Out Spotlight CVXXIV

Today's Out Spotlight is Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas.

Gertrude Stein was born February 3, 1874 in Allegheny, PA was an American writer who became a catalyst in the development of modern art and literature. Throughout her lifetime, Stein also cultivated significant relationships with well-known members of the avant garde artistic and literary world.

Gertrude Stein, the youngest of a family of five children, was born to well-educated German-Jewish immigrant parents. Her father, Daniel Stein, was an executive with a railroad, whose prudent investm family wealthy. When she was three , the Steins moved from the Pittsburgh are first to Vienna and then to Paris because of her father's business. Her family returned to America in 1878, settling in Oakland, California, where she attended First Hebrew Congregation of Oakland's Sabbath school

Alice Babette Toklas was born in San Francisco into a middle-class Jewish family. She was educated at public schools and at the University of Seattle and the University of Washington. After the death of her mother, she returned to San Francisco to take care of her father and brother.

She was an idiosyncratic writer and collector of artists from Allegheny, Penn. She was a 29-year-old "spinster" from San Francisco. But when, Gertrude Stein met Alice B. Toklas in Paris, it was love at first sight.

Matisse had brought them together. In 1906, Alice had been taking care of her father and his house since her mother died, when they were visited by Gertrude's brother, Michael, and his wife. The San Francisco earthquake had caused extensive damage to the city, and the couple were visiting their properties. They brought along with them three of Matisse's paintings, including one of his wife that had a green stripe running down her face.

Alice was intrigued by the painting, as well as the stories theents in streetcar lines and real estate had made the Steins told of Paris. When a friend suggested that they return the visit next year, Alice agreed. The next year, they crossed North America by train and the Atlantic by boat, and there, in the Stein's residence in Paris, Alice was introduced to "a golden brown presence, burned by the Tuscan sun and with a golden glint in her warm brown hair." It was Gertrude, back from Italy.

Alice was entranced, with Gertrude's tan, but also with her voice, deep and full, "like a great contralto's, like two voices." Before she left, Gertrude asked, "You doing anything tomorrow?"

But the next day, Alice was late. She sent a note, but Gertrude was upset and made sure she knew it. "She was now a vengeful goddess and I was afraid. I did not know what had happened or what was going to happen. Nor, is it possible for me to tell about it now."

Once said spoke her piece, Gertrude's anger faded. "She stood in front of me and said, Now you understand. It is over. It is not too late to go for a walk. You can look at the pictures while I change my clothes."

Stein's life was marked by two primary relationships, the first with her brother Leo Stein, from 1874-1914, and the second with her partner Alice B. Toklas, from 1907 until her death in 1946.

Alice began to spend more time with Gertrude. She learned to type and to read her handwriting. She moved into Stein's apartment, she previous shared with her brother Leo, on the rue de Fleurus. Stein was working on the manuscript for "The Makings of Americans," her first major work. She cooked her meals on Sundays, the cook's day off. She would make American meals, such as chicken fricassee, corn bread, apple and lemon pies, turkey for Thanksgiving.

One day, Gertrude asked Alice to stop cooking and listen to something she had written. Alice did. It was a description of several people, and one of them she recognized was herself. It was an accurate portrait, but sometimes the truth hurts, and Alice felt hurt.

At the end, the Alice character met a genderless story teller and writer, who fell in love with her, and who loved listened to the Alice character:

"That one who was loving was almost always listening. That one who was loving was telling about being one then listening. That one being loving was then telling stories having a beginning and a middle and an ending."

Toklas was called "Pussy" by Gertrude and Gertrude was "Lovey" to Alice. Stein, was the soothing and listening partner; Alice called her a "strong-strong husband".

However, in A Movable Feast (1964), Hemingways's memoir of his years in Paris after World War I, he gives the impression that Toklas commanded Stein outside the saloon.

Stein wrote an erotic poem 'Lifting Belly,' to Toklas between 1915 and 1917 but it was not published in Stein's lifetime. At that time it was accepted that women shared homes, but physical relationship was something else. Another poem to Toklas, inspired by Cubism, was built around four sentences:

"Do you really think I would yes I would and"
"Do you real
ly think I could, yes I could",
"Do you really think I should yes I should",
and
"Do you really think I do love all you with all".

Other sides of the crystallike poem are left "unvisible" – perhaps including the verbs "must" and "ought".

During the their time together, they frequently exchanged love letters. Alice was an early riser, and Gertrude, who wrote late into the night, left her tender, passionate notes to cheer up her mornings.

"Baby precious Hubby worked and / loved his wifey, sweet sleepy wifey, / dear dainty wifey, baby precious sleep," Stein once rhymed.

Much of Gertrude Stein's fame was derived from a private modern art gallery she assembled, from 1904 to 1913, with her brother Leo. The collection quickly commanded a worldwide reputation; creating a salon, and a social circle of thinkers, writers and artists that developed around it, providing the inspiration for The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas
The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933), is actually Gertrude Stein's memoirs. It records Toklas's first-person observations of Stein's life and her friends, among them Ernest Hemingway, Sherwood Anderson, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque. The book appeared first in an abridged form in The Atlantic Monthly magazine. Stein's writing style is conversational and clear. Toklas notes how many wives of geniuses she had to sit with while Stein has been with their husbands. The book also tells of the trip Toklas and Stein made to philosopher Alfred North Whitehead's home in England and of their wartime involvement as ambulance drivers with the American Fund for the French Wounded. They also visited hospitals and were later decorated by the French government.

According to Estelle C. Jelinek, Toklas's presence as the narrator legitimized Stein's role as memoirist. Placing Toklas, the most important person in her intimate life, in the center of the autobiography, she could pay homage to their story. Toklas is the observing partner, not the directly observed, but at the same time Stein controls the picture she gives of herself: "There I went to see Mrs. Stein who had in the meantime returned to Paris, and there at her house I met Gertrude Stein. I was impressed by the coral brooch she wore.

The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook came out when Toklas was 77. It contained 300 recipes of such dishes Artichokes Stravinsky, Gigot de la Clinique and Breen Peas à la Goodwife. Many of the receipts are practical, if rather advanced. The book became famous because one recipe, Toklas's Haschich Fudge, originally given by a friend. It was not printed in the first American edition, but was included in the British edition. Toklas's close friends assured, that the writer herself had not tested the recipe, and she did not realize what the ingredients were.

Stein and Tolkas' last conversation in a Paris hospital has been much quoted:

"... What is the answer? I was silent. In that case, she said, what is the question"

After Stein died during surgery in 1946, Alice cherished Stein's reputation. In the end she found Catholicism, stating that she wanted a ticket into the afterlife, since she considered Gertude immortal – she would be reunited with her in Heaven. Toklas died in 1967. She was buried beside Stein in Le Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris.

Alice B. Toklas moved into Gertrude Stein's apartment on th
e rue de Fleurus, and for more than 30 years, they would live their beginning, middle and ending.

Reading some of the posts over at the OTH forum I can't help but think what a rotten, shameful thing it is for Austin and Sophia to lead their fans to think they're a real couple. Most of those fans over there are clearly teenagers (lots of mentions of school and school breaks).

I agree Destiny. I sometimes wonder if with all the lies and faking that goes on in HW if these people actually lose focus on what is real and what is fake. Again I know that Austin and Sophia go to this event every year but it is so tuff to take when u are stgarting to get ur hopes up. There have been some pretty positive comments from Ted. I hope we dont get fooled like we did before.

Could it be Ramona? Or BT?

  8. It's Ramona. Maggie and family may be stayingat a hotel now as per her Kimmel interview, but they are all still in L.A.

It's like that blogger that said that he was with his kid last year at that park in the UK when Ramona was there with Maggie and Peter.

Getty center? I don't think so.

  9. Austin looks as awkward in those photos as Jake used to with you know who. I view this as just the tail end of the Jake is straight campaign pre-POP. They need some hype for OTH as that show is on its last legs and we all know Jared is a PR conduit. Has Sophia been in anything else noteworthy? I have not checked IMDB, but I don't think so. Who knows where she will land her next job.

You would think that someone in the business knows Jake's niece vs. his own kid. I wish he had mentioned the gender. If he had said son, I would expect to see 1000 comments here.

Ramona really isn't on the radar and unless Mr. Edwards is combing sights looking for pics of Maggie and family, he would be pretty clueless.

It' Valentine's day, bet he is doing babysitting duties whiles sis and brother in law are spending the day together.

Do you actually think he would take his kid to touristy Getty center. If it's a secret, then would be one of the last place for an outing.

  12. Happy Valentine's Day to everyone.

Funny that sighting, because I was just coming here to talk about something I read about J.D. Salinger, as we know, one of the most famous recluses in the world up until his death. The New Yorker from a couple of weeks ago, which I was just reading, has a lot of short pieces from people who knew or were friends with him.

One writer talked about how much Salinger loved kids, and how he did all the "normal" things with his kids. In particular he talks about a letter Salinger wrote him complaining about having to suffer through conversations with other parents about school, etc., which he hated, while on the playground with his kids. He also took them on family vacations, like London, where they saw plays, and into NYC to Central Park.

A NYT article from Friday about Salinger mentioned him taking them to things like the dentist, too.

So, here we have someone who valued his privacy about all else, not letting it prevent him from giving his kids a normal life, including taking them out to play in public places.

All I can say is that I hope for the sake of BT they come out, because it is the only right thing to do, especially when BT starts school.

We got the scoop straight from Austin at Herve Leger by Max Azria show Feb. 14 in New York — and he hasn’t even told Sophia yet! The on and off-screen lovers will be checking out the hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages before grabbing a cozy dinner at Italian eatery Il Buco.

He gave them the name of the show AND the restaurant? For real?

Why don't they just take the pics themselves and spread them on the internet? Kinda like the pic of Sophia in Austin, TX.

Can't go somewhere and not have the pics to back it up, can we? That would be useless energy spent.

I was wondering why he put it there - and then it hit me: Face Book has a Twitter app. I wonder if he meant for the tweet to go only to his private Face Book friends, but the settings were wrong (his fault or Face Book's, they've been having big problems lately) and it accidentally went out to everyone.

  37. There are two gorgeous actresses with a similar look and of a similar age who are frequently up for the same part. A juicy role came along that both girls wanted. Actress A – who had previously worked with the film’s director – was approached early in the process, and was basically told that the role was hers.

The director then did a project with Actress B. He expected her to be professional but somewhat of an ice queen. Not only was he bowled over by how genuinely warm and friendly and funny she was to work with, but he was also thrilled to find that she garnered rave reviews from both male and female members of the cast (something that Actress A had failed to do). He asked Actress B if she would like the lead role in his new film.

To say that Actress A completely flipped out when she found out that the director decided to replace her with Actress B would be an understatement. There was some serious screaming, swearing, and crying involved. Well, at least Actress A is probably well stocked up on waterproof mascara. (Blind Gossip)

Actress A either has a cosmetics contract or she sells Mary Kary once a month at the Rose Bowl flea market. Because of that, Actress A could be Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon, Julia Roberts, MiserAlba, ScarJo, Jennifer Garner, Fishsticks Paltrow, Julianne Moore and every other actress who has at least 10 IMDB credits. Based on that shit, I"ll guess Reese Witherspoon and Katherine Hagel, because the latter recently replaced the former in a movie. And because I really want to see these two go at it in a cage. I'm sure Jakey Poo taught Reese how to rip an earring out and scratch at the eyes.

  38. Are straight French men normally really affectionate with each other? I was wondering because I saw something just now on the Olympics. It was two French cross country/target shooter skiers on the side of the course. One had #6 on his suit, I didn't get the number of the other one! Anyway they were about the same height, facing each other and they both put their heads down slightly and pressed their foreheads together and kind of wiggled them a little (for lack of a better description!) and at least one of them had their hands on the other's face/head. Then they broke apart and drew back and then suddenly did it again and nuzzled each other, and then wrapped their arms around each other in a really tight body-to-body hug.

I don't know if this might be typical French male behavior for all straights or gays, or a skier behavior (remember how Michael Phelps and other swimmers pat and rub each other's swim-capped heads), or if it was a gay couple. Did anyone else catch it? I'll try to see it again if gets rerunned.

Btw the cross country skiers are IMO the most gorgeous ones in these Olympics. I thought they'd be old geezers who couldn't hack downhill! Hot Damn they are far from it. And now these two French guys nuzzling each other has got me hooked.

  41. I found some info: Biathlon, #6 is Vincent Jay, age 24, France. He won the Gold Medal. But I still want to know if nuzzling like that is just a typical gesture! If it was his dad or brother then I would hope it's a common behavior in France. It might have been his coach he was with. Would 24 year old straight guys nuzzle their male coach?!

He's been to NY enough, bet he can find things to do while she hits her 4th 5th and 6th shows this week.

And then? And then? LOLLLL! Oh, that reminds me of that Dude, Where's My Car? And then????? LOL.

  53. I don't see what good it does for Austin to beard with Sophia. In seven years she hasn't been able to go from OTH to a film career, or be taken seriously by anyone. All of this for a mediocre role in a once not bad soap that has turned into one of the worst shows on tv this year--how man times is Sophia going to pout about her spineless boy toy.

And bearding worked so well for Jake's reputation! Well, at least it got him a role that paid him $7 million dollars.

Seems to me if Austin wants to whore himself out he'd be better off using the casting couch, at least that seems to lead to parts in films, if gossip is to be believed. Probably how he got TDAT.

  55. Also well groomed: One Tree Hill's Sophia Bush, who arrived in a very sparkly frock, leading her boyfriend (and co-star) Austin Nichols by the hand. "She looks great," we overheard him say to a reporter, and we're inclined to agree, although we feel less sure about his suspenders. Sophia got the best spot in celebrity row — right smack in the middle — and she certainly has earned it, as she's been to every Hervé Léger show ever, and a few of Max Azria's others to boot. For her part, Shantel seemed as far from cray-cray as a girl could possibly be — not to mention, she's a tall, gorgeous drink of water who was working a brave pair of leather pants. Shantel wasn't the only One Tree Hill actor in the house: Sophia Bush made a quick change out of her Herve Leger and into a DVF frock and took a seat in the front row between 90210's Shenae Grimes — who had on way too much makeup, and therefore managed to look about 38 years old — and Molly Sims, who is currently suffering from a vicious case of tanorexia. Sophia's boyfriend/co-star, Austin Nichols, was sadly forced to sit behind her, like an assistant, but he didn't seem too fussed by the snub. We didn't notice the OTH stars interacting at all, so we can only assume they're in some sort of blood feud, much like we apparently now have with Peaches.

I'm just trying to figure out how and where she changed her outfits. Did Austin have to drag the garment bags with him?

  60. Maybe I'm being too soft on Austin, but I've always seen this as bearding lite and also as a means of allowing Jake to ditch the chin, which was obviously causing him severe mental distress.

Austin and Sophia doing the odd bit of bearding gives both of them a bit of promotion. Sophia is obviously a very good friend of Austin's (and Jake's) and they're probably both enjoying fashion week (they have been there together before) and having a bit of a laugh together.

It's obviously in no way perfect, but in the run up to PoP and all the pressures that must go with that, a little (innocent?) Sophining is certainly preferable to the continuation of the horrors of Reeke.

  61. I used to see it as bearding lite, Meg, since that's how it started out as. I was calling it bearding lite when alot of people said it was just business.

He's hit the overdrive button in a matter of a month, dropped the pride over the bridge into the waters below, and soared past Reeke in the bearding density department.

That's an embarrassment of all embarrassments to be written up as "led by the hand" and "sadly forced to sit behind like an assistant". Exact same tone to the comments as Jake used to get for following Reese around like a puppy.

What is with these 2 guys? For gosh sakes, if you're going to beard, at least beard with someone who's going to treat you with respect and let you appear to be the big hip, hetero male that they want you to be.

What a Valentine's Day schedule. LOLLL! Yeah, romantic day my butt. They were on a schedule. Sophia had her pen in her mouth, imaginary slateboard in her grasp, tongue clicking like a Metro Train counter and dragging her "bf" (I love how that has to be explained in every single mention, LOL, like a theatre show program. "And now playing the part of the Boyfriend - Austin Nichols"
that's the big Valentine's Day plan.

Come on Austin, You are so better than this.

At this point, I don't know that this is so much for Jaustin, as this little show is all about OTH saving and miss Sophia. Because as it is increasingly becoming apparent, it's got to be all about Sophia. The girl is shining a new light, alot like.....hmmmmmmm.....alot like Brooke Davis.

  62. according to a comment on that site, Sophia isn't paid but gets free clothes.

Some of those names on the A list has me shaking my head. Does maggie and the rest really need $60,000?

  63. ITA with every single word you wrote in that last post PG. I will throw in one other thought. The fact that Austin is so going over the top like this, after Reeke, when I would have thought the boys learned their lesson, makes it that much worse.

And he's looking as whipped as his character. What makes this so Reeke-like and pathetic is most women do not drag their boyfriends to fashion shows.

  64. Like Austin's small checked shirt, but it didn't read well on film, it looks like it's moving.

Although he sat behind her for two of the three shows he always found someone to chat with.

    DVF show

    Rebecca Taylor show

  65. Sorry I'm still sticking up for Austin, maybe he's actually interested in fashion.

Can see PG's and Destiny's point though, however watching a few fashion shows and probably going to some excellent parties does not seem as appalling as all those endless coffee and matching gym outfit runs (don't you just shudder at the memory).

Hey, Sophia probably got Austin the job on OTH, so maybe part of the deal was that he accompany her to a few events. Just seems more friends helping friends out to me that the bearding crime of the century (especially as very few people know or care who Sophia or Austin actually are).

  66. I understand what you are saying Meg. And I would maybe agree if this weekend was not so over the top, with the very tabloidy "secret" about V Day plans--no real couple dopes that, unless deperate for attention. Probaby a hit with the teeny bopper fans, but I thought Austin had more ambition and sense than that.

  67. Interesting info on WFT2 about OTH and Austin's career.

  68. I don't think anyone is contracted past this season including Mark Schwahn, who is working on a new pilot for the network with Matt Bomer and Zach Quinto.

I think if OTH gets cancelled there is a good chance the CW could offer Austin a holding deal that would guarantee him his own show or to be cast in one of their current shows. Austin has quickly become very popular with OTH fans and they usually try to snatch up the new "hot guy" and lock them in to their network. Actors like Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Justin Hartley, etc all signed those deals that gave them their current shows.

  69. And probably Austin is interested in fashion (I'm not up on that history as far as he's concerned so I beg ignorance on that fact) and it's great that he's there.

But being described as being "led around" is just not...hey, unless times are a changing.

How wrapped up do we get in sexual stereotypes, anyway? Maybe this is the new millennium way. The ladies lead the men around. Hey, what do I know. Equal time, I guess.

Funny, though, Jake took all kinds of heat from most of us around here for being led around by you know who. I just don't get how this is any different.

And another funny thing is how when some of us were calling Jake out on being "led around", letting Reesey walk in the front in alot of their photo ops, that's when he put on the shining armor suit and started taking the lead.

I don't think that was any coincidence. Just another photo op PR correction, that's what that was.

Just my thoughts, though. Not arguing at all. Heck, I'm just so darned thrilled to see you here this morning, Meg!!!!

  70. Dear Ted:
Is Matt Bomer Toothy Tile? He's so sinful, I would gladly go to Hell.

    Dear White Collared:
While I agree the TV stud is super deelish, he's not tasty enough to be the legendary Tile. Nice guess though.

    Dear Ted:
So, what do you think of Perez Hilton's claim in an interview for a radio show that John Mayer is gay? Can't say I'd be surprised. OK, I'd be surprised if it weren't true. But Hilton isn't exactly the most...trustworthy of sources. Hard to put stock in someone who regularly "borrows" stories from other reporters' hard work (cough, cough, you) without recognition of where the info came from. Has one of your long-time Blind Vices finally come out?
    —Nik

    Dear Zipped Lips:
Trust me, babe, I keep all my Blind Vices super secret—as in, Toothy Tile's baby-style secret. As for the Perez poop? John unleashes his dirty sex on girls, I know that much.

    Dear Ted:
I was wondering now that Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams are both single, is there a chance they will hook up in the future? He's also the godfather of her daughter Matilda.

    Dear HA!:
    Don't count on it.

  71. I would love to see Austin get his own project/show. We know he can carry the weight of carrying a show as its star.

I really wish he would get to go with Milch again. There is something about David and his creativity that sparked Austin. It all clicked and some of the best acting we've ever seen from Austin came from that collaboration.
