Historical Hanger

The shirts from Brokeback are now on display at the Autry National Center of the American West.

But how they got there is interesting. After Tom Gregory brought the iconic shirts for $101,100 on Ebay, they were hanging on his office wall. That was until Gregory Hinton called him on New Year's Eve.

“I was doing researching on ‘Night Rodeo,’ my fifth novel about my dad Kip (former editor of the Cody Enterprise) and wondered what happened to the shirts that were such an important prop in the film,” Hinton said. So he tracked down Gregory and proposed the idea to the Autry, along with the Gay Rodeo Legacy Project, which evolved into the symposium “Gay in the West: Reclaiming Our Country Heritage." The event will address the urban-rural bias, and will be this fall. The shirts will be at the Autry on lone for a year.

Gregory felt “the shirts hold deep meaning for so many, especially those 50 and older that could relate to the anguish and isolation of Ennis".

The Autry known for exploring all peoples of the American West, thought it was perfect for the museum . Jeffrey Richardson, assistant curator for film and popular culture, got involved and the project was pulled it together in six months.

The shirts are part of a re-installation of the Contemporary Westerns case that displays memorabilia and art from significant films since the 1970s, such as “Unforgiven” and “Tom Horn.”, “Wild Bill,” as well as gun belts and revolvers from the western comedy spoof “Three Amigos!”

Gregory's only request, that the shirts remain together and entertwined. “They have remained that way since the filmed wrapped and will always remain that way under my watch,”

Something this good has to be shared.

  1. I really loved this about the Brokeback shirts. Love the Western genre too. :)

PG, I live out in the country. Usually I hear my nextdoor neighbor's sons drumming, but the guitar was very apropos. There's even someone who plays the bagpipes down the street. It's a good thing I love music. :)

  3. Oh, today's post almost chokes me up. They have remained that way since the film wrapped and will always remain that way under my watch.

I'm not kidding; that about tears me up. I love that man.
To me, those shirts stand for so, so much more than just a movie.

Ennis' repression & self-denial apply to so many people of all sexualities and creeds. It's universal. But for Jack & Ennis, it was tragic and that tragedy is part of the sheer beauty of Annie P.'s story.

Brokeback Mountain will forever be my favorite movie. Of all time. I may not watch it now as often as I do say a holiday show or a comedy, but that's because it is so intense that I have to be in the mood to get all serious.

  4. Oh, you are out in the country. Cool! That is funny about hearing the drums and the bagpipes.

Let's see, what I hear when my windows are open: cars. the dogs upstairs. sirens. people's car stereos.

Man, just not the same. lol

  6. BBM will always be one of my favorite movies. To me, it showed
the true power of love. What a shame that Heath Ledger died so
young-what an actor he was! Don't
you agree with me-Jake was a lot
more popular in those days? Or is
that just my imagination? How Jake
has changed from the carefree friendly actor he used to be. Now
he seems to be more reserved. I
just saw the pictures of Austin on
Spooky's site and he looks really
great even in just a casual shirt
and jeans! I still say he would have made a good model or did he ever do professional modeling?

  7. The blue shirt and faded jeans look amazing on Austin. :)

  8. I'm telling you, those pictures are just splendid.

You are right, Kacie. Just simple casual clothes do the job, don't they?

Whew, I laid down to take the ol' snooze and whew! Now my head is all fuzzy and the rest of the afternoon is gone.

  9. Oh my god. Austin looks so good. The jeans, the hair, the smile, the way he is standing. He just keeps getting better. We'll see lots more of him soon. I'm guessing he will be on every episode of OTH now that he is a regular.

Very brief Toothy mention by Ted today. "Dear Ted:
In the middle of this Twilight mania, how does Toothy Tile cope with being dumped and replaced by a hotter man like Rob? Does he just deal with it with more photo ops with the beard to stay relevant?
    —Linda

    Dear Prince Tile:
Oh, I'm sure Toothy has a secret copy of Twilight stashed in his pad. And that's to gawk at R.Pattz, not K.Stew. "

  10. Dear Ted:
When I saw the headline in your latest Bitch-Back! I got so excited! When did Jake G. start to suck? I thought finally we get some real answers! Such a tease, Ted.

    Dear Double Entendre:
What exactly are you getting at?

  11. M - yeah it is the stance that is the killer that and tiny tiny peek of skin.

That stance is a just a check me out one.

It reminds me of what Jake did as Jack when he met Ennis with for the first time. I don't think Ang had to give him direction for that scene.

  12. Yes Jack/Jake sure knew how to drape himself along a car. Two scenes really. The first when he drives up to the trailer and again when he is waiting for Ennis to come down from grabbing some clothes in the Laundromat apartment after their night in the motel. Hot.

  13. I told spooky that those pictures of Austin were causing a real thick cloud of estrogen to hang over these two websites. lol!!

So it sounds like that first picture is about everyone's favorite? I know it is mine. All that leg. The lowriding jeans. The tiny glimpse of ab, like Special said. The simple navy shirt.
    Man.

Okay, well, on those thoughts, I think I'll be off to write! I've been gone all evening. Willie Wonka is on the Family Channel again. I love that movie.

    Violet! You're turning violet, Violet!

    LOLLLL!

  14. I forgot to say something. This morning, Tom & I were talking about the chain around Austin's neck in these and some other recent pictures. Don't know what is on the end of it - I was thinking I had seen earlier a lightning bolt or animal tooth shape thing or something rectangular.

Anyway, it made me think about Jake wearing his for awhile whenever he wasn't Reeking and then a few times even when he was on the clock. Then, of course they disappeared.

So, if all the talk about the necklaces, of which I am so sorely a prime one to blame (sorry, guys!!) did probably cause him to be told to ditch them, it would be hard for me to come down on him for that. Because he did wear them for awhile, hidden of course, never out. And that was a lovely gesture. I admire & love his wanting to wear them the way he was. And to have to stop that, well, I don't know. It's not his fault the ring was showing through the gap in his shirt, darnit!

Course, I would tell I.M. and the bosses to forget it, "I'm wearing them anyway! Get over it!". But then, that's just me.

  15. PR Girl. I love catching the guys and letting them know people are watching. Tells you more about what is going on when something is noticed and then you see it gone.
It was a little miracle that ring sneaked through Jakes shirt. The man needs to wear an undershirt when he is dressed up like that?

  16. Seeing those rings around Jakes and Austins neck around the same time almost make me certain they are or were in a committed relationship and may have had a committment ceremony or maybe even married.

  17. Ring-showing-thru-Jake's-tee-and-between-dress-shirt-buttons discussion with detailed pics here and at WFT a couple months ago, then the ring disappears? Proof that PR, Jake, Austin, Reese, Reeke buddies (take your pick) are reading here.

  18. Anyone got a link to the pics with the rings :D

  19. Anyone got a link to the pics with the rings

    Of course!

    Ring 1

    Ring 2

Ring 1 + 2 was taken on an extremely windy and electricity-static-cling day in LA (Santa Ana Winds). The circular shape outline screams "wedding-band-type" ring IMO (and others).

Ring 3 (closeup at LACC awards 2008 pic when he was walking thru park on crutches)

Some people argue that Ring 3 isn't a band but a decorative pendant but considering the size of the object, the angle of the highlights because a band on a chain doesn't lie flat (it turns), the fact that Jake and the ring was in a state of movement and the pic has a double shadow of the object which throws off the circular shape, IMO it is a band. Also: it's gold (admittedly a small point!) but a much bigger point is it's on a very long chain, at the pec cleavage which is unusual for a man but a perfect length for keeping it out of the way and hidden.

  20. How about posting the pics of Austin where you cans see what was at the end of his neckalaces. I think he posted a pic of himself when in Italy with a girl in a hat, he was shirtless and he is wearing a gold or silver chain and a leather chain. Looks like two pendants, I think it's on the Southern Gothic site.

I was surprised that it wasn't mentioned here at the time since there was so much curiosity and in this case you can mostly see it.

  22. How's the collection for the banner going? Need a donation?? Help in alerting the media???

    LOL!!!

  23. Unbelievable. The photos of the rings are great. I have never seen the one of Jake with the black shirt up close like that before. Espeically the second shot.

I am def. in for the banner. Who wants to collect. I would love to see that banner flying up and back the coast of Malibu or MV in August. I ll collect.

  24. Thanks for posting the pics of Austin. I can see the pendants, definately not wearing the ring like the one in 2007.

Climb off it tommy, you saw that shot before. Any comments on the picture of Austin when he was in Italy?

$$$ already collected tommy, it was your idea!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Um, tommy are you in denial again??? I hope you sre not referring to Jake as hot, he hasn't been hot in ages.

What are the meaning of the pendants Austin is wearing in those pics and why wasn't he wearing the ring from 2007? In the recent fan pics do you think he was wearing the pendants or a ring?
