"Action is his reward"

Recent chatter about Tobey and the deal for Spiderman 4 and possibly 5 is a reminder of when Jake was in contention for stepping in and filling those Spidey tighties. Jake has always had a place for playing a superhero in him.

Would Jake's approach to the Peter Parker and Spiderman darker or more of internal struggle than Tobey's approach? Or would or could he have take it even further in the Superhero saves the world scenario?

Would they have to recast Mary Jane if he did, to avoid the Gigli curse?

Could he have taken over the franchise then and led it to the box office records it has become?

And the biggest one:

Would it have been better to step into established role and franchise like Spiderman or create a franchise on your own like he is doing now with Prince of Persia? Both from artistic perspective and from the Hollywood ladder.

I think it would be weird to see Jake and Kiki as lovers in a movie. Just wouldn't work for me.

  2. ITA Wicked, although I can think of a worse pairing.

Regarding the article Special linked to in the previous thread about actors being afraid to play gay, I'm not so sure that is the case. Yes, you're going to get some actors who are homophobic and won't do it, but I certainly don't see it as having a negative impact on careers anymore or something that scares off actors. You just have to look at the cast of Milk to see that.

  3. Forgot to add, I don't think stepping into someone else's role is a good career move, so I'm glad Jake didn't do Spiderman.

Jake as Spidey and Reese as Mary Jane? Despite being obviously too old for the role, I think she'd try it!

Who should play Mary Jane if Kiki doesn't?

  5. Kate Hudson was originally cast as Mary Jane, but turned it down to The Four Feathers, with Heath and Wes Bentley.

  6. I don't know! I loved Kiki as Mary Jane, I can't see anyone else playing her. I think Spiderman is Tobey's for as long as he wants to play the role - and I love it. I'm glad Jake has a superhero franchise of his own. I tend to like to see the original character stay with the sequels for continuity, but Jake would have been good too I think.

  7. Kiki portrayed MJ with that girl-next-door sweetness and innocent quality that is just right.

  8. Family who has a blog about their travels.

    Sept 8 entry:
They went from Fes to Erfoud "the last real town before the desert begins." Which is where PoP is on location. Said the hotel was overrun with PoP crew but didn't spot Jake, Ben or Alfred(Molina).

Change in Plans: Into the Saraha

"Morocco is thought-provoking, dramatic, challenging and beautiful. I am glad we made this the first stop outside of the US/EU comfort zone."

Wonder if Jake feels the same?

That should be Into the Sahara!

Now this I really can't see!

Torchwood fan, thanks for the link. I love Barrowman. We've rented and watched all the Torchwood Season 1 episodes. Season 2 comes out later this month and is already in the Netflix queue.

  13. Check out The Virgin Suicides.

  14. I love The Virgin Suicides, and I also really like Marie Antoinette; Sophia Coppola is a great director, and I hope they work together again in the future.

  15. Season 2 TW is even better and gayer than Season 1! Captain Jack really falls for Ianto. He even asks him out on a date.

  16. Speaking of HBO, did anyone watch True Blood? I know you sometimes need to give a new series a few episodes to get going, but my initial reaction was a big "meh". It just seemed off in a way I couldn't even describe. Everytime I see a new HBO show, I wonder all over again about the wisdom of canceling JFC.

  17. I'm gonna have to give True Blood a couple of more chances. It was'nt bad, I found it interesting but just a little over the top, but was'nt Six Feet Under also.

As for JFC, I know that show is the baby for most OMGers, But that show did nothing for me. I could not understand were it was going, the acting was bad, and Rebecca D. got on my last nerve. Austin Nichols presents could not save that show for me. Jake either! JMO

  19. The first time Jake had a chance at Spiderman, I think he would have made Peter Parker little more angst and a touch more tormented by the great power great responsibility thing, because of the other work he was doing. Now you wonder what he would have done with the role.

But that kind of role you either should have been Spidey right from the beginning, or passed on it and waiting something you can make your own, which is what he did with PoP.

  20. Marie Antoinette was as boring as it gets. Though Kiki was pretty good in it.

  21. I dont think its a good idea to follow in someone's footsteps. Jake would always be compared to Tobey. As phenomenal as he was, even Heath's Joker has been compared to Nicholson's. Heath wins of course.

By the way I saw TDK in IMAX format Friday. I strongly recommend it. It's not just the big screen, it's the 44 speakers that amplify every sound that make it worth it.

Destiny, I watched True Blood and was not thrilled either. I'll give it 2 more episodes before I make a decision though.

Will Smith was ruled out as Toothy. All the newcomers with no history keep guessing the same names. Funny how noone ever suggests Jake despite his being the #1 candidate. Ted must be busy editing the comments.

  22. Enjoyed the Barrowman comments. Thanks for the link. The man can do no wrong in my book.

After Elton has the top 50 "male" gay movies. I guess the male makes it a bit different from the last movie list. Maurice came in at 5. BBM is 1, where it should be.

  23. Prince of Persia is no more a superhero then Lara Croft. That's just blasphemy.

Tobey, Kirsten and James Franco were perfectly cast in Spiderman. I think if you try to replace any of those three, it just isn't going to work.

Still don't know how I feel about Baby Tile

Well, they sort of are - in a cinematic sense - characters from an entertainment medium brought to the screen, brought to life, fighting evil and going on fantastic adventures. They just don't come from the traditional comic book medium for superheroes, but hey, videogames are like the new comic books. I just meant that it's similar.

  26. also, the difference is that games are interactive, but there's also overlap, Spiderman has a videogame, for example - and the artwork and renderings of characters for both is wonderful. Very similar IMO. :)
