput at FCC on August 19. They think Mathilda is being shuttled back and forth between LA and NYC. Sad.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Frenchy, maybe that is what will go on. That they will have ensenble interviews, not individual ones. Maybe, Jake, Peter and Reese?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well tbs, Thompson mentions "the press conference" only. Jake and Reese will most certainly be there, along with GH. Peter? Not sure.

    What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Frenchy, not sure but I think they will all be at the press conference, Jake, Peter, Reese and Gavin. Maybe even Allen Arkin? Meryl is listed as not attending the TIFF, sadly.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Too bad for Meryl... I have a soft spot for Allan Arkin so I hope he'll show up.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Maybe the reason Jake doesn't want to do the one-on-one interviews is because he wants to keep as much free time as possible just in case he gets an emergency phone call
    *wink, wink*
He couldn't answer that one during an interview and even if they took a break, do you really think he would be saying anything else but "I'm a dad, I'm a dad!" to anyone that will listen?

    ReplyDelete
  41. This is perfect. They are not avoiding one on one because the jig is up, by doing this it will just been seen as them wanting to kep their privacy and laso not to distract from the film which is legit.

If they thought the jig was up I think by now they would have already issued a they are just friends statement and be done with it but they aren't done with it. When they "broke up" in June they should have stayed that way because by now they would be in the we are still friends mode but then decided to have them reunite and spend their vacation in MV. Obviously they think it's still working and the cat and mouse act will continue in Toronto, another plus: The spin that they are only doing this for the movie, it appears not therefore making them seem more real. Smart PR move.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 8:39

Thanks for contributing really good points to the discussion of the Rendition/TIFF PR plan.

A name is so much nicer than a number, is there one we can call you?

    ReplyDelete
  43. "Smart PR move."

Maybe jake and reese have decided that themselves

    Liz

    ReplyDelete
  44. Copy/paste from WFT:

"The interviews could be conducted in a manner that no information about personal life was brought to light. Questions submitted beforehand, plug ready to pull should the reporter cross the line. It's what Jake did in Cannes - no personal questions.

Actually, one sentence is all that needs to be released - We are/are not together. That would calm the frenzy down to a dull roar.

Canceling already scheduled interviews reeks of the suspicion that someone will say something that somebody doesn't want to be heard. Can smell PR's fear from here."

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks whos'that.

Suspicious move or savvy PR tactic? Maybe I was not that cynical in my previous post.

These interviews were not scheduled months in advance when Jeese was non-existent. Whoever is behind this knew what they would achieve: bringing more attention to Jeese all the while making them look totally professional (respect for movie/director) and so classy and honest compared to your usual tabloid fodder (when we said private folks, we meant it).

Given Jake’s highly political upbringing and family I was so looking forward to his take on the issues tackled in Rendition. God how I hate it when they play games like this! :(

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think that the press conference will focus on the message of the movie and attempt to temper the spin swirling around its co-stars.

From what I have read that Gavin Hood has created a look at this political thorn in the side from many angles and how this affects all those involved to varying degrees and the far reaching implications of rendition. Sadly, I think this is a topic that very few know much about and that is is currently happening into today's political atmosphere. Never acknowledged and barely ever mentioned, all in the name of the greater good.

I hope Gavin's work is not overshadow by events swirling around it. There is a real message to this movie. What ever side of the aisle you sit on politically.

I think Jake, Reese, Peter, Alan and Meryl and everyone who worked on Rendition are proud of the movie and the work they did, and believe the message that Gavin has told. It would be a shame if that will be overshadowed.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I wonder if they'll do the same trick during the US promotion.

I want to hear Jake's POV on this movie.

  48. Story of Rendition of an American citizen

I met Sabri when he spoke at our church right before his sentencing. He was studying abroad and was first picked up by the Saudi government. He thought he was in good hands when the US got a hold of him. He ended up being tortured and accused of crimes he was eventually acquitted of. Because the government could not get any of the charges to stick, they brought him back in to testify before another grand jury and he was charged and convicted of perjury. It seems amazing to me that someone can be convicted of perjury for saying he had not done something he was acquitted of doing! Our church is partnering with the mosque Sabri and his family attend, Dar-al-Hijrah, to try and assist him with the appeal. Sabri's father spoke at our church this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wow Wicked.

That is scary. That, that can happen to a US citizen in the US.

An aside: I know several Government Document Specialists and they always get a little paranoid by all the classified documents they are privy too and can never discuss.

    ReplyDelete
  50. This story sends a chill down my spine wicked. My thoughts and prayers are with Sabri and his family. I can't imagine the terror one must feel when he realizes he's become just a crumb in that big legal and political monster's jaw.

I think your church is doing the right thing.

  51. That is scary. That, that can happen to a US citizen in the US.

It also happens to Canadian citizens. As North-Americans we mistakenly take our freedom and rights for granted.

  52. I read about Sabri and then all these endless discussions about Jeese suddenly seem all too silly to me.

    ReplyDelete
  53. It puts it all in perspective doesn't it Rattler.

I hope that people will go and see Rendition. Maybe it will spark good open discussions about what is really going on.

It is easy for Americans to point fingers at practices of other governments, when sometimes we need to stop and hold a mirror up to our own.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yes, Special K. As usual you write so eloquently. I am glad that we have amongst us such thoughtful individuals like Wicked and Frenchy (she was the one who had mentioned the case of Maher Arar a while ago), whose comments not only enlighten, but also remind us that some times we behave like shallow humans insensitive to RL problems. I will watch Rendition with a new light on Friday. Thanks to OMG for reminding me to do so.
But then I will try to have some fun too :) It is Friday, and it is hard to stay away from red, red wine.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Here's the really sad thing, guys- Sabri was sent to a maximum security prison in Ohio and is in solitary confinement. His family all live in VA and it will be hard for them to visit him.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Special K: Pardon me for enjoying little pleasures of life. I just found that JJ's post on Jake has been removed from his website, and I can not but hide my glee.
IMO, we should not fight our personal demons by living vicariously through another life. We should only battle them on our own.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Rattler

Life is suppose to be enjoyed and savored, and the little pleasure are the ones most enjoyed!

I will say it again. Something that is as personal and important as coming out is up to each person in their own time and in their own way.

For those in Hollywood it is not on the public's, nor management's, nor friends', nor family's timelines ... it is only up to that person to decide when they are ready.

I think many would agree that who a person loves does not define a who they are; but it is person they are, that people love them for, that defines them.

  62. I hope so too, special. I hate when people are trying to "out" someone. I wish of all my heart jj`s story will fade away so Jake and Austin will not feel forced if they one day make the choice to tell the world how much they love eachother. I want it to be their choice only.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Special, I too hope they are leaning on each other. I also hope whatever decision they make it is something they both want.

I do think Jake being press shy means something. I'm not sure what, but I could understand if he is scared. Its hard to laugh off the truth [reminds me of the dream I had recently where he was nervously trying to avoid being asked THE question].

I thought that this crap would have legs even though it was confiend to the blogs as per usual. And the blogs treated it as a joke as it should have and if you read teh snarky comments at X17 you get the same gist. Still curious to know why the bigger blogs like Perez, Jared and TMZ didn't bother.

The reason why that shit was launched was to get the TT rumors to hit the mainstream but why did they choose that bafoon JJ is still a mystery.

BTW, JJ and the interns at In Touch found out that the "source" was full of shit and was just repeating/embellishing BI's.

I think this is going to be moving fast and furious, I am not sure if management 1)expected this to happen like this 2)that it would spread as far and as fast 3)that it would becoming something that they would be scrambling to catch.

Is this going to become their Wag the Dog? Or has already become that?

  85. NW is one of the rags that pushed Reese carrying Jake's love child back before the first 'break-up'. Not to be taken seriously, of course, 'cause they got the BF wrong, but it is interesting that this story has crossed International waters.

The story finally made it to the printed media. What are the odds of a US tab picking it up?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Not important at all, but the story reached the biggest gossip-magazine in Norway and Denmark friday(se og hør). They had Austin as the boyfriend. I was a little surprised actually, as the norwegian version had never touched the "Jake might be gay" subject before. Don`t know if the rumores have yet reached "se og hør" in Sweden.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Well NG they got the BF right! :D

    ReplyDelete
  89. I'm sorry to burst your bubble but NW has done Jake is gay stories before. Last year they did one linking him to Austin complete with the BB pics. Earlier this year UK OK did a simillar story. Several S. American sites and a few rags reported the TMZ story in April, and you know what? It died. Nobody cared then and they don't care now especially Jake's PR who I assume are laughing their asses off like the rest of the blogs did last week. Nothing better to discredit something than to post the most outrageous gossip.

This doesn't have legs and you know it so stop spinning. It didn't work this time, all that plotting. It sort of reminds of Last year when tha asshole at d-listed, Michael K tried to do the same thing, pitiful.

I can just picture me twitching in frustration evertime she hits that ggogle alert button, hoping People, Us or some , OMG main stream rag will pick it up. If they didn't last week they sure in hell aren't a week later just because some Aussie and Norwegian rag picked it up now lets get real ladies. It didn't work.

PS: Very Telling: None of the major gossip blogs touched it, poor JJ, hee.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Poor JJ?!? You are joking, right?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Tell me, 7:30, how's that misogyny working out for you? Get many dates with that attitude?

What is even more telling is your need to jump at every mention of this JJ, wherever it is. Jump, pounce, throw your desperate body across on the chance that someone might form an opinion counter to yours. If a TBer is watching Google, so what? It's their time to spend. You, however, are even more obsessed because you come to a blog devoted to a subject that you despise to post and post and post condescending insults and arrogant assumptions.

Perhaps you are so frantic because, despite your JiS campaign these long months, ne years, there are still many, MANY, MANY people who believe Jake is gay. And you know what? That number is growing every day, and you can't do anything about it.

    Drives you nuts, doesn't it?

For Mad as Hell, go to the window and yell it!!! : ) And you don't have to take it anymore. ; )

Remember we expect people to come and do this.

As things unfold this will happen more. As much as we want to react and confront them, that is exactly what they want us to do. To drag us away from our focus.

We are here to support Jake and Austin. They need our support more this week and the coming weeks than they ever have. We need to stay on course with that.

And feeding the trolls just gets them bloated and leads to them belching up all kinds of nasty.

  93. My apologies, Special.

In the future, I will refrain from engaging the Trolls. Instead, I will just sit back, laugh and be secure in the knowledge of Jake and Austin.

    PS I voted for JFC!

  94. Hey we all have those moments I too forget and to do it.
I am just being selfish and just don't want to clean up after the troll belches it all up.

Hey sit back, we can have Isaac deliver a nice delicious drink for you to enjoy.

I think we might have to pull the deck chairs back out on the Leedo deck. : )

  95. More Toothy Mail. Sadly Tom's was not favored by Ted this week. Meaning Wicked doesn't have to drive to New Jersey now. : )

    Dear Ted:
Has Toothy Tile been uncovered yet? My money's on Wentworth Miller.
    Meg
    Bridgewater, New Jersey

    Dear Don't Bet on It:
Went's not our boy, babe. He's almost as cute as Toothy, though.

    Dear Ted:
I think Toothy Tile is Mark Ruffalo. He's married, and he's worked with some pretty big names doing romantic comedies, yet you really never hear about his private life.
    Pat
    San Diego

    Dear Mouthy Maven:
'Fraid not, sweetie. Think even more boy next door.

    Dear Ted:
Toothy Tile equals Owen Wilson? Just asking.
    Kathy
    Milwaukee

    Dear Missing Tooth:
Not quite, darling. Def less comedic 'n' of a slightly younger set.

...And here's a mojito, for you, MAH, to chillax :)

  97. Will that be a Red Red wine for you Rattler?

  98. This is quite telling with JJ's outing and Wenty's pictures last week

Even if I didn't think it was JG Ted's comments today would make me think of him.

Special, thanks for your attitude to the Jack troll. I've noticed elsewhere that this works, much as one sometimes yearns to engage :)

The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that JJ was instructed by E!'s legal team to remove the post.

  100. Did JJ remove the whole post about Jake? If he did, the post is back, though the photos are not there.

  101. He also says some things have been changed but I didn't see any changes, apart from absent photos.

    How odd!

  102. Explained on WFT, thanks to poster there. The TT connections were removed.

  103. Wicked's not off the hook yet. Ted's interns answered the mailbag letters this week. Maybe Ted instructed them to save any letters from Tom for him. :)
