Out Spotlight CVXXV

Today's Out Spotlight is singer and entertainer Frances Faye.

"I was born on Stone Avenue in Brownsville and I've been stoned ever since," quipped the wild Frances Faye in 1975. She was in fact born Frances Cohen on Stone Avenue in Brooklyn's Brownsville Section on November 4, 1912.

  1. I love this Spotlight. I've never heard of her (heard of the song she wrote for the Andrew Sisters). The clips are great too. All the "controversy" around her life and act is probably one of the reasons her name didn't become better known since she certainly has the singing chops and charisma.

  2. What a beautiful, awesome Out Spotlight. I look forward to it every Sunday, and this Sunday's is no exception. Fascinating. :) Like the song too.

Tom, so looking forward to this one. Apolo is a cutie.

  4. I was just checking out all of the photos over at Robert Buckley Daily. Really cute pictures of him signing autographs at the Wilmington charity event. Also tons of photos of him at Fashion Week. I guess having started out as a model and having attended for years he certainly got into a lot of shows, including a lot of the big men's shows, like Calvin Kline. Not a fair comparison to Austin, who probably couldn't get in to those shows, but the fact that he only tagged along with Sophia to some women's shows.....

And I just couldn't help notice the contrast between him and Austin--the way of dressing, no beard hanging on his arm (not that I saw over there anyway), looking confident, sexy.

  6. Really enjoyed reading the spotlight today. I've never heard of her but now I know. Interesting song - I'm not sure I was too wild about it though. All those names started driving me crazy, lol.

Had to clear off the deck for Curley. They have a heavy, metal shovel. Plastic's the way to go on that. Much lighter and they do just as good of a job. But at least we had one and mr. curley has 3 paths from which to choose from.

I saw those pictures, too, Destiny. Buckles was all over the place, wasn't he?

  12. Jake's in NY, stayed an hour at the party and Austin is not been seen or heard from this weekend. Hmmmm. Any bets who else in NYC?

Bet he's going to have lots more fun than last weekend.

  14. Let me understand this. Acoording to Spesh, Austin is still in Nyc. Jake, who's been itching to come out of the closet and live his life openly, instead decides to spend the day with his sister and the early part of the evening with Natalie and others. Meanwhile Austin is being hidden away like yesterday's trash. This sounds like one of two things: Austin is nowhere near NYC; or Jake has no intention of inching out of the closet. Ever.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Not still in NY. But he does come up for weekends in NY. We know he does disappear from Wilmy on weekends.

Maybe he came up. And no one said anything being hidden away. And there is more than one day in a weekend.

Making the most of their home field advantage, A Single Man’s Colin Firth and An Education’s Carey Mulligan won the lead-acting prizes over their American competition, Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep (Sandra Bullock wasn’t eligible since The Blind Side didn’t open in the UK in time).

  17. Thanks for the BAFTA winners.

Would love to see Kathryn Bigelow take the Oscar too. Yes! Colin Firth winning for A Single Man and great job Cary Mulligan. Think Monique going to sweep it all role for Precious.

Congrats Duncan! Great way them to go into Source Code.

  19. Glad you liked the Spotlight I found out about Frances Faye from Bruce Weber's documentary Chop Suey and thought this has to be a Spotlight. She is a great performer.

  20. Whenever Jake is in NYC for a weekend, I figure there's always a strong chance Austin can be there, too.

So funny to see Apollo on the Olympics. I'm so used to having seen him on Dancing With the Stars that it's so different to see him as a skater, lol. He's totally different in his interviews - alot more confident with Bob Costas than with Tom Bergeron.

  21. Wow - the first year I've been able to watch the BAFTA's and I enjoyed it thoroughly! Loved seeing Vanessa Redgrave receive her BAFTA fellowship from Prince William *swoon* and Uma Thurman. Duncan Jones is a sweetheart, I can't wait to hear more about his work on Source Code with Jake. And Christoph, A Single Man I can't wait to see, and An Education, I can't wait for. I missed it when it first came out. Carey Mulligan looked great. And congrats to Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal! :)

  22. I was too wrapped up in the Olympics to watch the BAFTAs. Sorry I missed Duncan Jones.

  23. I love music from the 40s and 50s like Faye's, so on top of the songs with all the lesbian overtones, I'm also glad to have a "new" artist to listen to.

  24. Just Jared & People.com confirm from Abbie Cornish's rep that her & Ryan P. have split. How long have we been hearing rumblings about this? On JJ, the rep says it was Abbie ending it.

And of course at the end of the post, JJ has to mention that it comes only a couple of months after Reese "pulled the plug" on her relationship with Jake. **sigh**. Yet another poke in the ashes of a fire that was never burning to begin with.

Now that one could affect Ava. I feel for those kids, you know? Bad enough their mom involves those kids in her fake relationship. But then their dad brings someone else into the family circle only to have that relationship go belly up and those kids have a revolving door of people coming in & out of their lives. Anyone who thinks kids slough this stuff off are mistaken.

I never have thought alot about all these HW relationships other than try to keep a current scorecard. Okay, who's seeing who now? Who just broke up? Who got married? Who is finis? But when you follow something such as Reeke and you notice how often someone like Kate Hudson goes through "relationships" like Kleenex, I now begin to wonder how the children of these stars get any stability in their lives. The tell-all books these kids could probably tell.

  25. I started watching the Olympics, then I kept switching channels and ended up at the BAFTAS. It's a great song today. Great Spotlight. :)

  27. I did not watch the Baftas, but seeing the list of winners it seems they got the winners right.

    Great spotlight as always.

I'm guessing Jake will have at least another day or two off in NY since Duncan is in London. Plus his movie won at least 2 awards, so he will be celebrating a bit. Plenty of time for romping in the closet with Austin.

  30. Pics of Jake at event on IHJ. He looks kind of gruff and not very happy or congenial. I spot a necklace but it looks like the "chain" that's with dogtags and ceiling fans. Idk the name of those! Maybe it had a NY house key on it. He looks really tired and worn out but *ahem* maybe that's a good sign. And he only stayed for an hour!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Special is the sweater Jake's wearing like Austin's sweater? If anyone has pics to compare, you do!

  32. Nice pictures even if he is all serious. Almost cranky looking, lol.

Looks like his hair is going to have that shorn look again. It does look good on him.

Sooooo hard to get going this morning. My last week with Curley - I'm getting sad already. Chickened out on the Fry run yesterday. We just have enough now for a goodbye treat and I have to stop tonight on my way home. But the good thing is they're warm when I do that so the first dipping is always a really good one for him.

  33. I take that back. He just looks kind of serious to me.

Well, everyone have a good day today. I'm really wrestling with myself to get going. Another day in crazyland awaits.

  34. Would You Do...Jake and These Thighs?

Jake Gyllenhaal has us laughing, and this time it has nothing to do with Reese Witherspoon.

Jakey-poo (along with an equally comical Joe Jonas) makes a cameo in Vampire Weekend's latest music video and gets more than a few chuckles as an over-the-top and overly competitive tennis player.

Sporting super-short shorts (if we haven't told you lately, nice thighs, Gyllenhaal) and taking swigs from a flask full of booze, JG bumbles around the court mean-mugging his opponent and, we have to admit, we loved every second of it.

Is this his best work in recent years?

Probably. Jake's last few films (Zodiac, Rendition, and Brothers) have been so-so at best, and we're told—aside from JG's abs—his next flick Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time "sucks" according to those close to the film.

'Tho this isn't Jake's music video debut. He appeared in Jamie Foxx's "Blame It (On The Alcohol)" as a too-cool clubgoer alongside Forest Whitaker and Ron Howard, but his latest yuk actually got us to think about his career instead of his über-complicated "love life."

Jake is funny and he's got that boyish charm that works well with comedy. It's high time he stops pursuing every single dramatic role that crosses his path and chooses something that works.

Take a cue from James Franco and don't take yourself too seriously, doll-face! We could totally see JG pulling off some Pineapple Express-type movie. Hell, it got Franco a damn Golden Globe nomination.

So, how do you like your Gyllenhaal? Must say, we prefer this carefree post-Reese 'tude he's got going now. Don't you?

  35. Dear Ted:
What in the heck is up with Sophia Bush and Austin Nichols? I used to think she had taste and a bit of class, but that short red dress she wore at Fashion Week left almost nothing to the imagination and looked like it belonged in the red light district. And what is up with Austin Nichols? He not only looked a bit of a mess (was he hitting the tequila early?), he looked more like one of the girls on the fashion sidelines than a boyfriend.
    —Sydney

    Dear Bush Basher:
Call off the sting operation—Sophia has hardly been looking like a hooker lately. While the dress may have been mega-mini, she's a classy gal and compensated by covering up on top (that's practically chaste by Hollywood standards). As for Austin, well, I'm sure he enjoyed looking at all the pretty dresses.

    Dear Ted:
Assuming Toothy Tile ever comes out, will Grey Goose come out with him? Or will he stay in the closet and continue bearding?
    —A

    Dear Out of the Closet:
With the stress that he's been under about not living loud and proud, if Toothy ever finally breaks down the closet door he's pulling Grey out with him. G.G.'s career wouldn't be as affected by the outing as T.T.'s.

    Dear Ted:
Any updates on Butter Pussy? Is she any closer to coming out?
    —Cheering Her On

    Dear Extra Buttery:
A coming-out question that isn't about Toothy? Color me shocked! Miss Pussy isn't coming out at the moment, but that doesn't mean she's completely ruled the idea out.

  39. Not good to hear that PoP "sucks"--but not surprised either given how the avoided Comic Con (I don't think the Disney Expo is the same--probably full of people who think Disney can do not wwrong). Of course bad reviews often have no realtion to how a movie does--look at Transfmorers and Shutter Island.

Still think we might see Jake with a beard before PoP opens, if only so that he can say he was playing the game and trying to look straight so he won't get blamed if PoP fails.

Totally disagree with Ted about Zodaic. Love that movie, and it is very well regarded by critics, so I see it as a plus for his career.
