Not so fast guys....

Think Jake and Austin were first famous A & J couple with a following?

Think again.

Way back in there was Akbar & Jeff. Who? Akbar & Jeff were a couple created by Matt Groening before The Simpsons, in his book Life in Hell. Akbar & Jeff are have been a couple since the 80's, and have been showing the ups and downs of coupledom that everyone can relate to in their own unique way. They swing between love and hate within one reading.

Groening was quick to acknowledge that they are indeed a gay couple, when it was not the greatest climate to do so. Here is a great description of them from Bartleby.
Almost radical at the time they were introduced, when few gay couples were being portrayed, let alone in a positive light, Akbar and Jeff have continued to serve not as role models, per se, but as humorous meditations on gay coupledom and the banalities of daily life together. It’s almost an off-handed response to the still-lingering criticisms that gay relationships are short-lived, marred by infidelity, or hard to understand. In one famous cartoon, Akbar and Jeff fret over visiting a gay bar, only to find upon arrival that all the patrons look exactly like them, donning fezzes and wearing similar shirts. The comic absurdity and ultimate likability of the pair is what has given them such longevity. They’re stuck together, they know it, and most of the time, they’re happy with it

Groening did not make them political activists, but allowed comment on many of the things they faced as couple from discrimination, legal issues in the gay community, and during a set of AIDS related strips HIV tests, from in his strips for papers.

Akbar & Jeff show their love by touching fingers and skipping together, the first hint of sex makes them flip their Fez. Seems like Groening did this in a way so for the strip could run in all of the syndicated papers at the time. An archive of his interview with The Advocate (Advocate 571 (February 26, 1991): 30-35) reveals much more about this twosome. At the time Groening was going to have them break up but recognized they couldn't be without the other for that long and said this:

Can you tell us why they break up? [Laughing] It's obvious, isn't it? [More laughter] They can't stand each other. [Even more laughter] But they love each other. They can't live with or without each other. What I like about them is this: When they criticize each other, it's like when somebody exactly the same as you criticizes you. It's hilarious, like you don't see the mirror.

Why do you draw such similar guys?
I like to write about relationships. What's great about having characters who are identical is that I can't be accused of taking sides. If one character were a man or a woman, I could be accused of taking a shot against men or a show against women. Or if it were two women or two men, I could side with the one who is more attractive or whatever. If people say Akbar and Jeff are a comment on gay relationships, fine. But I think that they're a comment on all relationships or that maybe it's time for straight people to be able to see themselves in gay people or learn something from gay people.

  1. I have not commented on the US story. I wanted to wait until I actually read it and could think on it some. I finally was able to find a copy of it last night. Didn't buy it, just read the story. I found it ironic that this couple is referred to as "so private." US is a PR shill. Everything in it is sanctioned by PR. The only way they would include those "intimate" details about Reese's birthday and Easter and the pictures of the house she bought, is with PR approval. Even if you believe this couple is real, how anyone can say they are not pimping this relationship out for publicity purposes is beyond me. And everything that comes out is always perfectly timed.

Jake is complicit in all this. He was not drafted into this campaign, he enlisted. Maybe his tour of duty has not turned out like he thought it would. I don't know all the reasons why he has made this choice, but it is a choice. And it's one he is making over and over with each day that he stays in this fauxmance. I truly hope that whatever the reasons are, they are worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I get a little Darko when I think of the reasoning. Challenging to understand. You don't know the whole story, maybe never will. But I always look at the why as the sacrifice of one for the good of others (Austin and maybe baby).

Again they felt that this way the only option at the time. Austin to do so wouldn't be enough to protect the relationship from the scrutiny. But Jake, he could and Austin slip out of the spotlight. They could have their life away from it. Jake stepping up to take the bright light of scrutiny and all that comes with it, the good and the bad. But everything most important is saved.

  3. Wicked, ITA with your post. Jake has made a choice, yes. But surely there must be a better way?
I am a bit surprised at Reese. Never liked or disliked her but now...Sheesh! what a total bitch! Why is she sooo hung up over Ryan? Looks like she will stop at nothing to rubbish him. You know, those flaring nostrils and jutting chin are beginning to look real scary!
I wonder if Reese and Jake have a contract drawn up for the bearding. It's something that Reese would, I think, definitely do. I guess if there's one, Jake is trapped till it ends.
So the whole bearding game was to straighten Jake's image and to show the world Reese was over Ryan and on with her new love? I would say they failed miserably on both counts.
I honestly don't believe the bearding is to protect Austin. A baby? maybe.

  4. On second thoughts, maybe Reesey just wants to ruin Ryan any which way she can cos he walked out on her! AND found himself a girl to love...hee, hee I think I'm becoming a Ryan fan :D

    ReplyDelete
  5. The one thing I'm CERTAIN about is that there's a contract :) I think Jake needs better representation, though.

Wow, I'd forgotten Akbar and Jeff :) Good songs today and yesterday, guys. *

  6. me too, flf! i'm gonna see Stop Loss because I like Ryan now. the guy practically needs to be given sainthood after being trapped in that marriage.

Very cute post, I seem to remember Akbar and Jeff - and I've always loved this song.

I'm not sure what to say about the latest news, I think I need some time to process it all. :)

  8. Akbar & Jeff, what a great post.
but whatever happened to Toim and wicked? did they settle down into domestic bliss, never to be heard or seen from again and no fans asking about them? is that what happens to happy celebrity couples? or does wicked have tom chained up in a basement so he can't talk?

  9. I think they bought a ranchhouse on 7 acres in Obai. :)

  10. No it wasn't, we have a deed filed for property in Rancho Cucamonga under the name of The Wicked Good Realty Trust.

  14. I'm afraid I have to agree with you Wicked. I don't know Jake's reasons for signing on for this fauxmance, but I also hope it's worth it. Unfortunately, deep down I don't think he's doing it as a sacrifice for someone else's benefit. I think the benefit is mainly for his own career and he may have sacrificed something else much more valuable along the way when he signed up for this. I keep hoping that things will turn out well, but I'm not overly optimistic about any of it. In the meantime, I enjoy being part of this community and I want to continue to follow the careers of J&A to see how this will all play out.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thanks for this post, I'd completely forgotten about Akbar and Jeff. I never thought about how radical it was when it ran.

I agree Wicked, Jake signed up for this. Like BV I think he is doing it for career reasons. I"m not overly optimistic about this either. Do we really think, for example, that Sam Mendes would have hired Reese's love toy to play in Jarhead? I don't think so. Ditto for Ang Lee. I would feel the same way if he really was straight and really in relationship with Reese. He'll never regain that air of mystery and ambiguity he had about him, and he no longer looks confident and happy in the pr-approved pictures. No wonder the fans are not interested.

Couldn't agree more with gimpy's post in the previous thread, I had that thought about the pigs and going straight to Ojai as I was drifting off to sleep last night.

What? Tom is waaay too cheap for that! He won't get me any bling, remember? He got me a trailer home in South Jersey! That cheapo!

  17. Ohhhhhhh . . . maybe it was purchased with that Dallas Dimes fellah we've been reading about in Us & Them magazine? Hmmm... joint tenancy in superdomesticating bliss? Gotta wonder what's worth the sacrifice. ;)

And who took the pics of the house? Our friends Flynet.

  21. Flynet, don't leave home without it.

I keep picturing Jake & Austin touching fingers like Jeff & Akbar and breaking into silly grins.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Damn someone figured out today's inspiration for the post. : )

  23. That house is not even fitted with air conditioning. Looks like a barn.
It's a joke originating from PR to hide the real location of the house.

  24. :)

Makes me think of the first TT story.

And of course Austin would be the one taking off the clothes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The problem with the US Weekly cover story is...there is no story there. Nada. Are they engaged? Nope. Did they get married? Nope. Is she pregnant? Nope. Lovenest? Not a story. (Looks like a country/weekend home to me). Is the romance brand new? Nope.

So why is it the cover story of this week's US Weekly when there's no friggin story here????

    ReplyDelete
  26. So why is it the cover story of this week's US Weekly when there's no friggin story here????

The Babblers would say it's because they are the most popular HW couple! Squee!

The real answer is because Reese's PR is that good.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Reese's pr may be that good at getting magazine covers, but how many butts does it put in theater seats?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I wonder if they are trying to generate interest in a Reese and Jake Romantic comedy, not from fans, Hollywood doesn't really care about them. I was thinking more on the lines of Producers and or studios.

I don't think it will happen but you never know. Jake might put out for the right producer and make the project happen, who knows what Jake will do.

    ReplyDelete
  29. These is all about Reese. Even the cover of US says so. Jake is just a piece to the story.

Why the cover, not because she is America's sweetheart, but because she is the "most powerful" actress in Hollywood right now. It comes with perks, if you want to take press away from you Ex -- you can with just a phone call and some favors. Remember US is the magazine that has done the most Jeese promoting. She could call in the favor to grab the cover. Remember editorially, US is looking at it as Reese cover, and what that would pull in terms of sales, the Jeese is secondary in the equation.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So why is it the cover story of this week's US Weekly when there's no friggin story here????

    That's the story!

  32. In Celebitchy it has story of Ryan on Ellen show today. Ryan said when he did the 1st gay character on TV [One Life To Live} he got fan mail from gay teens saying he saved them from suicide. After hearing about his refusal to go along with Jay leno, seeing old pics of him working out with Jake [he seemed okay with it], his description of Reeke as bizarre [but not getting into it any further] it looks like Ryan might have more respect for gays than I thought. Even more than Jake, really, if he's playing his gay fans as idiots.

  34. recap:

Reeke lovey dovey pics at farmers market [used in US]

pics of Reese walking ahead and looking cold & bitchy with Jake on crutches following behind

separate pics of Reese & Jake supposedly together at coffehouse/chapel [take your pick!] but they were obviously not there at same time

Three sets pic of Jake alone

    1. car park dr appt w/brown shirt
    2. parking lot w/cruthes & Crocs
    3. Conservation lunch

Reese/kids at pig farm pics, no Jake [totally planned photo op]

    Reese BDay [J&R not seen]
    Easter {J&R not seen]

US story of Ojai house, easter, Reese bithday party

Jake or Reese not seen this week. But it doesn't mean they are together. [I wonder if Jake is pissed because he hasn't been papped with Reese the last 3 or 4 times]

What do you think is next? Photo op pics of the couple? Happy together or Reese pissed? Or pics of Jake alone, but that would make Reese look bad wouldn't it? I'm guessing the next set will have them together but not overly affectionate, like just getting coffee or breakfast. What does everyone else think?

  36. Seeing Akbar & Jeff here this morning completely made my day! I was a Matt Groening fan long before The Simpsons came along and I still have all my Life In Hell comics clipped from free weekly papers and nestled into several of his books. :)

I don't have much to add to the latest dog and pony show except that I agree with wicked that Jake enlisted himself in this. What I wonder is if he really thought about in a long-term way, especially the reaction of the general public. Regardless of any fan base, widespread indifference among any majority would be deadly. I think Jake was banking on his own star power remaining strong and merely being enhanced by Reese's. Instead, she - and he himself by associating - has drained him of everything he had. He shines best on his own - or with someone who truly compliments him. It's hard to comment on what looks like an empty vessel.

It's funny seeing comments on photos of Jake with his arm around Reese, saying he's "protecting her". Jake is merely complicit, he's not the one in charge.

The Bad Seed what I see the next few weeks will decide for me what kind of man I think Jake is.

I now believe that Ryan really hurt reese and that reese is angry and cannot let go. Right now it certainly appears that Ryan is the more adult of the two. Enuff said about reese and Ryan for me.

I can't wait to see what Jake does in the next couple weeks. He has looked so bad the last few months I cant believe he has any fans left. So this is how I see it. The man is head over heels in love(???) or not very bright if he continues on in this ridiculous childish soap opera. It has gotten so bad it is beginning to rank up there with Paris, Lindsay, and Britney. It has become a cartoon. Boris and Natasha, Olive Oyl and Popeye, and Jake and reese.

Ok Jake the next move is yours.Lets see who you really are.

  39. Remember, how ever this Jake and Reese thing ends (if it ends) it is not so much in Jake's control. I don't think his public image will be that harmed by a break up but Reese's might. In fact if there is a some comments about Jake being better off without her then again it hurts Reese more than Jake.

If Reese doesn't already have a replacement for Jake she would have to get one first. I think it will be made to look like it was he who was dumped, or possibly that it was mutual. Reese seems to be the one really interested in working this fauxmance right now.

  42. There's a totally bitchy but funny thread running on Datalounge right now about why Reese makes a bad beard.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think you people are being a bit too absolute in just how Jake can handle this. If this is a fauxmance then there is a contract behind this (probably verbal for the most part.) Jake could certainly end it at anytime but could suffer a good deal of blow back if it reflected badly on Reese.

Basically at this point he has to play along until a clean out is presented for both of them.

    ReplyDelete
  44. To witness blow back see Ryan Phillippe's press clippings from late '06 and early '07.

Also check her timing on the photo ops and US Weekly covers.

I do think Ryan is hitting back though. Remember his Viking movie with Abbie which all but confirmed they were still together was announced the day before Rendition premiered in Toronto.

Timing is everything in Hollywood and there are no coincidences or accidents.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I just saw the US article. WOW. Reese is still really bitter apparently. Jakes name could have been replaced by any other guy basically.

Ryan I'm sure knows exactly whats going on with R & J and sounds like he's happy to be out of the marriage. I'm sure him being so nice about it is making Reese crazy right about now.

I'm not sure what Jake can do at this point but I hope he hasn't gotten himself in so deep yet that this drama drags on indefinately. Unfortunately it looks like he has. Yikes..what a mess.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thanks a bunch for today's post Special. I didn't know Akbar & Jeff but the minimalist humor in the Gulf War strip is really my kind of stuff and makes me want to see more of them. :)

Re the US story: I guess pretty much everything I'm thinking is scattered throughout today's comments so I'll be brief… ha, ha, ha, just kidding!

London: The one thing I'm CERTAIN about is that there's a contract :)
ITA London. Whether written or verbal or whatever, I'm sure they have some kind of understanding and agreement and Jake has some "obligations" to fulfill, which is probably why although an adult he cannot do as he pleases for now or there might be hell to pay professionally.

BV: Unfortunately, deep down I don't think he's doing it as a sacrifice for someone else's benefit.
Bltb: I think Jake was banking on his own star power remaining strong and merely being enhanced by Reese's.
I don't think it was a totally sacrificial move from him either although I'm still thinking he might have thought at the time that Reese being an A-lister would be both a real boost to his image and career and the perfect cover for his real-life lover. Maybe his team knew how to massage his ego and dangled just the right prospects before him to have him sign on the dotted line.

Destiny: Do we really think, for example, that Sam Mendes would have hired Reese's love toy to play in Jarhead? (…) I would feel the same way if he really was straight and really in relationship with Reese.

WORD!!! This was supposed to "straighten" not "flatten" him out! It's probably one of Jake's grossest miscalculations when he signed up to be the other half of Reeke. On the other hand, things are so fucked up in HW that he might recover nicely when they break up. Press Now's analysis of a possible break-up and its aftermath sounds quite realistic to me.

Special: Why the cover, not because she is America's sweetheart, but because she is the "most powerful" actress in Hollywood right now. It comes with perks, if you want to take press away from you Ex -- you can with just a phone call and some favors.

Great point Special. I'm starting to believe that Reese is waging a vendetta against Ryan. And as much as I'm disappointed by Jake I'm sure he hadn't banked on this.

BTW, I will most probably see Stop Loss next week-end. I've already "enlisted" people to come with me. ;)

Thats so cool that they were identical but a gay couple.

  48. Great post Frenchy. Very well spoken. I also think that there is some type of contract. Not sure if it is about time or money or results. But this sure looks like it has the flavor of a time to move on this just hasn't worked out. Especially for Jake.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This was supposed to "straighten" not "flatten" him out!

frenchy this is a perfect descriptionn. the last months Jake looks flat and his personality is flat. not str8, not gay, not bi, no enigma, no charisma. sexless and flat and inert.

  51. This 'contract'...would The Reese Powers That Be threaten Jake should he decide to bow out before its end date? Would he be in some kind of physical danger? Woudl his life be forfit if he stood up tomorrow and told the truth?

Not an Insider, but I'm thinking the answer to all those questions is a big honking NO.

The only thing in danger of expiring should he decide the lies have become too much to handle is his film career. Ya know, there are literally millions of actors working outside of HW, far away from the Reeke reach. There are billions of people who live very happy and content lives outside of the entertainment industry. And Jake could certainly be one.

No matter how much of a bitch Reese is, whether his signature is on the bottom line (and I rather doubt that anyone would take him to court over breaching that contract) or it was only a handshake with the devil, Jake indeed CAN walk away from this whenever he wishes.

A test of his character indeed when a life of make-believe in an industry that survives and thrives on the creativity of GLBT genuis is more important than breathing the fresh air on the other side of The Closet door.

What little sympathy I had for Jake evaporated with the walking his beard pics four days after Heath's death.

I agree Happily but I've come to the conclusion that Jake, who was born, fed and raised in HW and nothing but, has a lot of trouble picturing his life outside the entertainment industry. And to be honest, my love for him as an actor has not abated so I'd be really sad if he became a chef or a carpenter.

All I wish right now is for Reeke to end ASAP. God, Brothers looks like eons away! :(

  53. I just read the US story over at IHJ. It really is just about the most gag-inducing thing I've read in years. Full of pr bullshit, and nothing is safe. For example, the stuff about Reese having her own life, implying that Kiki didn't. Talk about revisionist history, as I recall it was the other way around since Jake wasn't working as much as she was.

I wonder with Jake and Austin's friends think when they walk by the newstand, stand in line at the store, etc. and see that cover story--especially Austin's friends, and his family, since most of them are not HW types. Hell, I don't see how Austin puts up with it, that whole article entirely invalidates Austin and his life with Jake.

    ReplyDelete
  54. And just how did it occur that Jake and Reese have been together for two years? That's what it says in the US extravaganza. I must have missed all of that. :( I really wish one or the other would just say flat out that they are together, in a direct quote, or is it really a case of any publicity is better than none at all? :( I just hope that it all comes to an end soon if it's not true.

    ReplyDelete
  55. If you read carefully the reason for the eventual breakup is included in the article. They will breakup over having more children. Reese will come off as a concerned mother, worried about the two she has and everything they have been through. There will be a baby (or more) in Ryan's life by then and it will be spun as too much for the kids to handle both parents pushing them aside for new lives. She will sacrifice her happiness for her kids well being and Jake will be heartbroken and understanding.

    The article states:

"Jake definitely wants his own kids".

"Reese wants to take the kid thing slow."

    Or something like that.

I am over the audacity of her team doing this on this particular weekend. A lot of what has gone on has been leading to this and laying the groundwork for it so I should not be surprised.

As Ryan would say "It's bizarre but you know it's going to happen so in some way you are prepared".

  56. Acting is part of the Arts. Art is something that can not be turned on or off, it just is. To walk away or be force out of it isn't like just moving on to do something else. Yes Jake has a lot of other interests, that he may explore, but acting is his passion. (well work wise)

The Rock and the Hard Place

Hollywood is about access and favors. If he pulled out and left Reese high and dry, because her position in the hierarchy right now, she could effectively black ball him in HW. Look what she is doing to her ex. Think about what she could do to someone who would make her look like a fool and liar.

Being black balled he could lose the standing he had in the HW, and I am not talking what the public sees, but more importantly what it does not see. Calls not returned, meetings rescheduled into oblivion, doors shut. Not that he would be kick out completely but can see him getting kicked down in the pecking order. Does Reese have it in her to do that. Absolutely. She didn't get to be on the top of the heap being America's Sweetheart.

He has to play this out until the end of the contract. (You bet there is one with Reese involved in it) Not saying that he is happy about what this has turned into. He knows this is total bust for his PR. But he's in it until it's done.

You wonder if Ted did know this was coming and emphasized Jake's low key ways as his standard M.O. as opposed to what Reese was setting up to do.

    ReplyDelete
  57. The article says also that "they have nothing in common but each other"!?!? They do have the same same PR firm in common. Doesn't sound like a match made in Heaven to me. The fact that he hasn't said anything directly about this so-called relationship, other than ambiguous comments, says it all to me. Until then, I can't take it seriously.

I agree. Producers, publicists et al would consider him unpredictable, unreliable, a traitor to the clan. It's quite possible Jake is gritting his teeth thinking that when all this shit is over some people will be indebted to him.

They were introduced by their publicist. Later the story was changed to a friend dragged Ryan to her 21st birthday party. Which is half true it is where the meeting took place but the "friend" was the publicist.

  61. Ok, last post for tonight.

Speaking of that "they have nothing in common" business, weren't they supposed to have A LOT in common when the whole rumors were launched? Both serious actors, both family-oriented, both of the stay-at-home variety, both eschewing the party scene, both looking for a stable relationship, etc., etc., etc.???

    'night all!

  62. eyes, thanks for posting about the data lounge thread on reese and bearding, I got a good laugh out of it. Also pretty entertaining is the thread on whether anyone in HW who is 100% straight--which of course includes one of the delusional fangirls insisting that Jake, Chace, Jesse Metcalfe, etc. is straight.

    ReplyDelete
  63. The whole charade is a classic case of best laid plans. I can just see PR doing a presentation outlining all the wonderful benefits of the fauxmance. Even I could have sold the concept, it practically writes itself. But many a business plan does not work out. Remember Cokes new flavor. Same thing here, unanticipated response by the fandom. In my opinion it may have worked had the woman been unmarried, younger and with no children, but they both needed something at the same time, and so it wound up being Reeke. Disaster.

Reese is 32, newly single after a troubled marriage. It's been about a year now. What will end this is that she will meet someone she wants. At 32 a woman is in her sexual prime. He'll be older, but not old, more mature, succesful and powerful. There is no better aphrodeseiac for a woman like her than a powerful man.

  64. Watched a video of Ryan on Ellen. She asked about the gay character too. Asked if his people told him not to do it. Ryan said he did not have any people back then, so he just did it. Ellen says at least 3 times in the rest of the interview, if you had people they would have told you not to do it.

I too plan to go see Stop Loss. It's getting good reviews and I feel the need to support Ryan right now.

  66. I love the web. The Jay Leno flap with Ryan has spawned a new wesite. Mygayestlook.com See defamer for more info. They are all giving Jay the finger. Hilarious, but fitting.

I told my husband we are going to see Stop Loss - he is of the viet nam generation and says they had stop loss even then. He is excited about seeing the movie. Did not get stop lossed himself but knew some who did. But in those days it meant a couple months longer, not a whole tour.

  70. Ryan is by no means a saint but he is handling the public side of this thing a hell of a lot better.

What gets me is that this woman is supposed to be a global ambassador for women. WTF? She takes everything women have worked for back a hundred years. Avon has managed to insult every woman out there. They may as well bring Lindsay Lohan in as the junior ambassador.

  71. Remember Cokes new flavor.

What I remember is how happy everyone was when Coke "Classic" came back and how much it sold. I think new Coke helped that. I always thought they came up with new Coke to boost the sales of the old Coke.

Note to the Move on Troll- if you want to move on, then do so by all means.
