Out Spotlight CVXXII

The Red Cross has been in the forefront in the current relief efforts for Haiti. There are Directors, Presidents, and Director Generals that oversee Red Cross programs for individual countries as well as the head of the International Red Cross.

Today's Out Spotlight highlights one of the many Director Generals that oversee and carry out the mission of the Red Cross.

Today's Out Spotlight is John Maurice Scott,Director General of the Fiji Red Cross.

Born in Suva, Fiji, in 1948, Scott was a fourth generation European Fijian. His father Sir Maurice Scott, was the first European Speaker of Parliament of Fiji. Scott was educated in Fiji and New Zealand and held a number of prominent public positions for various national, regional and international councils and programs.

He favored reading biographies, enjoyed entertaining, loved his wine with dinner, and was characterized by friends, colleagues, and acquaintances as "professional and competent," "compassionate," and someone with "a big heart."

He met his long time partner Greg Scrivener he was 31. Scrivener met Scott when he was 18 and moved to Fiji around 1990 to be with Scott, although he retained close ties with his family in his native New Zealand. Scrivener acted as a contact for his brother-in-law's swimwear company, but his real passion was plants. The couple's sprawling tropical garden at their home culminated in an orchid greenhouse. Friendly and easygoing, Scrivener frequently assisted Scott in his Red Cross activities.

Scott left a lucrative position at Fiji Shell Ltd to join the Red Cross in 1994 and played a key mediation role after George Speight seized the Fijian parliament on May 19, 2000 and took Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and his government hostage for 56 days. Scott was one of the few outsiders allowed into the building, daily delivering food, medicine, letters, and encouragement. He eventually was the person who oversaw their release.

During those trying days, Scott wrote in his journal, "I sensed clearly that my presence was initially considered to be very unwelcome. It would appear I was seen to be on the 'side' of the hostages.... Early on it was clear that the Red Cross neutral and impartial image was misunderstood on the inside."

He received a Red Cross award for his role in the hostage crisis during the coup d'état.

In the coup's wake, he became increasingly anxious and expressed fear for his life. Friends and family believe that while in the parliament Scott might have gleaned information implicating covert coup supporters among police, the military, cabinet ministers, and businessmen—information that could have created lethal enemies.

Scott hoped to avoid testifying in the impending trial out of concern that his testimony would compromise the Red Cross's neutrality. But an official investigating the coup, Inspector Waisea Tabalcau, confirmed in the ‘Fiji Times’ that Scott had been interviewed and might have been called as a state witness. Several days before his death, Scott was visited in his office by a man warning him not to testify.

Coinciding with the political unrest and Scott’s position in the public spotlight was the emergence of a nascent gay rights movement—and some disturbing signs of backlash. "Even before the coup they frequently mentioned being afraid of being woken up in the night and taken to jail for being gay," recounts Janice Giles, sister of his partner Gregory Scrivener. "They also said they did not trust Fiji police to protect them if they needed it. He and John were both afraid, particularly of police commissioner Isikia Savua, whom they described as 'hating them.' " Giles related an incident at a public gathering where Commissioner Savua had pointedly stated within hearing distance of Scott that "homosexuality is illegal in this country."

The penal code makes sex acts between men illegal, though the laws are rarely enforced; like the archaic British laws they were modeled on, they make no mention of sexual activity between women. In fact, Fiji’s constitution is one of only two in the world that protects gays and lesbians. (South Africa's is the other.) That happened in I998, when the Chaudhry government added a clause to section 38 of the bill of rights prohibiting discrimination based on race and sexual orientation.

Scott was also involved with others in the Fijian GLBT community in trying to restore Fiji's overthrown 1997 constitution and was among the members of the gay community that put forward submissions to keep the constitution because it protected GLBT rights.

On June 30, 2001 Scott was the Master of Ceremonies of the annual Red Cross ball held at Fiji's Queen Elizabeth Barracks is the culmination of the social calendar in Suva, the South Pacific nation's capital. Military leaders, government officials, tribal chiefs, and media celebrities ambled up the steps in tuxedos and evening gowns to attend the gala, co-hosted by the Fiji Red Cross and the commander of the Fiji military forces. Also present, though not as Scott’s escort, was his longtime partner, who had overseen much of the decor and flowers. As festivities wrapped up, Scott and Scrivener returned with friends to their elegant, art- filled home overlooking Suva's bay for an early morning breakfast party.

That next morning at around 9, their house boy entered their bedroom and found the horrific scene of Scott and Scrivener brutally murdered, they're hands and feet cut off and both beheaded. Terrified, he ran to the neighbors, who summoned the police. The murder weapon, a cane knife, was found nearby, along with discarded bloodstained clothing.

Fueling suspicions of assassination was the fact that the fingernails on one of Scrivener's hands had been yanked out. Fiji police countered by saying it's routine to remove nail clippings while collecting DNA evidence. A private autopsy was performed by a New Zealand coroner, confirmed that Scrivener was tortured, then beheaded as was Scott.

Scrivener’s other sister Judy Alvos, said the couple "had threats by phone before and during the coup, and Greg said their phone was tapped, and so they used E-mail instead. Greg even said that they may become refugees yet— hopefully in Paris—or they may just go out in body bags."

John Scott's memorial service was held in the National Gymnasium on July 11 and was attended by over 1,000 people, including his mother, brother, and son from his previous marriage, which dissolved eight years before meeting Scrivener. After a private ceremony in an Anglican church, he was laid to rest beside his grandparents. Though Scrivener was Scott's partner in life for 22 years, he was returned to his native New Zealand.

In an article that appeared in the Fiji Times on July 11, Graham Davis, a local journalist, wrote, "John Scott was gay.... He was in a loving relationship with his partner, Greg Scrivener.... But this wasn’t one of his imperfections—just the way he was. And Fiji needs to think long and hard about how it perceives such people. Homophobia is rampant in this country even though gays exist at the highest levels of society. Fiji is riddled with hypocrisy about a lot of things.... For such an ostensibly religious country, this had always been puzzling and never more so than in relation to same-sex relationships."

Scott's story has become the subject of a New Zealand documentary, An Island Calling. which is based on the book "Deep Beyond The Reef", written by his brother Owen Scott.

  1. Another fascinating--and sad--Spotlight. I'd like to see this documentary.

Thanks baby darling for the information about Bogarde and Lawrence, and the film reference. I think you are probably right about Ted's reference, which adds to the reasons Jake can't sleep.

PG, glad you're going to have internet access and not disappear on us for 3 weeks.

  2. Looks like the love is back for Jake at ONTD.

    ONTD

    Couple of the funnier comments,

One from someone asking why he broke up with Reese

    too incompatible--she lacked a penis.

Someone else said they were happy to see Jake lost the 90 pound blonde tumor.

Hopefully Jake and his people will take a lesson in this, and Reeke, and not beard again. It's not just the loss of the beard, but the fact that he looks so good and so happy.

  4. Trolls are trolling WFT, OMG and WFT2 since April 2006, telling JiG crowd what they should do, think, feel, what kind of fans they should be and what is OK to post about Jake.

Almost 4 years later no one cares what trolls think or want.

  5. This story was extremely sad to read. It tore at me and I can't even bear to think about what the last few hours of those guys' lives were like.

    How absolutely awful.

Thank you for putting it up, though, Special. The price some people have paid simply for being who they are.

Well, off to Mom's now for quality time!! You all have a great Sunday. The sun is out and it is absolutely gorgeous outside.

  6. I know Jake doesn't live for what I personally think. But he does live for having fans and being an A-list star, so you can bet your ass he and his people care what whether he has fans. And they have been largely missing since he took up with the General. But hey, if you think you and a few babblers who love him no matter what he does can make him a big star, knock yourself out. Was it UV or FL who saw Brothers five times--still wasn't enough to make it a hit.

    Gorgeous music today too.

  10. Guild honors Kathryn Bigelow as best director for 'The Hurt Locker'
It is the first Directors Guild of America win for the 58-year-old filmmaker and the first time a woman has won the award.
    By Susan King
    January 31, 2010

The Directors Guild of America on Saturday night named Kathryn Bigelow best director of 2009 for "The Hurt Locker."

Not only is it the first guild win for the 58-year-old filmmaker, it is the first time a woman has won the award.

"This is the most incredible moment of my life," Bigelow said.

"This is amazing. I'm so deeply stunned, honored and awed."

Bigelow already has received the majority of critics' awards this year for her work on the harrowing Iraq war drama, including those from the Los Angeles Film Critics, New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics.

In addition, she is nominated for the best director award by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

"The Hurt Locker" also received a BAFTA nomination for best picture, and won the Producers Guild of America's Darryl F. Zanuck producer of the year award last week.

The DGA Awards have become one of the most dependable forecasters for the Academy Awards -- the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the DGA have disagreed just six times in the last 61 years.

  15. Special's Out Spotlight is always interesting.

I love how the regulars say how sad it is, or how brave this gay person, or how tragic that story was...paying lip service to the gay community.

Then in the next breath they are trying to drag Jake kicking and screaming out of the closet they believe he is in. But they believe it is their right as fans to do this.

In reality, they are exactly the same as the biggoted homophobes that pop up in Special's spotlight.

    No.Difference.Whatsoever.

  16. The story of the life and death John Scott is very involved and layered. There is so much more that can't be covered in a spotlight. Especially into the investigation, the press, the politics and power involved and prosecution of the crime.

Congratulations to Kathryn Bigelow on her win at the DGA. I haven't seen The Hurt Locker but have read raving reviews.

I spend zero time going to other blogs trying convince anyone that Jake is Gay. So no there is no need for me to look in the mirror.
My attempt yesterday was to invite some intelligent conversation and to try and get sienna to give us a little more detail on the person who asked her to make the plea she did. Neither happened. I do not feel I am hurting Jake in any way.
Jakes career depends totally on his talent. So many actors have gay/bi rumors and are the biggest stars in the world. Cruise, Travolta, Spacey, Clooney, Will Smith, Leo etc. HELLO!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Only someone who thinks being gay is a bad thing thinks it is bad to say someone like Jake is gay.

I will never ever understand why people like Out Spotlight say that is homophobic behavior. The only thing I can come up with is that failing to come up with a rational basis for criticizing us, they resort to name-calling.

And yes, in a world in which people are dying for being gay because they have not been widely accepted, it is homophobic and wrong for stars to beard and push"straight is the only acceptable lifestyle" for all the world to see.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was looking at that movie Darling on Netflix, didn't realize it was directed by John Schlesinger, who was gay.

Made me also also wonder if Ted's reference wasn't also a reference to Jake and Austin, two closeted actors, being directed in TDAT by a gay man.

  22. Many believe Scott's murder was not solely because of his sexuality but also because of his involvement in the coup d'tat of the government. He saw many things being one of very outsiders who were allowed access inside the hostage situation. Many felt that he knew too much. That's not to say that his orientation did not play into his murder. Especially after the murder when they threw out salacious speculation and wild theories in the pressthat played in fears of what people think about homosexuality to the benefit the political situation at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It does sound like his knowledge was the main reason for his death Special, but I have to think his sexuality also played a role, maybe allowing however did it to further justify in their own minds what they were doing, or to think of him as somehow less human.

Also, my comment was a more general one. What people do have consequences, whether they like it or not.

For example, the Christian fundamentalists who have spent a lot of time in Uganda, and brought over so-called experts (really crackpots) to talk about how gay people can change if they want to, and how gays convert people, etc. That fed into the government in Uganda taking up legislation that would make being gay an offense punishable by death.

Not that I'm comparing bearding to preaching that gays can be made straight. Just that actions have consequences, and stars and athletes who beard make it that much harder for gays to be accepted in our culture.

  24. Destiny I saw Ted Haggard and his wife on Larry King Live when I was down in Florida. He says he has been cured of his homosexual desires because he went into therapy for a few months and remembered he was molested as a kid. He doesnt considered himself gay at all. It should be interesting to see what happens in his life. He has a very understanding and lovely wife. My feelings are they are both fooling themselves. We will see.

  26. I think they are fooling themselves too Tom. It's interesting the difference between fundamental Christians and really Orthodox Jews--the latter acknowledge that gay people cannot be changed, and that what you are trying to do is get them to be able to function in a straight relationship. Not that I think that is a good thing either....

I dont agree with the idea of descending upon GB. But I do think it is time to at least start thinking about deleting some of the nonsense that goes on. Of course that is 100% up to Special. It's about time Kathryn Bigelow got outed. Outed as an outstanding director that is. Hollywood shoves their gay actors in the closet - but female directors - gay or not - are thrown, bound and gagged, in the basement. Hollywood might be homophobic, but their hatred and repression of women in power is much, much worse.

  35. I saw the Michael Jackson dvd This Is It and I have to say that for not even being totally finished product, that thing was excellent. Excellent. Excellent.

What an unforgettable, unsurpassed talent he was. He glided across that floor like nobody's business. He moved like silk. And even during rehearsals, there were times his back up dancers were not being used and they would be down on the sidelines watching. And they would be whooping it up, waving their arms, cheering him on, all charged up just watching him. I don't get tired of hearing him sing his hits.

What a tragedy to have seen Kenny Ortega and all of the back ups work like crazy at this concert. It was going to be phenomenal. The special effects, the stage scenery they were going to use, the hard work that guy had his whole crew doing. I cannot imagine how devestated all of those people and Kenny Ortega must have been to lose him. They all seemed like a close crew and the short comments they had from so many of the dancers and musicians showed that they were all so honored.

I was really knocked out by it. Gosh, I loved his music and to watch him dance was just breathtaking and there will never be another talent like him.

Wow - Stevie Nicks singing with Taylor Swift. That's not going to happen every day. Elton John singing with Lady Gaga. I just love Stevie Nicks, always have. She looked great.

Cool to see Lionel Ritchie, too. It was like 80's night sometimes.

And one of my favorites, Carrie Underwood was on during the Michael Jackson tribute. She looked wonderful. That girl would look great in a paper bag, lol.

  36. Oh, and Jamie Foxx was on singing that song, I forget what it was called. You know, the one with the panda. I kept expecting Jake & Ron Howard to come up from the audience to join in but alas, they were nowhere to be seen. LOL.

  37. I've been having fun watching the Grammys too PG. I've particularly enjoyed Lady Gaga with Elton, Green Day, Stevie Nicks, my guilty pleasure Bon Jovi, and Leon Russell.

No Jake, RDJ introduced Jamie Foxx.

Like Tom, I don't believe in trolling other sites. I think trolling like that is wrong, and who really knows where some of the trolls are coming from, although I'm sure some of them are from GB or post there.

  38. Oh yeah, I forgot about Leon Russell. That was great to see him. And Alice Cooper. I missed Jon Bon Jovi.

I'm still upset with Allie McBeal for turning him down (Jon Bon Jovi). Was she nuts or what.

  39. The Grammys have been great and I have been caught up in them, it's a great night for music lovers. All the performances have been amazing.

Mary J. and Andre's performance for Haiti, Michael J's tribute, and Jeff Beck's tribute to Les Paul, (oh that made me weak, what can I say I love some good guitar)

Gotta laugh that more than half of Lil' Wayne was bleeped

For me here is about rising above and not stooping down.

People come here and try to stir things up looking for attention and to upset things. That's all they want. I know it is not popular when I say ignore them. But when they don't get attention they leave because there is no fun in staying if no one talks back to them.

Of course a few end up talking to themselves because they want to draw people into the fray. Many are recognized as those who have come many many times before and just can't stay away. There must be something good going on here and they're are afraid they are going to miss it, guess we really must know something.

Now back to finishing watching the tail end of the Grammy's

Wonder if Jake can blame it on the Goose this weekend. ; )

Hope everyone has a great week ahead.

Not that old line again Destiny, please. It's old news. It also seems to be your rationale for your relentless assault on someone you know only thru a gossip columnist and what's in your head. You also use this bs to justify your mean and and angry attitude towards someone you don't know. It's Wasted energy really.
Since you seem to for the betterment of Gay people why not use your energy wisely for people who are out and need help? Why not use it towards the gay teens and adults who need guidence and want help instead of your barrage of attacks on Jake because he's not living as YOU think he should.
