Out Spotlight XXXIV
Truly distinctive, original and even idiosyncratic talents in British film Derek Jarman was not only a pioneer in queer cinema, he is considered the founding father of what came to be known as the New Queer Cinema, a loose grouping of filmmakers — among them Todd Hayne “Poison", Tom Kalin "Swoon”, and Isacc Julien, “Looking for Langston” — who emerged in the late ’80s. A new documentary by Julien screened this past Sundance Film Festival is a tribute the life and work of Jarman.
Derek Jarman born in England in 1960, Jarman trained as a painter before turning to movie making, amassing a reputation as one of Britain's most controversial filmmakers. He appreciated the communal approach to filmaking. Tilda Swinton, who worked with Jarman, and is executive producer of the documentary said, “I think he made films primarily for the company,” “Working with him was to work alongside him.”
Jarman saw himself as a queer artist following in the footsteps of Jean Cocteau and Pier Paolo Pasolini, and like his forebears, was an inveterate polymath - a notable painter, set-designer, writer, gardener and political activist - who nevertheless remains best remembered for his films.
He made his debut in "overground" narrative filmmaking with the groundbreaking Sebastiane (1976), arguably the first British film to feature positive images of gay sexuality, and the first film entirely in Latin. The story of life the life of Saint Sebastian. He followed up with his second film, Jubilee (1978), like its predecessor, was a success de scandal. Commonly credited as “Britain's first official punk movie”, it was also Jarman's first “Renaissance” film. It begins with the mystic John Dee summoning an angel to show Queen Elizabeth I the England of her namesake, Elizabeth II, which has been reduced to a near apocalyptic state of anarchy. However, there is little actual interaction between the past and present in the film, and the Renaissance sequences provide a framing device which serves to juxtapose this “golden age” with the decaying state of modern Britain. Including The Tempest, Caravaggio, Waiting for Waiting for Godot, The Angelic Conversation, and Edward II. His film War Requiem was brought Sir Laurence Olivier out of retirement and it was the last film appearance by the film legend. In public and in films like “The Last of England”(1988), he railed against what he saw as the ruinous greed and soullessness of Britain in the ’80s. His last work was Blue At the time when he made the film Blue, he was blind and dying of AIDS-related complications. Blue consists of a single shot of saturated blue colour filling the screen, as background to a soundtrack composed by Simon Fisher Turner featuring original music by Coil and other artists, where Jarman describes his life and vision. When it was shown on British television, Channel 4 carried the image whilst the soundtrack was broadcast simultaneously on BBC Radio 3, a collaborative project unique for its time.
His final testament as a film-maker was the film Glitterbug made for the Arena slot on BBC Two, and broadcast shortly after Jarman's death. Compiled and edited from many hours of super 8 footage shot with friends and companions throughout his career it is a moving collage of memories, people and moments lost in time, accompanied by a specially commissioned soundtrack from Brian Eno.
On December 22, he was diagnosed HIV positive, and was notable for later discussing his condition in public. He passed away in 1994 from complications of AIDS.
While his work is as not as well known in the United State, much have his work has been seen by millions in the music videos he did for such performers as the Sex Pistols, Annie Lennox, Marianne Faithful, Pet Shop Boys, The Smiths, Brian Ferry and even Wang Chung.
These names: gay, queer, homosexual are limiting. I would love to finish with them. We're going to have to decide which terms to use and where we use them. For me to use the word ''queer'' is a liberation; it was a word that frightened me, but no longer.
“All men are homosexual, some turn straight. It must be very odd to be a straight man because your sexuality is hopelessly defensive. It's like an ideal of racial purity.”
Annie Lennox tribute to Jarman for the Red Hot & Blue, AIDS fundraising album. It includes home movies shot by Jarman's father. Lennox also sang this in his movie Edward II.
This song is from one of my all-time favorite albums!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhile I have a lot of admiration for someone like Jarman, I have to admit I've always been afraid to see any of his movie, I have a feeling I would not like them. The same goes for the other directors he's compared to, like Passolini.
ReplyDeleteInteresting quote about all men being homosexual. I'm not even sure what he means about being straight is defensive. I don't believe it, and I suspect even he didn't believe it; sounds like maybe he said it just to get people thinking about sexuality.
Great Spotlight. Im intrigued by his statement that all men are homosexual. Seems a pretty strange thing to say. I dont think most gay people think that way. I wonder if he actually felt that or it was just wishful thinking on his part. I do feel that some people suppress thier homosexual feelings and other embrace them. Maybe thats what he was saying in a roundabout way??
ReplyDeleteMy, does that Spotlight bring back great memories!
ReplyDeleteI remember Nighthawks vividly. Saw it in the mid-80s and I thought it was pretty daring. To me it felt more like a documentary than a fictional story (the main character seemed a bit detached). I can still see the last scene of the movie with that closeted man in a bar, his eyes quickly scanning left and right to find another guy for the night.
The Red Hot & Blue CD is one of my favorites. Annie Lennox's Every Time We Say Goodbye is just irresistible. Just love, love, love it!
I agree with MF's fan above. Broken English is a wonderful album too. When I first got it as a LP I couldn't stop listening to that tune as well as to the Ballad of Lucy Jordan, Working Class Hero and Why'd Ya Do it. :D
Destiny, I took that quote to refer to the way straight men defend their heterosexuality. He's comparing the defensiveness and importance placed on being 100% straight to similar past ideas of racial purity where being 100% white or aryan was important to defend. I think when people feel they need to protect Jake's heterosexual purity they are responding to this cultural way of thinking (or protecting Jake against this bias). It reminds of the way women were thought to be impure if they weren't virgins. Now for men it is their straight "honour" they must guard. Just my thoughts and interpretation, I could be completely wrong.
ReplyDeleteThe same goes for the other directors he's compared to, like Passolini.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a few Passolinis, both on TV and the big screen. But I've avoided some that were once regularly showing and lauded by every critic in sight, like Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma, now that's one that has always totally freaked me out.
I never had such strong negative reactions towards Jarman's work but today's Spotlight makes me realize there's an awful lot of interesting stuff from that guy I've never seen.
Great Spotlight. Im intrigued by his statement that all men are homosexual.
I noticed that too Clarity. Felt as if he was trying to say that he really wasn't minority, that he was like everyone else, or that everyone else was just like him.
The kids are gone! The kids are gone! Did you notice? ;D
I think that's probably a good interpretation Orchid.I do think straight men are more likely than other grounds to fear the "other" --be it women, homosexuals or people of other races.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back frenchy, I'm glad the kids are gone. :D
Spent yesterday with Tom and the Mrs. @ TDK, then dinner, and watching Torchwood. TDK absolutely, positively lives up to the hype. See it!
ReplyDeleteIf were a Gyllenhaal family member, particularly if I were Stephen, I would be very concerned about what and how much Cantara posts online about my family. I would also be very concerned about her interest in Jake's fandom.
Love both Marianne Faithful and Annie Lennox, so I am musically happy today. :)
"The Dark Knight" lived up to all the hype. This was my first batman movie ever. The movie was terriffic. Heath was amazing. AMAZING. No doubt he will receive an Oscar nomination for his role. I cant say he will win yet because most of the best roles have not come out yet and usually don't till Fall. But in my opinion it is gonna be hard to beat Heath's performance. I would hate to be the next actor who protrays the Joker. It will be nearly impossible to top Heath's performance.
ReplyDeleteHeath is now an icon.
I cant say he will win yet because most of the best roles have not come out yet and usually don't till Fall.
ReplyDeleteTom, I also read that the only dead actor who got an Oscar was Peter Firth for Network. Apparently the Academy is reluctant to reward the deceased.
(...) and watching Torchwood.
Each time I read about Torchwood it's either a love or hate declaration. Personally I'm in the love camp. ;) Now if beautiful Cheyenne Jackson got a series like that, I'd be in seventh heaven!
Has anybody watched Dr. Horrible? I just finished watching it again and started to think how great it would be if we got regular comedic or dramatic stuff like that online.
No need to wait for a big expensive movie or a series that never materializes and more chances for less-known actors to show what they're really capable of.
A pictorial definition of the word "privilege"
ReplyDeleteDestiny, I think it must be quite stressful for straight men to keep up this charade of superiority, hence the defence I guess.
ReplyDeleteI also saw TDK and loved it (not sure if I've already written a review here). Heath definitely deserves every award out there, and I'd enjoy seeing him get an Oscar not only because he deserves it for his portrayal of the Joker, but also that he should have won for Ennis as well. I hope wherever heath is now he is enjoying the love and respect this role is bringing him. Its also nice the world is waking up to what a magnificent actor/person Heath is.
Cantara is nuts and if SG is with her in any way he must be too. I wouldn't blame Jake for keeping his distance.
Trust, Cantara IS a source for the Babblers.
ReplyDeleteSo does that make Cantara another one of those people who thinks that if she pushes the JIS agenda Jake will give her his undying friendship and love? Sounds like it to me. Who knows what is up with her and SG, but I'm willing to bet Jake has nothing to do with her.
ReplyDeleteAll this Oscar talk about Heath is reopening old wounds. I'm glad Heath always said he didn't care about that stuff.

ReplyDeleteI too have a strong feeling that Jake has absolutely nothing to do with CCC (aka Crazy Cantara Christopher).
And as far as Papa G's concern, Jake once said in an interview that the Gyllenhaals loved to talk but were not very good at communicating feelings. Maybe SG considers CCC's public outpouring therapeutic or a nice complement to his own therapy that doesn't cost him $300 a pop. :D :D :D
P.S. Seems to me I haven't been writing such a bad-behavior post in a long time. I too find it "therapeutic", ha!
He's really cute.
ReplyDeleteEating
Not so sure Cantara is pushing Reeke. She is either mocking Jake for wanting to recreate his own childhood or is actually blaming Mrs. Gyllenhaal for the creation of Reeke itself.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt Jake is a Momma's boy. Remembering the press conference where Jake first addressed questions about Reese. Momma was there. Momma was watching and listening.
ReplyDeletePress conference? Which press conference are you talking about? And nothing wrong with loving your momma. I'd be more attracted to a man who did than one who holds his mother in contempt.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt Jake is a Momma's boy.
ReplyDeleteMost men are momma's boys.
There are 100's of male movie stars who leave their mothers at home. The ones with the mothers always at their side should be avoided.
ReplyDeleteAgreed there is nothing wrong with being a Mommas boy. But some men have stronger willed Mommas than others. I think Jake's Mom has a huge influence over the decisions that Jake makes.
ReplyDeleteI was refering to the press conference during rendition promotion when Jake stated that Reese had an amazing ability to grow a beard. It was mentioned that Momma was standing close by holding her baby Grand Daughter.
I wonder who is really in charge of the romance. Is it Reese? It is Evelyn? It is Momma?
You said that very well cameron. My boyfriend,s mom wouldn't even let me into a screening of his lastest movie. I was surely pissed.
ReplyDeleteI knew very little about Jarman before doing this Spotlight. A true artist with a message that he wanted to share.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to include that quote because it is provocative.
It was mentioned that Momma was standing close by holding her baby Grand Daughter.
ReplyDeleteLink please.
It there :-). If your interested I am sure you can find it. Momma was lurking.
ReplyDeleteWhat was left out of that news conference was that when asked if he would talk about Reese, he said no. Then he said that there were rumors that he was datng a number of people, including members of the same sex. One of the reporters said that he noticed that he and Peter was sporting facial hair, Jake then said that he grew his beard because Peter grew a goatee, then he said that he was dating Peter. He then urged the reporters to start the rumor that he was dating Peter and everyone burst out laughing. Then he mentioned that Reese was a great actress and she could grow a mean beard too.
ReplyDeleteIt was the LA news conf. at the end of Sept. and they mentioned that his Mother was lurking.
I mention his comments because I noticed that was the only quote that is repeated when in fact there was a lot more that lead up to it. I'm sure if you check IHJ or google you can find it.
Interesting theories: try this one on for size
ReplyDeleteNaomi is supportive of Jake's relationship with the lil goyishe mama from Tennessee because R is not a threat to N's own relationship with her gorgeous boy.
Jake's mother attended LA Rendition press conference and you conclude that she rules Jake's life?
ReplyDeleteAre you serious?
LOS ANGELES, California—Perhaps Jake Gyllenhaal was just in a joking mood. Or maybe, because his mom, scriptwriter Naomi Foner, was around, he wanted to keep the press con light.
Jake Gyllenhaal takes rumors in stride
I always assumed that interview took place over the telephone especially since I never read of any other Rendition press conferences taking place on a Sunday morning around that time and since the publication is from the Philippines. And if so, the mention of Naomi being around makes more sense.
ReplyDeleteBut I see no mention of Naomi holding her granddaughter in that.
Thanks for the link, i obviously remembered parts and not in proper order but the Reese/beard comment came from him talking about Peter and their facial hair, then he is asked about the best qualities in Reese and that's when he says she grows a mean beard and then says she is one of the best actresses around, blah, blah.
ReplyDeleteHe refuses to answer if he is dating Reese and at the end he jokingly tells the reporter to spread the rumor that he is dating Peter.
There is a mention of Naomi but no Ramona.
:) here's the Rendition conference link Reese of the Multiple Names is talking about:

I knew very little about Jarman before doing this Spotlight. A true artist with a message that he wanted to share.
ITA Special. He may not be the easiest to love but is certainly worth a detour. :)
But talking about out artists, I almost forgot to talk about a rather unexpected statement I heard yesterday.
My niece made me listen to Sam Sparro. She loves the guy, thinks he's totally-really-just-over-the-top-cute and constantly listens to his music. But the best thing is that she called him "another really cute guy who's out of the closet" and added that she really didn't care if he was straight or gay. He was great looking and made great music so everything's fine with her. By the way, she also loves Mika, thinks he's gay too and doesn't care.
Given her "Christian" i.e. homosexuality is a sin and Satan's work background, those words sounded like music to my gay-friendly ears.
She's home-schooled (to avoid the "World's bad influence") but apparently something, somewhat, somehow, is getting to her that's making her much more accepting that I ever thought she'd be.
Now I just hope this isn't just a teenage passing fancy but the first signs or real acceptance.
By the way, if you could add that Sparro kid to our list...
Oups, sorry for reposting the link. Huh? was quicker than me. :)
ReplyDeleteIf anyone thinks that Jakes mentioning Reese and beard in the same sentence has nothing to do with what was about to come is kidding themselves.
ReplyDeleteHi all,
ReplyDeleteJust got back from TDK. Whew! What a ride. There are just no words for Heath's performance, I couldn't take my eyes off him for a second. Then again, everyone is wonderful in it. I was a little nervous about it, but there's no need, he just sweeps you up in his character. I am having a little bit of mixed feelings now. :)
Another fascinating Out Spotlight today - I wasn't familiar with Derek Jarman, except for most likely the music videos. I'll read this a little more thoroughly once my mind is capable of coherent thought - we were just blown away by The Dark Knight. I kinda lost my heart to Aaron Eckhart's character too. Love today's song by Marianne Faithful, and Red, Hot & Blue has always been a favorite of mine. :)
Austin Nichols sighting, that Austin Nichols is as cute as our guy. And he flies!
ReplyDeleteDestiny isnt he! long legs, big eyes & classicly dressed in brown retro. waiting for his dinner with mystery person whos wearing *cough* crocs.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I missed all that. I'll have to go back and take another gander.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Jake is reading everything about TDK and wondering if he still has a piece of his soul that he didn't sell to Reese that he could sell to the Devil to have POP get 1/4 of the interest and money that TDK is getting. I love Jake, but unfortunately, he's not the actor that Heath is. TDK may get Heath an Oscar (of which Jake is part of the voting Academy) and Jake must hope he'll be taken seriously after POP.
ReplyDeleteLOL, Austin Nichols Sighting! Just when you thought Austin Nichols couldn't get any cuter, someone proves you wrong. Good catch on the crocs. :)
ReplyDeleteaustin nekkid on the floor being handfed by someone wearing jeans and crocs..might be closer to the truth than we know. heh.
ReplyDeleteaustin nekkid on the floor being handfed by someone wearing jeans and crocs..might be closer to the truth than we know. heh.
ReplyDeletecloser to the truth than Jake doing anything with Reese
Not much to say today. After the high of seeing TDK and Heath's marvelous performance, I find myself incredibly sad that he is gone. Been down all day.
ReplyDeleteNot much to say today. After the high of seeing TDK and Heath's marvelous performance, I find myself incredibly sad that he is gone. Been down all day.
ReplyDeleteHere's honey (((m))).
Actually I'm a little bit worried about how I'll feel when I'll finally see TDK (this coming Friday if all goes well). I remember when we were squeeing and chasing the initial unofficial trailers that kept coming up and down online. We were already mesmerized by Heath's performance.
I take solace in the fact that his Joker is already lauded as a classic.
Have a very good night everybody. :)
I went into the supermarket today and I saw TONS on OK magazines sitting on the shelves. Didn't someone from OK say that they would just BLOW off the shelves since this is the summer of love? I guess they were wrong. TDK has stole the show : )
ReplyDeleteIm happy for Heath...the whole cast really.
Someone posted that the copy for OK was already written and they were just waiting for the pics. I just had to see that for myself. They were absolutely correct. I dont even want to think about the implications of that because it just hurts too much.
Cute little Austin Nichols. He's flying now. Good for him.

ReplyDeleteNothing in Teds today about Toothy.
ReplyDeleteI always liked Derek Jarman though to my shame I probably know more about his garden than his films.
ReplyDeleteSince people are being precise :) Jarman was born 1942 and Peter Finch was the star of Network.
*THANKS* for the Austin sighting :D
Oooh anon - anon, here? It's Morocco not Morrocco.
ReplyDelete"TDK may get Heath an Oscar (of which Jake is part of the voting Academy) and Jake must hope he'll be taken seriously after POP."
ReplyDeleteWhy do some Heath fans always feel the need while praising Heath to dissing Jake. I don´t get it....
Since regular shootings for PoP have not yet started, perhaps we could wait with the joking, mocking and bashing until the first stills, trailers will surface.
anon take your own "Learn to spell" advice. it's not havent't in case you haven't noticed.
