Acting, Directing, and Architecture?

Sorry for a clip and paste Saturday. Promise it will be made up for.

Here is the newest interview with Mr. Nichols.

Austin Nichols talks 'One Tree Hill', movies, and architecture!

2009 has been quite a year for Austin Nichols. He became a series regular on the popular long-time drama 'One Tree Hill', began work on a new film, and even developed some additional career aspirations for himself outside of the entertainment industry. He discussed that and much more with me including what he would like to see happen with his role of Julian on 'One Tree Hill'.

Q-How has filming been for you lately?

A-Fun, it's been busy. I'm shooting a movie as well right now so I've been in between LA and Wilmington a lot. The movie is called 'Beautiful Boy', it's with Michael Sheen. It's just an incredible piece of writing about a husband and wife who find out their son was involved in a campus shooting. I play a writer who writes about the tragedy. I'm really happy about it.

Q-This is your first full season on 'One Tree Hill', how has that been like for you?

A-It's great. It's exciting. It's different from being a guest. You feel more responsible for the show as a whole, for the final in product, as a regular. But it's been fun. As far as I can tell, this season there has been really great material and better than any season before it so it's been really cool.

Q-Had you ever seen the show before joining it?

A-No I hadn't. I really didn't watch that much television and I think the show had a certain audience, younger. But I think the audience is actually growing now. The show is kind of older and more mature and not just limited to a young audience anymore. My parents and all my friends now are watching the show and they are in love with it, and telling all their friends to watch it. So that's been cool. It's been cool to see that sort of a reaction to a show that's been on for that long. And to see that kind of an audience grow and branch out. And people love to see stuff they can relate to. There's heart in it. It's real stuff.

Q-Why do you think the Julian and Brooke relationship and storyline has stood out so much?

A-For some reason there's this it factor. When Brooke and Julian, and Sophia and I get together there's just a great chemistry that happens. There's just this really great energy there when we work together.

Q-In the most recent episode, Julian said he's not sure if he will ever be ready for kids, what do you think about that? Would you like to see Julian as a dad?

A-Yeah I absolutely would. I think it would be fun to explore as an actor and go through sort of what that's like. I think any guy at Julian's age is grappling with the same thing because when you get out of college having a few years of what you're going to with your life and ....then all of a sudden you get to a certain age and you're like, wow, I can't party like I used to, and I need to exercise and I need to get my professional life going or wow, she's a great woman, maybe I should marry her. You know all these questions start coming up at that age. It's been really cool to explore that. But yeah I think Julian wants to have children, I think he's just scared because as a man you want to be ready for those things. You want to have enough money, and you want to have a place for them to grow up healthy and you want to be able to support them and put them through college and so you don't want to dive into having kids being unprepared.

Q-Julian has been working with more of the other cast members lately. How was it to shoot the camping scene with the James, Antwon and Lee?

A-It was great. I remember having a talk with the writers and Mark Schwahn, and saying look I mean Julian isn't really interacting with anybody but Brooke and now he's a big part of the One Tree Hill world and let's get him out there and involved with everybody. And so it was nice. I got a lot of emails and text messages from family and friends saying it was so cool to see you working with other people. It was like a new view point.

Q-Julian can be funny guy but he can also be very serious at times, how do you prepare for those more serious and emotional scenes? Do you have a special technique?

A-I don't know, it's weird. Working on 'One Tree Hill' has been very different from anything else I've ever worked on. I feel like in the past I was used to building up a character from scratch who's nothing like me, where now for the first time in my life I feel like I'm playing someone who's a lot like me. It's fun and interesting and when serious stuff comes up, I just sort of stick to personal things and there's somethings I have, little triggers, you know every actor has their triggers and I'll go use those things.

Q-Where would you like to see Julian and Brooke end up when 'One Tree Hill' is over?

A-You know it's interesting because on a TV show you don't know what's happening next, as opposed to a film. When Mark asked me to come back as a series regular I told him I only would if we could make a really powerful love story for Brooke and Julian. I wanted him to give them the greatest love story. I mentioned 'The Notebook' to him. I wanted him to give them that kind of love and story, a fountainhead love. And in 'The Notebook' even when they fight, it's how it is now for Brooke and Julian, it's fun to watch them fight. It's sexy. It's inspiring. That's what I told him I wanted. And he agreed. Even when they're apart, it's still interesting. So definitely in the end I want them to have the greatest happy ending ever.

Q-Was he leaning towards something else for them initially?

A-If he was, he didn't tell me. He just asked me what I thought and then he just agreed with everything I said about them. He was very happy to write to them that kind of a love story. I think because it worked in season six, he knew it could continue. When something works, it's great. It's been fun.

Q-Some of your co-stars have gone in the direction of directing? Is that something you would like to do someday or are you just content in front of the camera?

A-I absolutely do. Lately I've been shadowing directors and going to production meetings. I've done everything as a shadow in that area. I wanted to let them know that I wanted to direct. I was just sneaky about it. I just don't want to leave North Carolina and not have it happen. So hopefully it will happen soon.

Q-If you weren't acting what do you think you'd be doing?

A-Oh that would change every week for me. Sometimes I get into different things. At one point in my life I wanted to be a golfer. I used to golf when I was young. Also I wanted to be a professional water skier. Then I wanted to be a sports announcer.

Also I've really been interested in architecture lately. I really want to buy a house and fix it up. There's this incredible artist out there that inspires me, Donald Judd. All of his work is in Marfa, TX. It's a really small town that has kept his work and the buildings that he owned all around it. The town now is really influenced by his style and it's great. I was there to check out recently with some friends and it was amazing.

Q-If you could go back in time and spend a day in the life of one person who would it be?

A-It would be Donald Judd I have to say. Just to see what his head was like, by his ideas and uncompromising. When I saw his old space in Marfa, everything was left perfectly the same. Nothing was moved and I can imagine it would have been difficult to live with him. I just would like to see what that was like.

Q-Are there any updates concerning your work with Southern Gothic Productions?

A-Yeah absolutely. There's an incredible script called The Pedestrian. We're trying to make it into a movie. It's one of the best scripts I've ever read so I'm definitely gonna do everything I can to make it happen.

  1. As ever, Austin sounds like the perfect catch to me. Interesting, cultured, intellegent (and very sexy). Whoever he's with, Jake, Sophia, ANother, is a very lucky person. Nice to hear his working on other projects as well.

(hope the baking went well Special)

  4. Home from the fair and now off to pass out. Got 4 batches of brownies, 1 batch of lemon squares and 1 raspberry crumb bars made, and cooked up the base for my corn chowder while I was finishing up crafts and matting photographs. Only mishap was the smoke dector going off at 5am while I was rendering the bacon. Running around the house throwing open windows and dragging out a fan to disperse the heat that sets it off. My neighbor probably wants to kill me.

I agree Meg Austin is interesting cultured and intelligent you can see how Jake could fall for him when they first met.

  5. Interesting that Austin is filming a movie and this is the first we hear of it. That is one of the reasons I think he and Jake are still together. They can travel, film and do stuff and no word leaks out unless they want it to. I'm already on record about not being as excited about OTH scripts and story line as he appears to be, but then what else can he say while he is on the show.

  6. Thanks Spesh, interesting to read what Austin's up to now as well as OTH!

  7. ng, of course you fit in. Heck, I don't fit in but they let me hang out anyway, lol. There is no such, absolutely no such thing as fitting in or not fitting in. Only those who come to hate and fling personal insults are misfits, I am sorry to say. And that part is unfortunate but who wants that kind of company?

You, on the other hand, you are always, always a joy to see. I love how you bring different things to the table. I have never heard of this couple you brought up. I just was in the dark, as I usually am. But I think it's great that you come here. And thanks so much for your good wishes and condolences on my dad.

I have been gone, ng, for a bit of awhile. I had a real brick kind of hit me almost a week after my dad died. I thought I was doing okay but then after everything had died down and I started having alot of time to think to myself, like riding alone in my car to work, I started realizing that my dad wasn't ever coming back on this earth, anyway. I told some people that it was like I thought he was on this vacation and was going to be coming back any day. But he didn't. And he's not. And let me tell you, I started bawling all the time and then that's about when the trolling started and thus, pffft, I had to go into my batcave and disappear for awhile.

But I'm doing better and it's not all gone but I think I'm better equipped now to handle the trolling again. I wasn't before.

So ng, (if you're still with me after that long spiel, lol), please don't leave with any sad/hard feelings or don't close the door even. Always, always feel free to pop in here. I do hope we see you again. There are no members. There isn't an "in" crowd or an "out" crowd. These are just people. People talking. That's all.

    Love you, ng

  9. London!!!!! Megggggg!

    Great to see you guys.
I have to tell everyone that I got to talk to Seaweed the other evening on the phone, didn't I Seaweed?

What fun. And now I'm going to kind of disappear because I'm going to try to call Tommy Boy again. We talked earlier when I was in the car with my sister & mom as we were on our way to the airport to pu my aunt who lives in Vegas. She is my mom's sister and she is coming to stay with my mom for awhile. She's great & we're so glad she's here. She couldn't be here for the funeral and stuff because her son was getting married that same weekend. But now she's here and we're all going to have alot of fun. Anyway, off subject again. Anyway, my phone was about to die and started beeping so I had to tell Tom I'd call back so now I am going to do that.

I miss Austin on that SoGo blog more than I thought I was. I didn't always get the poetry, but at least that was really him. So it was cool to see what he had to say.

Okay, well, better stop yakking and do what I said I was going to do. Special, did you guys have a good first day? My sister & I went to a little town today that had this holiday mart. You know, where they have dealers from Pampered Chef, Tupperware, all that kind of stuff? Tastefully Simple? Has anyone tried Tastefully Simple stuff? Their stuff is good. And Pampered Chef.
Their stuff is made very well.

ok, I need to go. I will talk to you all later.

I'm not proofing this so all mistakes are mine. This is un-beta'd.

    One more thing, lol.

sienna, that topic you brought up the other day, that was excellent. The one where everyone was talking about what they liked in their slash or fiction? You all should go check that conversation out. On second thought, maybe don't because then you'll see my comments. LOLLLLL! TURNS BRIGHT RED!! No, don't go see! snicker!

Anyway, that was an excellent idea and it was really insightful. I loved reading it. I need to go back and see what other people have said recently.

    Ok, that's it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. ((((smiley)))), love you, too. I was in a kind of dark place for awhile but not now. It's great to see you.

ok, now I'm going to go call Tom. Watch, he was probably home but since I've been typing, he's probably stepped out the door, lol.

  12. Yeah, he's gone. lol. Sorry, tom!

One more thing and then I must return to my story.

There was a very nice person on WFT2 who was very supportive (sorry! I know, that's a really bad word in all of our's book, but it's the best one I can think of) and I'm sorry that I didn't get to respond to them. So if they see this, I have a big smothering hug for them and I want them to know that I appreciated their words over on WFT2 that day. Thank you very much.

  13. Glad to see you back on the post Prairiegirl, you really have been missed as :) said. I really enjoyed our talk the other night, do you think we did some major damage to your cell and thats why you had to cut Tom off???

Special, hope your fair went well and that you can take a breather soon and relax for a bit.

Austin's interviews always reveal a bit more about him and I still like what I'm hearing. I wonder what movie it is that he's working on right now?

    ReplyDelete
  14. ((PG)), glad to see you back, I've really missed you.

I've been out enjoying a beautiful, cool crisp fall day. Nice to come home and see some old "faces" and a new Austin interview.

Great to hear Austin is working on a movie, and it's nice that he's been able to work things so that he could do it while also doing OTH, I don't mind having less of Austin on the show if it means getting a movie.

And I'm relieved to see Austin is his old interesting, ambiguous self. The remark about finding a women and getting married can be interpreted as talking about himself or friends/people in general his age. And then we get him talking about being in Marfa with friends, rather than dropping Sophia's name, and making it clear it wasn't just the two of them.

And the bit about family and friends watching OTH i though was funny and sweet; I bet some of them are just happy to watch him in something that makes sense after JFC. :-D

    Breakfast for Sophia and Austin

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well, Austin had to go and be seen at breakfast so everyone will think he spent the night with Sophia. How appropriate that Austin got called James L. by X17, because when he does things like this, really, what does it matter who he is, he's just Sophia's arm-candy.

I really don't know why I bother anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Austy made Sophia carry my takeout order!

    ReplyDelete
  20. My breakfast-in-bed takeout order..which btw turned into a very late lunch for two. heh

  21. Robert, where were you? Man, what I wouldn't have given to see Robert & Austin instead, lol.

    1) I have to say Austin looks really, really good there in that vid. Although dead serious. Geez, he's given the pap his Jake bodyguard stare. I thought that was only for Jake!! Come on, Austin

    2) And I'm sorry, but Austin's bearding. Call it what you want now, yes, it does tie in that they're on a show together and they do need to promote the Julian/Brooke pairmanship.

But he is bearding. It's Sugar-Free, Low-Fat, Gluten-free bearding so far, but this is how Reeke started. Exactly how Reeke started.

Now, the thing is Sophia doesn't need to do this. And you're going to tell me that a girl who is as beautiful as her doesn't have a man? Maybe she's taking a break. So she has an easy escort and who better than a good friend and someone with whom she doesn't have to feel any pressure with.

Austin? He gets the hetero look. Plain and simple.

heavy sigh. Can you believe this? You got Jake possibly in Pittsburgh with his beard. And you've got Austin bearding all the way across the U.S. I thought Jake was supposed to be at some Brothers promo thing with Tobey M. this weekend?

I never seen such a screwed up situation. Honestly. The doormen where they live must ask to check J & A's i.d. when they enter the building to see which one is coming home. lol

Scenario 1: "Good evening, sir. May I see some I.D.? Ah yes, you have your shopping bags and latte with you; you must be Mr. Reese Witherspoon tonight. You have a good evening now, sir."

Scenario 2: "Ahhhh, here is Mr. Atticus, sir. Good evening. And we also have shopping bags and that's a very nice Mr. Rogers sweater you have on tonight. We must have Mr. Jake Gyllenhaal with us tonight. You have a nice evening, sir."

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, Seaweed, we did chew up my battery a little on that one, lol.

Destiny, I bet you are seeing some beautiful trees, too. We have had one of the most gorgeous falls I can ever remember. The trees & bushes have just been on fire. Alot of the leaves have now fallen but there are still some that are still turning. Must be johnny come lately trees.

  24. Bearding for a show like OTH is beyond pathetic. The only thing I can figure is Austin is looking to make a career out of mediocre soap prime-time soap operas.

I just don't get it, after all this time, and all the interesting work he is done, why does he think being Mr. Sophia Bush is going to get him what he wants. Sophia herself hasn't been able to move beyond OTH.

And bearding has done wonders for Jake's image, you'd think Austin would be smarter than that.

Wanda Sykes, with her hilarious, outrageous and edgy skit on her new show tonight about trying to recycle her dildos and other sex toys (!), has more balls than J&A put together will ever have.

  25. Hey X17. Austin worked really hard doing this bearding breakfast PR photo op. The least you can do is give him proper credit.

  26. Sophia's carrying something like a gift. The breakfast was most likely a work-related get-together. Stuff like that, you either go alone or show up with someone who's also invited. No biggie. I wouldn't call that "bearding."

    ReplyDelete
  27. Re-reading the Austin interview this morning. I would be interesting and seeing something under Austin's direction. I wonder how his aesthetic would translate.

The other thing I thought about, is what his co-stars would think if he got a chance to direct after just coming to OTH, after they have been there for 7 season and just got the chance this season.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I thought Jake was in LA for a Brothers thing too. Maybe its in the next couple of days, and he and Austin will overlap days in LA.

Watching the vid of Austin. I don't think Austin gets that protected vibe like he does with Jake, if you notice when the paps call out he step slightly away from her as to give them open berth to get a picture of Sophia without him in it, and there is enough distance between them to do so.

It does look like she is carrying some kind of a prezzie. Breakfast Birthday Brunch?

On a completely shallow note, Mr. Nichols that sweater sure does fit well. ; )

Has he discovered another advantage to cashmere? And who else like cashmere and wears v-necks?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Who thought the day would come. Austin and Sophia get x17 and reeke gets 2 tweets. God bless tweet.

    ReplyDelete
  30. lol, Tom.

I agree, Special, that sweater does look really nice on him. Like the color, too. One color guys don't wear too much of? green. My nephew loves green. He has since he was old enough to talk. He has more green clothes than you can shake a stick at. You play any kind of board game and his playpiece has to be green. Play a video game and his playperson has to be green. You name it. lol.

Trace, I hear you on the functionality of having a date to go to something with. No argument there. Especially if you're a celebrity.

But like I said, for me? Call it, paint it, sketch it, think of it, spin it however one needs to in one's head.

This is HW. And it's bearding. Because you're trying to project a relationship/outing/event beyond that which it really was. People can spin it about being "business" all they want. But how many times would I travel with a male co worker? Maybe once if our flights just happened to coincide. Anything beyond that and it's likely there's something else going on there. Parties? Charity events? Concerts? Breakfast? Shopping? Uh, let's see, that's been a bit of a start already right there.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'll have to go back & watch the whole video, Special; I must say I didn't finish watching the whole thing. I'll just go directly to x17.

lol. x17 - the official network of the beards.

Hey, good morning by the way. I need to go get ready.

  32. Definitely there was some type of party going on at that restaurant. It looks like Falstin and Sophia were expected.

As for poor Fake and reese they are left to hanging out at airport restaurants. I guess no one can stand them.

In the name of The Father and of The Son and The Holy Tweeter. Amen

    ReplyDelete
  33. I got to say Falstin is drop dead gorgeous. He is the kind of guy who will look good in anything and better with it off. Shame he cant act for squate.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Now for Fake. He doesnt really evenlook good anymore which is a real shame but I think he is a tad bit better actor than Falstin. Not much but a little better. My bet even though Fake doesnt want to be remembered for Jack Twist is that it will be his role of a lifetime. cant see anymore Oscar noms for him. Just not that good.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ok I am on a roll. The first thing I want to say is that there is no Baby Tile. Either Ted got that one wrong or out right lied. As for Fake and Falstins relationship I think they spend very little time together. They cant risk it. The first set of biking pics last year put that to an end. I very much think they are Gay as May and phony as a two dollar bill. To think how much I adored these two men now I see them as two phony cowards who have ZERO soul.Falstins interview was as phony and superficial as could
be. I would not spend two cents or give one second of my time to further their careers.

By the way doesnt Fakes PR know he shouldnt be hanging out with purple creatures. I loved the teabagging comments.
