Out Spotlight LXVII

Today's OutSpotlight Jane Addams. Addams was a Nobel Peace Prize winner and perhaps the most famous social worker from the United States. While she did not publicly come out as people do today, but for her time she would have been.

Jane Addams was born in 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois. She has been described as a sickly child, with a spinal curvature. Her mother passed away when she was two years old and drew close to her father, her three surviving sisters and her brother.

Addams was a bright young girl who dreamed of attending Smith College in Massachusetts but her father would not allow her to go so far from home, so she attended a school closer to her family . At an all-female boarding school she learned the importance of female friendships and began her life-long friendship with Ellen Gates Starr, co-founder of Hull House. Although many of her classmates dropped out of school to get married, there is little evidence that Addams ever dated a member of the opposite sex.

Addams went on to study medicine after college but found the work hard and uninspiring. She returned to Cedarville, as women of her era did, to take care of her family. After her father died, Jane experienced depression and without a sense of purpose. She desperately wanted to make a difference in the world. During this her stepmother took her to Europe to recover and study art while her spirit began to return, but she still questioned her purpose in life.

After returning from Europe, she resumed friendship with Ellen Starr, now a teacher. A female love of Starr's had moved away and she was heartbroken. She wrote to Jane, "The first real experience I ever had in my life of any real pain in parting, came with separating from her. I don't speak of it because people don't understand it. People would understand if it were a man." Soon Addams would become the object of Starr's affection. It is not clear whether she returned the affection.

Starr and Addams traveled to London together and there Addams visited Toynbee Hall, the settlement house that inspired her to start Hull House. Hull House's purpose was two-fold. It's primary purpose was to serve the poor inner city residents. Its other purpose would be a cure for the uselessness she and other educated women of her time experienced. Hull House on was founded on Halsted Street in Chicago in 1889.

Previously, social work was based on a "Friendly Visitor" model. The wealthy would visit the poor and model for them behavior that would help them better their situation. Addams came to see that poverty was not due to character deficits, but social conditions that needed to be changed. So in addition to helping people meet their immediate needs, Hull House worked for social change, addressing such issues as child labor, public health reform, garbage collection, labor laws and race relations.

The term lesbian was coined in 1890, one year after Addams founded Hull House. Although she would not have used the term to define herself, by today's standards, Jane Addams would be a lesbian. Mary Rozet Smith arrived at Hull House one day in 1890, the daughter of a wealthy paper manufacturer. Over the years she became Addams' devoted companion, a "Boston Marriage", virtually playing the role of a traditional wife: tending to her when she was ill, handling her social correspondence, making travel arrangements.

Unfortunately, it will never be known the full extent of her relationship with Mary Smith. Toward the end of her life, she destroyed most of Mary's letters to her. Perhaps trying to cover up a sexual component of their relationship. "I miss you dreadfully and am yours 'til death," Addams wrote to Smith. Smith wrote back, "You can never know what it is to me to have had you and to have you...I feel quite a rush of emotion when I think of you."

Perhaps the most challenging aspect of Addams's life and the one which won her the most notoriety was her involvement in the peace movement. Declaring herself a pacifist and speaking out against World War I. Although she would eventually win a Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts, it was an unpopular stance to take in 1914.

Addams believed women had a social responsibility to work for peace because working men would never be against war. She took on a leadership role in the Woman's Peace Party. In March 1915 she was invited to speak at an International Congress of Women in the Netherlands. Addams presided over the event and one participant said, "She towered above all the others and again and again when she rose to speak and when she closed the audience would stand and applaud...She led without dominating and with extraordinary parliamentary skill clarified and interpreted for the polyglot congress of women."

Jane Addams won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. True to her cause, Jane gave all her prize money away.

Addams had a heart attack in 1926. She never fully regained her health. As a matter of fact, she was being admitted to a Baltimore hospital on the very day, December 10, 1931, that the Nobel Peace Prize was being awarded to her in Oslo. She died in 1935. The funeral was held in the courtyard of Hull-House.

  4. What a lovely post on so many levels - for women, lesbian women, social work, working for Peace, speaking up to make a difference, working with and not against to achieve a goal. Jane Addams is an amazing woman - and today's song is amazing as well.

  5. What an interesting and inspiring spotlight! Even in a time when thought to be nothing more than a man's accessory, Jane Addams proved that women were, and still are, a force to be reckoned with.

Wouldn't her life make for a wonderful movie?

  6. Hey there! Coming to you LIIIIIIVE....

Had to do that in honor of the host of Dancing With the Stars, lol.

Well said, NETB. I can't put it any better than that. She's a really an interesting woman. I think thanks! is right. Her life would make an interesting movie.

"I miss you dreadfully and am yours til death." "You can never know what it is to me to have had you and to have you...I feel quite a rush of emotion when I think of you."

Wow. Those are fantastically romantic, written words. Those are the kinds of words written in letters & cards that you definitely keep & re-read time & time again.

miss you dreadfully. Man, that is some pining. So romantic. swoon.

sigh. That's what this world needs is this old romanticism.

Sorry I couldn't participate in the ol' JFC discussion. I'm dogsitting and I don't have my dvd with me. Plus, my Harold & Maude didn't come in the mail so I had to re-request it yesterday. First time that's ever happened since I have had Netflix. Probably lost somewhere. So I'm having another one re-sent.

It has been a really quiet, uneventful, tho nice weekend. Got a hurt back (happens once in awhile) so I try not to go up their stairs to my room too much. And poor little 15 yr old Libby, she doesn't walk too steady so I need to pick her up in the mornings & carry her outside. This morning was comical. I couldn't do it, it hurt too bad. So I had to scoot a dining room chair over, sit behind her & kinda scoop her up, all the while letting out a big ol' groan of pain. Giminy's. Right in the sunroom, too, hope the neighbors weren't watching. I'm sure it was hilarious looking.

I do believe I see a long gold chain around his neck. I wonder if there is a wedding band attached to it. The chain is too long to see the end. If the band is there it is under his shirt. My bet it is the same band he wore to the concert two summers ago. This guy is in a LTR with someone. I wonder if his significant other has a matching one?

  9. flf, I was wondering the same thing. Is the black shirt the only one he packed, lol? At least he looks great in it. I just hope it's been in the wash since he got there. Either that or maybe all these pictures were taken in the same day. I can't remember if you could see it in that video or not with the girl on the beach. I just remember seeing his face peeking around into the camera.

That video was funny & really entertaining. Those 2 ought to do more of that. That girl had no idea who they were.

Jake could really learn from Austin. I mean, really learn from him. Now, admittedly, we haven't seen a whole lot of Austin until lately. But look at what he's done with his on-cyberair time. He's blogging. He's reading a portion of a book. He's helping to make a fun video with a co-star. Nothing fancy; just a camcorder & a visit with a total stranger, whose name they learn. And he meets people. Poses for pictures. And not just poses for pictures, but visits. Peeks at their baby.

What is Jake doing with his on-cyberair time? I don't think it needs to be said; heck, we all see it every 2 weeks. C & S.

Austin is doing what Jake used to do. Or when Jake is doing what Austin is doing, he's doing it behind tinted car windows and behind a 12 ft. high fence perhaps.

Here's to entertaining oneself. raises glass of Diet Lipton Peach Papaya Tea. And entertaining others. Thanks, Austin!

    Tom, who're you talking about?

  11. Tom, who're you talking about?

PG Girl I am talking about the new pics of Austin in Wilmington. He is wearing a long gold chain.

I also just listened to lastest video of Hilarie interviewing Austin on the beach. A couple thoughts. I dont think Hilarie knows Austin is gay. Austin is probably not out on the OTH set. I also think Hilarie would have not asked that question or Austin answered the way he did if they were a couple. I also thought it sounded like Austin talked as if he had no steady gf. I know he is supposed to be talking about Lincoln but I think he is comparing Lincoln to himself.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I can see why Hilarie refers to Austin as the mystery man.

  13. Hello,

I am glad to be back at last ! I had to leave to pay my grand parents a visit and all I can say it's I terribly missed this blog!
Shame on me LOL, I was delighted to see my family all the same.

Great Spotlight and what incredible character was Jane Addams. There are certainly biography about her. I even think she deserves a biopic.
You know I really don't understand the fear some have towards people who haven't the same sexual identity , I wish all people around the world could open their eyes and see how exceptionnal an human being who can love is, whatever who he or she chooses to love.

  14. Very interesting woman and spotlight. I enjoy Sundays so much because we always learn about someone new and significant.

I love the new Austin pics but found the new video at sgoth even more interesting. Hilary asks him if he wanted the Lincoln role since the character gets a lot of chicks and you can tell by his answer that he is totally indifferent to women in that way.

We booked our last hotel yesterday for our May trip, so I should be back to having some free time to visit my favorite sites again. Planning travel is a lot of work.

I need to see that new video of Austin. Thanks, Tom, I'll have to look again. I was too busy looking at the small amount of buttons he had buttoned, lol.

  17. today's song is amazing as well.

IMO, one of the best records of the '90s is Lisa Germano's Geek the Girl. I saw her live and she was great.

Love the Spotlight on Jane Addams. She is known as the mother of social work.

Saw this in WaPo today and just wondered what you all think. It's about the career choices of Nicolas Cage, but I couldn't help applying to Jake and Austin.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Cage while interesting and talent, is a eccentric and a loose cannon. I remember reading what he was like on his uncle's movie Peggy Sue Got Married, and his behavior while shooting Birdy. It was just kooky some of it was really bizarre. And demanding.

I just wonder if that grew old for HW, and maybe even for him. I wonder if he lost himself to the eccentricities.

Talking about eccentric has anyone seen the trailer for Grey Gardens with Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. This is one I want to see.

    Grey Gardens

  19. I was just thinking about Cage's career the other day, oddly enough. Very interesting article, although it sadly left a lot of questions unanswered. Did Cage do this because he wanted the money, because that is what is mostly being made these days other than true indies, because it's easier work, or maybe he wanted to do something different or for fun and couldn't find his way back to the other kind of work, for any of the above reasons, or loss of interest in him for that kind of work?

One of the things that I worry about with PoP is that Jake is doing this at such a young age, before he's really established himself as a serious actor or someone who really has an identity. I think that happened with Frasier, he just sort of got lost in the Mummy movies. In contrast, Depp and RDJ had long careers built up, and very distinct identities that they brought to their roles in Iron Man and the Pirate movies, and that not only helped them keep their other careers as well, but also improved those films.

I think there is a big risk for Jake doing a film like PoP in his twenties. Unless of course that is the kind of movies he prefers to do, and even then, there is a lot of competition for those types of films, and the dustbin is littered with lots of actors whose career seems to have come to a halt because of franchise movies.

Now Austin has clearly had to take some of the roles he has, particular OTH, because of where he is at in his career. But it seems to have turned out to be a very good move on Austin's part--it shows that he can build a fanbase, given the chance, by having a star turn like this he stands out rather than getting lost in the material, and it sounds like he's trying to use the opportunity to do something more interesting, rather than just settling for more of the same.

I have lots of thoughts on Hilarie after mulling around some of Tom's posts, but since this one is already long I'll take that up later today.

  22. Interesting article on Cage and I agree with you all on the comparision with Jake. However this part in the story it's clear that Cage would like to assume the mantle of Clint Eastwood cracked me up. Eastwood was laughed at and made fun of relentlessly when he was in all the "Spaghetti Westerns" that were a large part of his early career. People have conveniently forgotten those stupid, awful movies.

No matter what is said about Cage and his career, one thing I have fondness for him is his huge love and respect of animals. We share the same vet who told me Cage has quite a few of them, all well taken care of and loved. To me qualities like that in a person trump whether he made a good movie or not.

In matters of life overall (when you are 80 years old and looking back) most would agree love comes first, then career. This applies to Jake too but I'm not sure where he's putting love and career considering the Reeking.

    ReplyDelete
  23. How about the movies Clint made with the monkey. Clint needed the paychecks though he has seven kids with five different women. You swallow your pride and make the movies that will bring in the dough when you need the green.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I know everyone hates when I say this, but I'm going to say it. Because I think the other side of the aisle needs to speak up in the house.

I think it wasn't about the career that he bearded for. The time of stepping up things was right after Baby Tile was supposedly born. I think he held off doing active bearding as long as he felt he could. I think he knew of the two of them, (J&A, having the larger profile he was the one who had to do it. Now remember, Austin was seen on a date with Jen Esposito at one of the biggest paparazzi place in LA, Madeo, when he was promoting JFC. Trial balloon But Austin bearding wouldn't take the heat of them to have a private life, Jake doing it would.

I don't have kids of my own, but have been basically a third parent to my niece and nephew who live 5 minutes from me, and from the moment I held them I knew I would do anything to protect them. I can't imagine how a parent must feel. And even the people I love I feel that way for. So I can see why Jake could do this, and not just because for the career but for Austin, their family and their life together.

And I really wonder how you would feel if you were Austin and read how people praised you and trashed the person you have loved for so long. What would you do if someone said to you were great but I can't stand your gf, bf, partner, wife,or husband. Me? I would probably to punch them.

I don't think Jake is anything like Nic Cage. His co-stars and directors have never said such negative things about his behavior. Have you ever heard anyone on one of his pictures really trash him?

Nic loving animals is a great, it shows he has heart and compassion, maybe just take some of his love and compassion and understanding he has for animals and give some to the people he works with.

    And FYI
I agree, kind of like Tom Hanks did for a while time too. I have admit, I still love seeing Clint and Clyde. And Ruth Gordon was pretty funny too. And I love some of those goofy Tom Hanks movies, Dragnet, Bachelor Party, yeah they're on the shelf.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You sound angry, Special. I've never trashed Austin or Jake, or were you talking to someone else?

Special you brought up bearding for BT. That's what I meant when I wrote this: This applies to Jake too but I'm not sure where he's putting love and career considering the Reeking, that I'm not sure if he's Reeking/bearding because of career or love, which one is more important to him. Maybe he does it for career to make more money to support his child? I'm not sure if that's love, either, considering all the parents who are too busy working for the future (Cat in the Cradle song!) to appreciate today. Lucky for you, you have a stance. I don't, mine changes every day with Jake, Austin, BT, Reeke.

maybe just take some of his love and compassion and understanding he has for animals and give some to the people he works with. Oh to have pure non-conditional love of animals instead of backbiting, selfish, agenda-filling human assholes!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I am not angry. I just want say something. I didn't write it in an angry spirit or intent.

I never said you did Lane. But I have read many times over and over about Jake's wrongs, and Austin not having any. Everyone does wrongs, and faults, me included. It just seems like Austin always gets the get out of jail card, where Jake get the go directly to jail do not pass go one. And you know in Monopoly everyone has to get a crack at all the cards in the Chance stack.

And I understand the unconditional love from animals. It's amazing. They just give back no matter what. Dealing with people I quote the Beatles, "And, in the end, the love you take/ Is equal to the love you make." And if you treat people like assholes they are going to be assholes back.

  29. My whole point in posting the Nic Cage article was what Destiny said-

maybe he wanted to do something different or for fun and couldn't find his way back to the other kind of work

This is why I worry about a younger actor doing a franchise of any kind. I think it can typecast you and make it hard for you to find your way into any other roles.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Okay, I'm baaaack! Done dogsitting. Back is feeling a little better. At least I can get down to one knee now & get back up without yelling to kingdom come. snicker. Man, back pain is not funny, tho. But what can you do, huh?

Oh, boy, I love Dean & Duluca. Tomorrow is a cubemate's birthday and I went to get her some crackers & cheese, but man, their cheese is just too darn expensive. And I just want some good cheddar; I don't know about this 100 yr old aged stuff. Anyway, I went with the cheese/potato soup. I got to taste it and ohhh, I about draped myself over the counter going on & on about it. So I got her a pint of that. She's a cheeseaholic, like myself. She's going to love it.

Okay, I come back & Special's all upset. (I can hear ya now, , I'm not upset! I'm not upset! I just had to say something. lol. Aw, I'm teasing ya, Special.

I can't really pick on Austin, tho. I don't know much about him. And he's just barely come out of the woodwork, so to speak. Give him a few. I'm sure there'll be something. I'm kidding! I'm kidding!

And I'm not going to pick on the Jakester right now either. I'm just going to state something, tho. Let me pull a sympathy card out of the stack and play it.

Special, when this whole Reeking started, I was cutting him alot of slack because I felt sorry for him. I can remember it. Especially like during those Cabo pictures because he looked miserable those first few months. Absolutely miserable. And I felt like the poor thing was being dragged hook, line & sinker into the whole deal by his people. The fool that I was.

Sure, there are times he still looks miserable. I don't feel sorry for him anymore, tho. Not because he felt he needed to do it. I can understand it if it was going to get him the "big pay-off" so he can be what, set for life, I guess? Not have to worry about money anymore? Okay, I can understand that, who wouldn't. For the baby. Endearing. Then do the beard thing and be done with it.

But it's not been that simple. It's been a 2-yr deal, with alot of "leaked" lying done by his people to the rags (stories that he ought to fully well be aware of), photo ops with Reese's children with the insinuation that he is becoming like a stepfather to them, disagreeable behavior towards the paps (and I don't want to hear any paps are snakes talk. Yes, they are violating. But they're still people and don't need eggs thrown at them & don't need to be spit on like they're scum of the earth), and just way over the top appearances, to the point where I began to believe he enjoys it.

It is hard for me to just want to cuddle the guy when I have seen all of that. For 2 years. It tends to make me a little leery & distrustful. I can't help it.

I'm going to be like that with anybody; a friend, a co-worker, whatever.

And I don't think I'm the only one who has grown weary. Actually, I was thinking last week that Ted's tone of voice toward Jake/Toothy has really changed. His comments & blind items on Toothy always sounded funny or captivated. Fascinated. Kind of amused. I would say now that Ted's keyboard tone borders on sarcasm, disenchantment, almost bitterness. I'm not saying I'm bitter or anything, but to me, Ted does not sound like he did in the beginning saga of Toothy. That's a whole other deal, tho.

  31. So, I guess I won't say anything anymore about either one. Can't win for losing.

And I'll say this. Special, you are someone to admire & behold. Because you can look past everything. I guess I can't. I mean, I can on some things.

I would love nothing better than to just speak nothing but glowingly. But it's hard to ignore when that person has a whole other alter ego. I honestly don't know how you do it. And I say that in totally honest admiration because I truly wish I could. I guess I'm just bad that way.

Now on my way home, I was thinking how I was going to get on here & bring up an idea of a fantasy picture of the 2 boys all tuxedo'd on the red carpet together. Just kinda dreamin'. But now I've let myself get into a funk.

I don't understand this viewpoint, but maybe that's because I have the maternal instinct of dirt.

I also don't get why Austin said his power animal is a seagull because it has hollow bones like him.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm gonna have to think about that Nic Cage article, but my initial feeling is that it's rather subjective - of course an actor can't please all of the people all of the time, and some iconic peformances cannot ever be duplicated. Nic Cage has had some outstanding, outstanding performances - Leaving Las Vegas was so very affecting, and Moonstruck is unforgettable. All actors will have clunkers from time to time, and I don't think you can forecast any actor's career by the path others have taken. Don't forget the comeback of Mickey Rourke. And it's all about getting work too - in Clint Eastwood's example - he couldn't find work in the US so went over to Italy for the spaghetti Westerns, and while they may have been criticized initially, it didn't take long for them to be appreciated for the wonderful film classics they are, even the music in them. I may be off in my own orbit somewhere, but we think they are great. And look at Clint's brilliant career today. An actor's career should be looked at as an individual thing - we don't even know what Pop is going to be like yet.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Interesting spotlight Special. I can definitely relate to the feeling of not knowing where you fit in and wanting to make an impact on the world. The letter from Mary felt to raw and romantic to me. Great music today too. I couldn't join the JFC chat either yest unfortunately - my laptop went down and I had to do a complete reinstall - oooh what fun - NOT : /

I should be ok for the movie club unless PG got the last copy...lol.

  36. You say what you feel Special - just like us. Sometimes I don't agree but - hey express it. You hold back a lot I'm sure.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Boy, that Austin is a man after my own heart - reading The Fountainhead, talk of power animals and spirit totems. My power animal right now is the grey wolf, but I have had others at different times in my life - deer, redtailed hawks, eagles. I haven't listened to him yet - but Austin may mean that hollow bones allow you the lightness to take flight. I couldn't get it to play properly yesterday to hear him read from The Fountainhead.

    ReplyDelete
  38. One idea about getting Harold and Maude - check out your Local Library - lots of them have DVD's and many will have Harold and Maude. And it's free- with your library card.

    A girl who loves libraries! : )

    ReplyDelete
  39. As you probably knew I would Special, I completely disagree with you. :-D

Reeke was already underway when Austin went to dinner with Jennifer Esposito after appearing on that talk show for JFC. He was probably just trying to get some publicity for the show and himself by going out with a friend. Jake clearly wasn't going to do that for him. There were was no hand-holding, no pictures of them sitting in the window trying to look like a couple while being papped, no tabloid stories about how they are now an item and soooo in love. And they looked like they were genuinely having a good time, unlike Reeke. I just don't see how you can say that is comparable to what Jake is doing. And we never saw it again. I don't see how you can say that one dinner was meant to stop the rumors and that Jake somehow had to fall on the sword as a result. Especially since Reeke was well under way.

And I don't think Baby Tile was a reason for the bearding, or if it was, it was because with a baby Jake had to prove to Disney or whoever else he was courting at the time that he wasn't going to come out of the closet.

I also completely disagree with your belief that Jake is bearding to protect Baby Tile. Yes Austin came in for some nasty, trollish comments on some of the gossip sites, but you don't live your life based on what a few trolls say. And Austin is a big boy, and you have to have a tough skin to be in the movie business. And have you heard anybody say one bad thing about Ricky Martin's or Aiken's babies? I haven't, they seem to have helped win over people.

Finally, and most importantly, you don't pretend to be someone else's stepfather to protect your own child. And yes, Jake was doing that, and from what I hear there is a new tabloid story out there talking about what great step parents Jake and Abbie are to Deacon and Ava.

Just put yourself in Baby Tile's shoes for a minute. Can you honestly say that if your dad had been out there pretending to be involved with another woman, and passing himself off as a stepfather to her children, while hiding your mother and you and your siblings away, that you would have been okay with that? That you wouldn't have felt there was something wrong with you or that you should feel ashamed of yourself for not being good enough to be seen in public with your father?

    ReplyDelete
  40. But Destiny, not once do I read one word about Austin is responsbile. He had to be a part of this decision. I just don't think you can take him out of this.

And you don't go to Madeo with a date unless you want it look like a date.

He is involved with Jake. And with Baby Tile, he is a parent. He would have be involved in the decision.

And getting to know Austin more and more through what is he letting his fans see of him, you can tell he is not talked into anything he doesn't want to do. He is truly an independent thinker. So the argument that he was a pushover and just did it doesn't fit.

I just think that Austin is part of this and he need to be a part of the responsibility of well. He's a big boy, he can handle it. In fact I don't think he would have allowed it for his child if he didn't agree with it.

I just feel that Austin is not blameless but he is constantly getting a pass. Jake, Austin and Reese all share blame.

Guess we will just have to agree to disagree about this.

  41. Do I see a chain on Austins neck in those pics with the fans in NC or is that that ladies hair that is standing in front of him.

  42. No one involved in this ugly charade deseves a get out of jail free card. Each are culpable for not only their actions, but the consequences as well. Whether those are immediate, like the blow back Reeking has generated, or long-term, in careers and/or familial troubles.

And there will be hell to pay for them all in the end.

  43. Okay, on to my third lengthy post of the day, which is to finally answer Tom's post about how Jake better watch out for Hilarie. My first reaction, which I posted, was to think no, if anything it would be some hot guy. But after some more thought, Tom might be on to something.

It's clear that Austin agreed to go along with the bearding, but we don't know why, or how he really feels about it. But I suspect that he didn't expect it to turn into what it did, or to go on as long as it has. I still think the bearding is largely about PoP, and I would bet good money that meeting where both Jake and Reese looked so pissed after dinner with Bruckheimer that they were told PoP was being delayed a year. I also bet at some point Reeke was told it was not working, and to dial it up with the set visits, vacations, hand-holding, etc. And of course thinking you'll be okay with it and then living it are probably two very different things.

I also think that once the bearding dialed up that J&A probably stopped going out in public. We've had no sightings of them, and rarely any sightings of Jake that didn't involve Reese. Especially after the new photos, I think they still probably go biking as it is easier to stay hidden, but I really do not think they're going out together to restaurants, bars, basketball games, etc.

So after a couple years of this, Austin finds himself in Wilmington, where he doesn't have to see Jake heading out for his bearding appointments, and he has this pretty, interesting, talented kindred spirit to hang out with. Someone who probably doesn't put her work ahead of her life. Someone who'll go out to a bar with him at the end of the work day, go to a restaurant, hang out in public with him. Someone who is probably even thrilled to be seen out with him, proud for people to know this handsome charming, smart man is her friend. Someone who has also given him project to be excited about and work for. And, perhaps most important of all, someone who has helped him find his voice again.

I suspect most relationships don't survive the closet, and I'm talking about today, in an age when most people have different expectations about what gay life can be, and in the age of cellphones, internet gossip and gawker sightings. I think most people would be hard-pressed to name anyone who is believed to be in the closet and who is also in a long-term, successful relationship. The only other one I can recall is Hayden, and we all know what happened with that one. I could be wrong, but I just don't see Austin as the kind of person who is willing to put up with that for years/decades to come.

Austin has always gotten a PASS with (most) posters on this site!
I agree, if Jake and Reese are bearding, Austin is a part of the game and a willing participant and should be called out no matter how (cute, handsome and quirky) some see him as.

He's protecting his career! Just as most posters here think this is the main reason for Jake's bearding, it's the same for Austin!!!
Austin is not as big and well known as Jake at this point in his career, we all know that. Austin keeps a low profile and seems to be totally annoyed when paped around Jake. It seems to me that as long as the spotlight is not on him, or more important, he and Jake together, he can focus on his career.
If Jake and Austin is together, Austin is just as involved as Jake is. That's why I see them as being bi and in an open relationship, whatever it is.

  46. ^^ Sorry, that's me.

  47. If there is a Baby Tile then what Austin is doing to that child is wrong too, and I've said so before.

And it's not great that Austin agreed to go along with the bearding. But I don't agree that Austin's agreeing to Jake bearding makes him as morally culpable as Jake They are not joined at the hip. It's not Austin who is out there lying time
he holds hands with Reese and lying every time he lets people think he's a stepfather to those children.

For me there is a big difference between being in the closet, and bearding. Austin is in the closet, I don't know if he would be if not for Jake, but there is no way for him to be out and Jake in.

Bottom line, I admit that I cut Austin more slack and feel differently about him than I do Jake. I'm not saying my reasons are any better than the reason anyone cuts them both slack or doesn't cut either one of them any slack. They are just the reasons why I feel the way I do, and I don't expect everyone to think or feel the same way I do.

One last difference, when I look at Austin, I still see the possibility of change, I still see the same person I became a fan of.

When I look at Jake I see a lifetime of bearding and hiding, and the person I became a fan of seems to have been almost completely sublimated by what Reeke and pr want us to see.

  49. The comments on Just Jared's post of Reese at the movie premiere are very funny. Her dress is awful (someone compared it to a gum wrapper), the shoes don't match the dress, and she's in a short dress and standing like a truck driver. Part of a comment I especially found funny:

Reese did the premiere right, she looks like a monster. Btw where’s her gay alien bf? Those shoes DO NOT GO with that dress, the only thing they have in common is being ugly. The shoes don’t even fit, guess she didn’t want to exchange stolen goods for the right size so she’s stuck with them.

  50. What the hell is she wearing?!?!?! Did she take the wrapping paper from birthday gifts or the foil from her highlights and use it as a dress?

  51. Is that what this whole deal is about? About Austin being blameless? I don't think Austin is blameless. I'm like Destiny. I just don't put him as big of a violator as Jake. Of course they're all to blame. I don't heap it all on Jake.

Heck, usually we're catching flack for putting any kind of blame on anybody. Is today/tonight my get out of jail free card night? lol
    I'll take it.

    Truce, Special. hug.

m, LJ is driving me nuts today and it's about a post. I sure wish I could talk to you. Have you seen
it today? Do you know what I'm talking about? I could just pull my hair out, I swear. I don't want to talk about it on here, though.
But, aaaarrrrgggghhhh! I could just yell at the top of my lungs into the night. And stomp. And maybe even toss a few pots & pans in frustration.

ECF, I just never know when you're going to pop up out of the bushes, lol.

And Tom, you crack me up. Everyone else is making their case and you're being so good and talking about Austin's necklace. I gotta hand it to you, buddy. You have willpower of steel. I couldn't do it.

As you can well see. My vow up above lasted only a few hours. snicker. Heck, I can't stay upset for long. I swing back & forth like my old clackers from
5th Grade. Remember those things? Clackers? They were all the rage long time ago. But hey! Least I admit it.

I need to turn in and get in bed. Could easily take a whole bottle of my Equate brand Aleve and it probably still wouldn't cut it. Once in awhile, I just need that oxaprozan.

    Y'all have some sweet dreams.

  52. I also don't get why Austin said his power animal is a seagull because it has hollow bones like him.

True, most birds have air-filled bones but what makes a bird a bird is FEATHERS. Not if they can fly or have wings or air-filled bones, etc. Also there's a new comment on SoGoth that says there's no birds as seagulls. Wonder if Austin knows that! I guess he will now.

    PG what is "it"?

  53. About Jake & Austin :

As all of you probably know I hardly ever let Jake off the hook. I agree with what PG and Destiny say. I don't think the bearding is to cover BT although it may have helped.
There are times, like now, that Jake very successfully disappears and no one knows where he is. Austin disappeared for months on end until now. Neither Jake or Austin are so famous or notorious that the paps follow them relentlessly. All celebrities can lead a private life if they wanted to. Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, anyone? Meryl Strrep is such a famous actress did she ever let her private life get into the tabloids like Reeke? Never. They could keep BT hidden if they wanted to. Not for long, but initially, yes.

Yes, I agree Austin is to blame too for the bearding. But nowhere near Jake. Austin's blame is only because he didn't stop it. Jake's because he's taking part. Huge difference. Austin could have bearded too, but he doesn't. For that alone I like him.

I will never forget those awful Deacon & Jake pics. Those pics made me ill. Reese is a total bitch to pimp her kids like that and I blame Jake equally for taking part. I hold Jake responsible for all the crap that appears in the tabloids too. That stuff has been going on for more than 2 years. He could easily have stopped it if he wanted to.

Jake & Reese are equal partners in Reeke. She for her image in not wanting to look like a loser after her divorce and he for publicity and connections to get projects. Too bad things have not gone according to plan.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Austin is not bearding because: 1. if it gets out he is gay it will not be nearly as destructive to his career. 2. no one gives a hoot about plastering him on every single tabloid and what not. Big difference.

I have a feeling that if he had a need he would beard, oh yes he would. Jake found someone he knew and was friend with so that it would not be as painful to play the whole charade. Austin would do it in a much shrewder way.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think Jake is bearding 100% for his career. I think that Austin must have agreed with it because he doesn’t want to be the cause later of resentment and frustration if Jake’s career fails. Austin is an actor too and he knows Hollywood's homophobic system. I think Austin gave Jake the freedom to do what he wanted to do, manufacture a “straight” life for the cameras, so that Jake can feel he is doing everything to have the career he wants and not later blame the fail on gay rumors and on his partner. We can’t compare Jake’s level of bearding with Austin. Austin must have agreed to it, but he is not equally responsible as Reeke is, who are participating and pushing it endlessly in the media and involving the kids. There are ways and ways to beard. This over-the-top, high profile bearding is manufactured for a career, to create a bankable marketing product that sells and not for personal reasons. It doesn’t mean that as a side benefit, he gets privacy to have his own private life without risk of being exposed, but I don't think it’s the main motivation at all. I think that Jake enjoys the attention of the media that Reeke gives him too and he is very willing to participate. Austin seems like a genuine private person who doesn't enjoy that side of fame.

  56. In a three-way race at the box office, there was only one winner: Nicolas Cage's Knowing.

The thriller grossed an estimated $24.8 million, topping expectations and the weekend standings.

I Love You, Man, the trendy No. 1 pick going into Friday, opened in second, with $18 million. Duplicity, the supposed litmus test on Julia Roberts' career, was said to have put up solid numbers in Canada, which south of the border means the movie opened in third with a so-so $14.4 million.

  57. Austin is as ambitious as Jake, he'd beard if he had too. He's not famous enough yet.

    ReplyDelete
  58. The blame game exists because of the children factor. There may be a dispute about the existence of BabyTile but Ava and Deacon are real live little people.
Now I'm of the opinion that they are already partly screwed because of who their parents are, but it doesn't mean that Jake needs to add to that.

I have always said that I have no issue with Jake and Austin bearding, but I still believe that Jake had plenty of opportunity to find a HW player without children - Jennifer A comes to mind.

So Jake is to blame 100% for agreeing to choice of beard, Reeke are 100% to blame for taking the bearding to ridiculous levels and Austin is to blame for agreeing to the mess in the first place and then possibly not extricating himself (and BT if he or she exists)from the situation

  60. lane, I'll talk to you tonight. I am soooooo late. Well, not late, but I am going to be walking in @ 7 on the dot and on a Monday, that's not what I want with my new duties & all. Fun day today, tho, cause it's somebody's birthday. Birthdays are always fun because I love to give presents. And it's nothing at all to worry about, either, lane, it's just something that made me want to hurl something. but i didn't. sorry, i'm in such a hurry I'm not even capping when I should.
okay, everyone have a great day! bye! ag & flf, you put so well. bye!

  61. I totally agree with your post Bearding.

As much as I think someone has to be first and change things by coming out, I understand why no one wants to take that risk. But I see absolutely no reason for the over-the-top bearding we get from Jake, or why he couldn't just be seen out with female friends and let people think what they want, without all the hand-holding, magazine covers, they're so in love nonsense, and dragging in poor innocent kids to boot.

This reminds me, I agree with M that in that one clip Austin was not saying that he was doing the Lincoln Booth movie for the girls. Quite the opposite. What I couldn't decide is if it was a planned question and they were trying to make fun of the fact that questions like that always get asked, or if Hilarie asked him an unexpected question just to see how he would answer.

I don't know if Austin is out to everyone, but I think he is with friends, so I'd say Hilarie probably knows he's not straight, but whether she knows anything about Jake is a different issue. I'm pretty confident she knows the gossip since she made a reference to Austin and gossip, plus the disappearing on weekends.
