Stop the Music

Why is there no music today? OMG wanted to recognize GLSEN's(Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) 12th Annual Day of Silence in our own way. We wanted people to still comment to each other but wanted to make a statement supporting the Day of Silence.

The Day of Silence is about safer schools, tolerance and positive change.

It is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT students and their allies.

In 1996, students at the University of Virginia organized the first Day of Silence in response to a class assignment on non-violent protests. Over 150 students participated in this inaugural DOS. In 1997, organizers took their effort nationally and nearly 100 colleges and universities participated. In 2001, GLSEN became the official organizational sponsor for the event.

This year's Day of Silence is dedicated to memory of 15 yr. Lawrence King,
California student who was shot and killed at school in February by a 14-year-old classmate because of King’s sexual orientation and gender expression.

GLSEN's 2005 survey found
that four out of five LGBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and 29% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety. The Day of Silence is one way students and their allies are making anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and name-calling unacceptable in America’s schools.

GLSEN, or the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, now in its twelfth year, is the leading national education organization addressing the serious problems of anti-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) name-calling, bullying and harassment that affect ALL students – LGBT and straight alike – in our nation’s schools. Established nationally in 1995, GLSEN envisions a world in which every child learns to respect and accept all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

  1. This is the story on Contactmusic.com

Closet chef JAKE GYLLENHAAL is developing a new organic restaurant venture with top cook CHRIS FISCHER.

Sources claim the movie star once promised himself he'd open a top-end eatery if his acting career took off by the time he was 30. He's 27.

And Gyllenhaal, who has made regular appearances on top chef Mario Batali's hit U.S. cookery show Molto Mario, is getting serious about cooking up a restaurant.

A pals tells America's Life + Style magazine that Gyllenhaal and pal Fischer are looking at real estate in Los Angeles - with a view to opening their own place.
The insider says, "Cooking is his (Gyllenhaal) big hobby and his passion."

Reports suggest Gyllenhaal is even planning a summer vacation cycling tour of food-lovers mecca Tuscany, Italy with his girlfriend Reese Witherspoon - to seek inspiration for his new restaurant.
He'll be the latest in a long line of Hollywood stars who have opened restaurants - Morgan Freeman, Sandra Bullock, Jeri Ryan, Ashton Kutcher and Tara Reid are just some of the celebrities who have tasted success as restaurateurs.

I hope this is the same source who gave us the scoop that Reeke was going to spend their Thanksgiving in Hawaii.

Restaurant idea always sounds great but I'm not sure how the real estate biz is everywhere else? but restaurants are dropping like flies around here. Everytime you turn around, one is closing. These are tough times right now for alot of eateries.

I've got to stop getting on here while I'm trying to get ready for work!! : )

It will be interesting to see if the cycling tour happens. Reese does not bike, AFAIK. She definitely would not be able to keep up with Jake.

  4. This bit from the NY Daily News is funny-

Jake Gyllenhaal wants to open a restaurant. One source says, "Cooking is his big hobby and his passion. It's nothing for him to whip up miso-marinated cod with braised microgreens." Note to self: don't go to Jake Gyllenhaal's restaurant.

  6. One student's experience with the Day of Silence

I love it that Jake and Chris are planning to open a restaurant and that it will be organic. I agree with Prairie Girl, though, the restaurant biz is really hard to make money in and just because you're a good cook does not mean you can make it in that business. I wish them the best!

  7. Heath Ledger's friend raises money in his memory

AfterElton.com reader Kevin of Seattle recently got in touch with me to tell about something called The Great Walk to Beijing, a twenty-one day walk across China that's a fundraiser organized by Olivia Newton-John to raise money for a cancer treatment center. One of those participating is Adam Sutton, best known as the friend of Heath Ledger.

After reading the script for Brokeback Mountain, Heath reportedly talked with Sutton about life as a closeted Aussie cowboy (Sutton is now out) and he even visited Heath while they shot the movie.

Kevin says he thinks the gay community can do a better job of supporting Adam and asked me to help spread the word. As for Adam, he says:

I hope to get a lot of support from the gay community because I want to represent the community as best I can. Also, I've decided to do the walk in my mate Heath Ledger’s honour and to donate the money I raise for the appeal in Heath's name. Anyone who was touched by Heath's life looking for a way to honour his memory, here is one small way to do it and I know he'd be rapt.

So if you'd like to help out Adam, get a page over on where you can sponsor Adam !

  8. I am so impressed with Larry King's PSA.

It is so great that Adam Sutton is doing the cancer walk in memory of Heath. I supported him.

  9. Tonight on 20/20 (news show on ABC in the US) has a feature on what would you do, creating situations and seeing how people will interact/react.

Tonight one of situations is public displays of affection, one of the situations is a gay couple and a lesbian couple and see if there is a difference in how people interact or react. They ran the experiment in both New York and in Birmingham Alabama.

  10. Jake and Chris opening a restaurant -- you don't know about the source of this one.

But Jake has talked about having a restaurant venture before.

A bike trip in Tuscany looking for little out of the way places that are making great food.

    Sounds like a dream trip.

    But who's dream trip?

  13. I think it is great that Larry King has gotten involved in this; he has a large audience and may be able to reach people that would ordinarily not pay attention to a PSA like this.

I often feel that it is kds who are on the frontline of the war for more social acceptance of any kind, and yet they are the most vulnearable too. Part of the problem is that when people get older they are less willing to take chances, even though they have more of a safety net. I could go on about Reeke here but I won't; it's all been said before.

  14. Oops, sorry, had to repost under my regular name, I posted under my alter ego without realizing: :)

Wonderful post today - I may go into music withdrawal tho.

Oh man, a biking trip to Tuscany? To discover inspiration for a restaurant of your own? A totally, totally, dream vacation. *Sigh* A Room with a View and food, and fine art and architecture too - pardon me while I break out into an aria (tomorrow of course!)I just wish someone else who bikes would go. *Another Sigh* Good luck on the restaurant venture guys - I've always had a feeling Jake and Chris would do this, from all I've read, but we'll see - it is for a magazine story.

  15. Somehow I can see a trio of bike riders enjoying this trip through Italy, funny not a blonde in the bunch.

  16. I can see Jake and Chris on a foodie bike trip. Jake and Reese, does not compute. She's not athletic, she has kids to think about and her voice over work.

Jake does not seem to be enjoying himself lately. He always said he would stop acting if it stopped being fun. He certainly can't bike through Italy and do a movie like POP at the same time so I guess he passed on the POP deal. Wonder about the Namath and Moon pics too. Maybe they've been shelved.

Just how serious is Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon's relationship?

"I just think he loves her," Gyllenhaal's producer pal Ryan Kavanaugh told PEOPLE at the 23rd Annual "Salute to Youth" dinner in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Kavanaugh produced the actor's upcoming film, Brothers, which he calls a "passion project."

"[Jake] has obviously had his fair share of dating," Kavanaugh says of Gyllenhaal's romantic life. "I think eventually you come to a place where you know what you want and seeing what we saw on the set, he was certainly completely devoted to her and really loves her."

Over the course of the film, the producer really got to know Gyllenhaal, 27. "He's awesome," says Kavanaugh. "He's a true artist and a really good guy. We used to workout every morning before going on the set so he became a good friend, too."

  22. People

Kind of a what the heck kind of article, it was kind of huh? where did this come from? and wha?

Is this something you say on to a reporter at a charity event? And there are stilted word phrases all through this little filler.

Did anyone find this sentence needed? "We used to workout every morning before going on the set so he became a good friend, too" Did we need to know this? Does this change the story in some way?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am confused by the People article - why are they writing about Jake's feelings when it's not from the horse's mouth? It seems like overkill. Could it be true?

  24. "I just think..."

Statement of opinion vs. Statement of fact.

  25. It's all PR bullshit for the movie, just like with Rendition, with the added bonus of keeping Reeke in the news when they don't have their usual Friday pictures. Also sounds like someone doing some serious name-dropping to get themeselves some publicity.

  26. "Jennifer Aniston was spotted out recently on a blind date with financier Ryan Kavanaugh. The actress’ recent dinner with the young and wealthy businessman at Los Angeles restaurant Il Sole was arranged by friends, who reportedly told her it would be a good business opportunity to go out on the date.

A source told Us Weekly magazine: “It was a test run just to get her out with someone. It was a business dinner. He’s extremely wealthy. He could definitely help Jen finance projects.” "

  27. I agree with Destiny that it's just more PR crap. This line gives it away "he was certainly completely devoted to her"

  28. This line gives it away "he was certainly completely devoted to her"

Yup that was one of the phrases that stuck out.

    ReplyDelete
  29. On a blind date with Jennifer hmmmm. Another closeted gay man in power????? Maybe Ryan made a pass at Jake and was told "sorry, I'm devoted to Reese now". Sounds as plausible as anything the tabloids are saying.

  30. Jake Gyllenhaal is supposedly opening up a restaurant. Click here for more details.

Needless to say, this will do nothing to dispel those maybe gaybe rumours.

Still… for some Jakey’s culinary interests illustrate yet again that he’s not a typical Hollywood party punk. That he likes staying at home with Reese Witherspoon and her kids. That he will cook and clean and walk the dog and NOT stay out til all hours of the night with his boys and walk around at the beach in beater tanks with his carb face hanging out. More importantly, Jakey isn’t a cheater, unlike that cheese dick she used to be married to.

Call me Cruise, even though they certainly do pimp out their love when it helps to sell a movie, but in the case of Jake and Reese… I totally believe. Call me Cruise…

Why should we believe this "article" - "Sources" and "pals" again.....The restaurant rumour is old. Although I believe Jake would probably do it to support Chris and because cooking is one of his passions.

An by the way, many people believe he is bearding Reese for career reasons - whats the purpose if he quits acting....

  35. Just how serious is Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon's relationship?

"I just think he loves her,"

The publicity from this fauxmance really could help promote Brothers.

Gyllenhaal's producer pal Ryan Kavanaugh told PEOPLE at the 23rd Annual "Salute to Youth" dinner in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Kavanaugh produced the actor's upcoming film, Brothers, which he calls a "passion project."

"[Jake] has obviously had his fair share of dating,"

Jake Gyllenhaal is the epitome of virile, and straight (very straight), manhood.

Kavanaugh says of Gyllenhaal's romantic life. "I think eventually you come to a place where you know what you want and seeing what we saw on the set, he was certainly completely devoted to her and really loves her."

Jake and Reese are not a fauxmance. They are an incredibly real couple and very, very, serious. Hopefully they will marry on Brothers' opening weekend.

Over the course of the film, the producer really got to know Gyllenhaal, 27. "He's awesome," says Kavanaugh. "He's a true artist and a really good guy. We used to workout every morning before going on the set so he became a good friend, too."

Jake and I are so close. I am really connected in Hollywood. You wouldn't believe how many powerful HW movers and shakers are my BEST friends!

  39. I spent over an hour last Spring writing about the Tuscany bike tour Jake and Austin would love. If Jake takes her on that that tour i will be broken hearted. absolutely broken hearted.

  40. I think it's unlikely, tom.

What the translator said. So tired, so cliched.

    ReplyDelete
  41. So tired and cliched is right. The Reeke Summer Of Love - so classy, so cosmopolitan, so perfect for the foodie Jake and businesswoman with a heart Reese. I can already envision the 71 images in the mother of all photo-ops, both astride expensive bicycles while Chris and Austin linger blurrily in the background. Oops, what? ;)

I know the restaurant dream venture between Chris and Jake has crept up a few times but it'd be fun to see it come to fruition. I like the idea of it being organic, too. It's just too bad Jake can't do this without all the bs pr fauxmance. Let this be Jake's independent venture with the input and knowledge of his business partner and the presence of his man to enjoy the holiday escape with.

I was laughing at that Jennifer Aniston news item. Coupled with the Reeke one it's amusing to see the publicity suddenly become a three-fer - Reeke, Jennifer and, uh, Ryan, lol. *rolls eyes*

A very sobering, heartrending post today. It really does begin with educating children and a hope that the messages stay with them. I think equality and respect is ready to grow in every child, but it's simply a matter of whether it's nurtured or manipulated.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Maggie said in Interview that she'd like to work with actresses like Kate Winslet and Michelle Williams. Not Reese.

    ReplyDelete
  43. So Jake really loves Reese. Not just loves her but REALLY does. That is a very important message that has to come out!
"People magazine"...i always look forward to read their headlines on the net. Always makes me smile, and i mean that.
They are so nice to everyone and everyone is always so good looking or behaving so good or saying the right thing. Hilarious:D
Was it last week or the week before that when they had Reese in "caught in the act", where she was running with a friend, laughing, and looking so good (without make-up, of course).
Yes, i love reading those headlines. As long as it makes me laugh, like Donald Duck or something else that i know is not for sure but still fun:)

By the way, i hope cynthia and Christine really are getting married. They look so cute together i think, and they seem so genuinely happy together, at least at the photos we see. And, happy birthday, Austin...for yesterday.

  44. The thing that stood out for me in the People article was the reference to Jake having dated a lot, since we know that is totally not the case. So the producer can't know much about him after all.

I only just started surfing for the evening but visited ONTD, which also mentioned the People article. 53 comments, almost every one about his being gay or a variation of it. Sometimes I think PR puts these articles out to test the waters. The sentiment is still "he's gay".

Re The Informers, I thought I read somewhere that they cut Brad Renfro's scenes out.

    ReplyDelete
  45. What an awesome and an important post today. I love that people are taking steps to stop the harrassment that gay and lesbian students go through everyday. I have been there and I am sure others of us have also.

Thanks Lance Bass. Thanks Larry King. Most of all thanks OMG.

    ReplyDelete
  46. How does this producer know that Jake is so devoted to reese. "It was so obvious on the set" I dont remember reading that she was ever on the set. I think PR would have been all over that one.

    ReplyDelete
  47. of course you're devoted and love your frinds! I love OMG, Spesh, Wicked, chocolate, my pets.

btw 'love' & 'devoted' are overused, anyone say divorice? lol

your post today, the sounds of silence..

the Tuscan trip is bs, its hot and touristy in that time of year. another turkey/hawaii pr fantasy story put out to keep the reeke in the news heap.

    im getting tired of jake..

  48. The bad seed, you know tabloids can make up trips like the bike one. Not all of that is from PR. You don't have to get plugged into the crap "stories" and you won't get tired. Jake isn't responsible for all of it.
