New Features Poll

Spesh and I have been talking about ways to expand the blog. Now let me be clear, we are not changing our J&A focus. We would like to add some features to the blog, sort of like the Out Spotlight is already, that are not necessarily related to J&A that people might like to talk about. It would also really help us during those J&A news droughts too!

Before you vote, let me explain what we mean by each of these-

Movie Club- we would pick a movie (probably through getting suggestions and voting on it), everyone would watch it, and then we would have a discussion about it. I've been told they do this at DC and I remember when there was talk about doing it at WFT. A few people have mentioned to us that they would like this.

Book Discussion- we could do this like the movie club or we could do it where we have a post monthly or every so often where we talk about gay literature, books people are reading, etc.

Music Discussion- we thought this might work by featuring a gay musical artist and then encouraging discussion about gay music or whatever people are listening to. This one is my own selfishness; I love to find out about new artists and this seemed like a good way to do it!

Reports on Gay News- what we had in mind for this one is to do a post that is sort of a round-up of different events that have happened recently that are important to the gay community.

As always, one computer- one vote. And you can only vote for one. I would also like to hear suggestions from you all about which features you might like that I have not listed. This poll will remain open, and be linked in our posts, for at least a few days to give everyone time to vote. When we close it, Spesh and I will talk and decide what we want to do. We can't guarantee what changes will occur. We may incorporate one feature or a few, it depends on how people vote and what we feel we can do a good job with. We are merely looking for ways to make the blog more interactive and encourage participation.

Happy Birthday to Jake's mom, Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal!

  1. Rattler, thanks for your explanation of your comment. I do hate, and I'm not afraid to say hate, cryptic. I am a plain speaker. I hope people always know where I stand on things because I do try to be very clear. And yes, I have transcended all forms of coolness. So that makes me UNCOOL, and damn proud of it! :) If you can't beat 'em, transcend 'em!

  2. This dropped into my Google alerts last night-

    Reeke at Mozza

Guess they had to pimp that one out a bit.

  3. Can you or anyone please explain to me how gay rumors would affect Jake getting parts?? I would think if he's getting passed over for roles it would be because of his acting abilities??

"Strangely enough, some gay actors say that while America's comfort level has improved considerably, the entertainment industry hasn't caught up. It may be 2007, they say, but the vibe inside studio casting offices can feel surprisingly like 1957.

These actors say being outed remains a huge threat to a performer's career, particularly for men. An announcement, even a rumor, can eliminate them from the running for straight roles – the roles that make up the vast majority of available work.
    ...
"From an actor's point of view, I understand why they are scared to death of saying anything for fear of being pigeonholed," casting director Matt Messinger says. "Gay people are cast as straight all the time. But if you're asking if things have improved for openly gay actors, I can't say it's any easier now."

  4. Eater Blog -- picked it up from the sighting from Defamer. Doubt they pimped to them. Would Jake want that bouncing around with his foodie/foodist friends?

Have to say that I was more amused about the sighting about Todd English pacing around the tables talking on the phone. Why? English started in Boston with his first place Olives and has blown into a mega amount of restaurants much like his ego!!

  5. Great article Clarity. Thanks for linking that for us!

  6. Special K...the poster was actually answering my post from earlier this morning.

Thank You for the link (for clarity). Good article. I thought this quote was particularly interesting:

Despite the risk, some actors feel there's little choice but to deal directly with their sexuality. Fabian says he temporarily hid his sexual preference during acting school. The result, he says: “My acting was terrible. You're constantly putting layer on top of layer.”

Wicked..I think all the suggestions are really good. I'm going to think more about it for a bit before I put in my choice.

  7. this should clear things up a bit in the future. I just officially joined Blogger.

  8. Eastcoastfan: Thank you for your candid post. Hang out with all of us more often - OMG is a very nice place to be around.

FLF: Ah, another Sagittarian. I am at the cusp - the stars do wonders for me; they should be working overtime for Jake these days :)

Wicked: I have to disagree with you once again. I have been following your posts for a long long time and you are one of the coolest persons I have ever come across in the Toothy community. OMG would not exist without you.
You will get used to my cryptic posts one of these days :) Just wait and see.
And to both Wicked and Special K: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. For today's post.

  9. I would have voted for all of them but the book discussion if I could have--I'm afraid I'd never get the books read. It was a tough choice between movies and music, but I decided to vote for movies as I thought it might give us more to talk about.

  10. Got in touch with Sally Kern too!

    Here's the clip

Voicemail full. What a surprise, eh?

  11. You will get used to my cryptic posts one of these days :)

No, uh, I won't. What I don't like about cryptic is that there are always folks who won't get it, and they usually include me! So that leaves people out of the conversation. Also, we have a lot of people here for whom English is not their first language, and they have a really hard time with both cryptic and sarcasm. That's why I try to avoid both and just be clear. And still I fail more often than I'd like.

I do appreciate your uncryptic kind words, though. :)

  12. Re the why hide he's gay discussion, Jake's most recent and upcoming roles lean towards the leading man type - Brothers, Nailed, Namath. They would be hard to pull off if the audience cant get past the he's gay part. Oddly though, a friend of mine who is totally indifferent to Jake just saw Rendition and said to me he looked so uncomfortable in that brief bathroom scene with a woman that she read him as gay just from watching that scene. No coaching from me.

  13. Just read that Two Sides to Gay article. Thanks so much for posting it, For Clarity. It seems that the problem is with TPTB thinking that people will not accept gay actors in straight roles, rather then the public actually feeling this way. People love T. R. and NPH in their shows and seem to have no problem with it.

  14. I see Jake as a man whomhas lost confidence in his acting abilities along the way. I also think Jake is easily manipulation by strong willed women and has been convinced that he has to be hetero to succedd in HW.

They may be right but I wish Jake would just knock them out with his acting abilities.. If Jake is living a lie it will show in his perfromances. I truly believe. that. I also believe that jake has over estimated the power reese has in HW. I really don't think she is very well liked.

  15. Great music today! And in tune with my choice - I voted for the movie club, of course. ;) But honestly I wouldn't mind if any other of the choices on the list won. :)

That article sounds extremely interesting. I'm going to check it right now. Thanks for the link "for Clarity".

    ReplyDelete
  16. I thought of that as well, Tom, it would make it twice as tough to be playing two roles, as Clarity pointed out from the linked article. :(

I voted for a movie club too; it's more immediate than a book club, although that is great too. We can watch a movie quickly and be able to discuss it soon. Music is very important to me, but I think with movies we can cover all the bases - music, film, and a book or short story that it may have been based on. Great music today - I loved this film too, I'm kind of a Japan-ophile anyway, is there such a word? ;)

I sometimes think the general public isn't as concerned with an actor's sexuality or what roles they can play, as the TPTB seem to think they are.

  17. Would you believe that the Memoirs of a Geisha soundtrack was the first time that Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman ever worked together?!

  18. Who believes the Jamie Lee sighting? I sort of did, until I got to the part about him taking pictures of her at the table. That little tidbit just smacks of PR plant.

    No, I didn't know that! It's a gorgeous, evocative soundtrack. :)

  20. Who believes the Jamie Lee sighting? I sort of did, until I got to the part about him taking pictures of her at the table. That little tidbit just smacks of PR plant.

I might have believed it if it wasn't for the fact that pictures of Jamie Lee shopping with her son in Santa Monica on the 12th had come out before someone remembered that they saw Reeke having lunch with her of all people...

I'm sure it's just one of those coincidences again, though.

  21. M, I totally don't agree with your friend. I thought Jake was amazingly sexy and totally believable in that bathroom scene. Whatever his sexuality in real life, I sure felt it when he was kissing that woman. ;p

    ReplyDelete
  22. Stubborn, where are the pics of JLC and her son? And even if she was out with her son, she can still have lunch with Jake. People do more than one thing during a day. I always take these sightings with a grain of salt but it is possible.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree; I, uh, felt it too when he was kissing and kissing her. He's very sexy in Rendition. :)

I saw the pics on celebrity-babies.com.

And I'm not saying that it's not possible that Jamie Lee did two different things in one day.
I'm just saying that I find it a huge coincidence that a sighting of Reeke with Jamie Lee was posted after photos of her being in roughly the same area as Reeke showed up on the internet.

  25. Sorry M, one more person who disagrees with your friend! ;) :)

I found him totally HOT in that bathroom scene. Looking, moving even sounding naturally and effortlessly sexy (love that just-out-of-bed sleepy voice...). One more proof - IMHO - that a gay male actor can be totally convincing in a love scene with a woman. :)

Regarding the article linked by "for Clarity": I had already read that one; very interesting stuff. I think from now on I'll copy and paste my favorite articles in a Word file so I can always have a copy should the links stop working.

Talking about movies, I'll be watching A Very Long Engagement tonight. This is gonna be interesting as I've already read the book and loved it. I've been told the movie does justice to the novel... we'll see! :)

BTW, I think the pics where Jake and Reese seemed to have packed the pounds were misleading. I'm sure they're actually getting thinner; what with all this cuddling and kissing and phoning and picture taking during meals... :D :D :D

Ok now that's a bit unfair. In April, I'll switch mine to Jake then promise to alternate each month!

  28. No, uh, I won't.

Whenever I encountered a grown-up who seemed to me at all enlightened, I would experiment on him with my drawing Number One, which I have always kept. I wanted to see if he really understood anything. But he would always answer, "That's a hat." Then I wouldn't talk about boa constrictors or jungles or stars. I would put myself on his level and talk about bridge and golf and politics and neckties. And my grown-up was glad to know such a reasonable person.

  30. I'm all for clever and witty wordplay, just the Oscar Wilde fan in me.

Intentially cryptic or obtuse, however, just smacks of pretention and an intellectual arrogance that is unfounded.

If you have something to say, one should find the most articulate way of expressing the thought without trying to show up your reader.

    Helps to avoid misunderstandings.

  31. I tried to warn you that I wasn't cool.

Ah, that's a nice use of the word warn! So benign.
You are very cool, yes, it is true. Being cool has nothing to do with jungles, stars and boa constrictors.

  32. Intentially cryptic or obtuse, however, just smacks of pretention and an intellectual arrogance that is unfounded.

    I am definitely amused.
Intellectual arrogance is all-pervasive. It can sneak into any sentence... tip toe, tip toe.

  34. Hi guys, I voted for the movie club because I love film. News is interesting too but perhaps that could just be integrated into posts or comments. I'm wondering if there is a way to expand the out spot light to semi out people {actually this is just an excuse to discuss Jodie F ;)}I'd also really like to discuss Oscar Wilde and Arthur Rimbaud, both who have films made about their lives. Actually maybe we could also discuss Jodie via film club. Whatever you guys think. Wicked and Special, you two are doing a great job keeping the blog interesting and fun. Keep up the good work :-*

  35. I like the idea of movies. Honestly, I don't read books any more. I am embarrassed to admit that since I used to read all the time, but there is too much slash to read, although it has died off a bit since Heath's passing. Music would work too, and the songs could be posted here to make it easier.

Re the rendition scene, I did mention my friend is not into Jake. Does not find him sexy at all. Go figure, everyone's taste differs.

Babblers annoying DCers again with their reeke is real and Jake is straight agenda. The only real defenders out there, when you think about it. Says a lot.

  36. "Babblers annoying DCers again with their reeke is real and Jake is straight agenda. The only real defenders out there, when you think about it. Says a lot."

Lets put things a little bit in perspective. Of how many fans (whether they are Jaustin, Jeese or simply Jake fans) are we speaking here? At OMG last polls (Jake & Reese, Jakes movies) there were 41 votes - 9 of them at the J&R poll obviously "Babblers". Austins poll had 31 votes. About 20 people who are actually commenting.
At DC before J & R there were about 20 regulars posting. Things have changed there and the annoying ones are not only the J&R fans.
On Gyllenbabble about 10 regulars and some anonymous. At WDW lets say 15 regulars.
IHJ has over 13.000 members - regularly posting I counted round about 30 people.
So we are speaking of not more than 35 - 40 regulars, some of them posting on more than one board.
On the gossip blogs IMO also mostly the same people - and it is so easy to fake names and bash other people (like some of you have experienced at PHs blog)

Does anyone really believe Jakes PR people are getting grey hair? I don´t think so.

On IMDB there was a poll
"EW recently announced their Top 30 Actors Under 30 -- who do you think will have the longest, most successful career"? Jake won with 24% and 5.432 votes- nearly 2000 votes more than the second - Ryan Gosling.
I do not agree with those who believe that the Reese story has hurt Jakes career. If "Brothers" and "Nailed" will fail critically and box office wise (Although both films are not big budget projects and nobody is expecting blockbusters) then I will start to worry....

And I voted for movie discussions.
