The reason Ted writes BIs is because he thinks he will get in trouble if he uses the real names. Obviously, he now feels he can write about J&A by name now without getting in trouble. Did he get a green light from PR? From J&A? I don't know, but he must think he talk about them openly now.
ReplyDeleteHave a great time at the get-together. :)
ReplyDeleteWishing you the same - I did on the previous thread but I'm not sure how coherent I was :D
ReplyDeleteMy computer is finally resurrected from virus hell, and I come back to find Jake and Austin holding hands in the West Village.
ReplyDeleteSweet Jesus!
Guess my on-line absences should be more frequent if returning brings such squee worthy news.
I would be more than willing to sacrifice the whole damn thing, hard drive and all, to produce a Jake and Austin holding hands picture.
Have a blast this weekend, youse guys! To be there wishes for sure!
^ Yeah, have loads of drinks on our behalf including that Wimbledon summer favourite, Pimms No. 1 Cup :D
ReplyDeleteI have a request - Land of a Thousand Words, please *
ReplyDelete*beaming*
*still not functioning*
Have to add that as skinny as he is, Austin does have a perfectly round butt.
ReplyDeleteRound globes. Hmm.

I think many would say there is a difference between Jake's interviews at TIFF and this week's interviews. I wonder if having some Lone Star charm with you makes the difference. ; )
ReplyDeleteI knew exactly what was meant when I read "digital dancing". I've done it myself. You kinda let your fingers touch lightly and stroke, but stop short of holding hands. And you kid yourself that other people haven't spotted the obvious body language ;-)
ReplyDeleteI guess that's why Jake and Austin do everything to stop themselves being papped. The body language is too obvious. Cute they still have that love/lust for each other.
I'm going on the assumption this sighting is true, but a picture of Jake and Austin in NY would be helpful. Not doing any "digital dancing", just being in the same city!
Yep especially considering Reese is now there too and will be in Rome and all the Jeese crap will start up again.
ReplyDeleteI haven't stopped grinning since I read this newest sighting from Ted. I've had this feeling that Austin was in NYC this week - I really hope it's true.
ReplyDeleteTwo things:
Ted has to get approval from E!'s legal dept. before he posts his column so that makes me believe that this sighting is absolutely true and comes from a very reliable source.
It also, once and for all, proves that Austin is the bf. :)
I'd now love to see any photo of Austin in NYC even if he's without Jake. I'm also getting excited about the thought that A may be on his way to Rome with J.
me too... i have a gut feeling that Austin might be joining Jake to Rome (has he finished filming FNL though? lol).... remember Jake was acting quite giddy when he said he's going to Rome in a few days when he's on Regis.
ReplyDeleteWhen does Austin start filming for "The Informers?"
ReplyDeleteHave a great time. Wish I could be there. We are going Friday. Can't wait.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right BV. The only way Ted could get in trouble is if it wasn't true. And to address Press Now's comment in the previous thread, you're absolutely right about Ellen, I wasn't thinking rationally after all of the excitement this week. :-) Also, the more I think about it, I think it is more likely Ted just figured he was going to stop supporting the double standard of reporting if people are seen engaging in pdas in public (and he's certain of the source). I've always had mixed feeling about that. On the one hand it lets people have some opportunity to live normally, on the other it is just enabling the whole sad HW system. Ultimately I think if gossip writer are going to make up stories, then why shouldn't Ted report on something going on in public.
ReplyDeleteCall me crazy. But I think that Ted was given some type of "ok/blessing" to divulge this info. From Ted's history he would never publish something this close to an outing without the knowledge/permission of those he was disclosing.
ReplyDeleteThe point about legal issues is well taken. Ted cannot publish his column without E!'s legal team vetting it first. They obviously okayed it. And now it's on the E! homepage?! Whoa!
ReplyDeleteGOLD STARS to Kate at WDW
ReplyDeleteFor putting up interview with Jake on "This Morning" (UK)
WDW - Jake on "This Morning"(UK)
Too good and one interview at TIFF that had Jake in stitches.
Alison (the interviewer) is hilarious... and Jake was so naughty to come back with "am I dating Merly"? LOL....
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful time this week-end guys! I'm going Friday and I'll be thinking of you while watching Rendition's beard-free Jake. ;)
ReplyDelete(Still no use, that wide stupid grin's still firmly stuck on my mouth this morning... (sigh))
OT: DListed put up photos of Winona Ryder shooting scenes from "The Informers" in LA yesterday. OMG! She looks like Nancy Reagan in those shots!! http://www.dlisted.com/node/16742
ReplyDelete(Still no use, that wide stupid grin's still firmly stuck on my mouth this morning... (sigh))
ReplyDeleteSame here, Frenchy! Oh My Godot . . . it's great!
Likewise! I can't stop grinning every time I think about the "accidental" bumping into each other.
ReplyDelete"J.G. and his gorgeous amigo, a dead ringer for Austin Nichols"
ReplyDeleteYes, he is gorgeous. Nice to know that Ted thinks so too.
I keep returning to normal then remembering and doing the stupid grin :) :)
ReplyDeleteA couple interesting tidbits about Jake from the Washington Post
ReplyDelete^^ˇˇ
ReplyDeleteFavorite place on Earth: The cliffs of Gay Head near Martha's Vineyard.
:)
Gay Head is now know as Aquinnah. The name changed in 1998.
ReplyDeleteAquinnah-Gay Head Cliffs
Little FYI: The cliffs/beach are one of the few nude beaches left in the US.
Little FYI: The cliffs/beach are one of the few nude beaches left in the US.
ReplyDeleteJake, you baddie!
special k said...
ReplyDeleteLittle FYI: The cliffs/beach are one of the few nude beaches left in the US.
Now not so much
They're really trying to make Moshup Beach (the beach at the base of the Gay Head Cliffs) a little more family and clothing friendly.
The Gay Head cliffs/beach are one of my favorite places also. I can see the road leading from Chilmark to Aquinnah and the cliffs as a great biking route for Jake. It's very hilly and scenic so it provides a great workout. And once you get there the view of the cliffs, lighthouse and scenery is spectacular.
ReplyDeleteThe first time I ever visited MV, I was looking down at the little section of beach that you can see from the cliff lookout area and could have sworn that I saw a naked guy diving into the water. My friend insisted that I was seeing things. I found out later that it was a nude beach.
The light is spectacular at the cliffs. Breathtaking.
ReplyDeleteToonces! lol! Oh, that is great, hehe. I used to love that sketch, too. The best part was Toonces' face right before he'd crash or drive off a cliff, hehe. I grinned at his ipod choices, too. :D
ReplyDeletebroadway fan asked - When does Austin start filming for "The Informers?"
ReplyDeleteI haven't got a definitive answer from that one yet but if he is involved in the storylines of Mickey Rourke or Ashley Olsen, they are meant to be filming in Uruguay from early November (according to IMDB)
Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder and Billy Bob Thornton are all currently working on the movie in LA and Brandon Routh seems to have dropped out of the project.
This all from IMDB so take as you will.
Toothy and Gray Goose - any chance of Gray Goose turning up at the Rendition premiere in NY?
Favorite place on Earth: The cliffs of Gay Head near Martha's Vineyard.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Washington Post article, Wicked. *sigh* I haven't been to the Vineyard all summer. Just when you thought you couldn't adore them any more than you already do, you get news like yesterday's. I smiled at his iPod choices too.
Ellen danced to Feel Good, Inc. by the Gorillaz today, and who could blame her. I've been all angsted out by Neko Case's songs, all torchy and unrequited. After Ted's news, we don't need that anymore! Any suggestions for a song about Ted's latest? ;)
BLTB- remember the Toonces song? I loved that! Rufus on the iPod.
ReplyDeleteNETB- Any suggestions for a song about Ted's latest? ;)
Give us one!
^^Hmmm . . . let me think about it - I'll try to think of one! ;)
ReplyDeleteHow about, 'Word is Out' by Kylie Minogue?
ReplyDeleteJust love Ted. What a week!
http://www.ok-magazine.com/news/view/2073
ReplyDeleteHeath to do BBM sequel?
BLTB- remember the Toonces song? I loved that! Rufus on the iPod.
ReplyDeleteI just vaguely remember the song, mostly the end - Toonces The Driving Cat!" and the brilliant Phil Hartman saying, "Toonces! The Cat Who Could Drive A Car". lol. It just makes such sense that Jake would've loved that sort of absurd sketch; he probably saw those when they were actually on TV. If he ever hosts SNL again, they should resurrect the sketch for him; his reations would be hilarious.
His having Rufus on his ipod didn't surprise me as much as it makes me deliriously happy, it was seeing Arcade Fire there. I love that he's still listening to them! That band reminded me of Jake so much even before I knew he was a fan.
He was great on Ellen, I love their little lovefest they have. To say I was looking forward to seeing Jake cook is an understatement, I could've used a stiff drink just watching him slice and dice. I know he was being timed, but it's a shame talk shows always rush cooking segments. Jake really needs to do an entire hour-long show. Tomorrow, lol.
Ted ain't letting up! Check this out from tonight-
ReplyDeleteShanna Moakler and Travis Barker worked the pink carpet, hand in hand (rather Jake Gyllenhaal and Austin Nichols-esque, too divine!) and told us they’ve both dumped someone—presumably each other—via text messaging.
Heph here.
ReplyDeleteI'm in RL Hell, but I'm lurking. Love Ted's latest of course, and I too have to wonder what's coming.
This part...
Deliciously so! But wait. We simply have to get ahold of ourselves here. See, before you nasty naughties out there start cackling, like, totally inappropriate things here, can’t two guys show affection for each other (just like women do) without people going to all sorts of kooky conclusions? Not to mention their publicists' speed dials…
I mean, John Travolta does it all the time! What’s the biggie?
...it has to be Ted's answer to all the nay sayers who go on and on about how...can't guys go out to a bball game?...my brother/son/nephew hangs out with his guy friends--doesn't make him gay either...Jake's affectionate with EVERYONE...and my all time favorite: he wasn't wearing his contacts!
*snicker*
Keep it coming Ted!
Nope Wicked he isn't. - Ted is making sure everyone is getting the message. Loud and clear.
ReplyDeleteThe links are up for Jake on Ellen up now on the OMG Get together post.
Can I say how much I smiled when Ellen asked him if he cooks with someone with him. I wonder who that could be? ; )
Guess Ted wanted to make sure that we all understood what he meant by digital dance. :)
ReplyDeleteThe whole description of J&A bumping against each other and holding hands is just too sweet. I'm dying for a photo of them - any photo.
.Jake's affectionate with EVERYONE...and my all time favorite: he wasn't wearing his contacts!"
ReplyDeleteStraight guys do not hold hands with their equally gorgeous male friends .I'm sorry they don't.
Hi 8:43
ReplyDeleteIs there a name to go with you very true post?
To say I was looking forward to seeing Jake cook is an understatement, I could've used a stiff drink just watching him slice and dice. I know he was being timed, but it's a shame talk shows always rush cooking segments. Jake really needs to do an entire hour-long show.
ReplyDeleteI so agree, BLTB! I realize this segment was all in fun, but he sure did seem comfortable handling a saute pan! I'd love to see him as a guest on a cooking show, seriously cooking something! ;)
Tonight's comment from Ted - I really do think J&A want this now.
Who was the TB who suggested "Roam" by the B-52s as a J&A song, as in Rome If You Want To? I thought that was a great idea. ;)
My requests would be "Wrapped Around Your Finger" by The Police or "Possibly Maybe" by Bjork. :)
ReplyDeleteI sauteed some mushrooms tonight and thought of Jake, hehe. I'm still blissed out.
BLTB, I like that idea, Wrapped Around Your Finger, in honor of the digital dance. Magical song.
ReplyDeleteHi 11:00 - is there a name for you would should be just dub you Magical music?
ReplyDelete:) You, you know, you know my name already . . . I just hit anon by mistake!
ReplyDeleteI do?
ReplyDeleteFrom WFT
ReplyDeleteLord Alfred Douglas coined the phrase in his poem Two Loves, which was printed in the Chameleon in 1896:
"I am the Love that dare not speak its name."
Of course Douglas and Wilde had good reason to be cautious about how they described their relationship - homosexuality was a criminal offense in England in the 19th century.
http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/364900.html
"I mean, John Travolta does it all the time! What’s the biggie?
ReplyDeleteDenim Addendum: “Both had on blue jeans wrapped around perfect butts,” added our boyish spy, above, for the really important deets. Jake’s dude-pal/whatever “probably had the better butt,” sassed our unsubtle source. “It was slightly rounder, and his jeans fit a bit more snuggly.”
Sorry, Jakey, I know how it feels. I’m still smarting from the time Defamer blabbed I have no behind. So not true! I took a pic and showed the hateful folks how wrong they were, will you please now do the same for us? We’re waiting...high-quality pics preferred!
OMG. I think Ted has pictures!
Read this section above which all sounds like filler. How about it means:
I mean, John Travolta does it all the time! What’s the biggie? What does John Travolta do all the time? Apart from liking men according to the rumors of course! Why, he gets his picture taken embracing a man.
I took a pic and showed the hateful folks how wrong they were, will you please now do the same for us? We’re waiting...high-quality pics preferred! Never mind Defamer Ted's talking about Jake showing the "hateful folks how wrong thay are". I think Ted's strongly hinting he has pictures (low-quality ones, phone pictures perhaps) of Jake and Austin but he thinks Jake should do something "will you please now do the same for us? We're waiting..." for Toothy!?
To me that's only the explanation for me of why Ted names Jake and Austin. It's not a BI. I don't think he would have dared otherwise.
From WFT
ReplyDeleteLove and the single girl
Recently Reese has been seen out with Gyllenhaal, although she denies there is any romance between them.
“I have known Jake for years through different friends and he is just wonderful,” says Reese. “He’s very kind, generous and funny. It’s been nice these past days to laugh a little bit. Yeah, he’s great and I look forward to maybe making another film with him.”
http://www.mirror.co.uk/showbiz/entertainment/movies/2007/10/19/love-and-the-single-girl-89520-19972900/
So, Jake just basically told Ellen he loves a guy...
ReplyDeleteI have to say that the last few days have been great and the sighting from Ted made me really happy.
And I was convinced for a long time that Jake and Austin do in fact love each other - no one would deal with all the bullshit they had to deal with just for being a couple if they didn't genuinely love each other.
But to have Jake go on national TV and actually confirm that they love each other definitely rates as number one on the list of great things that happened this week!
Another UK TB- I wonder if Ted has pix too. He really must have something to name names. And to bring it up again gratuitiously in today's column. Just in case we forgot! :) Ted definitely has something or thinks he has something.
ReplyDeleteThe Ellen info is too amazing. (I haven't seen the show yet). This is absolutely what he's doing.
ReplyDeleteIn my Lakers 1 days at DC, I used to paraphrase the same poem as "the love that dare not squee its name".
I'm gobsmacked, in a good way.
I am sorry... i haven't watched the Ellen show yet (company banned youtube or any video streaming in the office)... did jake say "love that dare not speak its name" on the Ellen show? that's practically a coming out... i mean, that Oscar Wilde phrase is well-known what kind of love it's referring to.
ReplyDeletebtw, I saw two cute guys doing a bit "digital dance" on the street yesterday when I just came out from watching Eastern Promises (btw, great film, ultra violent though, but there's a 5 mins fighting scene with a completely nude Viggo Mortensen)
I am so loving this term. :)
Scylla, i am on DC too, though I don't really post on Lashers thread.
I cannot watch it again right now, but this was posted on WFT:
ReplyDeleteHey, I just watched today's clip on Ellen. Did anyone notice Jake's repeated references to "love that dare not speaketh" and so forth?
What exactly did Jake say on Ellen? Could he have been meaning a more private love rather than meaning man-love? Or both?
ReplyDeleteI think it's fantastic Jaustin are still together and loved-up. But I don't think even this will force a coming-out, and I must say I feel slightly uncomfortable with Ted implying a subtle form of blackmail. Anyways I think Jake's PR will ignore.
ReplyDeleteTed is not the kind to blackmail. There is no way that Ted would out anyone who didn't want to be out. It is against the code, and no I don't mean the Hollywood one, I mean as a fellow gay man. There is a certain level of an agreement that is you are in the closet that others in the gay community would not out you. I had a friend who was still in but went to clubs and met someone from work who was out. The guy he worked with never said anything until my friend was ready to come out for himself.
ReplyDeleteI do think that Jake asked for help coming out, or as Ted said Toothy wants someone else to do the dirty work. I think this is what is happening.
So why is Jake continuing to make remarks that sound to Jeese fan(atics) like he's saying he's with Reese? Why not just say he and Reese are simply friends?(Not "just friends", as that is considered code for doin' it.)
ReplyDeleteJeese fan/s are quoting a UK tv interview today over at WFT.
Or do you think what he is saying in interviews has changed subtly since the UK ones last week?
Maybe because Jake is dating someone else, but don't want to discuss it and don't want to lie about it? :)
ReplyDelete"On the behalf of the ladies, I'm single. On the behalf of the band, I'm not."
ReplyDeleteJeese fan/s are quoting a UK tv interview today over at WFT.
ReplyDeleteThat GMTV video is available on WDW:
http://wetdarkandwild.blogspot.com/2007/10/jake-on-gmtv-video-on-ellen-in-little.html
(I didn't have a chance to watch it yet.)
Jeese fan is quoting something from the GMTV show as a clear indicator that he is hiding Reese. With the implication that he was asked specifically about Reese.
ReplyDeleteI suppose I should know better than to let Jeese Fan interpret something for me I haven't seen myself!
What exactly did Jake say on Ellen?
ReplyDeleteFrom WFT
Well, it was nowhere near the Lord Alfred Dougles line - but he said (& this is not verbatim) - My love does not speakest - he said soome kind of version of that a few times, it all came about when he told Ellen he loved her, and she said, well you didn't give me one mention in Interview magazine, and that's what he said in response. Take from that what you will, but that rang a bell in my head. I don't know if he meant to say that or not, but the line is quite famous, as we know. :)
Jake is savvy enough to know exactly what he wants to say and how he wants to say it. He has mastered giving answers that are hints of confirmation to some, while maintaining the public image of a what HW wants.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the why we are picking this all apart when we should be celebrating the mere fact that Austin is with him in NY.
Oh it is great SK :-)
ReplyDeleteI always suspected they saw each other in NY anyway in order to avoid the LA paps. Still, would love to see one little picture of them in NY. Or just Austin.
Anyway, after Gray Goose last week I thought things couldn't point any more to Jake and Austin. And then this. Mega cool.
Makes me think we had it right about the blue ring being from Jake, and the replacement with the more discreet ring on a chain. Austin probably didn't expect anyone to see the new ring.
If, despite the situation Jake is in, they're obviously still in love then I've got great hope for them for their future. After Ted's BI last year saying Jake had "begged" the bf to come back then I think Jake is going to somehow try to have his career AND his personal life. Maybe he thinks that's best not achieved in the full glare that publicity would give them?
Good morning all,
ReplyDeleteHappy Renditon Film Opening Day! Great Middle Eastern-esque music to celebrate as well. I for one am thrilled about the latest news, that they are together, it's wonderful.
The love that not speaketh its name is not about a perfectly acceptable heterosexual relationship between America's sweetheart and America's golden boy.
ReplyDeleteThat's the love that people shout from the rafters because it's all cuddly and sweet and cute puppy dogs and non brattish kids and all that vomit inducing stuff that the tabs have been spitting out for the best part of this year.
The Jeesers no longer have the divorce to hide behind so now they are standing behind Jeese being oh so private because their 'relationship' is oh so special.
If Jake wanted that level of privacy then all he had to do was not talk about love at all in any of these interviews.
The boy can't stop speaking about it though and it ain't Reese that put the smile on his dial after Letterman cause she was over the other side of the country.
I agree special, we should continue to celebrate this wonderful news! This is a great day let's enjoy it.
ReplyDeletewill jeese fans at least listen to reese, if they don't "trust" jake. the woman basically said, "nothing's going on, we've known each other a long time".
ReplyDeleteGot a call from Wicked at the airport on here way here to Boston. Asked if I would post on her behalf.
ReplyDelete"Put down the c-pipe and stop talking about the Jeese."
Cause you know it is all about the boys now. The Jeese is no more.
^^You have to love Wicked. :)
ReplyDeleteHope you all have a great time tomorrow getting together and seeing "Rendition". I wish I was joining you. I'd love to squeeze it in this weekend but I don't think it's going to happen. I can't wait to see it.
LOL
ReplyDeleteWicked, see ya soon! :*
I love your crossness, ag :)*
ReplyDeleteHi winterbird - I do of course know you from DC.* I'm having a bit of a break at the mo. Waiting for Jakalie to begin. Happy for our boys.
Again, wishing all the New Englanders a great Rendition meet-up. I'm glad the US and UK at least are in synch this time.
Have fun in Boston this weekend, guys! I'll be with you in spirit. I was hoping to see Rendition tonight but I'm going to have to put it off as a matinee one day during the week; too much work to do. :( I'll have to try and avoid all the spoilery!
ReplyDeleteAnd wicked is right. Quit smoking, it's all about Jake and Austin. It's a new day. :D
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteknow we've been ordered to put down the pipe, but I can't help noting that we are finally getting the denial at the same time as Ted's story.
ReplyDeleteI really think all of this has less to do with Rendition that Jake's now having two great film projects lined up. I still think Jeese may have been done to help him get roles. And now he's signed on for a potential blockbuster franchise and a relationship movie, the two kinds of movies least likely, I think, to be given to an openly gay actor. But now that he's signed up I think it would be hard for them to fire him. And if he comes out or is more open about his relationship, and these movies still do well, then maybe we really will see HW start to change. Now I really do have to put that darn pipe down.
Thanks to everyone for wishing us a good weekend in Boston.
Yeah, have fun watching Rendition, I just came back from the movie theater and was so NOT disappointed. Loved it. Not saying anything not to spoin anything, but only heard really good comments from audience members on the way out.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the exact same thing, Destiny. With these two films lined up, Jake may feel freer to live his life more openly. Let's hope that the walk through the Village with Austin was just the beginning.
ReplyDeleteAnd don't forget FNL tonight. A has to show up in one of these episodes. Besides, the show is worth watching on its own merits.
“At one point they had their heads briefly touching each other,”
ReplyDeleteCould this be Ted's way of subtly saying they briefly kissed?
Yes all the people gathering in Boston have a fantastic time. If we could get a little photo of you as a group too that would be nice.
ReplyDeleteI hope Austin turns up in FNL tonight even if I can't see it.
I also wonder if he will be filming The Informers in Uruguay
Scyllanouska what's your next identity going to be?
Jake Gyllenhaal Acts Goofy When His Best Friend's Around
ReplyDeleteTrying to decipher what the hell gossip columnist Ted Casablanca is saying often requires a decoder ring, but from what I can tell, in a recent post of his on E! Online, a little birdie told Ted of an eyewitness encounter between (presumably) Jake Gyllenhaal and BFF Austin Nichols that hinted that the two are actually much more chummy than just bros. The source spotted the two walking alongside one another in NYC, and had this to relay to Ted:
"All the while, they kept walking close to each other, like they were purposely trying to bump into each other, ya know what I mean?"
"At one point they had their heads briefly touching each other," D.S. practically breathlessly relayed. "A short time after that came the friend's arm around Jake and the whisper to the ear. Then, the whole block before they got to West 12th Street," said the onlooker, J.G. & A.N. did a little digital dance. "Oh so cute!"
I do like that the source included in his/her findings that of the two, Jake's buddy had the better booty, for those of you who keep track of those sort of things. And, once again, I feel like I'm missing some crucial information, since I'm not sure what a "little digital dance" entails. Dammit, does that mean they were doing the robot? Or were they texting each other along the way? Real gossip is hard.

Just got back from seeing "Rendition" Our Jake was stunning. I really liked this movie.
ReplyDeleteJoker, I agree Jake was stunning. And I was totally mesmerized by Yigal Naor, his character is so believable, he so reminds me of people I know from that part of the world. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, Jake can be totally hot in a make out scene with a woman, if anyone needed any further confirmation. I'll seal my lips now.

I saw the 3:30 showing of Rendition and just got back after much talking over a very good meal. I won’t babble too much about it since the Boston gang is still not up to speed ;) I’ll just say that I thoroughly enjoyed it even though it was not the movie I was expecting. Gavin Hood is no Costa-Grava but somehow his take on such a story might be the most efficient way to get the audience’s attention and also to get tongues wagging about the topic at hand. Obviously he favors the personal story/human angle, an approach he truly masters IMO. I watched Tsotsi for the third time yesterday and I think that if you’ve seen this movie Hood’s treatment in this new film shouldn’t come as a surprise (yet it did in my case, probably because renditions are such a highly political/social/moral issue).
Oh yeah, I almost forgot about Jake… Three words: terrific job Jakey!
The people who were with me already knew that Jake was a very good actor and they were pretty confident that Rendition would not be a disappointment but most of them did not expect him to “look/feel so mature”. I have to agree. Jake still has this totally juvenile/ingénue look in Rendition but somehow the “kid” vibes are gone. And, to steal Joker words above, as this newly grown man “Jake was stunning”.
See you tomorrow for more talk about this great movie. :)
I might have to stay off this thread for the next few days (or if special or wicked start a Rendition discussion thread), I won't be seeing the movie until Wednesday at the earliest. I have a small idea of how it might unfold, but I don't want to know completely. :)
ReplyDeleteHe adds that he knows how annoying it can be when actors start lecturing people about politics. 'I don't think audiences need to know my political beliefs to appreciate this film. Nor do they need to know who I am dating. It's not important.'
ReplyDeleteI haven't asked who he is dating, but since he raised the subject, he did make some intriguingly ambiguous comments about his sexual orientation at the time Brokeback Mountain came out. A broad grin spreads across his face and he covers his head with his hands. 'I know, I know.' He is single at the moment. For several years he had an on-off affair with Kirsten Dunst. And yet?…
I quote something he said about homosexuality: 'I don't think I'd be afraid of it if it happened.' What on earth did he mean by that? 'Nothing like that has ever happened to me. I live in a different world. What I was trying to say was why leave out possibilities in my life? It wasn't meant to be provocative.'
So let's get it on the record: is he saying he is open to persuasion? 'No, I am not open to persuasion myself, but the idea of homosexuality is acceptable to me. I grew up in a city where half the people I know are gay. Both of my godfathers are gay.'
...OK, having established that he is not bisexual, was he being quite calculating when he allowed people to think he was? 'It was meant as a way of saying it was important for Heath [Ledger, his co-star in Brokeback Mountain] and I to have the movie exist as the movie, but also to have people know it was two straight actors playing those parts.'
I think I follow. The chemistry and tension wouldn't have worked as well if two gay actors had been playing those roles, and because they were both straight it made their sexual awkwardness more convincing, more like it might be for two cowboys. 'Exactly. Here are these two lonely people who find themselves through love. Love has no bounds and these two people found a connection in this massive, lonely landscape of Wyoming.'
Presumably he got nasty letters from homophobes.
'Determining what was nasty and what was nice was always going to be hard for me with that movie. But yes, I got an insight into homophobia that I wouldn't normally have encountered.'

Jake is lying.
ReplyDeleteThe interview was probably done when Jake was in London last week to do promo for Rendition (he was there for a day or so). This was before this week's handholding fest with Austin. I guess he doesn't consider that to be gay/bisexual--it's just two straight guys who feel this great affection for one another.
ReplyDeleteSo some of you have the gall to call Jake a liar because your darling Ted comes up with some bullshit just so he can keep some readers for his column. Does he have any proof, you are the ones that say there are no pictures of Jake and Reese. If this person followed them for a long time where are the pictures (everyone has camera phones now don't they). Oh it prob wasn't working how convenient.
ReplyDeleteLooks to me like the interviewer asked Jake to explicity clarify whether he is bisexual or straight and he chose to say he is straight. I don't see what else he could have done, even if it is not true. Doubts that was the right time and place for him the come out.
ReplyDeleteMaybe after seing Rendition and hearing of him holding hands with Austin I cannot go down to tought on him, but that is the way I feel.
Well he will look stupid if he ever comes out (which he won't because he is not gay as he has said on several occasions) and also I don't think Austin is either, But just keep dreaming if it makes your days better.
ReplyDeleteNo, I am not open to persuasion myself...
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly does this mean?
No longer open to being persuaded to be straight, perhaps?
I think he meant it in this definition of persuasion:
ReplyDeleteA creed or belief; a sect or party adhering to a certain creed or system of opinions; as, of the same persuasion
What makes totally cringe in that article is this:
ReplyDeleteI think I follow. So apparently for Jake two gay actors wouldn't have done as good a job as two straight ones. I hope I've missed something or that he's been misquoted.
Ok, so the roller coaster ride continues (sigh). Still I can't wait to hear what our Boston posse thought about Rendition. :)
ReplyDeleteExactly frenchy. This part was what made me most upset. I really hope it`s been misquoted.
ReplyDelete:19PM: No, it means he can't be presuaded to be gay/BI, read the whole article.
ReplyDeleteBottom line: He is saying he is straight, some of his best friends are gay, his Godfathers are gay, he is gay friendly, etc.
Mmmm... to be honest, i wouldn't totally trust the Telegraph, they are not a tabloid, but they are pretty right-wing... i am not sure when Jake said "exactly", he was agreeing to that interviewer's view about two gay actors playing wouldn't work.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what I expect from jake, but judging by all the pre-coming out behaviours of all the closeted actors and musicians (how many of them have proclaimed "I am straight"?), this interview hardly clears the rumours :P
another thing is, as pointed out, the interview is done when he was in London... many things could have happened in those few days. the thing is, even if we believe the Jaustin, we don't really know the dynamic of the relationship... who's holding back, who wants to come out (or both), how stable is the relationship?
one good insight from that interview though: the fact that Jake getting those homophobic hate letters... *sighs* - if Jake had been living in a liberal gay friendly environment, all hatred would be like a wake up call or warning... makes you think twice about coming out, doesn't it?
Either way, I still maintain the belief that if he's gay or bi, he should come out in his own time.
Anon 5:20, 5:42, 6:11, and 7:05- we would appreciate your opinion much more if it had a name attached to it.
ReplyDeleteSaw Rendition with the other OMGers and then went for Mexican. We had a ball!
Re Jake's comments, I think his actions speak louder than his words. Curious to see what he will do next.

ReplyDeleteI truly hope he was misquoted winterbird. :)
He and Austin are going through a career building/consolidation phase right now. I just hope they've found a modus operandi that will allow them to survive as a couple until their coming-out, if any.
Re Jake's comments, I think his actions speak louder than his words. Curious to see what he will do next.
ReplyDeleteYou're right wicked. Thanks for the reminder.
Now "we had a ball" is not good enough. Tell us more, both about the gang and the movie. :D
The Johnathan Ross interview was ambiguous.
ReplyDeleteWe have no way of knowing that the Ted column is true or false.
This latest interview isn't ambiguous. Jake is saying far more clearly than ever that he cannot be persuaded.
I don't think it matters what the truth is. It's what Jake wants the party line to be.
If he stood up tomorrow and announced his love for Reese Witherspoon or any other female, we either believe him or not.
It's not going to change anything he does.
It's not going to change our lives either.
Unless something changes, I am happy to concentrate on Jake and Austin's careers.
If Jake goes out with someone I can stomach (ie not Reese)then I might enjoy the relationship as a spectator.
Same with Austin.
Good luck boys whatever happens and thank you Jake for some fantastic roles and for introducing me to the wonder that is Austin.
i watched Rendition tonight. I think it's one finely made movie. I wouldn't say it blew me away and it's probably not as good as Zodiac (lol).... But it scores pretty high in most departments: performance, direction, cinematography all solid. Jake looks stunning and very handsome. I think he's trying his hands on subtlety (or minimalism) and it works really well... the script could have been better though, because before "the little twist" (don't want to do spoiler), the script is pretty standard.
ReplyDeleteExtra gold star to Peter, his performance is top-notch. Needlesss to day Meryl rules too.
I would also remind people that there is a BIG difference between seeing Jake making comments on TV and reading an interview with him. He has never disappointed me live and come across as articulated and deep, while in print he has made some questionable statements (pigs?) and I am starting to wonder if they misquote him or plainly make up some of the stuff, at times.
ReplyDeleteNow, as Frency said, I want comments about Rendition!
well said, ag.
ReplyDeleteeven though i think jake and austin would make the hottest couple in the world, the only incentive for me to see jake's films is the quality of the film (and his performance) alone.
i am a bit amused by "fans" who say they wouldn't spend money on rendition because Jake lies... i wonder who bought all those "Mission Impossible" tickets then? :P
Actually, I did not like Meryl one bit. She was practically wearing her Devil wears Prada stuff again and I am sincerely bored with such stereotypical character.
ReplyDeleteWinterbird, for me Peter and Reese gave good and honest performances but didn't have much to do and their roles did not require much range. I you're about to throw things at me please use tomatoes... I love tomatoes. ;)
ReplyDeleteI would give a gold star to Jake and my extra gold stars would go to Omar Metwally and Yigar Naor.
I LOVED Meryl but her character was a bit cartoonish.
Are spoilers allowed at this point? I wouldn't want to ruin it for those who haven't seen the movie yet and plan to do so.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you Zero.
ReplyDeleteI should also clarify that when I'm talking about Ted's column, I don't mean that Jake and Austin weren't actually walking down the street together, I mean that there is no way of proving what they were actually doing whilst walking down the street.
With regards to Rendition, opening numbers are always supposed to be the big thing but I don't really think of it as a 'weekend movie'. Most people want to enjoy their weekends and relax. A heavy political movie isn't usually on the agenda.
Rendition was also never going to be a big box office success because of the subject matter so for people to call it a failure is a little rough.
RE Austin. I know he was in LA fairly recently (lunch with Ashley Olsen) but rehearsals for his movie were happening at that point and he probably had to do some pre production work. Other than that, he seems to be in Austin (to shoot FNL) or NY. He doesn't seem to have any previous connection to NY and yet he talked about walking around 'his' city in that interview during your summer. LA is definitely not a place you can walk around in and presumably neither is Austin, TX.
Does anyone think that Austin has possibly moved to NY?
Actually, I did not like Meryl one bit. She was practically wearing her Devil wears Prada stuff again and I am sincerely bored with such stereotypical character."
ReplyDeleteShe was playing Miranda Priestly goes to the State Department. Pure Cruella DeVille. I do agree with the NY Times critic: The North Africa sequences were far superior to the American ones. I thought Jake was fine--I liked this performance so much better than what he tried to do (or didn't do) in "Zodiac." (I loved when he was smoking some hash in that bellydancing joint right before Meryl called him).
I was not crazy about that Romeo and Juliet subplot and the twist at the end (which was the timing of that subplot) didn't make much sense.
This is the same structure as Babel, Traffic, Crash--I do think it was FAR better than Crash but largely inferior (mostly because of screenplay--not acting) to Traffic (which I thought was brilliant).
Overall, not a great film by far--the screenplay was trite and way too pat--but it's well-intentioned and I do admire that a subject as weighty as this (and one ALL Americans should know about) was made into a film.
It certainly didn't deserve the pans it got--and not only was Jake very effective in his role but seriously gorgeous.
Hi guys!
ReplyDeleteJust want to say that we had a complete blast today, it was so great to meet some of our TBs, and hope to meet many more. We'll have to do the TB get-togethers on a regular basis! Thanks for a great day, TBs! :*
I loved Rendition I only wish there had been more of it! I have to get my thoughts together about it, but I found it to be a very beautiful and heartbreaking film, all sides firm in their convictions that they are right, and nothing but misery as a result. The acting is excellent by all, IMO. Besides the main story line, the substories were thought-provoking too; an innocent young couple caught up in war and politics, questioning their roles in a traditional society; beautiful countries and cultures crushed by unrest. I agree that Jake is stunning in it, both acting and physcial presence.
OT - Red Sox Update:
Top of the 5th
Red Sox 10, Cleveland 1!
which included a Grand Slam by J.D. Drew in the bottom of the first!
Personally, I loved the plot twist at the end. I liked the fact that I never quite disliked bad guy Abasi because I was constantly reminded of his human, more gentle side. I think that worked well with the intent of showing things from different possibly valid points of view. I think Jake is really stunning and quite different than before. If he keeps growing like this he will inevitably get the golden staue, it is just a matter of time.
ReplyDeleteI'm not too worried about the interview. It seems to paint a different kind of picture of the Jake we know and I think it's because he has not been quoted accurately. Also some parts of the interview seemed to be cut and pasted from previous interviews.
ReplyDeleteWhatever the case I have since the TMZ sighting decided to believe in only one story (J&A) and not get fazed by the twist of the day. Which is what this is.
LA is definitely not a place you can walk around in and presumably neither is Austin, TX.
ReplyDeleteFWIW, Austin is a GREAT walking city. If you live by the university and downtown, you can get by without a car for most things you would want to do.
