Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, will be celebrated from sundown tonight through sundown December 12. Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem by Judas Maccabee in 165 BC after the Temple had been profaned by Antiochus IV Epiphanes, king of Syria and overlord of Palestine. There was only enough oil to light the temple lights for one night and miraculously the oil lasted for the time it took to make new consecrated oil for the temple. Today that miracle is celebrated by the lighting of the menorah for 8 consecutive nights, time with family and friends, and the giving of gifts.
Jake has mentioned that his family celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas. Being such a good boy he must have gotten a visit from not only Santa but Hanukkah Harry as well. Who is Hanukkah Harry?
It's Christmas Eve and Santa Claus -- despite being nursed by Mrs. Claus -- is severely ill. Santa calls Hanukkah Harry at his workshop on Mount Sinai, asking if he could fill in to deliver toys to children around the globe in lieu of Santa. Hannukah Harry agrees and flies through the air on a cart pulled by three donkeys, Moische, Herschel and Schlomo. Hanukkah Harry lands on a roof and climbs down the chimney of the home of Scott and Christine, proffering gifts of socks and slacks respectively. While the children are initially disappointed at their gifts, their realization that Hanukkah Harry had helped Santa, makes them recognize that "Christians and Jews, deep down, are pretty much the same. Maybe that's the true meaning of Christmas!" With that statement Santa's flu is cured, and Santa comes down the chimney bearing gifts of Barbie make-me-pretty for Christine and a pellet gun for Scott. And Hanukkah Harry has saved Christmas.
Maybe it was Hanukkah Harry who was the one who gave Jakey those cashmere socks last year? Maybe he will leave Jake a note saying he will get the John from Cincinnati dvd in March but here's some slacks for now.
"On Moische! On Herschel! On Schlomo!
It's Hanukkah Harry 8 nights a year!
On Moische! On Herschel! On Schlomo!
Means that Hanukkah Harry is here!
Delivering Toys to Jewish girls and Jewish boys
We dance the horah around the menorah
'Cuz Hanukkah Harry is Here!"

Or does he get John from Cincinnati already? ; )
ReplyDeleteHappy Hannukah all!
ReplyDeleteJust back from an extended Thanksgiving break, and catching up with the comments. A lot of troll activity recently - I guess some people are homeless now JakeWatch has folded.
I don't know what it was about the last post about 'Jake and Friends?' that had the trolls foaming at the mouth. I think Jake and Austin are deliberately avoiding being papped together - they've done it before. That's for one of two reasons:
1) they don't want to add fuel to the false rumors about them
2) the rumors are true and they're waiting for them to die down.
Pick your reason according to your personal bias. I'm a 2) personally.
Interesting comments from Ted about Gray Goose in all this. I don't think the Jake and Reese friendship is sexless, but I don't think the Jake and Austin friendship is sexless either. I can imagine Jake telling Reese (and most people) the rumors are all bs, but I can also imagine Jake and Austin meeting up occasionally as "friends". Some people you just can't let go of, even if you really should. JMO.
For the first time ever I kinda think Austin should just finish it, and move on. Maybe he's (Austin) rationalised this whole thing as a temporary set-back. Austin doesn't want to be out anymore than Jake IMO so this situation suits him right now. *shrugs* People put up with all sorts in the name of love. Interesting to see what will happen next.
Just my $.02.
Oh I love this, it's my favorite by Adam.
ReplyDeleteHappy Hanukkah, all! :*
Happy Hanukkah!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info about the JFC dvd. Since March 25 is my birthday it will be the perfect gift for one of my loved ones to buy for me.
My sister likes to get a wish list from me and she still hasn't figured out why I'm interested in some of the dvds I've included. I didn't realize that The Utopian Society dvd wouldn't be available until January of 2008 so I had included it on my Christmas wish list. She called me up the other day to tell me that I had sent her on a wild goose chase looking for it. She didn't realize how right she was about that. :)
I had completely forgotten the lovely story of Hanukkah Harry. Thanks, Spesh, for the reminder.

ReplyDeleteCute! ;)
NETB- since you have said you have become a fan of alt/noir country (and that is sort of my fault, because I keep putting on the alt country stuff!), I have to tell you about a podcast I recently downloaded. KEXP has free podcasts available for download, usually a new one every two weeks or so. Podcast #73 is alt/noir country. I think you would really like it. And it's free! Just go to kexp.org to check it out.
ReplyDeleteYAY! Thanks, Wicked, I will definitely check that out. And don't worry, I love your taste in music - I was absolutely blown away by yesterday's choice too, so keep it coming! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my, Hanukkah already, how time flies! Happy Hanukkah to all those who celebrate it! And I'll add that my heart goes out to you if you actually have to get sufficient gifts to last EIGHT DAYS! I've only to last one and I'm already exhausted!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know the Hanukkah Harry story. It's so sweet and I'm sure lots of people around me don't know about it either. Will share it during the holidays. And it comes with the fabulous news about the JFC DVD. Makes me forget about the 1.5 foot of snow we got yesterday. :)
Hello Max, nice to see you back!
She called me up the other day to tell me that I had sent her on a wild goose chase looking for it. She didn't realize how right she was about that. :)
Too funny BV! And I sympathize with your situation. I hoped to include the Zodiac collector's edition on my own list but it's January 2008 for that one too. But our patience will be well rewarded I'm sure. :)
Makes me forget about the 1.5 foot of snow we got yesterday. :)
ReplyDeleteFrenchy, DC is bracing an inch or two of tomorrow and everyone is freaking out! People here cannot handle it. I love snow and am hoping for a big one. :)
^^I love snow too! We got a little yesterday, but not as much as predicted. It wouldn't be New England or Christmastime without it! I couldn't handle good weather all the time. Into each life, a little snow must fall! ;) Spesh, I meant to thank you for the Hanukkah Harry story as well - very sweet! :)
ReplyDeleteHey don't thank me -- thank NBC.
ReplyDeleteYup Hanukkah Harry was born on Saturday Night Live. Jon Lovitz's Harry to Phil Hartman's Santa.
But do you remember that Hanukkah Harry saved Easter too?
Frenchy, DC is bracing an inch or two of tomorrow and everyone is freaking out!
ReplyDeletePfft! Sissies. ;)
I love snow and am hoping for a big one. :)
I couldn't handle good weather all the time.
You silly girls! Don't you know the ancient curse? "May all your desires be granted at once"?
Into each life, a little snow must fall!
It does honey, except for one of my cousins who's already bald at 35. :D
Frenchy, DC is bracing an inch or two of tomorrow and everyone is freaking out!
ReplyDeletePfft! Sissies. ;)
Hee! Very funny, Frenchy.
If all my desires are going to be granted at once, I'm going to add a few good ones! ;)
Spesh, I didn't know about Hanukkah Harry - how could I have missed that on SNL? I have certain faves like Adam Sandler, Stuart Smalley and of course, now Andy Samberg. :)
Happy Hanukkah to everyone celebrating this holiday. We celebrate both holidays in my house, so I may be in trouble because I haven't done any shopping yet. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy gf already gave me an early present, a lavender-filled pillow with a picture of the maker's cat on it; she chose that one because the cat's name is Jake. I later went back to the same crafts fair and at one booth selling jeweled glass candle holders had a few made out of Gray Goose vodka bottles (and no, I did not drop any hints). Also thought of Austin when I read a review this morning of a new boxed set of John Ford movies and wondered if he'd find that under his Christmas tree. Gee, you'd think I was a bit obsessed.
Thanks for the Hanukkah Harry story, I never saw that skit. And very funny frenchy and bv.
^^Destiny, I love going to craft shows too. I just went to a big holiday one in Boston. They always have something I can't resist too. This year it was small, handpainted ornaments for decorating the outside of gift packages. Come to think of it, I have a bottle of Grey Goose vodka in my freezer. Maybe I should make Cosmos soon. Well, enough of me, back to work! ;)
ReplyDeleteDestiny -- we both know that box set will be under the tree
ReplyDeleteSo Spesh, how did Hanukkah Harry save Easter anyway?
ReplyDelete"You silly girls"
ReplyDeleteAre male posters excluded on this site?
Gender bias?- Frenchy was referencing comments made by myself and NETB. She knows we are both female. No, male posters are definitely not excluded on this site.
ReplyDeleteAs all quiet on the Jake/Austin news front can I add a couple of song requests? More for the pleasure of sharing songs I love with people who may not have heard them yet than anything.
ReplyDeleteJust Friends by Amy Winehouse. She's got a powerhouse of a voice, though this is a more up-tempo song - in beat if not lyrics.
Ever Fallen in Love by The Buzzcocks. Immensely sad sentiments that you can slam-dance to - fab.
I've enjoyed reading about your maybe snowy Hanukkah in New England :) It's almost warm here :)
ReplyDeleteThanks as well for the JfC dvd news - hope they make a compatible one for us zone 2-ers.
I will e-mail you some song requests :)
ReplyDeleteSo what do you guys think Jake will be getting and giving for Hanukkah? And remember, his birthday's coming up as well.
ReplyDeleteNew/old pics with Maggie on IHJ. Right when we said there were no more pics of Jake with family. Hmm...we were expecting new photos actually...
ReplyDeleteHappy Hannukkah to everyone. I hope Jake gets to celebrate it with his sweet Grey Goose.
ReplyDeleteBy the way there are male posters on OMG :-)
Somehow I doubt that Jake will be receiving wind chimes and socks for Hanukkah or his birthday this year. Wouldn't fit in with his new image, now would it?
ReplyDeleteMaybe a football and a Jets jersey Wicked.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna give him something no one else can, some goose to gander
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna give him something no one else can, some goose to gander
ReplyDeleteGo and give him an eyeful Austi! :D
And since we've been told your logic has been failing you recently, let me remind you that only partridges can stand in pear trees with impunity. ;)
Whatever you can give him can't compare to what I can give him. 20 million big ones! Eat it!
ReplyDeleteI give him something better than money, honey. And I do. Oh yes I do.
ReplyDeleteI give him what he wants in high altitude!
ReplyDeleteOh honey who do you think got him into the club?
ReplyDeleteAusti, "do" him one better at a higher altitude - I'll give ya a special deal, and you won't need to sneak off to the john. ;)
ReplyDeletelol at the Hanukkah Harry post, I love it. :D I remember seeing those sketches when they were brand new because I'm just that old. I used to wait for them during SNL Holiday specials, too, hehe. Jon Lovitz was one of the best players SNL ever had, imo. He and Phil Hartman were always gangbusters together.
ReplyDeleteI'm completely cheered by Ted's torch-bearing for J & A. :)

ReplyDeleteLooks like Ryan is finally going public with Abbie Cornish: Here's them getting snuggly and kissy at a friend's house this past weekend: http://www.flynetonline.com/2007/12/ryan-gets-cozy-with-cornish/
And here's Abbie and Ryan's daughter Ava buying a X-mas wreath while Ryan and his son Deacon wait in the car. (Sweet photos): http://www.flynetonline.com/2007/12/mini-reese-and-abbie-go-shoppi/
Looks like that is a ring on Abbie's finger.
