Out Spotlight LXXXvI

Today's Out Spotlight is DiginityUSA. DignityUSA is the oldest and largest national lay movement of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Catholics, families, and friends. Dignity Canada represent LGBT Catholics in Canada. A similar organization is in the UK and is known as Quest.

"DignityUSA envisions and works for a time when Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Catholics are affirmed and experience dignity through the integration of their spirituality with their sexuality, and as beloved persons of God participate fully in all aspects of life within the Church and Society."

Dignity was first a counseling group and then a support group in Los Angeles, . in 1969, by Father Patrick X. Nidorf, O.S.A., an Augustinian priest and psychologist, started a ministry for gay and lesbian Catholics as an extension of his professional work. He would later describe the beginnings of Dignity in his own words as follows:

"The Catholic gay people whom I had met were frequently bothered by ethical problems and identity with the Church. It seemed obvious that the Church wasn't meeting the needs of the gay community. In counseling gay Catholics, there always seemed to be an excessive and unreal problem of guilt that was sometimes reinforced in the confessional instead of being resolved. With these ideas rattling around in my brain, I wrote a paper on a proposed group for Catholic gays and presented it to our members at a Provincial meeting. Most of the priests seemed to favor the idea of forming such a group and I did."

Word of the new ministry spreads first by word of mouth and later he placed advertisements in the Los Angeles Free Press asking people to contact him in San Diego for discussion and possible meetings. Not wanting religious fanatics or homophobes to disrupt or dominate the meetings, he required the return of a completed application form (and when in doubt a personal interview). He charged $5 a year for participation and required that all be 21 years of age and have a membership card, which he issued. The monthly gatherings are closed to anyone else. After several meetings were held in San Diego and alternately in Los Angeles (because that's where the majority of respondents to the ads live), Father Pat decided to have all gatherings in Los Angeles where the sessions are held in private homes. Father Pat writes and distributes a kind of information letter to members giving the date and location of the next meeting. (The earliest issue of this newsletter on file at the International Gay Lesbian Archives in Los Angeles is dated February, 1970.) He later noted that "the name Dignity just came to me as appropriate since one of our basic goals was to bring dignity into the spiritual and social lives of some very special people." DignityUSA has been a national organization since 1973

Dignity believes in the following tenets:

That gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Catholics in our diversity are members of Christ's mystical body, numbered among the People of God.
That gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons can express their sexuality in a manner that is consonant with Christ's teaching.

And are organized to unite gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Catholics, as well as our families, friends and loved ones in order to develop leadership, and be an instrument through which we may be heard by and promote reform in the Church. And believe to be such, accept responsibilities to the Church, to our Catholic heritage, to society, and to individual gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Catholics.

Because of their opposition to official Catholic teaching that homosexual acts are "acts of grave depravity", neither DignityUSA nor Dignity Canada are recognized entities within the Catholic Church. They are prohibited from the use of Catholic Church properties and from advertising in Catholic Church publications. Dignity does however attempt dialogue with Bishops of the Church, and as an organization, they are tolerated by many in the Church, although rejected by others.

Last year on the official visit to the U.S., Pope Benedict XVI was greeted by the Diginity Washington Group on his visit to Washington DC. Papers reported that he wave to the group as he passed.

DignityUSA is the largest and most progressive group of gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual Catholics. This year they will be celebrating 40 years of community and spiritual support for LGBT Catholics at their 2009 convention, July 2 through July 5th in San Francisco.

  1. Dignity has a large group in Philadelphia and I have attended many of their events. My friend Joe has been involved with Dignity for many years and has served as an officer.

What is cool about Dignity is that the parents and families of many memebers are very much involved.

Dignity is not not reckonized or sopported by the Catholic church. The Catholic church used to sponsor a Catholic Gay orginization but that group dissolved when the Church said that the members must be celibate.

  5. Why not just become a member at an Episcopal church? Catholic guilt just isn't healthy. I think what they are doing is admirable but I would just go find a place where I was truly accepted.

  8. Wow, quiet it is indeed. Not just here but all the Jake sites. Even I stopped looking at Eyelashes a few weeks ago. I just go to DC Forum for the slash links now and nothing else. Oh, the biweekly newsletter. That is always interesting.

As usual, good info on the spotlight. Very inspirational.

From yesterday - I think PR had viewed twitter as the answer to all their problems. No more dragging Reeke out to be seen together every 2 weeks, no more advance calls to make sure they looked like they dressed within 50 miles of each other. No more coaching Jake how not to look bored, disinterested, sullen or worse yet, dumbstruck by lust when an occasional hot male wandered into his field of vision. Just create the scenarios via twitter and let the romance proceed. Too bad no one believes their twitters.

Many of these Twitters and blog sightings read credible to me. I think Jake has been in DC since the weekend.

And I could quote other posts too, but I'm sure you'll continue to conveniently dismiss or outright ignore any opinion that doesn't fit into your worldview. Just as you'll embrace a theory, no matter how stupid or devoid of evidence it is, if it supports your beliefs. The fact that you continue to parrot the line that PR set up those twitter accounts despite the repeated failure of anyone to bring forth any evidence that they are PR generated speaks volumes.

If you do not like what you obviously feeled is the complete denial of the folks who question Reese and Jake's relationship, (not that I myself am questioning that a oscar winning actress and a oscar nominated actor could fake anything), why do you frequent this blog or bother to defend something that you believe is real? I believe Jake is straight and that Reese loves Jake well she loves the attention she gets from dating Jake. As long as Jake does not overshadow her.

  13. Puzzled, your post has nothing to do with the part of my post you quoted, so I don't know what you want me to say. I was talking about M ignoring opinions she disagrees with and how she (and others) have repeated an argument that has yet to be supported with any evidence.

  15. I feel Twitter has become the hottest thing on the internet. People are communicating with each other this way. Especially young people. No one can say with 100% accuracy if what someone is twitting is true or false. So there is no argument.

I do believe that PR will use Twitter. Like I said a few days ago the rag mags have zero interest in reeke. Right now Twitter and staged photo ops are the only way of bringing the lie to life.

I have never saw a reeke photo that has convinced me that reeke is real. If I do I will admit it.

Is there a way to verify a Twitter sighting, beyond any doubt or suspicion? What failsafes are in place to deal with false info going out there to cyberspacce? Or can anything be posted, anything at all regardless of copyright, slander laws, etc.? How do we recognize the truth without proof?

How about the Twit? Any way to prove that they are exactly where they say in text? Cell phones are mobile, designed that way. So is society, constantly in motion. If an account is opened by, say, a Oreganian, but they travel to Miami, will their entry register the PNW, or the Sunshine State?

What assurances are there for anything associated with the Twitting experience?

I think so too. But I just can't believe that all these Twitters are from PR. There is no way to be totally sure if any sighting on Twitter, a blog, LJ, etc. is real or false. You just have to read it and decide for yourself whether it reads credible or not.

  20. Sib,

Sorry I was acutally questioning why all the folks who come to this blog who do believe in Reese and Jake? It just seems to me that if they were true believers in "the love" that they would stay away from this blog. It just seems all the tweeter sightings are a little overkill to report to a blog that doesn't believe.

  21. I am still around! A long day at airports and one very bad computer but I am still kicking.

They must have mistaken me for another blonde that was heading to Philadelphia, as I was told to wait to board and a gate agent escorted me to a first class seat for the short flight to the City of Brotherly Love.

But arriving there, there wasn't much love for anyone heading back to Boston, with a delay for unknown reasons and a big plane with my special seat all the way, I mean all the way in the back of the so it was a late arrival with cab ride that hit delays due to night crews doing repairs.

No the computer is still on a bad bender, even after being rejoined to its power cord. Thankfully I have a back up. Finally remembered the password after many tries and few choice words, and got it connected. The suitcase is till full and sitting in the living room, but I am back online. Priorities Priorities. More in the morning - see you guys later.

  22. One Tweet-Deceiver Bonus Blind Vice!

Celebs aren't exactly known to be truth tellers — Toothy Tile continuously lying to himself and every ridiculous excuse Lindsay Lohan's made to get out of pretty much anything are proof enough of that. But Melinda Miscreant is another story. Dame's fibbing 'bout her own flesh 'n' blood, incredibly tacky.

Mel, who somehow still gets TV work despite peaking years ago, is as guilty of desiring followers on her Twitter page as every other Kutcher-like celeb with an online presence.

But that's not the truly heinous part. The despicable side of M.M.'s Internet persona is that she's totally painting a prettier pic of her motherly abilities, and the ones who are totally paying for it are her kids:

M.M. has gotten on enough people's nerves in her recent attention-seeking antics that she's doing whatever she can do to get her former fans to like her again. Instead of her sexuality (hasn't worked in a while), she's focusing on winning Mother of the Year—without really working for it.

Mel is known to tweet that she's at the park with her kids, when in actuality, she's really she's off tanning! So say totally tight M.M. sources who are with the babe while she deceptweets right in front of 'em! She'll totally update her status to say she's with her kids at, say, an ice cream parlor, when really she's at the spa, sans offspring. We're surprised she's putting this much effort into faux-mothering her kids instead of just schlepping them outside for a photo op. At least then your kids would actually see ya sometime.

And we thought the kids' father was the badly behaving one. Hardly. Certainly he has his own parenting problems, but at least he barely tweets a thing, let alone lies.

And It Ain't: Victoria Beckham, Nicole Richie, Demi Moore

    One Tweet-Deceiver Bonus Blind Vice!
