Out Spotlight XVI

Today we switch gears from entertainment to politics. U. S. Congressman Barney Frank is the first member of the U. S. Congress to voluntarily come out. Frank was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives for 8 years and was elected to the U. S. Congress in 1981. Rep. Frank earned a law degree from Harvard during his service in the state legislature. He has served as the representative for Massachusetts' 4th district for the past 27 years. Known as one of the most liberal, funniest, and smartest people in Congress, Frank did not come out until 1987. Frank said that he primarily had relationships with hustlers to protect his secret.

One of these escorts, Steve Gobie, got Frank into trouble in 1990 when it was discovered that Gobie had run an escort service from Frank's apartment without Frank's knowledge. The House Ethics Committee found no evidence that Frank was aware of this but the House did vote to reprimand him for his relationship with a prostitute. Interestingly, Congressman Larry Craig, along with Newt Gingrich, was at the forefront of the push to have Frank expelled or censured. Since his coming out, Frank has had two longterm relationships, with Herb Moses and Sergio Pombo.

In 1995, Rep. Frank was referred to as "Barney Fag" by then-House Majority Leader Dick Armey. Armey apologized and said it was a slip of the tongue. Frank did not accept this explanation, saying, "I turned to my own expert, my mother, who reports that in 59 years of marriage, no one ever introduced her as Elsie Fag."

Frank believes in outing closeted politicians who are against gay rights, a rule known as "the Frank Rule." Frank had this to say about it on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher in 2006- "I think there's a right to privacy. But the right to privacy should not be a right to hypocrisy. And people who want to demonize other people shouldn't then be able to go home and close the door and do it themselves."

left-handed, gay Jew. I've never felt, automatically, a member of any majority."

  2. Good morning all -

I have to tell you how much I love our Out Spotlights - it's important to hear about those who are out, and it's just really interesting and enjoyable to read about fascinating individuals, period.

    Barney's a great Congressman. :)

My short answer- uh, no, she's way too boring for that, dear.

  6. lol!!! Not even the ONTD crowd is buying fakey's BI from last moth (wonder why that blog got arounf to posting it a month later).

The ONTD poster is a gyllenspooner, and proud of it, read her posts. She posted that for shits and giggles....

  8. Hi gang! Great, great Spotlight Wicked! I checked the article about Barney Frank's coming-out and the first line bears re-posting and repeating:

Reaction to my coming-out helped me grasp two important points. First, most Americans aren't homophobic; they just think they're supposed to be. Second, concealing our sexual orientation helps keep straight people ignorant of the personal and social costs of homophobia.

What do you guys think of the Frank Rule and should it be applied to entertainment?

Ok, outing is such an explosive topic that for the time being I'll just say that if a guy like Tom Cruise, who is bearding (IMO) and who actively and vigorously champions a homophobic cult, was outed tomorrow morning in the papers I wouldn't be heartbroken.

  9. Help, I think I need therapy. I've come home from a quick trip into town and have realised that I've just brought several items of clothing which would appear to be mimicking Reese's NY look. I'm truly horrified with myself, firstly because having slagged off the rampmant consumerism on show during Reeke's recent love fest i've just done exactly the same and secondly that bloody woman appears to be influencing my taste. This isn't the first time this as happened, I've now got the coat, at least three Reeke influenced tops and the bag. The moment I find myself looking at black pumps I may have commit myself.

One thing can be said for Reeke, it may be doing neither of their careers and reputations any good, but its certainly helping in some small way to boost the UK economy.

  10. This isn't the first time this has happened, I've now got the coat, at least three Reeke influenced tops and the bag.

    LOL!

Hey Meg, Reese is certainly not my favorite actress and certainly not my favorite person at the moment but one thing I can't deny is the girl's usual impeccable style. You probably left the stores with great stuff. ;)

  11. This isn't the first time this as happened, I've now got the coat, at least three Reeke influenced tops and the bag.

Sorry, but that's wrong on so many levels! Reese's fashion sense is as dull as her personality.

  12. This was a great spotlight today. I had no idea about Barney Frank. I think thats great that he made a decision to take control of his life and be himself even at the risk of his career.

Although I don't believe in outing anyone...I also don't think that hypocrites should be allowed to flourish and spread ignorance and intolerance.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sorry, but that's wrong on so many levels! Reese's fashion sense is as dull as her personality.

I'm glad you said this. I don't like Reese's style at all, but I have been accused of having the fashion sense of mud! And I really don't like that black bag she carries. I feel a bit better about myself now.

I also don't think that hypocrites should be allowed to flourish and spread ignorance and intolerance.

That's why I love the Frank Rule, and the quote that he gave about it-

"I think there's a right to privacy. But the right to privacy should not be a right to hypocrisy. And people who want to demonize other people shouldn't then be able to go home and close the door and do it themselves."

And did you guys just love that Larry Craig, then a congressman, was one of the main proponents trying to get Frank expelled from Congress during the Gobie scandal? Pot, kettle, black, anybody?

  14. Speaking of politics, here's a video featuring comments from an Oklahoma state legislator at a gathering in her district.

  15. Barney does a lot of great things for the Commonwealth, and it is his service and commitment that he is recognized for. Don't take this the wrong way, but his orientation is such a non issue to the majority of the voters. They vote for him for what he has done to better the Commonwealth, not who he lives with.

Yet Barney has balanced it all out being a advocate and voice for the GLTB community while working for all the interests of his constituents. Yes there have been some dark moments, but he has charted through it with a lot humor and Frank talk.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Never discount the fangurl impact on a poll Wicked. I think Austin is equally good in JFC and Deadwood, but the latter won out for me (and probably others) because he got to be a sexy bad boy, whereas in JFC he wasn't a human.

I really like Barney Frank, and he's a good example of how different life is when you're in the closet and when you're not, particularly how hard it is to be in a relationship when you're hiding.

Because many of the people, particularly men, who conceal their sexual orientation are afraid to have a real relationship, it contributes further to the ignorance and stereotyping of people who then say that homosexual relationships are just about sex, not love. And it is easier to demonize people if you make them less than human by removing love and relationships from the equation.

I also totally support the Frank Rule, and the older I get, or maybe it is the more society changes, the more I think that it should be a broader rule. There are days when I think what Jake is doing with Reeke is in its own way as destructive as the closeted politician who votes against gay rights. This all has to do with the hard sell, and not the bearding light we got last spring.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Mike Rogers has outed so many closeted gay politicos, he's starting to make Capitol Hill look like Brokeback Mountain.

Rogers is a muckraking gay blogger who uses his insider's knowledge of Washington politics and broad blanket of contacts to "out" gay politicos — but only, he says, if they are undermining gay rights. Critics call his tactics divisive and politically motivated.

"For me what it's really about is if congressman X thinks that gay people shouldn't have equal rights but goes home and is having sex with men, and not disclosing that, then we have a problem." — Mike Rogers

"I feel more sad for [the people I out] than anger," Rogers says. "... That they are in this position, that they are self-loathing, willing to wake up everyday and go to work against the very community they are a member of is quite shocking."

  20. I like the Frank Rule. Privacy vs. Hypocrisy. Makes a lot of sense.

I watched Rendition last night. Must say, I did not like this movie. I could go on for 30 minutes about flaws in the script, casting, direction, performances, but I won't. Omar Metwally was great - too bad his performance got lost in the rest. I just never stopped seeing Jake, Reese, Alan, Meryl or Peter instead of their characters. The movie just did not engage me. I think the director was in a bit over his head.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Omar Metwally was great - too bad his performance got lost in the rest.

I liked Rendition very much M but I agree it was not a perfect movie. I found that one of its main flaws was the cardboard stereotyped American characters - Meryl Streep's in particular comes to mind. My own interest rose the minute the story left the U.S. I thought Yigal Naor was also extremely good.

I remember expecting a much more "political" movie - more in the line of Costa Gravas, although when one watches Hood's Tsotsi it's clear the man cherishes the human angle.

Nice avatar Destiny. So the crotch one is still available? ;)

BTW, the Frank rule also gets my (unfortunately Canadian) vote. :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Reese is too dull to be a lesbian.

    ReplyDelete
  27. broadwayfan, that is one of those totally gratuitous comments you like to post, I suppose. There are awfully dull lesbians out there and totally cool ethero, and the other way around too. Sexual orientation has nothing to do with that.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Um, sorry Destiny but I would hardly compare Jake to someone who denies laws for gays. He has continued to be gay supportive. He is not in some cult that does not believe in gayness. Why aren't you saying the same thing about Hayden C. or Zac Efron? It's pretty offensive to compare Jake to political hate mongers.

    ReplyDelete
  29. There are days when I think what Jake is doing with Reeke is in its own way as destructive as the closeted politician who votes against gay rights.

That is too harsh on Jake.
    I strongly disagree.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Having survived the less than ringing endorsement of my fashion sense, I return with another observation into the world of Reeke.

I've just been to see the Other Boleyn Girl (apologies if this is all beginning to sound like the diary of a provincial lady) and while watching it the thought came to me...

If Jake felt he had to beard, why didn't he ask Natalie Portman to help him out. I'm sure she'd have played along for a few months and it would have been so much more convincing and palatable. No wonder Reese was so sniffy when they met, it must be pretty galling to run into someone who is younger, more beautiful and with a more successful film current;y showing.

The film is pretty good by the way, if you like historical drama there's worse ways to spend a couple of hours.

    ReplyDelete
  31. "There are days when I think what Jake is doing with Reeke is in its own way as destructive as the closeted politician who votes against gay rights."

Destiny, for what it's worth, I agree with you.

    ReplyDelete
  32. "He has continued to be gay supportive. He is not in some cult that does not believe in gayness."

That somehow makes his subsequent bearding worse IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If Jake felt he had to beard, why didn't he ask Natalie Portman to help him out.

I don't think Reese is helping Jake out - Jake wouldn't treat her like he does if he asked her for a favor.

    ReplyDelete
  34. flf, there is no way to say that Jake's supposed bearding is worse or comparable to a hate mongering lawmaker. No way. Again, how come no one is saying that about all the other supposed bearding situations going on in HW? Jake may have his issues but come on I don't think he is as horrible as some of you make him out to be.

I agree, Rattler, it is way too harsh.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Destiny, for what it's worth, I agree with you.

I strongly disagree with you too, then.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Boring or dull, Reese is too much of a woman-hater to be a lesbian. She tends to see all women as competition so she has to be better and above every other female and she does it with whatever it takes including backstabbing. Btw the only females you will ever see her with [besides business associates, her mother and her poor sad sad little daughter] are ones she's hired for one reason or another. When they are together like at a restaurant, Reese is on one side of the table, the girls on the other, she distances herself. Reese leads the conversation and everyone agrees with her. (they have to, she's holding the purse strings) She can't treat other women as equals, she has to be the top dog. Soooo I don't see her as being any girl's friend IRL much less a lover. No fuckin way.

But it is funny that that rumor is going around because she's with Jake. It probly riles her to think that people would think she's, OMG, a lesbian.

Sorry to go off topic. You can tell I'm no fan of whatsherchin. And believe me, with good reason, more than I can evah say on an open blog, chat or email. TR knows where I'm coming from.

GREAT POST. I never got into all that stuff when it was going on because I hate politics and the whole thing was confusing. But after reading your Spotlight today I get it, on who's who and who came out and how and why. All those months of conflicting online news, newspaper stories and TV clips and all it took was a few clearcut well written paragraphs from your blog to understand it. THANK YOU. XXOO

    ReplyDelete
  37. Could it be that Jake is mentioned in regards to the Closet instead of all those others seeking false security in the Closet because this is a JAKE blog? That's a "Well, duh!" question there.

And, while I don't put Jake's cowardice on the same level as those who wish to demonize and marginalize our GLBT citizens through legislation, his continued hiding is also hurtful at a time when the US is in desperate need to see a successful, happy, committed, NORMAL gay couple that are proud of who and what they are.

    ReplyDelete
  38. By the by, what has Jake done here recently - or ever for that matter - that earned him the title of 'Gay communtiy helpmate?' Handing out a GLAAD award, one appearance in an HRC video, attending a bazillion Rufus concerts, picking up a seven figure paycheck for BBM, and guest hosting on SNL in a dress aren't really the qualifications needed for a GLBT advocate.

    ReplyDelete
  39. That is your POV, Wicked.
I will respectfully and strongly disagree - if you are specifically talking about Jake. Unless I have all the facts about his life laid out before me, I am NOT going to judge Jake. Or demonize him. Period.

    Amen.

    ReplyDelete
  45. If Jake felt he had to beard, why didn't he ask Natalie Portman to help him out.

I think Natalie respects her self enough to hold her personal life and especially her love life to a standard of truth. Nat has never been known to play PR games in business, whether it was an award on the line or to garner publicity for a film. And I doubt she would compromise herself for someone else's personal agenda either.

But really, I don't think Jake would ask her anyway. I don't think Jake would ask anyone to beard.

Greesy Reesy OTOH....IMO Reese was the one who had the 'let's let everyone think we're dating!' scheme and hatched the plan by way of feeding Jake doubts about himself, scheduling little trips here and there, inviting him to events like concerts that he would want to go to, basically just taking up a lot of his time. It wasn't some secret PR Dept like you all think. I think it was Reese, all Reese. But I think Jake has caught on, esp after this last week. No affection was lost between those two. Unless like I said before you want to count the anon kissy/really in love sightings. You know, the ones her assistants reported.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Reeke might seem like BS. But Jake is still only an actor with gay rumours - despite how compelling some of us want to believe those rumours.

I do think it's unfair to be pointing finger. I believe in science, not wishful thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Maybe I was overstating the case or not being as clear as I should have been. I think bearding is very destructive, and in HW it reinforces a whole system. I will agree that it doesn't have as wide as an impact as trying to take away people's rights. But when that happens in politics there are usually people on the other side of the aisle fighting against it; because that battle is going on, at the end of the day gay rights are going to win out. And every time a hypocrite gets caught it speeds along that process.

In contrast, as long as everyone goes along with the system in HW, nothing is ever going to change. I don't expect people to come out if they don't want to. But I am deeply offended by this hard sell of hetereosexuality as the only acceptable relationship. And someone who beards becomes part of the problem.

And I do think the fact that Jake was so supportive of gay rights before hand makes it worse.

    ReplyDelete
  48. bad seed.. although I half go along with your theory, Jake would have to be extremely dense to have just caught on this last week. I think we all realise that he's maybe not the brightest button in the box, but really, how dense can someone be.

    ReplyDelete
  49. LOL. I meant caught on as in not letting her run the show. This last week showed a new 'old Jake' this Jake wasn't a follow-along pussy like Napa Jake. And this one also showed that Chris was there along for the week so no way was it Jake & Reese romantic NYC getaway even tho the Jeesers will tag it that way.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think we all realise that he's maybe not the brightest button in the box, but really, how dense can someone be.

Just want to make it clear that you are not speaking on my behalf.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Jake is bearding for two reasons. He wants to be a successful HW screen actor/leading man. The other reason is $$$$$$. Millions of it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The uniqueness of a place like OMG is
everyone has a chance to express themselves.

Let's be really mindful of that before making statements for the group.

    ReplyDelete
  53. If that's the case - why is he doing such a lousy job?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Tom: It is highly possible that Mr. Austin Nichols may completely disagree with you. Do we know his side of the story?

    ReplyDelete
  55. And this one also showed that Chris was there along for the week so no way was it Jake & Reese romantic NYC getaway even tho the Jeesers will tag it that way."

Well, I don't know if he was there for the extended weekend but I'm not surprised he would hang out with Jake--that is his oldest and closest friend so I would expect that. But I do find the photos of Jake leaving with Chris followed by Reese looking MASSIVELY pissed off very...interesting. Trouble in paradise?

I do wonder if he visited little Matilda. That's the only thing that interests me about his trip to New York City last week.

  59. I think Reese and Jake are equal in having responsiblity for their current situation.

It seems that they are very much alike. They are ambitious, power players and really want to win the game.

That is one reason Reese and Ryan didn't work. He was mystified by Hollywood back when they got together and really thought he could play by his own rules and get by. He didn't want to win because he didn't see it as a game he was playing.

I came here initially to let you know what to expect for your Jake. I thought he was Ryan 2.0 and along for the ride. You know when you are confused and overwhellmed it is nice to have someone who seems to know it all drive for a while. I thought that was what Jake was doing, handing over the keys and following along while he figured himself out.

I'm not sure that is the case anymore. He is a life long Hollywood resident and the more I hear about him from friends who live year-round on MV and people who have dealt with him in the industry the more I think that Reese and Jake are just alike.

I'm still inclined to think that if he does piss Reese off he will pay for it but maybe not. It could be a fight between equals.

Is it as bad as a lawmaker who publicly condemns homosexuality and makes laws denying gay folks their rights while privately seeking out same-sex partners? No. But is it homophobic? You betcha.

Even though I love Jake and I'm ready to cut him some slack for various "good" reasons (protect a relationship, get work, protect Austin in whatever capacity), there is no denying that what he does contributes to paint a world where gays are almost nonexistent, let alone gays in a stable relationship. And as Destiny points out, contrary to homophobic political actions, HW's code of silence imposed on the gay actors it employs still has to be seriously challenged.

Meg wrote about "The Other Boleyn Girl":

Thanks for the tip Meg! My turn with a suggestion: La vie en rose. Netb saw it too recently and warmly recommended it. I had to watch it on DVD as we got some 30 cm of snow yesterday but even on the small screen I was just blown away by Marion Cotillard's performance. I don't doubt Jake is ambitious but does he have that type of coldness, that ruthless, I'll step on anyone to get what I want quality that Reese has? I don't know.

I still hope he visited his goddaughter when he was in NY but then who knows.

  67. Re the Reese may be a lesbian idea. That first appeared as a BI on ent lawyers site. Unlike Ted, he does actually reveal BI identities and a few days later he implied he would say more about it in July. He did not promise a reveal, but said look for something in July. He also said he was totally dumbfounded when he found out who it was.

As to Reese being the beard, we also heard that she was not the first asked. So I think it started off as being mutually beneficial. But Reese is obviously a strong, shrewd woman. Jake was a babe in the woods back then and I think he got way more than he bargained for. I do think he has finally realized that he now works for her, hence the growing coldness.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Jake is a product of the Hollywood system. PR is trying to buy him his own star on the HW walk of fame. But the whole photo ops thing with Reese seems like some dramatic PR stunt. Very distasteful and unfortunate.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I had heard a while back shortly after the Reese thing started that a lot of Hollywooders just saw them as pretentious and over-the-top.

Even Jake's mother thought it was a bit much (she didn't like the publicity one bit).

I also agree that bearding doesn't help the gay/lesbian/transexual community. However, I stop at accusing Jake, Hayden et al of adding to the problem because whilst I 'think' some of these guys are gay/bi, I don't 'know' it.

That said, even if I thought Jake was the straightest of the straights, I still wouldn't think his relationship with Reese is real because the two are too disrespectful of each other. They look like they are in a 20 year marriage that has turned sour.

As for Austin? I believe he was definitely once with Jake. Is he still? I'm not entirely convinced. Austin seems free lately. Free to be himself. I don't think he's ever been truly free whilst being the Grey Goose.
I think the person that brought out that wonderful sexiness in the last bunch of photos of Austin should be congratulated however. Whomever they are.

  75. Another interesting night at OMG.

I think maybe Austin feels free because of all this; I don't think he wants all the attention he gets to be because of his perceived connection to Jake.

I think Jake would have accomplished his own aims better had he stayed the ambiguous networker (with some good studio photo sessions thrown in - what's wrong with that for profile between movies?) If I had never had a thought about J&A I would still find J&R a strange, unlikely combination. I was always indifferent to Reese but I don't especially like the vibe I get since I've "known" more about her.

  76. AG,
I could not have expressed it as
well as you have. I agree 100%! I
will always think that J&A were
involved at one time. The only thing I can say is that if Jake is
with Reese, I wish them both well.
Look at the difference in the Lakers pictures. When Jake smiles,
it lights up his whole face. But
    times change and people change.
Who knows-the band type ring Austin is wearing could be a farewell present from Jake. It may
just signify some sort of thing to
be remembered by. That's just my
    idea.
I forgot to ask-Wicked and Special K-you do not have any rules about a disabled person like myself posting, do you?
    Have a good day.

  77. There are no rules like that, kacie :)

If someone gave me a farewell present like that I'd tell them to shove it. I like to think Austin would do the same :D

I laugh about how he runs out the door ahead of her, he puts her in a chokehold when he has his arm around her and even when they do hold hands its like a death grip. If that's how Jake is gonna treat her in their relationship (if its real) you gotta wonder how desperate Reese is. lol

  79. Austin's ring (the band one) could be from someone else, a new love.

  80. Yes, it might, and it might not. He looks happy enough lately, which is great.

The only rules about posting here are that people need to be respectful and use names. You always do that, so of course you should post!

Thanks for asking how I'm doing. I think I'm finally getting over this flu. I missed a week of work and still didn't feel or sound good last week. This thing really hangs on! Tink took good care of me when I was home.

    He's still wearing Big Blue.

  82. Glad you are feeling better Wicked.

Yes he is still wearing Big Blue which makes me wonder.

London, I did think about the possibility that Austin is feeling free because of the bearding. It would be nice for one nice thing to come out of that mess.

I guess I'm thinking that if Jaustin are still together then the contrast between the two men lately is even scarier.

  83. laughing I have to wonder how desperate Reese is to put up with this mess no matter what the circumstances.

I sure did. I made sure she was so delirious that she didn't notice she was feeding me three times as much and twice as often. Damn I wish she'd get sick more.
