Out Spotlight XXXVI

"Of the 10,708 athletes who will march into Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Olympic stadium on Friday, Outsports is aware of only 10 who are publicly gay, on par with the 2004 Games. There is also a bisexual American softball player.

Of the 10 publicly gay Olympians this year, only one is a man: Matthew Mitcham (Australia, diving). The out lesbians are: Judith Arndt (Germany, cycling), Imke Duplitzer (Germany, fencing), Gro Hammerseng and Katja Nyberg (Norway, handball and a lesbian couple), Natasha Kai (U.S., soccer), Lauren Lappin (U.S., softball); Victoria "Vickan" Svensson (Sweden, soccer); Rennae Stubbs (Australia, tennis) and Linda Bresonik (Germany, soccer)."
(From Outsports.com)

Former Olympian Robert Dover,(USA Equestrian team), who is out, told the Associated Press back during Sydney there are scores more not ready to be open. "You spend a day with these athletes, and it becomes obvious that gay people are everywhere," Dover said. "The reason many of them aren't out is because they're focused on their job during this time when sports is the No. 1 thing in their lives."

"Simple math and common sense will tell you that many more gay or lesbian athletes will be competing. If 10% of the athletes are gay, that’s 1,000 people. Too high? Try 5%, which leaves 500. Still too high? OK, 1% still leaves 100. And even one-half of 1% still means there are 50 gay or lesbian athletes. Imagine the public attention if 50 athletes held a press conference to declare their homosexuality." (Outsports.com)

A pair of names looked familiar and remembered Norwegian Girl alerting us to the hardball players and lesbian couple, Gro Hammerseng and Katja Nyberg from Norway a while ago.

Gro Hammerseng was born April 10, 1980 in Gjøvik)she is currently the captain of the Norway women’s national handball team, and plays club handball for Danish club Ikast-Bording. Making her national team debut in 2000 she led Norway to two consecutive victories in the European Women’s Handball Championship, in 2004 and 2006, being voted the tournament’s most valuable player both times.

In the lead-up to the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Hammerseng has joined other Norwegian athletes in an Amnesty International campaign for human rights in the People’s Republic of China.

Katja Nyberg was born August 24, 1979 in Stockholm, Sweden, grew up in Finland and became a naturalized Norwegian citizen. She playes for Danish club Ikast-Bording as well as the Norwegian women's national handball team along with her partner Gro.

Nyberg is the daughter of Robert Nyberg, the first Finnish handball player to play professionally abroad. She was voted Most Valuable Player in the 2007 World Women's Handball Championship, where Norway won the silver medal.

Katja shared her success with her partner Gro twice playing in the Norwegian winning team in 2004 and 2006 European Championships.

They are both competing in the hardball for Norway in the Olympics.

OMG Olympic Moment

Basketball
Basketball is played in 4 periods of 10 minutes each at the Olympic Games. Five-minute overtimes follow if a game is tied. Both the Men's and the Women’s basketball tournament is played with 12 teams, except the host country and the reigning World Champion all teams have to qualify through a continental championship a year in advance to the Olympics. A three-point line, or arc, around the hoop allows three points for baskets from beyond 6.25 metres and two points from inside that distance.

How could OMG not love a game that uses words, traveling, pick ups, shirts vs. skins and man to man coverage? Leaving the rest of basketball fun for the OMG'ers to comment on.

With his height and build many assumed Austin for a basketball player but he admits himself he's got no game, and he lied and said he could play for his role in Glory Road. But training camp molded him into a basketball player.

Jake shows no hesitation in his love of basketball, more as an unabashed Laker's fan as well as pick up game player. As much as they like to play. OMG prefers them as fans.

  1. Great OutSpotlight, as usual, and I am enjoying the Olympics immensely! Enjoying the US vs. China basketball game right now with Yao Ming, and the swimming, diving, and gymnastics, and everything! Thanks also for one of my favorite songs ever! And love the pic of our guys. :')

  2. Wow, when you look at the numbers it is shocking how few are out. The sports world is just as bad as HW.

Gro and her gf are a very cute couple. I wonder if they find it hard competing in the same sport.

  3. Anybody see this in the comments for Ted's BV?
Tobey Maguire's boyfriend is supposed to be his wife's....wait for it....his wife's father.

  4. Interesting to hear that Rennae Stubbs is gay. Rennae was Steffi's best friend when she was playing tennis. They spent a lot of time together. I always thought that they might be a couple. I know that Steffi is married to Andre and has two children but always thought she may be bi or gay.

  5. Only one man, and nine women. Wow. That makes me even more impressed with Matt Mitcham. The pressure for male Olympic athletes to stay in the closet must be astronomical.

Is it just me, or is that link to the clip of Gro and Katja not working?

  6. Fixed the link for Gro and Katja. Thanks for the heads up Wicked.

  7. I never get tired of any of the Laker 1 pics. Never. Jake looks so happy in them. Glowingly happy. I'd love to see him look like that again.

Guess I never noticed the comments feature on Ted before. I saw the email option, but that's it. Moot point now. As a rule I only read comments on OMG and WFT2, unless something of interest prompts talk about Jake on other sites.

It's more acceptable for women to be open about being gay than men, even in sports. But I think there are way more gay actors in HW, than actresses. Just a feeling.

  8. I quess the pressure on male athletes are just as strong as HW leading men. It may be even tougher for atheletes since they have to be in the a locker room atmosphere where the issue would have to be very uncomfortable.
Plus there is the issue of endorsements. Gay athletes arent going to get any.

NBA star and outspoken Charles Barkley did make a statement after Ameche came out that he was aware of 5-6 players in the NBA who were gay when he played.

  9. I think Roger Dover's quote about athletes not being out because they are so focus on their job during the time when their sport is No.1 is interesting. In a way it parallels a Hollywood career. Years of work to reach their goals, then boom everything happens all at once what the world sees a instant but they know has taken years of dedication and drive. And how it can be short lived or can be carefully managed into a longer career.

And looking at by the numbers it's as disproportionate as it's in Hollywood.

  10. Thanks Another Vid!

I also thought of HW when I read that quote, but I have a different take on it, it's just another way of saying someone can't be out because it might ruin their career, which does of course tie in to doing all that work, and the fear, real or not, that being out will make it all for naught.

  11. It is time for people to step up and take a chance. Whether HW or the world of Pro Sports people need to have the courage to change things. Closets are a great place for clothes. Not people.

  12. Katja Nyberg was born in Sweden, grew up in Finland and became a naturalized Norwegian citizen.

    LOL! A true Scandi!!

Gro & Katja make a goodlooking couple but I agree with Destiny, I wonder if its hard competing in the same sport & team. Esp if they live together. Not sure if I couold eat, breath, talk, sleep, work & play with the same person allday long.good for them if they can!

Coming out - Methinks Dover is saying sports is #1 at that point and sexuality isn't important an issue. Understand completely. They are consumed by their athletic passion which physically only lasts a short time while sex is lifelong. For right now, they got to concentrate on today.

  14. Sorry to be a Sunday night statistics bore.. but, i was interested to see whether the Jake and Reese get engaged story from last week upped their game so to speak.

Checking my favourite source of web activity 'google trends' it would seem that it had very little impact - sort of confirming my hope that no-one is stupid enough to buy this story and even those that are are not interested in it to actual look for details of it.

    exhibit

its also interesting to see whether the timing of last weekends little news flurry had any impact on other celeb stories. Sadly again it would seem that it didn't.

    exhibit 2

so much for being the hottest couple in Hollywood.

  15. Wow! TDK is the box office #1 for the 4th straight week. It is now the #3 box office hit of all time. 500 million and #2 is right around the corner.

I now think TDK has a shot at a Best Picture nod. A Best Picture nod along with a Besting Acting nod(most likely supporting) for Heath will shoot Oscar ratings up to where they have not been in long time. HW cannot possibly pass up on this opportunity. MONEY....

  16. New pix of Ms. Pieces with Ava on x17. No Jakey.

  17. Jake is in Morocco filming, why would he be in L.A. shopping with Reese and Ava. The man is working.

  18. Ok "Brothers" has gotten a little bit of buzz. Looks like decent reviews for the movie, Jake(lead), Tobey(supporting), Sheridan(director). All 4 are projected as outside shots of oscar noms. 15th to 20th range according to And the Winner is.blog.com. Good news for Jake.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Great news Tom. Thanks for letting us know!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Jake actually got the highest rating for the movie at 16th for Best Actor. Again not bad news. Probably why there was some hugs at that showing. Also was maybe why Reese was pissed off. If she actually got in:-)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hopefully, with Jake being away all this time and Reese consistingly being shot out & about alone & with Ava, that Reeke can begin to use this as the excuse for the breakup. You know, to much time apart, rebound guy. I'm sure that if Reese does use this excuse, her PR team will make sure she comes out looking like the strong woman who survived divorce. I guess one can always hope.

  22. Don't mean to be a spoil sport, but please remember back to last year BEFORE "Rendition" was released. Jake - as well as Reese, director, scriptwriter and movie - all were on the first lists for Oscar buzz.

And we all know how that turned out, right?

    ReplyDelete
  23. My gut tells me now with this bald naked guy that "Brothers" will be better news for Jake than "Rendition". At this point this movie has been seen by those in the know. Highly unlikely to make it into Oscar night but better than Rendition.

  24. DiCaprio is one lucky dude, both of his new films are getting good buzz. Is he lucky or what?

  25. Jake is in Morocco filming, why would he be in L.A. shopping with Reese and Ava. The man is working.

He might be back this next week. :)

I missed this. What happened, where, who?

  27. Clueless before Jake went to London there was a screening of Brothers. Jake, Mrs. G., Jim Sheridan, and one of Jake associates were papped coming out of what looked like the back of a studio. Jake was pictured giving his assoc a pretty good hug and looked happy. reese was filmed rushing away not looking too happy. She was not filmed with Jake or his Mom.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thanks Tom. I wonder what happened.
[it always leads to more questoins!]

  29. Brothers has a Dec release date. Seems like there should be a trailer by now. I hope this movie works for Jake. I am not getting my hopes up at all, that way no disappointment whatever happens. I did not like Rendition at all, so am ready to see him in something I hope to like.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The original Brothers critically sucessful. Jim Sheridan is a great director, and the casting looks really good. I think it's going to do well.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thoughtful Spotlight today. Makes me remember just how many gay/lesbians in sport are just out there doing their "thing" - not neccessarily "in or "out". Takes the focus off HW for a minute.

"so much for being the hottest couple in Hollywood."

LMAO..your joking right?? I think that story basically fizzled out 2 months after Rendition to tell the truth.

Sad about Isaac Hayes : (

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think Brothers will be good too. Saw the original version and the story is interesting. As long as the acting is good it should work. Not blockbuster material but a good strong drama. I'm hoping for the best.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm looking forward to Brothers too and to Nailed. Not sure I'd want to see POP.

Wicked, I admire young Matt Mitcham too. I think he can lead the way for the young ones.

But for absolute courage in coming out, I can't go past Ian Roberts who came out whilst still playing one of the toughest sports in Aussieland - Rugby. A game where they tackle each other and lock together in scrums. And this would have been in the late nineties.

He's lost his way a little in the last couple of years (beating up a partner and other domestic stuff) but for sheer courage, he can't be forgotten

  34. Nice to see Gro and Katja in this "out spotlight":)
I was also shocked how few of the olympians this year is out.
I remember an interview with Gro H. a little while ago where she desperately wanted athlete men to come out, because in Norway, i don`t think there is any.
Gro and Katja bought a house on Gjøvik some months ago. They plan to live there permanently when their contract with Ikast ends in 2010.
