We've seen the sets, and the star, but what about the story? Know enough of the back story or want a little catch up to see how the Prince of Persia got started. Ok, sure the script is floating out there, do you really have the time read the whole thing, and where's the fun in reading 20 months before the release and knowing everything? So for those who want some PoP lite - this is your no calorie treat
A theme that jumps out is journey of redemption. It seems like redemption is something that Jake is visiting a few of his movies as of late. Brothers, PoP and in a way Rendition.
Redemption is a timeless theme, it is used in countless variations of storytelling. So the question is this, is redemption what Hollywood's writing more of now? Is it a more prominent storyline among more adult roles? Is Jake drawn to a more redemptive storyline as a part of his transition from less boy/man to man on screen?
Well I can see why Jake was an obvious choice for the POP role. His natural build, hair, voice etc all fit the Prince's look. Why they saw a need to bulk him up like a caveman, I'll never know. And the hair. I can't even bear to think about what they've done to the hair.
ReplyDeleteI think there is a lot more story to PoP than most non gamers thought.
ReplyDeleteHe does fit the Prince's role. The British accent should be interesting twist to it all.
I think the reason he might have bulked up so much if you look at the subsequent Prince of Persia games, well the cells from them, the Prince does seem big and more muscled.
I thought Bruckheimer was trying to blend some aspects of the other PoP games into the movie version.
As an actor redemption is a great theme to work with, there is so much range with it, and it allows your character to evolve. It really shows your skills as an actor if you get draw the audience in and have them buy in, and want you to redeem yourself as that character.
Bringing this forward from the last post:
ReplyDeleteDear Spin Jen:
Oh, wouldn't that just give J.G. a kick in her softer spots, which, of course, don't exist, so what the ef are we talking about?
FWIW I think the "JG" he's referring to here is Jennifer Gardner. She's no shrinking violet, that's for sure.
(But we all know that everything Ted says has more than one meaning behind it, so... *wink*)
I just can't get excited about this film. Movies like this are not my cup of tea. Didn't really like any of the Pirates of the Carribean movies either, and that's what PoP looks like to me. Oh well, at least there's Brothers.
ReplyDeleteThe reference to a kick in the softer spots that don't exist is probably a reference to Jake not having any balls.
ReplyDeleteI generally don't like movies like PoP either, although I thought Pirates I was fun because of Depp's campy performance. But Pirates II was a comletely boring mess, and I skipped Pirates III even though I love Chow Yun Fat. Hopefully PoP will suprise me.
Ted always does that oblique reference thing - Teddy trademark.
ReplyDeleteI will see PoP, for Jake - would hate to see the script and can't bear spoilers generally whoever's film it is ... the problem Destiny is trilogies isn't it - just too much mainstream family movie and not enough of the indie - wish PoP was a one-off but why milk one cow when you can milk three.
Interesting Palin theory on previous thread!
Jake in the LA AND NYC Landmark Cinemas this month.
ReplyDelete"As if I really needed a reason to see my favorite film of 2008, Man on Wire, again: beginning this Friday, the Landmark cinemas showing the documentary in L.A. and NYC will include with the film an animated short from 2005 titled The Man Who Walked Between the Towers, which features narration by Jake Gyllenhaal. Although not as appealing as a sing-a-long version (I can’t help but annoyingly hum along to Eric Satie as it is), Magnolia Pictures is hoping for a bump in family attendance."
Spout Blog Man on Wire
And for those who have never seen it you can watch it here:

Well, since there seems to be nothing else going on, I'll mention my own twisted theory about Palin. I think the rumors about Trig being the daugher's could be true. But I also wonder if in fact it really is Sarah's baby, and that all her reckless behavior (and lack of weight gain) was done with the hopes that she would lose the baby, since abortion was not an option for her. I just for the life of me can't imagine any mom to be getting on plane for a long flight the way she did.
ReplyDeleteAs someone I know says, I'll be driving the bus to hell for this one. :-D
"As someone I know says, I'll be driving the bus to hell for this one."
ReplyDeleteWell as a fellow bus driver many times over, you can always borrow my spare set.
interesting theory, destiny. carelessness. and back to work in three days - my neighbor was caring for a d.s. daughter on a feeding tube for four years!
ReplyDeletethey've brought in from Alaska, today, the "sex on skates" hunk, aka (according to his blog) "fucking redneck" - hockey player daddy who "doesnt want kids" - and the hype has begun.
I guess we've learned alot about hype, right?
would love to know whose palms are being greased for this one.
Jake's transition from boy/man to man - what is "maturity" anyway?
Who knew that watching Jake would come in handy for following politics. Even DListed has gotten in on the act. And then there's Jann Wenner wearing his colors on his sleeve with his US cover on Palin, too bad he won't do the same when it comes to covering HW.
ReplyDeleteGlad to have the loan of the wheels Special. Now I could use some company on that big thing. I wonder if I could put up with Reese for that journey....
^celebs don't ride this bus, they get the express
ReplyDeleteLOL. Well, as long as the express bus is here, let's add McCaine and as many other wingnuts as we can fit on it.
ReplyDeleteListened to Jake read The Man Who Walked Between the Towers this afternoon, he does such a awesome job with it. What a great for voice for storytelling.
ReplyDeleteSounds like he's got the bedtime story thing down pat. Sure the nieces and nephew think so too.
'Milk' trailer
ReplyDeletewe've already reserved a cabin on the bullet train to hell for her highness greesy reesy. looking forward to her making hell a better place!
ReplyDelete"I just can't get excited about this film. Movies like this are not my cup of tea. Didn't really like any of the Pirates of the Carribean movies either, and that's what PoP looks like to me."
ReplyDeleteITA with you Wicked. At least The Mummy was funny so you could laugh at it.
Re: Milk. I cant wait to see this movie. Looks like Sean Penn did a good job with it. I hope i'm right.
The Milk trailer looks really good.
ReplyDeleteHave to admit the 70's hair is killing me.
"The Times of Harvey Milk",)1984), the documentary, is excellent and very moving.
ReplyDeleteI, too, am looking forward to "Milk" - and Sean Penn looks as if he's doing a fine job -
Wow. I can't wait to see "Milk". The acting looks tremendous. Definite best acyor and best supporting actors noms are ahead for Penn and Brolin. I would love to see "Milk" get nominated for best movie and openly gay Gus Van Sant nominated for Best director. Both have good shots. Right now all the big buzz is about the acting though.
ReplyDeleteacyor = actor
ReplyDeleteDaniel Radcliffe's drag-queen dream
ReplyDeleteThe next “Harry Potter” movie might not be coming out as soon as planned, but star Daniel Radcliffe certainly isn’t hard to track down. He’s on the cover of the October issue of Details magazine.
Among the topics touched upon in the interview: Radcliffe’s dream role. “I think part of me would love to play a drag queen, just because it would be an excuse to wear loads of eye makeup,” the actor tells the magazine.
MSNBC
Thanks Special for link of Jake reading the story. Love his voice.
ReplyDeleteThe Milk trailer was great and Sean Penn was amazing. I really look forward to this film and am glad to see more gay themed films coming out.
ReplyDeleteI am with Wicked in not feeling overly excited over POP - just not my thing. I do look forwards to Brothers though and also to Nailed (although I think it could be either very good or very bad).
Its been a long haul of late between Reeke and the lack of new films being released for either Jake or Austin. But keep your spirits up guys since both Brothers and Informers is just over the horizon.
it would be an excuse to wear loads of eye makeup,”
ReplyDeleteyeah wait til he has to take all the crap off!
I can't wait to see Milk. Sean Penn looks like he will knock it out of the park. Of course those were my prime years and I was in SF when it all happened. Love Franco too. They are not being shy about the gay angle either. I expect some juicy love scenes. Don't expect the film to garner a huge audience though given the subject matter.
ReplyDeleteI liked the first Pirate. Depp was a hoot, but I waited for tv for version 2 and never did see 3. As to POP, not really my kind of movie. I will see what the reviewers say first, despite Jake.
I have tickets for TDK, Imax version this Friday. Can't wait.
i really like todays music. Sounds like a harder rocking, but at the same time dreamier X.
ReplyDeleteFYI:
ReplyDeleteA small, but still rather yummy update to Austin Media (it's been forever, I know!).
Two new pics from the Davis Factor photo shoot. At least they're new to me! :)
YEAH Hjulia! (((Hjulia))
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you!
Awesome pictures.
