Zodiac Director's Cut

Zodiac - The Director's Cut comes out today. Giving a new look at Fincher's
masterpiece. What makes Zodiac so good is Fincher's obsessiveness to detail and commitment to getting it right. It is great marriage between a obsessive director and an seductively obsessive story. It takes someone like Fincher to do justice to such a intense fact filled story weaving it into a something that is part police report part anxiety inducing thriller.

Fincher hits high marks on all points, he brings together a remarkable group of actors who give great performances in a setting that has completely captured the look and feel of San Francisco in the late 60's and early 70's.

Zodiac is one of the best movies of the year for good reason, great cast, great story, great director. It's one of those films that continues to find acclaim long after it leaves the theater. And Jake's carefully crafted performance as the introvert obsessed Graysmith will be recognized long after as another amazing performance of his career. It is easy to praise Robert Downey Jr. for his inspired take on Paul Avery for its broad boldness, but is harder to see the work that went into all subtle nuances portraying Graysmith in one viewing, returning to view Zodiac you begin to see the great performance Jake brings.

The Director's cut includes:
* Commentary by: Director David Fincher, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., James
Vanderbilt, Brad Fischer, and James Ellroy
* Zodiac Deciphered: An exhaustive behind-the-scenes documentary
* The Visual Effects of Zodiac
* Previsualization: Split-screen comparisons between animatics and finished film
* This is the Zodiac Speaking: All-new feature-length documentary covering every aspect of the investigation
* His Name was Arthur Leigh Allen: The truth about the prime suspect in the Zodiac case from people who knew him and the police who investigated him.

The commentary will be a must out of sheer curiosity of what really happened during filming and what it is really like to work with Fincher. Jake always bring something interesting to his commentaries for his film, and this one is definitely a don't miss.

  1. This Star article is really a poor attempt at revisionist history. It seems to be saying that Reese was on the set with Jake on his birthday, but there's no reason to believe this. Also, the insistence yet again on "there can be no doubt he's in love" or whatever. If this relationship was believable they wouldn't have to keep saying how real it is.

  2. Pfffft! That's all I have to say upon reading that Star article - it reads like the bad fiction it is. Come on, observed right down to the last blush and smile? Gimme a break! ;)

AG, I have no problem talkiing about who I'm thinking about voting for in our Presidential election, I've been looking at Mr. Obama all along, and I think that's who I'm going to vote for.

I'm so excited about getting the Zodiac Director's Cut, and Karma Chameleon is one of my favorite songs ever! Thanks for another great post, OMG. :)

  3. If I read this about a couple I KNOW to be real - like Brad and Angelina - it would still make me throw up in my mouth a little. Made-up tabloid bs.

When will they start writing this kind of nonsense about alternative couples: "David blushed and swooned as NPH told him he was the only one for him....". At least it would put a more interesting spin on the fakery. :-)

  4. And have to agree that the insistence on how much Jake is in love just doesn't fit with the Santa Monica pictures. (It's harder to read the park pictures with the kids, as I think they may have been rightly annoyed about the effect of the paps on the kids. Young kids should not be targets for the paps.)

  5. I think they're all prescheduled with Flynet so I wouldn't put it down to annoyance. Even the publicist and Tobey pics are *still* people on the safe list :)

  6. It was great to see Ted taking on one of our trolls head-to-head today. The troll used to predict that Ted would gradually drop all Toothy talk - it's new tactic is claiming now that Ted doesn't even write the column/letters anymore. Sheesh.

BTW I think "frying pan" just refers to the fact that it's not safe to go forward with any plans for a Baby Tile right now. Or ever IMO cos I don't see Jake coming out in my lifetime.

  7. As if I wasn't already dying to see Xodiac with all the commentary, I'm really excited now that I see they have James Ellroy commenting. I love his books, and as someone who has had his own obsessions he should be really interesting.

Max, not to be nosey, but you wouldn't be pushing 100 would you?

And to answer AG's question in the previous thread, of the candidates who have any chance, the only one who has a really good position on gay rights is technically a spouse, Edwards' wife, and I do like Edwards. But I also like Obama and the fact that he didn't go along with Iraq. I also think he is very inspiring and seems a little more like the real deal, something we haven't seen in a candidate in a long time. One thing is for sure, I don't like Clinton.

  9. No, but feels like it some mornings.

Jake wouldn't have gone thro all this with Reese for nothing - as he sees it. Maybe he'll do a George Takei, and come out in his 60's. I'll be around to see that hopefully.

    ReplyDelete
  10. ^^You guys are funny. He'd better hurry up, because I'd like to still be around to see it too! That's great about James Ellroy commentary for Zodiac, should make it even more fascinating. I'm not sure about Hillary yet, liking Obama a lot, need to learn more about Edwards. But we need a good Democrat!

  11. I'd be happy/(happier) with Clinton, Obama or Edwards. At heart I am a Kucinich girl.

Terrified at the thought of Prez "Put all AIDS-sufferers in concentration camps" Huckabee.

P.S. Belated birthday wishes to Tom.

  12. Yes, we do not heart Huckabee. ;)

  13. I don't know that I'll be around if he waits until his 60s Max. I am however begininng to fear it might not be until his 40s. Although if there is ever a Baby Tile I would think that would have to change the equation. Still puzzling over that frying pan.

  14. Score one for Reese's PR. They were able to get the NY Daily News to report that she didn't nix the sex scene Vince did. Also she's a great mom!

    http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2008/01/08/2008-01-08_reese_witherspoon_ensures_kids_peace.html

Aww. You can't get much better then Reese.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Only in Hollywood could nannying be considered "preferential" to direct parenting.

Sorry, I like Reese, but I am much more likely to say "Awww" over Austin. You can't get much better than Austin. ;)

  16. Was my sarcasm not apparent? Sorry. She makes me vomit.

  17. Back Away From My Woman!

You may have heard the latest reports that Vince Vaughn nixed a love scene between he and Reese Witherspoon for their new movie Four Christmases. Trust US Weakly to get the real scoop, and the walls have ears on that set. Our ears overheard Jake Gyllenhaal, on an emergency visit to San Franciso recently, read Vince the riot act. Seems he wasn't too happy with Vince's getting too friendly with his new amore. Reese blushed demurely and apologized for her Jake's behavior, but look secretly pleased as her man picked her up and carried her off to her trailer. Stay tuned for more deets!

    Tobey & Jake feuding

A sibling rivalry has erupted between co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire on the Brothers’s set! “They’re competing over who gets along better with cast mates and crew” an insider says. The actors are also showering them with gifts. While Tobey gave crew members the new 8 GB Ipod Nano, Jake gave out gifts certificates to Tony KOI restaurant! Adds the source, “It’s getting uncomfortable.”

  29. US Weakly, how did Jake carry Reese to her trailer? Did he throw her over his shoulder or carry her gently in his arms, giving her loving looks while stroking her expertly highlighted hair?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Did we leave that part out? The horror! He carried her gently in his arms, of course, grinning. Reese was overheard to whisper for him not to mess up her expertly styled and and hightlighted coif, or she'd beat the crap out of him.

We at US Weakly strive to keep our news as silly as and unbelievable as possible, you know!

  34. Looks like Mom mighta had *something* done. At the least a new hairstyle but I think its *more* than that. good for her, if she is happy. She looks good younger and thinner, was she always so thin? My bet's on Ma and Pa arent together, you know how the ladies start looking better after it happens. And if true, it sure wuld explain a lot of things, right?

  35. Finally, Jake with a family member! This is good to see. Naomi looks good!

    ReplyDelete
  36. (((((((Spesh))))))) Sorry to hear you had a bad day. Hope the January thaw cheered you up - I guess it was almost 70 degrees here - Bizaaahh! (Bizarre) lol

Naomi looks fab - I really like her, glad to see Jake out with family. :) You scared me there for a minute, PerezScanner! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Mom is looking good. I can't believe we finally got a picture of Jake with family. We're still waiting on other pictures that seem to have been forbidden for the past few months: dad, maggie, chris and austin. If Reeke is so real, why can't we see such pictures?

    ReplyDelete
  38. If Jake is now out and about with family, what about his friends? Of course, I'd love to see him with Austy. But hell, it would be nice to see him with Chris even. Or Peter.

    ReplyDelete
  39. That National Enquirer sounds like bullshit. Especially since we just saw photos of Jake and Tobey talking.

  40. Let's hope mum's come to sort her boy out.

The latest Star entry is simply humiliating, I just now feel really sorry for Jake, it seems like he's being used, not a pleasant site.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Isn't that the point of the National Enquirer.

I had a very brief glance through the other latest UK tabloids on my way home (Tuesday's the main publication date). Thankfully it seems most are totally ignoring Reeke, why bother with some crappy fauxmance when you can discuss Jordan's boob job endlessly (much more entertaining).

    ReplyDelete
  42. dd3, and I am sure Star made up that crap too. Why so many of you are freaking out over it I don't know. it is tabloid bullshit. We clearly saw Jake was working so why get so bent out of shape at a tabloid making up a fake story.

I am looking forward to the Zodiac dvd. Thanks for that post, Special. The commentary from Jake and RDJ should be very good. I am really glad so many critics are putting Zodiac on their lists.

    ReplyDelete
  43. ne.. its humiliating because it is made up crap. Although it would obviously just be really tragic if it were real, any sane woman would vomit on the spot if their boyfriend went on like that.

    ReplyDelete
  44. dd3, you could say every tabloid story is humiliating. What is the point of freaking out about it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Happy birthday Tom:), though i`m a little late, sorry:( Love you!!!
I lurk here for most of the time, not because i`ve got more interested in Jake and Austins personal life(though looking forward to "the informers" and "brothers"), but because of the people here and all the other interesting information you post or link to.
I`m still very interested in reading Ted:) My first thought when he wrote about baby-Tile this time, is something similar like someone over on WFT wrote earlier today. I just think Ted means baby-Tile is "finished". It`s not waiting to be done in the oven anymore. I won`t comment too much if i think it`s a great idea if Jake and Austin have become fathers, guess you all know what i would say during these times anyway.
JJ..., he seems weird and didn`t quite know if the baby-Tile story was true, but he did think Halle Berry, J.L and Nicole Kidman were pregnant, and always thought so even though there (sometimes?) were denials.
My brother and sister in law want me to start watch "Greys Anatomy", if i liked these types of shows i would to support TR. Knight, i just don`t, so me and my husband watch "How i met your mother " instead. Well, we got the DVD in the mail five days ago and have already seen 17 episodes. Our type of humour. We loved "Friends" and "Seinfeld", but we love this one more.
Before i leave, i just wan`t to say that IF baby-Tile excists, i don`t think Ted would say it straight out. There are many people who still are waiting for Toothy, and saying that during these times, i don`t think would be accepted with big smiles. I think Ted likes Jake and to some degree, want`s to protect him. Saying a baby IS, would make a lot of his fans dislike him.

  46. Yay for a picture of Jake with family!! Let's hope it's a trend. :)

I absolutely cannot wait to get the Zodiac DVD but it's going to have to wait until funds are somewhat replenished. It's a sumptuously assembled film on all fronts; I think it's going to remain a sleeper classic for decades to come, maturing and coming into its own like a fine wine. It was just too rich and big for the movie-going public at large. I was thrilled to see it land on so many best of lists, however. Those who knew it was special gave it its due.

Talking of favourite scenes, one that's really stayed with me is when Graysmith starts doing his detective work while at work and he pulls the phone into an empty office. You're just beginning to observe his intensity and resolve being born. Jake is great in that scene. Those eyes, I tell you, they're worth their weight in gold.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Please define 'freaking out'.

From what I can see the folks here are just commenting on the nauseating factor of yet one more piece of PR fed tabloid crap, as is our want, and purpose, here.

Give us something positive to talk about, like Jake out with his mother, and we also discuss that.

I see no, nor was there any 'freaking out.'

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ok if you were a crew member on the "Brothers" set, why in the hell would you be complaining about the Tobey/ Jake 'feud'..... Dudes! Shut up! You're getting free stuff! Let'em duke it out to the death and maybe you'll get a new car!

    ReplyDelete
  49. The Star story is vomit-inducing I think because we know it's made up, and our favorite couple has to take a back seat to it (if they are a couple).

Ordinarilly, romantic schmoopiness is great fun and sexy, and very rewarding for both partners, if you catch my meaning, and it's great if your partner would like to have "you" for his/her birthday, dinner, or whatever. But then again, I'm not a sane woman, nor do I want to be. ;)

I also agree, and am very happy, that Jake makes the kinds of films that the more you view them, the more you appreciate and enjoy them. :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. If I asked the Mrs. what she wanted for her birthday and she said, "you," I would find that gagtastic! But then again, I am the least romantic person on Earth!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Heh, if my partner said that to me, I'd jump immediately into the sack with him! And I should have added "dessert" to my above post! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  52. it's the way that you say it;) If he said in a low, sexy, "let's go to my trailer and play backgammon NOW!" kind of way it would TOTALLY work for me. But all this smiling tenderly and gazing adoringly into each others eyes, while angels sing and scatter rose petals over them, with everyone else on set looking on, teary eyed with the romance of it all, makes me want to puke. But hey, I'm just a sad, cynical, heartless freak, WTF do I know about true love? [/sarcasm]

    ReplyDelete
  53. Just flash of those dimples and I know what he wants. But which dimples? ; )

WOW!! Who writes this shit? Very funny and amazing. lol

    ReplyDelete
  55. LOL - I totally agree about the backgammon, ItAin'tWhatYouSay. We're doing vomit-inducing parody, EastCoast Fan (or trying to, anyway)! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love me some Jake, but have to say, I've got Vince winning that battle. lol

    ReplyDelete
  57. ^^And remember, there's a writer's strike going on so ya can't be too picky right now! They're doin' the best they can at US Weakly under the circumstances! lol

I agree, a demand for backgammon is great, but angels playing harps in the background while the cast and crew sighs is pure bleech!!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. True love's in the day-to-day, not the rose petals.

    ReplyDelete
  59. From Just Jared:

"Reese Witherspoon sends her children to the set of her new film Four Christmases (costarring Vince Vaughn) ahead of her because she knows she’s a target for the paparazzi. What a mom!"

    How do read that?

    ReplyDelete
  60. "And remember, there's a writer's strike going on so ya can't be too picky right now! They're doin' the best they can at US Weakly under the circumstances! lol"

    That made my day.

Your so right, so right! Guess they'll get better in time huh.

    ReplyDelete
  61. ^^LOL or worse! ;)

JessSaying, as long as she didn't send Jake on ahead, I'm ok with it. lol

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hope you feel better Special. :)
I certainly do; was finally able to go through a full day at the office today. All you in the northern states beware of that bizarre thaw. It usually frees up nasty bugs that in recent years seem to require rounds and rounds of antibiotics to disappear. :(

I got my copy of Zodiac on my way home, hurray! Gonna watch it this week-end.

I remember playing today's song again and again and again until that 45 was full of scratches and totally ruined. It sure brings back tons of memories. Does anyone remember the song Kid by The Pretenders? I think it came out at about the same time, which is probably why it popped up in my head; of course, I'm also thinking about that kid who sure can sing... ;)

Good to hear that mama G is once again visible. Off to watch this new pic now. :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. ...as long as she didn't send Jake on ahead, I'm ok with it.

But, she did! Don't you remember that SF aquarium sighting? Jake walked by first and then Reese?

    ReplyDelete
  64. LOL - you're right! But then again, lately he's been miles ahead of her all the time! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Been a busy couple days for me and 2 more to go. Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone. Sure glad to see Jake with Mom.

Ted sure sounds confident that jeese will end. I sure hope he right and I hope its soon. I think we all want the real Jake back.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Totally agree with Wicked and it ain't what you say. That Star story sounds like something out of a bad romance novel, not real life.

Nice to hear from you NG. I think you may be right about Baby Tile, I think things are too "hot" right now for a baby.

One thing I didn't think of yesterday re Ted, it seems like Ted was addressing all of the trolls with his letters this week. I'm sure he knows they're out there bashing him over this.

    ReplyDelete
  67. i want the real jake full front. not just the back. gimme the neck to nibble, some wings to hug me, thighs to spread eagle & a drumstick to savor.
