Out Spotlight LXI

Today's Out Spotlight is Howard Bragman.

Born and raised in Flint, Michigan and Bragman graduated with a B.A in Journalism and Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1978, Bragman has been called by some "the best publicist in the business". He served as a vice president in the Chicago and Los Angeles offices of Burson-Marsteller Public Relations. He later founded Bragman Nyman Cafarelli (BNC) in 1989. Under Bragman, which went on to become one of the largest and most respected public relations firms in Los Angeles. In 2001, BNC was purchased by Interpublic Group, one of the world’s largest holding companies for marketing companies. In 2005, he went on to establish Fifteen Minutes, a strategic media and public relations agency.

He has created a visually directed media preparation manual aimed at young actors that is standard preparation for all actors at Nickelodeon Movies and Television. He also media trains hundreds of people including actors, CEOs, physicians, elected officials and attorneys.

As a nationally renowned crisis counselor, Bragman has provided litigation support for a significant number of high-profile cases and individuals. These include: Joseph Steffan, who was kicked out of the United States Naval Academy for his sexual orientation; the Lewinsky family; and Sharon Smith in Smith v. Knoller, a high-profile civil rights and justice trial involving a tragic dog-mauling death. Has served in crisis management for the Paula Abdul,

Bragman has also worked with athletes and sports entities his entire career. And has helped those athletes coming out of the closet. In 2003, he repped Esera Tuaolo as he came out of the closet. Since then, he has also been the publicist for the coming out of golfer Rosie Jones, WNBA player Sheryl Swoopes and former NBA player John Amaechi.

He has also helped those in Hollywood as well. First with Dick Sergeant [the second Darin on "Bewitched"] and Sheila Kuhl [California State Senator, who was on "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis"] in 1991. Then Amanda Bearse [Marcie Darcy on Married with Children] after she came out, and Mitchell Anderson after he came out. Other clients have includeds Bruce Villanch and Sandra Bernhard, along the way who deal with the issue. Bragman said talking about those who are ready to come out "When anybody comes out, it makes an amazing different. I remember when Dick came out and thought, "I haven't been on Bewitched for decades," and we called him a retroactive role model. But flowers and letters and notes started coming from people, and you realize, this guy can change the world."

Ask if he has ever advised an athlete or client to stay in, Bragman said. "If they're not ready emotionally, absolutely. The first male to come out of the closet on a team sport while they're playing certainly has to understand that the scrutiny is going to be intense. As John Amaechi mentioned, and as I believe, you have to be pretty indispensable before you have the balls to do that. This guy named Edward Bernays, he's sort of known as the father of public relations, said a P.R. person has different jobs. The first is to present the client to the world. And the second is to interpret the world for the client, and I take that very seriously. I talk a lot of times to my client about timing, and the right time to do things. And that's one of the biggest mistakes I see in the P.R. world. Just because you can get press doesn't necessarily mean you should get press at that time. So I try to help them understand what the right time is. That being said, I always tell people I've never had a bad experience with someone coming out of the closet."

He served an Adjunct Professor in Public Relations at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg Center for Communication from 1998 to 2003.

Bragman is active in the AIDS/HIV community, on lesbian and gay civil rights, Jewish causes and First Amendment protections. He has received awards and honors from numerous groups including AIDS Project Los Angeles, Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and Congregation Kol Ami. He founded the Jewish Image Awards, honoring positive portrayals of Jews in television and film.

He was asked to contribute his personal story to the book "Crisis: 40 Stories Revealing the Personal, Social, and Religious Pain and Trauma of Growing Up Gay in America."

He recently has written the book "Where's my Fifteen Minutes?" A book helping readers understand the changing world of today’s PR. If your public’s perception doesn’t match reality—if you are a better person, offer a better product, or stand for a better cause than anyone realizes— you need help.

Howard resides in Los Angeles with his husband, Chuck O'Donnell (a horse trainer), two dogs and a parrot. Bragman and O'Donnell were married in July, 2008, in Norwalk, California. Instead of gifts they asked his friends if so compelled they should donate to the efforts for No on 8!

“If a hitter has been in a slump, he should not be trying to hit home runs. They should go for doubles and singles. You've got to build your credibility, go back to the fundamentals.”

Talk is cheap and anyone can do it.

A good, engaging, entertaining, thought provoking movie/performance is much more difficult and doesn't need a blog to speak for it.

  6. See I think Austin is a very clever fella. He says much much more than what the subject he's writing on.

And thinks he's found an outlet to comment without really saying it. And it's disguised as a character in a movie blog.

    Immediately caught the alliteration comment.

Wow, Kacie, I was afraid you were gone. How sad to hear about your computer. Glad you have a new one, tho. Thanks very much for your thoughts, too. Means so very much to me & my family. What do you think of all this drama? Isn't it something. I don't know what on earth to think about this guy. It kind of smacks of alot of noise & wind.

  10. Oops, double posted.

You know, one of the nicest gestures in greetings? A double handed handshake. That's when someone shakes your hand, but then they lay their other hand on top of yours, making a kind of hand sandwich, so to speak. It's just a very warm thing to do and it makes you feel enveloped and good inside. It's also something that takes just a teenie extra bit of effort and time, but it speaks volumes to the other person.
People don't do it very often anymore. But when someone does, it really stands out to me.

Just had to say that this morning.

And double handed handshake to you, too.

What do you think of all this? I don't know what to think. It started out kind of intriguing, but now I don't know.

"dabbled" ?? Just how exactly does one "dabble" in several hook ups? How many hook ups does it take to get to the center of.... uh, I mean to realize that that's not the road you meant to veer off on?

  14. I can't imagine someone putting all of this out there with it all being a bunch of spin. They'd look like an utter fool.

But Jake doing a book? I kind of find that hard to believe with the heavy duty bearding he's been doing. Especially since it started out so tapioca pudding'ish and then, when it didn't get taken seriously enough, was escalated & escalated into the big shove-it-down-the-throat production that it is now. So the next step would be to write a book as a final attempt to dispel all the gay rumors? And what? Jake will name names? Can he actually lay claim to the name "Toothy Tile"? That's Ted's term, isn't it? Does Ted have the rights to it, lol?

Oh, and before I forget, I hear you, Destiny. Believe you me, when I see pictures like we had once again yesterday, it is tempting to want to call it out. I totally understand.

I do think, tho, that sooner or later, one reaps their own just rewards.

Nice catch on the weather in Venice, too, Chris. Wonder why they wanted to make it look like they were out together all day? Not good at all to get caught in a lie like that.

  17. Over the past four years there had been talk about Toothy and a Oprah like show and about him talking to high profile magazine at one time. Then there was the article that got heavily edited right around BBM. So there have been several times of trying to say something.

And remember - he does have family in the media/press - he has contacts not just through his hired staff. I don't think he pass on using all his resources if he needs too.

  20. Wow I am so confused with what is going on as far as Ian. Two books being written. One possibly by Jake. What happened to the HW mogul who was supposed to out Jake today. Ian is starting to come off as a little bit of BS and that is coming from someone who very much wants Jake to be outed.

Finally got to see PFB last night in DC with W and the Mrs. Very well done and quite moving. Austin was very good. I would love to hear how he got involved in the movie. I don't think he has done any interviews about the movie or how he got involved. SW was certainly terriffic.

Writers Guild honors 'Slumdog Millionaire,' 'Milk'
The awards ceremony is in sharp contrast to last year's event, which occurred during a break in strike talks.

    February 8, 2009

What a difference a year makes. The Writers Guild of America gathered in pure celebration Saturday night to hand out its top awards -- with key feature prizes going to the critical darling "Slumdog Millionaire" and the biographical drama "Milk." The scene was in sharp contrast to last year's event, at which the honors were doled out during a break in strike talks.

Simon Beaufoy was awarded another in a string of critical and guild honors for "Slumdog" as the recipient of the adapted screenplay honor. The film, based on the novel "Q&A" by Vikas Swarup, is considered the Oscar front-runner with 10 nominations, including one for Beaufoy, who did not attend the WGA ceremony.

Dustin Lance Black received a standing ovation after his win for original screenplay for the inspirational drama "Milk," about slain San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk. In one of the night's most emotional moments, Black thanked "God for a dream come true and I thank God for giving us Harvey Milk."

The awards took place simultaneously at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Hudson Theatre in New York.

  25. Interesting how much chemistry Jake has with any male. He looks the most relaxed and happy I've seen him in a while in some of those new pics. I had to laugh at those of him whispering to Reese. Her arms are folded, she is making a face and looks like she is reeling to get away from him. Most revealing.

No way she is pregnant. Look at her breasts. Its not just the belly that gets big, breasts start to get bigger even before the belly bump. She looks her normal self in 98% of the pics. I don't know where she got those extensions, but they look like a rats nest.

Happy to see Jake had a visit from his old friend Matt Katz. I think he lives in Paris now. Hopefully someone he can talk to about his life.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Destiny and PG, I agree with you about Jake pushing the Reese thing so hard. I think he dug himself into a ditch with that one that it will be very hard to get out of. I just don't believe in outing people against their will, and my hope remains he comes out on his own as it's been said many times has has wanted to. which brings us to the new rumours, which I am not sure whether to believe or not, or how Austin or bt would factor in. I do think though that him coming out as bisexual would be a step in the right direction and would allow him the freedom to not only admit to being with guys in the past but also to be open about same-sex relationships in the future. There is no way he can admit the relationship with Reese isn't/wasn't real. Saying he is bisexual would allow him to come out without humiliating her. I doubt he'd do the "I'm cured" thing, although I could be wrong. My sense has been for a while that he wants to be known as bisexual rather than gay and perhaps is the way he sees his sexuality, even if his preference is generally for men.

  30. I don't think the pictures were originally meant to address the Ian chatter, although I think the added baby bump watch was. I think they were a reaction to Hilarie's comment about Austin disappearing on the weekends.

That's why they had to label them as happening on Saturday, despite the weather. They thought we'd be too dumb to notice and/or it was already in the works and they didn't count on the bad weather.

And that's why we got Matthew in them. I mean, Matthew is such a good friend of Austin's, surely he wouldn't visit L.A. and hang out with Jake without Austin along, now would he? Ergo Austin couldn't possibly be disappearing to L.A. on weekends.

As for the book, if Jake had already signed up a deal with a publisher, we probably would have already heard about it. Publishers like to get that news out there because it's pr for them, and lets other people they may be pursuing know whom they've signed up. But they wouldn't say anything about the details of the book, indeed because you never know what is going to end up in it. I kind of wonder if this isn't old news, that Jake was maybe thinking about that when we got all that chatter from Ted about his coming out, being on a cover, etc.

Regarding Lincoln Booth, I would bet good money that Southern Gothic is still trying to raise money to get this film made, and that this is their way of trying to whip up some attention and interest in the project.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Maybe that's why Jake has been so silent about Heath...he's saving it for his tell-all.

Trying to cover up his past or not, this would be one book I'd put in for a pre-order from Amazon! lol!

  32. I just reread what Ian said in his last update and he did not say he was going to name the HW mogul today. He just said he had an important update. I still now think the guy is BS. I seriously doubt Jake is writing a book.

  36. Reading the Spotlight today, part of me was thinking how great it is to read about someone who helps people come out. But then the skeptic in me kept asking how many people has he counseled to stay in the closet, especially since most, if not all, of the examples are of people who came out after their career had peaked, or in the case of Ameche, was over. And the pr machine of which he is a part is part of the problem, just another reason why and/or tool to keep people in HW in the closet.

I'm glad you posted this Special, so don't get me wrong when I say I'm sick and tired of reading about gay men in positions of power who have the luxury of being out, marrying, etc., all while earning the big bucks keeping everyone else down on the farm. And who knows, maybe I'm wrong about Bergman, but I bet he has a wonderful "you can't come out now, but I'll help you when the time is right" speech.

  42. What I find interesting is that for 1 1/2yrs we have only gotten Reeke pics of mostly Reese and Jake together or very rarely Jake by himself. But, since he came back from London, Reeke has not only gone into overdrive with their photo ops, but we suddenly get pics of Reeke with other people. And this weekend we are treated to pics of Reeke with old friends of Jake. I wonder what changed in their PR stategy?

    ReplyDelete
  43. ... perhaps it was people complaining that Jake is never seen with his friends anymore only "Reeke."

You do remember not too long ago when some poster was appearing here asking what we'd like to see that would make us believe that Jake is in a relationship with Reese?

... and then whatever it was the majority of people would say would mysteriously be photographed very soon after.

They are watching us! They are watching us! They are watching us ... from a distance!

  48. From early 2007 there was a poster who would ask what it would take for people to believe. Not just here but all over the various boards. That was a PR troll. TRUST ME. Other people picked up on the theme as time went on as a way to list the "proof" and challenge the doubters but there is a person who pops up and asks that question who is working the sites.

Has anyone ever seen the Julia Roberts/John Cusack/Catherine Zeta Jones movie Americas Sweethearts? It was on last night. I am fluish so I was on the couch laughing about how accurate it is from publicists perspective. Billy Crystal setting up the dinner and making sure there were photographs "leaking" the tape etc.

It's a dirty job but someone has to make sure these people sell their products.

  57. Story from the ^^ LA Times on Sunday (today)

Southern California residents got a welcome reprieve today from a series of rainstorms that have drenched the region since Thursday, but the dry weather is expected to give way to another storm tonight.

Rain will continue through tomorrow as the third storm in recent days soaks a large swath of southern and central California, including Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties, according to the National Weather Service.

I wouldn't doubt all those pics "X17" posted are from different days. What makes you think just Reeke was? And why the fuck would I lie about raining and wet streets when it can be documented all over the world in weather reports and daily precipitation levels? If you want to find out more do your own research, look up rain levels, look up online NEWS pics, not gossip shit pics that get posted whenever theres a slow day for fillers or emergency PR savers.

  63. Just look at poor Shenae Grimes slipping about on those soaking wet LA streets on Saturday.

And here's a close up of those not-at-all bone dry streets.

    And from the LA Times
Southern Californians took advantage of breaks in the wet weather SATURDAY to enjoy the outdoors before rainfall begins again and continues off and on through Monday.

And since multiple reports of the dry Saturday AND multiple pictures of people walking around on dry streets on Saturday aren't enough, you can go HERE and see the LA Times tracking of the weather in LA, updated roughly every 30 minutes, which shows only one brief moment of light rain between 8:47am and 9:47am.

”Photo agencies hold photos for several days to offer exclusives to mag editors before they put the set online. ALL the pictures you see on agency sites are several days or sometimes weeks old.”

That's crap and you know it, or you would if you thought about it for a second. ALL of the pictures would include pictures taken at film premiers or award shows, so they obviously aren't going to be several days old. And anyway the picture agencies use their own websites to SELL the pictures, so they do put them up quickly.

So, yes, Reese and Jake and Matthew were probably out together on Saturday. This doesn't make Reeke any more real Chris, so stop being so touchy.

  67. Well if Jake is departing LAX it means he was away for the weekend. So he was not around yesterday. It looks like he is getting his stuff scanned he just wasnt dropping someone off. You are not allowed back in the terminals without a ticket. Bet jake was in NY or NC and the pics were an attempt to make it look like he was home yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  68. It is an absolute fact that agencies post pictures to public sites after they have made them available to the media outlets. The editor of US Weekly is not buying pictures from the same X17 site that your lowly eyes can see. There are agency sites that are only available to media outlets that get the pictures 24 to 48 hours before X17online posts them. Why it matters what day the pictures were taken is beyond me but one thing I know is that the date of candids is whatever they want them to be. Events are totally different they are up on wireimage, getty etc. w/in hours.

You know nothing about how these pictures get to the marketplace obviously so don't tell me what is crap. You the one that is touchy.

  72. Wicked why would that surprise you about the Mrs and PFB? Did uou cry?

No, I didn't cry. I didn't think the movie was that sad, so I didn't really expect any of us to cry, and the Mrs. was bawling.

Chris, if you want to insult people, you will have to find another place to do it.

  76. Reality Smites was pretty insulting to Chris and to me. Why don't you delete that comment?

We try to delete as little as possible and let people talk. Name calling will get you deleted. Reality Smites did not call you names.

  77. I can appreciate the reluctance to delete comments but it would be nice to cut regular posters some slack when they get badgered by someone who is clearly a troll. But hey it's your site.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Jake was obviously leaving (check out the shot of him putting stuff on a tray during the security check). Wonder where he's going???

    ReplyDelete
  79. Nope they weren't out Saturday, the streets and the planters would be wet. You don't live here so you don't know how it is, how it looks after it rains for 3 days. And FYI "Reality Smites" tr talked about agencies holding pics for sale about at least 8 months ago or more. Its not the 1st time.

So Reality Smites/UV/Sarah why don't you go console yourself with whatever you console yourself with and write a new Gyllenbabble post, I'm sure your 4 fans are dying to hear what boring gossip you have about your fav couple.

  82. Disagreeing with a regular poster doesn't make me a troll, especially when I actually took the time to post links to back up what I was saying. Anyway, tr backtracked from saying that all the pictures on agency sites are days old, so that's that dealt with and done. Chris there are plenty of pictures showing people walking on dry streets on Saturday, and I've already posted links to them as well as the news reports and weather reports from the day which show it was dry, so stop insisting you know how the streets of every part of LA must have looked, because it just makes you look really touchy. The name calling doesn't help you either.

  83. Jake may be heading to NYC to see Maggie and Peter in their play.

  84. Does it really matter when the pics were taken? Really?

'Cause they still look like Jake is having a gay old time talking to his male companions, ignoring Reese while she sucks on lemons in a desparate attempt bring veracity to their lie by wearing too many clothes to look pregnant.

Dry or wet streets, rain or shine, Reeke does, and will always, be fake and pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I backtracked about nothing. I was specifically referring to candid pictures which you know and you're full of crap to try to twist things around but I would expect that from you.

    ReplyDelete
  86. "Does it really matter when the pics were taken? Really?

'Cause they still look like Jake is having a gay old time talking to his male companions, ignoring Reese while she sucks on lemons in a desparate attempt bring veracity to their lie by wearing too many clothes to look pregnant."

Exactly. I'm just sick of these stupid overly complicated plots that people come up with and then attack you for if you argue against them. We know that Reeke can organize a PR shoot quickly when they need to, so why can't I believe all the available evidence and say that they organized one on Saturday without getting attacked? And tr if you were specifically refering to candid shots then you should have said so. And see, here's where things get really stupid for you. Because now there are candid pictures that say that Jake was departing LAX airport today. I say they were taken today but you just specifically said that candid pictures are held back for a few days, so when do you think they were taken?

    ReplyDelete
  87. He's departing LAX tom not returning and the pics are from today, not yesterday.

I doubt he is going to NY if he is going through LAX international, maybe back to the UK? Maybe Pop isn't done yet

    ReplyDelete
  88. I don't really care. I'm telling you what I know. Pictures don't get from the camera to a website in a few hours. When there is an event like the Grammy Red Carpet it is a huge undertaking to get the pictures on line as fast as possible. A few hours is the goal and it is a crazy mad rush getting it done. Most agencies get all their pictures from their crew for the day and go through them at night. They put them in order, pick the best shots (they go through 1000's) and get them on the market to a media only site. It takes another day in most cases for them to show up on Gossip Girls or Just Jared or Popsugar. This scenario is best case and assumes the pap turned in their memory card and so forth.

    You're the one attacking people.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I see no point about arguing about the weather. This is not the first time Reeke have not been dressed approriately for the weather. We know Jake can hide pretty well when he he wants to. I have no doubt pictures are stockpiled. They have been using Just Jared for PR last couple of weeks so the whole pregnancy rumor is a set up too. Weather info comes from selected locations, often airports. I would take the word of a resident before a weather report. Cute how desperate JIS crowd is to go digging up other pics to try to prove what the weather was.

The big question is where is Jake off to. Is he meeting with book publishers in NY?

    ReplyDelete
  90. LAX 10:25 PM, Jake has left from LAX to NYC many times based on lots of IHJ pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Jake does not look dressed for an international flight. They are quite lengthy from west coast so most people are in sweats or comfy clothes suitable for sleeping in. With a conecting flight, could be 18+ hrs travel time. Even non stops are a good 10-12 hrs to europe. I guess we will find out soon enough.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Man, tr, if that is true....

And they were really promoting that Rhianna was going to be on the Grammy's tonight, too. I didn't watch them tonight. Guess more will come out later if true, huh?

Well, I'm off to bed. I exited chat & now I'll exit here with my yawning. You all have a good night and sweet dreams.

BTW, it's not raining here where I live, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Yes,i know Jake has flown out of LAX to NY but that would be a domestic flight, the caption says LAX International, a different terminal.

Jake is clean shaven, like he is getting ready for work, Pop in the UK for reshoots?

    ReplyDelete
  94. LAX and LAX international, no difference, same airport. Thats what the "X" means. LAX is the local airport in LA. You take it to go to San Francisco or China, no difference.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Hey kumbaya, do you see how I get attacked for being part of the JIS crowd even though I agreed with you and said that I thought that the pictures were set up by PR? The only thing I disagreed with was the DAY on which the PR pictures were set up, but that is enough to make me a JIS straight troll. They tell you to go look at new reports and weather reports and then when you do and the reports show that it was dry on Saturday they say you are desperate for doing what they said you should do in the first place. And the funniest part of all of this is that there are pictures of Jake and Reese together and guess what? The streets are wet and have puddles. And now everyone is treating the LAX pictures like they were taken today, which is what I said was the case and that tr said wouldn't happen because candids are held back for a few days.

    ReplyDelete
  96. May I suggest its prudent at this juncture, no matter how great the rave those angels have going up there, that you climb down off that pinhead now, RS?

Oh, and by the by, the deceased equine would like to call it a night, too.

Jake is somewhere that Reese isn't. That is a cause celebre'.

    ReplyDelete
  97. 1. the pics you linked are a different set from the ones with Matt Frost. See the different outfits? yes the strett was wet but it was raining Thurs, Fri and Saturday morning. hard to tell when that set was taken, coulda been thursday.

    2. the reports show that it was dry on Saturday The weather report said it didnt rain after Saturday morning, which is true it only had a light shower in the morning. But this doesn't mean that the streets, grasses and planters DRY UP, quick as a whip! Have some common sense. Shit.

    3. Maybe the LAX pix are today, maybe they are from Friday last month, yestearday, who the fuck cares.

Hey I have an idea. Why don't you stand guard at LAX and wait for Jake to get back, document it and compare your pic timestamp to the pap pics when they come out on the internet. Yeah, do that why don't you. And don't come back and comment until you have your personal LAX pic/pap research report, ok. See ya.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Shit, I want to stop beating this dead horse, but it doesn't seem to know that it's dead.

Chris, why don't you go out and stare at a wet street and count how long it takes for the water to evaporate, and then tell me if that matches the time between the brief shower on SATURDAY MORNING - putting that in big block capitals so you don't get it mixed up with Wednesday, Thursday or Friday - and the time the pictures of Reeke were taken. Make sure to wrap up warm. Or you could stop whining just because I'll believe pictures, news stories and weather reports over you.

  100. More from Ian:

IUC Exclusive: Ex Girlfriend who Dated Toothy Reveals All

A Hollywood actress who dated actor Jake Gyllenhaal a few years ago revealed several interesting details to IUC about their relationship. For the sake of her not being blacklisted by studio execs in Hollywood, we’ll refer to her as “Penny”. Penny told IUC today she stopped dating Gyllenhaal cause he was either “asexual or gay”. “We went on several dates,” the stunning actress told IUC. “It became apparent he only wanted me around him so he could have a hot girl with him at parties and events. It was a total front. We never even kissed. Each time he’d make a lame excuse and then go over to a friends house, always a guy. At first I was crushed but as time wore on I realized Jake was hiding something.” Penny added Gyllenhaal is very aware of Ted Casablanca’s Toothy Tile Blind Item and says he often jokes about it. “He knows it’s him,” she said. “And he seems to get a kick out of it.” (More soon)

On gossiprock someone read one of Ian's book and here is what she said:

And just for the record: "His Highness" Ian Halperin is not gay, which makes his case all the more confusing. Did you read his Hollywood undercover? It's rather interesting. There's a chapter about "gay Hollywood" where he outs almost everybody except for Brad Pitt (of course), Kevin Spacey (yes, you read it right!) and... (unsurprisingly) Tom Cruise.
This topic is getting old and tired, anyway.

Jake's LAX flight took him Wilmington, and first thing in the morning he walked onto the OTH set, grabbed Austin and laid a big sloppy wet one on him, all the time making sure the cameras and everyone watched.

  113. IUC Exclusive: The Ethics Of Outing…Please Read This!

My regular readers have noticed that since the passage of the vile hate legislation, Proposition 8, in November, I have been outing prominent figures more often than Angelina Jolie adopts babies (speaking of Angelina, she may be a phony, but at least she had the courage to publicly reveal her bisexuality).

My decision to out people like Jake Gyllenhaal, Will Smith and others has sparked an ethical debate about outing. In a previous post, I explained that I can no longer remain silent while hundreds of teenagers kill themselves each year because they are gay and tens of thousands more are suicidally depressed. In fact, according to the Center for Disease Control/Massachusetts Department of Education Youth Risk Behavior Survey (1999), 33% of gay youth will attempt suicide and gay teen suicide attempts are four times that of heterosexual youth.

I believe that if these youths and their tormentors knew that their role models (athletes, actors and talk show hosts) were gay, it would go a long way to eradicating the homophobia and the shame. I especially believe that straight, progressive people like myself have an obligation to devote as much effort to stamping out homophobia as we did to combatting segregation and Apartheid in the 20th century. Where were most of the straight liberals, especially in California, when Prop 8 was marching to victory last year? Out knocking on doors for Obama, whose victory was a foregone conclusion. Brave.

There are many good reasons why gay people choose to remain in the closet (family, employers, religion) and I would never advocate outing the everyday citizen whose decision to come out is a very personal one. But when public figures choose to remain closeted, those who profit from their deception, especially those who go to absurd lengths to present a straight front, then I believe they are fair game.

There are those who will argue that my rationalization is simply an excuse to gain notoriety, even though I chose to disguise the names of the many gay Hollywood actors I discovered when I infiltrated Scientology a couple of years ago posing as a gay actor for my book Hollywood Undercover, despite the fact that naming names would have guaranteed an international bestseller.

Proposition 8 changed everything. When I realized that the Mormons and other hatemongers were headed to victory while most of Hollywood’s closeted actors remained silent, I was shocked.

Whether or not people doubt my motives, I would like to share a very poignant comment I received this weekend from an IUC reader named Tom:

“Great job Ian. I couldn’t agree with you anymore. If anyone recently saw Prayers for Bobby which was a true story, people would understand what you are saying. It happens everyday. I just wish I had gay heros to look up to when I was a kid. Movie stars and Baseball players were my outlet when I was a kid. If just one had stood up and said I am proud to be a gay man, my childhood may have been a little less difficult. I commend you and I hope what your doing convinces these celebs, especially Jake, how much they could help. There is certainly more to life than money. Powerful studios like Disney are the real bad guys. For sure the Homophobic money hungry men who run these studios could care less about kids like Bobby.”

That’s enough to convince me to keep up my mission, even if I have to spend every dime I have defending myself against lawsuits.

    Peace out, Ian

    IUC

  114. Interesting article at 8.24. But I disagree that HW celebrities should come out to be role models for gay kids. I mean, if they want to come out that's great but they shouldn't be forced to do so. Simply because they are actors and not civil rights activists. Education about homophobia should be started in schools, churches, at home and in politics. Not just HW.

Having said that, celebrities like Jake who actively beard and try to sell an image that is directly contradictory to who they really are, should most definitely be outed IMO. Stars like NPH and John Barrowman are great role models.

Is Ian Halperin onto something? I don't know. but it sure is a fun read.

  115. Rattler, you come up with the greatest things - I'll have to check that Beck video out.

Interesting OutSpotlight, and thanks for a song that was always a guilty pleasure for me too. :)

I don't believe in outing someone until they are ready, or forcing someone to come out - their personal well-being should come first, but a bearding campaign, no, but someone in power, such as a politician setting harmful policy but living as a hypocrite, throw them to the wolves. Noone should have role model forced upon them, but it does come with the territory of fame, somewhat, athletes, actors, etc.

    Happy Monday!
