Three from Ang Lee for Your Consideration

Here are the three movies to choose from for our first Movie Club. It seemed like so many people like Ang Lee that I thought we would start with one of his. As always, one computer, one vote! We will probably have our discussion in about a month or so, to allow everyone time to get and watch the film. Please let us know if any of these are a problem to get.

  1. I voted for the Wedding Banquet cos I've seen it already but I voted before I looked up the Ice Storm or Lust Caution to see what they're about. [I know, I should have looked first] Ice storm sounds good. I don't know if I'm ready to see L/C, it sounds like its political? Maybe not. Any of the 3 will be good.

  2. I'm going to pick Lust, Caution but any one of those would be fine as well.

  3. I have to share this story from the Washington Post about a two legged dog. She only has back legs and walks upright! She's touring right now to inspire and educate people about disabilities. You have to see the video of her walking!

  4. I would be remiss if I did not post this as well. Today, between 8-9 pm in your time zone, people are encouraged to turn their lights off to decrease our human footprint on the Earth.

  6. Happy Birthday stubborn, give yourself a good day!
All of the movies look good. I chose Ice Storm

  7. Hi all,

I chose Lust, Caution, but was torn between that and The Wedding Banquet, and I've always wanted to see The Ice Storm too. Really, any of them would be great. :)

Thanks for the info Wicked about Faith and Earth Hour. Gotta love that will to survive. :)

  8. I chose The Wedding Banquet for reasons I've already mentioned but I won't be disappointed if one of the other two wins either.

I saw The Ice Storm and it tackles enough interesting issues to make for lively chats. I didn't see Lust Caution but only came across positive reviews.

The nice thing about having three Ang Lee movies is that we'll most probably end up talking about the other two films also. ;)

Thanks for the reminder about Earth Hour Wicked. I had planned to watch Our of Africa for the first time tonight but what the heck, it's a cocooning Saturday for me anyway so I'll wait till 9:00 PM.

That two-legged dog sounds like a doll. I'll be checking her story for sure. :)

    Have a beautiful Saturday everybody!

  9. Happy Birthday Stubborn!

Thanks Wicked for the story about that dog, it really touched me, and I'm going to forward it to a lot of people.

    I voted for Wedding Banquet.

Still laughing over yesterday's posts, I keep focusing on new things. Right now it's the line about the pigs getting grandma.

In those last photos of Maggie I did wonder if Maggie was pregnant, but she didn't look that big. Hmmmm....

  10. [Maggie] Gyllenhaal is considering other screen roles in the coming weeks.

  11. Gyllenhaal had hoped to complete her portion in the ensemble cast within two weeks in Connecticut, playing star Robin Wright Penn's mother in several flashback sequences. But when the new scheduling stretched out her shoot over five weeks, she chose to stay with Peter Sarsgaard and their newborn as he films "An Education" in the U.K.

  12. Just a suggestion but maybe we should do all three of these films, one after the other, as our first films. Having them all be from the same director just adds an element of interest. Wedding Banquet was my choice, partly because I think it was one of Ang's very first films. We can see his progress as a director as well.

You really want to make people work, don't you, M? :) I like this idea, though.

Destiny, what amazed me was the way Faith got to her feet! When she was lying down, I couldn't figure out how she was going to do it. It is incredible how adaptable animals are!

  14. The Wedding Banquet for me please - it's the only one of the three I haven't seen yet :)

  15. I have seen the Wedding Banquet and Ice Storm (which was my first Ang movie), haven't seen Lust, Caution yet.

I like the idea of watching more than one of them for discussion.

One Ang movie that I do love(love love love)is Sense and Sensibility. His first foray into working with sheep, and never he wanted to work with sheep again. Luckily he changed his mind.

There are so many themes that run through Ang's movies, I can't wait to see what everyone brings to the discussion.

Still chilly here but a bright beautiful day in New England, I saw my first Robin, and it was a promise that spring (while already here on the calendar) is soon here.
    Spring awakening indeed.

  16. I was wondering that too Wicked, so I was glad they showed the dog getting up. The dog also looked pretty happy, which was nice, when I first started reading I was a bit afraid that the dog would look miserable.

  17. I voted for "Ice Storm". I've seen all three... but "Ice storm" was my favourite Ang Lee film before BBM came out. "lust, caution" is great too. Actually "Wedding Banquet" is not as good as Ang Lee's later films... but the subject matter is such an interesting one (it's more about cultural difference than about sexuality... or it's actually a cultural look at sexuality).

JFC on DVD.. now that's something to look forward to.

  18. ^^thanks for the Shelter link. Looks like a very good film.

  19. Hey everyone,

Man am I ever having a hard time deciding - too many good choices :)

That shelter movie looks really good. I'm hoping I can find it somewhere to rent.

Thanks Wicked for the "faith" video. Its great to recognize the bravery and heroism of animals as well as humans.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. I've got to admit I'm warming up to Jake's upcoming films: pretty excited about Brothers and am thinking if its a great script nailed may be much better than we expect. Lets hope the boy gets his confidence back and starts a new and happier phase in this life. Heck that goes for me too, maybe all of us ;)

    Best to all...

  20. An A-list actor who dates women but has a secret eye for men is going to be outed next week?? http://blogs.notw.co.uk/showbiz/2008/03/an-a-lister-sta.html

Has to be someone who's over 55 and no longer viable as a leading man. No way would a celeb mag get away with outing someone like Clooney or DiCaprio or even Jake--not as long as Hollywood can make money off of them.

    Spacey maybe?

  21. The very public, "private couple" continue their photo op in Cabo San Lucas. Pics at IHJ. 100 points for perseverance. Gotta keep those faces in the news lest they be forgotten. And if you can't do it through good movies and great acting, guess bearding is the next best?!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Looks like Jake got round to adjusting Austin's crutches.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Jake doesn't look like he's bearding in those pics, he looks like he's just there like a family friend. Again no chemistry between him and Reese, he has more going on with the guystanding behind him helping him with his backpack. Nothing like a holiday getaway on crutches walking thru airports, Jake looks kind of miserable trying to work with those awkward things. I think the Cabo trip pics were part of the setup for the Stop Loss weekend to show Ryan up, part of the US Weekly package. And what about giving the kids pets and taking them away from them after a few days? Bet the kids would have rather been with the pigs.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Stop Loss week, this is serious business.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You can bet Reese paid for the whole trip. No wonder Jake is going along with Reese, he's getting trips and publicity for free!

    ReplyDelete
  26. ....along with getting contacts in the industry, how-tos on business, lessons on getting an Oscar all in exhange for a little hugging and kissing for photo ops and some humiliation and loss of friends and distance from family. Yep everyone has their price.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I just hope that if Jake and Austin have broken off their relationship, they remain friends.

I also hope if Jake has chosen
Reese, that he does what makes him
    happy in his life.

I look forward to getting the
JFC DVD. I also wish Jake and Austin much success in their future careers. Does anyone know
for certain that Jake has been
signed for The Moon Project movie
or the Joe Namath movie? I am just
    curious is all.

Special K and Wicked, keep up the
    excellent work!
