I"m going to essentially post here what I did on WFT, something I never do. I'm sitting here looking at these pictures while watching a re-broadcast of Jake on SNL and the contrast with the "old" Jake is startling. While I think the pictures in of themselves are kind of beautiful, I find them a bit disturbing at the same time (except for the bike photo). I can't put into words why, and maybe it is just because it is late and I'll feel differently in the morning. And Jake doesn't look particularly happy in them.
I think Jake looks wistful in these shots and very serious.
To me photoshoots are supposed to be about fantasy. They aren't supposed to depict your real life unless yours is the house being featured in In Style or something similar.
I think they just wanted an earthy feel and for Jake to look like a man, not a little boy. He will be 27 by the end of this year. He's growing up and he's moving in to the next stage of his career.
Also his life. Whether you believe he's involved with a soon to be divorcee or about to start a family with a bf, or just moving up that commitment to the bf, or not involved with anyone at the moment, he seems to have left that little boy behind him for good.
I think these pictures are a true reflection of that.
About the only crime is that he looks so ordinary. But maybe that's part of the plan. He wants to be known for his work and if he wants longevity in HW, he's going to have to still get parts whilst growing and looking older. And more likely than not, start to lose some of his looks.
Actually he still looks like a boy in the boat shot.
But I definitely can't describe him as beautiful looking in any of the pictures. The cover shot is the best but still far off of beautiful. Whereas in most photos of him, his beauty shines out far greater. His beauty is somewhat muted here, which may be very deliberate.
In the meantime, I'll keep looking at the picture directly under the post of House of Usher. That's beauty beyond words for me.
I agree Jake always looks his best without the beard. I also noticed that the collar of his t-shirts look bent out of shape like someone has been pulling them off his back. Perhaps a tall handsome Texan?
But like I said over at WFT I don't think these pictures tell us anything particularly interesting about Jake personally. They're all about Seliger's vision, nothing else.
I consider these shots of Jake stunningly beautiful. If you can't see the beauty in his face and that perfect body then I don't know what beauty is. That face is amazing with those lips and eyes and hair. All a a total package of beauty to me. He has grown up and this reflects that. I appreciate that.
Heph, all I see in that cover picture are Jake's amazing blue eyes and luscious lips. Perfection to me. Maybe if you click to make it bigger you will see. I see no weaknesses. Guess I am in the minority of loving these pictures.
Part of your job entails working with celebrities - any interesting encounters?
Nobody is more down-to-earth and genuinely cool than Jake Gyllenhaal. I just like him a lot personally. I feel that he has not been affected much by stardom.
For a child, an ordinary man can be an extraordinary father. One who is fun to go out fishing with, one who will hold the bike before a fall, one who tells awesome stories by the oars on a boat, and one who teaches how to set up a bonfire.
I find that sometimes Jake can have a slightly bug eyed look. And sometimes one eye apears larger than the other.
The nose also appears larger in some pics than others.
I think that the beard often softens those effects.
But, I'm also the one who didn't see the appeal of Jake until BBM. Before he did absolutely nothing for me. I guess the pics I don't care for are the ones that remind me of the preBBM Jake pics.
Also, I'm not crazy about the short hair. I'd love to see Jake with long hair. With that gorgeous thick hair of his...mmmmm :)
Anyway, jmo. I love the other pics, just not thrilled with the cover.
I understand your points, Heph and agree with the facial features in certain pics. But I don't see any bug eyes or big nose on the cover. I personally appreciate that he has facial imperfections. His eyes and lips say it all, imo. And I do like his hair this way. Although I do agree that he has gorgeous longer, luscious hair. I also love the scruff. So again I am in the minority. ;)
I agree with those that say there's something a little souless in these shots, and while I don't think that result was intentional, I do think the photographer was aiming for a consistent look from Jake where only the clothing and surroundings changed. I think he was going for Serious Jake shots with a bit of playfulness thrown in (the fishing shot in particular). To me they look like modern, ironic portraits, purposely not giving much away, or even pictures from some timeless department store catalogue. I think of Interview magazine, created by Andy Warhol, after all, whom I love, and I think you're always going to get not quite what you expect. Not always playing up to a star's strengths and attractive features. Again, I don't think the photographer was looking to wash Jake out looks-wise, but that he did want a theme carried out.
I can appreciate what was being done here (and I don't know if I can even say the serious tone was in aid of anything - really), but for people who are aware of and appreciate what Jake has, it's incredible to note what happens when you shut down his eyes. His mouth, too, but especially his eyes. If you turn them off and let his face go slack and expressionless, it doesn't always make for the best pictures - again, for those that notice. Jake doesn't have perfect looks, which is something that drew me to him, but not every angle or idea used works for him.
Overall, I'm not crazy about these pictures, but I can appreciate the ideas and the magazine they appear in, which I think you have to automatically realise is going to weild something subversive - good or bad. I think the chopping wood one is the most interesting. I like his pose and his hands. There's something of the Jake we know creeping out of there. Nature and Jake is a combination I love, too, but in another photo shoot I'd let him meld with the landscape more.
Speaking of hands, one professional shot of Jake that hasn't captured him quite as well since it was taken is his portrait for Vanity Fair taken by Annie Leibowitz. We could see in the video how long it appeared to take to get the shot (even changing the colour of his t-shirt), but the resulting picture, with so much of his open hand turned to the viewer and his face serious, but relaxed, effusive and capturing about five different elements that are essentially Jake was astonishing. Like all art, photography is so delicate and it's amazing and I would agree sometimes even unsettling what a different photographer can render from the same subject.
I like these pictures - he looks gorgeous and I love the short hair. He does have some imperfections and I think they make him more beautiful. Now to read the interview :)
Any photographer has a theme or story that they want to convey to their audience. These are not just random snaps in different settings. You have to step back and look at what is it that brings these pictures together. What are they, as a group, telling you.
Rattler you might be onto something because you were looking at on them on the whole. Could it be the iconic images of a father?
Fishing, riding a bike, camping, these are activities lend themselves to a fatherly image. Or what we have been taught to see as fatherly activities.
Or BLTB, could it be modern ironic portraits of a what society perceives of a father?
The picture and story should work together, in some way to compliment the other. I am interested in the interview and what both it and the pictures present to the readers.
I think like many things that are related to Jake, they lead to multiple interpretations.
I think the nature of Interview (magazine), is that they are more ironic.
But again I want to see them in the context of the interview. You can interpret pictures one way without seeing the accompanying copy. That can change completely when the copy and the photos are married together on the page.
I think the pics are beautiful, the only thing I am not particularly keen about is that Jake seem to have the same expression. As for Jake looking so ordinary, ag, I totally disagree with you. I also don't see as necessary for Jake to lose his looks while aging. In fact, I doubt he will.
I will immediately agree. Ironic portraitures of a virile yet single young man. One who is amongst wilderness, alone, being a father to an unborn child - looking directly but dispassionately, having no intention to invoke the feelings of lust and desire.
Had a dream last night I was talking to Jake (or interviewing him) at a bar or lounge. I asked him about being gay and he immediately corrected me saying he was bisexual. This word was really stressed, and the impression was it was important the distinction be made. I'm not sure how this relates to what's happening with Jake, but it may either be the source of some of his confusion, or perhaps one reason he doesn't want to come out is because he feels his sexuality will not be accurately described. Anyway, it was interesting, and the positive part was he was okay with people knowing he was bi, as long as the description of his sexuality was accurate.
I think the photos are intriguing...and I'm amazed at all the interpretations I've read already from fans. Seems people see a lot of different things in these pics. Interview magazine rocks!
I agree that without the interview it's tricky to decipher what the photographer and/or Jake and/or Jake's team were trying to achieve with these pics.
I'm not particularly fond of them. Jake looks terrific (you know I love him with short hair) but he reminds me of those models used in high-end sporting good catalogs: extremely handsome but seemingly clueless about the proper use of the props they're holding (ax and fishing rod in this particular case). That's pretty much all the vibes I "get" right now from this photoshoot.
I've stopped buying Interview long ago but I remember an ENORMOUS mag(approx. 18" x 14") often featuring gorgeous B&Ws, among them a memorable session with Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix.
TBS, I'm not really looking at the body here. I am always far more interested in people's faces and their personalities.
With an actor, that extends to what we can get of their personalities.
But Jake's face usually radiates off the page. I think he has one of the most beautiful faces in HW. It's one of the things that appeals most to me about him.
Just not evident in these photos.
The losing some his looks thing will depend on which side of the family he takes after. If he takes after his dad, he should be okay. But not everyone can have Keanu (Peter Pan) genes.
It's always fascinating to find out which particular pic(s) people prefer. Some love the wood-chopping one while I personally think it's the worst of the lot! :D
Ag, see I think his face looks amazingly beautiful here. I see him and his face as growing and changing. I see a man in those eyes and I appreciate that. I clicked on the cover shot and still saw those amazing baby blues coming at me with life. He is not a boy anymore and I think this reflects that. If that is muted then I am okay with that. It was the same with the GQ shots. It has been disappointing to see some of the harsh reaction to these pics. As if Jake has to be in some box that he can only look or take pictures a certain way. I don't see it that way. I see this as another photo shoot that most actors/celebs/models do. Yet I see this as unique to Jake with the outdoors, bike, etc. With Jake's special beauty, sexiness and life infused in it. JMO.
The use of the natural light is great, especially in the fishing and the boat pictures. The backlighting of Jake from the late day sun, the low soft light and the reflection off the water creates view different look.
When looking at Selinger's other pictures, this does have a softer finish in comparison to the sharp contrast you see in much of his work.
The photos look very staged to me - I think Frenchy described it best as similar to those pics of models posing with unfamiliar props for a high-end sporting catalog. Maybe that's the intention. I, personally, prefer a photo that captures the essence of a person, sometimes through just the tiniest change in facial expression. The interesting thing is that the biking photo, though also staged, captures something very animalistic and magnetic about Jake that is missing entirely from the other photos. I think this photo is beyond beautiful and is one of the best of him I've ever seen. I'm very curious now to read the article to see if these photos complement it in some way. If they don't, then I certainly hope they are meant to be ironic.
One the bike is not a prop but something he is familiar with, almost an extension of himself.
Secondly what really makes the bike picture different and draws you in, it is dynamic vs. static, there is action in the picture, capturing Jake as he is walking toward the camera.
The bike shot is the best and most beautiful. The light is almost ethereal (sp?) and he has such a serene expression on his face. Special, I agree that the bike is part of him so I think that comes through in the shot.
The bike shot is the only shot that is Jake. I dont know who the other guys are? But I am not sure I am speaking about the Jake I want him to be or who he is though. Jake is an actor I am only a dreamer. I hope Jake is a dreamer also. I hope Jake's dream is the same as mine.
One the bike is not a prop but something he is familiar with, almost an extension of himself.

I totally agree with you Special. And if I'm not mistaken I think the bike pic is unanimously loved by fans, whether tbs or not. The camera loves Jake and on this pic Jakes gives back the love.
When you use your Blogger name you can delete your own posts but not correct them! Although multi-talented Jake's still only one individual so please disregard the "s" in his name above.
I have to say, I do like these pics but yeah they do look staged.
Also I am not sure why some of you think Jake fishing or Jake chopping wood is not Jake. The fact that Jake likes rowing, appear to have friends who are farmers, goes to Manka on vacation (have you ever been there?) shows he has an inclination for the outdoors, so these pics don't strike me as clashing with his personality. JMO.

ReplyDeleteBut the others are gorgeous. Esp.ly the boat and bike pics.
