From the US Environmental Protection Agency.
The Earth's climate has changed many times during the planet's history, with events ranging from ice ages to long periods of warmth. Historically, natural factors such as volcanic eruptions, changes in the Earth's orbit, and the amount of energy released from the Sun have affected the Earth's climate. Beginning late in the 18th century, human activities associated with the Industrial Revolution have also changed the composition of the atmosphere and therefore very likely are influencing the Earth's climate.
For over the past 200 years, the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, and deforestation have caused the concentrations of heat-trapping "greenhouse gases" to increase significantly in our atmosphere. These gases prevent heat from escaping to space, somewhat like the glass panels of a greenhouse.
Greenhouse gases are necessary to life as we know it, because they keep the planet's surface warmer than it otherwise would be. But, as the concentrations of these gases continue to increase in the atmosphere, the Earth's temperature is climbing above past levels. According to NOAA and NASA data, the Earth's average surface temperature has increased by about 1.2 to 1.4ºF in the last 100 years. The eight warmest years on record (since 1850) have all occurred since 1998, with the warmest year being 2005. Most of the warming in recent decades is very likely the result of human activities. Other aspects of the climate are also changing such as rainfall patterns, snow and ice cover, and sea level.
If greenhouse gases continue to increase, climate models predict that the average temperature at the Earth's surface could increase from 3.2 to 7.2ºF above 1990 levels by the end of this century. Scientists are certain that human activities are changing the composition of the atmosphere, and that increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases will change the planet's climate. But they are not sure by how much it will change, at what rate it will change, or what the exact effects will be.Observed effects include sea level rise, shrinking glaciers, changes in the range and distribution of plants and animals, trees blooming earlier, lengthening of growing seasons, ice on rivers and lakes freezing later and breaking up earlier, and thawing of permafrost. Another key issue being studied is how societies and the Earth's environment will adapt to or cope with climate change.
What can you do to help?
Some things are:
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
Use water efficiently
Use green power
Change your light bulbs! There are now highly efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs)that last for years, they use a third of the energy of regular bulbs and actually produce more light.
Use public transportation, carpool or walk or bike
Make changes at your table! Go Organic. Eat locally grown food.Eat fruits and vegetables in season.( both saves transportation costs) Plant your own garden.

ReplyDeleteThe waste that really bothers me is at the office. We don't have recyling bins here, they claim they sort everything out when it gets carted away, but I don't believe that for a minute. People throw away food and other garbage in with the paper.
ReplyDeleteRealistically I can't do anything about the paper generated and tossed. However, I have taken in the past year to taking home anything I bring into the office for recyling. That includes the paper bags my food comes in, water and soda bottles, and any foil.
I recylce everything they will take, but in NYC, at least for now, they won't take most plastics, like yogurt containers. But they're working on changing that.
I do use the special lightbulbs, and try to keep lights off when not needed.
The one thing I am bad at is keeping all the appliances plugged in. It is just too difficult to re-program everything like the dvd recorder everytime I want something. Wish there was a way around that one.
Jake Gyllenhaal Shows off 'Action Figure' Bod in Prince
ReplyDeleteBut does Gyllenhaal really believe in fate? He just might. "I think there are signs all along the way throughout our life that tell us things that we can either pay attention to – or not," he says.
For what it's worth, I know I should believe in fate.
ReplyDeleteHello guys, this is my first time posting here. I've been checking the posts with great interest for a while and reading has aroused more and more questions than answers. I mean, I'd like to be able to contribute with my own opinions and I will as much and as soon as I can. But with the way I am, I need to make sure I won't bring something dull or redundant to the conversation first. so bear with me.
I'm not even a native speaker. I'm somewhere in the Third World. But I've loved Jake for a few years now -and now that I have internet at home (something that I've wished for for ages) I spend a fair amount of time learning more and more about him. I'm grateful that this community exists and that's another reason why I don't want to become a pain to you...
Last night I read this comment from one of you: "Jake is indeed a daring and, I believe, fundamentally candid person. He has already done many things that make me think he likes to drop breadcrumbs and expects that those paying attention will put the pieces together". I loved that, because in what I call "my humble experience" (you know, compared to yours maybe), I got that feeling myself.
I'd like to know more about a certain subject, tho, and I was hoping you could help me find my way. Regarding Jake's management: is there a part of this blog, a single post, anything -that I shouldn't miss? Some ABC I should check? Also, can anyone tell me
who this girl is?
Saw her in many of the interviews from WonderCon and I remembered seeing her in some pics from 2007 -but that's it.
I'm enthusiastic about Jake's future -in every sense. And the chance I feel given to join you here at this time makes me want to think there might be something like fate. ;-)
Thanks in advance for any tips you can share. I'll go back to the older posts and comments now -or else, I'll never really catch up. x
Thatis you walk through.
ReplyDeleteWelcome Walk Through the Fire. Is there a shorter name you wouldn't mind being called?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea who the woman is.
Regarding archives, I don't think there are any specific ones I could point you towards. I don't know that I would recommend reading all of them, or you may not find do anything else for what, the next month or so? :-D
I have also gone momentarily blank on the names of Jake's management.
Hi Walk Through Fire, and welcome.
ReplyDeleteNot sure who that person is next to Jake and wonder if it an pr assistant for the day while he was at Wondercon to assist him during the long day at WonderCon, or it was another person there on another panel. It seemed like everyone was doing one big press line at the same time.
I have always said that there are breadcrumbs and anvils when it comes to Jake. Jake has thrown breadcrumbs out for years and with a wink, like here's a hint if you know. The anvils are what they are selling to the public about Jake. And never subtle.
This was in today's Washington Post.
ReplyDeleteThe way Archie Comics artist-writer Dan Parent tells it, Riverdale High is getting ever more diverse.
...according to Parent, a new gay character will enroll at Riverdale later this year.
"The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books," Archie Comics honcho Jon Goldwater said in announcing the news.
"Betty or Veronica...or Kevin?":First gay character enrolls at Archie's Riverdale
Welcome walk through the fire.
ReplyDeleteThe girl you're talking about is indeed one of Jakes PR people.
She seems to have been working for him for quite a few years now, but definitely has been there way back during early Rendition promotion.
You only seem to see her with him when he's actively promoting something, apart from one set of pictures where he went shopping with her and another one of his agents during the promotion of either Rendition or Zodiac. So I think she's probably primarly there to make sure that people don't ask inappropriate questions and that no one hogs Jakes time for too long so the others can get a chance at an interview too.

ReplyDeleteThat's cool about the Archies, and rather timely given all the issues with proms.
ReplyDeleteWelcome Walk Though Fire. I lurked for over a year before I ever made a comment on any site and now you can't shut me up, though I limit my comments to this site primarily and WFT2 on occassion. Back when I became a Jake fan, right after BBM, I slogged through archives on most sites to get current but there has been way too much activity to attempt that now. Plus some of the sites closed or lost critical data - Ted still has not restored his Toothy archive. It won't take you long to fill in the blanks as discussions take place.
ReplyDeleteDay 4 (Captain’s Log):
ReplyDeletePulling my Henschel Deerstalker cap closer over my forehead, I casually strode behind a skyline camouflage of color-running candles and jars of Bubblegum Flavored Ragu Spaghetti Sauce – Limited Edition, keeping my ever watchful eye on the trio of Texas shoppers. We were at a Dollar Tree Store in Little Rock, Arkansas and while I was questioning the need for this stop, I was not going to argue. I glanced into my shopping cart which beheld a veritable treasure of dollar items of which I might need 5 years from now, needed 5 years ago, or would never need in my lifetime.
Right now, I was witnessing another important clue.
“How about this, guys? Think this bow will do?”
My subject: Austin Nichols had pulled a massive white bow from the wall adorned with gift bags, ribbon, tissue paper and wrapping paper.
“Big bow! Big bow!” the larger of the wee tots proclaimed.
“Big bow for Daddy, you are definitely right. Hmm. Maybe we oughta go with a color, ya think? Don’t want the bow to disappear now, do we? How about this? Blue’s Clues Blue, do you like it? Thumbs up?”
Wee clapping in Aisle 3.
Our subject: Austin Nichols returned the white bow to the wall and retained the bold blue. He inspected the bow closely, mumbling “Hmmmm…we’ll have to discard the sticky back to it. We don’t need any ow’ies to Daddy, now do we? That would ruin all kinds of birthday festivities. Okay, guys! We’re off; we have what we need. Now does anyone need to drop their kids off at the pool before we go?”
I hurried along to the checkout counter, banking on a delay at the wee lounge and now equipped with the knowledge that a One Tree Hill script was excess baggage and a blue bow a vital addition to the Texas cargo.

ReplyDeleteWelcome, Walk Through Fire. That's an awesome name.
ReplyDeleteI won't ask to abbreviate it, though.
Welcome, welcome, welcome!
Nice to have you. Boy, I'm going to need to check into purchasing some "Hello, My Name is..." stickers, aren't I?
Welcome Walk Through the Fire. Have fun with us.
ReplyDeleteHi again!
ReplyDeleteHuge thanks for your kindness. I'm fussy about my own name, feel like a stranger "in" it. So I've shortened it to the point of extinction almost. I'm Alejandra, but I tend to sign as A. If it's not a problem, I'll continue to use "walk through the fire" but you can call me "walk". And I'll make sure I sign my comments as A from now on, too.
I've been to other blogs. Including the closed ones. So I've read a lot already. What I wanted to know, after some of your comments, was wether the PR people around Jake were ever visible at all. I come from a rockband background -where managers and bodyguards are a lot more "there" and just thought I'd ask you what the situation with Jake was.
Like I said in my first comment, I'm basically optimistic about the future. So sometimes you'll have to tolerate that from me, I guess. I tend to be optimistic when I write -and I actually stopped writing at one point in my life because I was feeling bad and needed to feel bad and not be reasonable for a while. But words have come back to me and that story is indeed Jake-related. I don't want to sound like a teaser but there's probably not much to tell right now that might mean something to anybody but me.
I'll try to keep my comments short after these first two. I'll be reading and learning (it really is a great blog) and commenting every now and then.
Thanks again.
A x
Michael K's guesses for People
ReplyDeleteNot Mah Boo Anderson Cooper, because he will only come out on Paw Print Magazine. Every foxes mag of choice. My guesses (inhale) are (exhale): JC Chasez (probably), Zachary Quinto (probably not), Queen Latifah (probably never ever), Kevin Spacey (probably not) or Michelle Rodriguez (probably not)?
Welcome, Walk through the fire!

Good for JC if it is him. MK is probably right. Bragman said it was a musician.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this JC Chasez guy.
ReplyDeleteNot that that means anything but I'm pretty up on music and I don't recognize that name. Unless he's an opera or jazz/blues singer. Then I wouldn't know him from Adam, lol.
Well, I am on the big Break. The big Summer Break. Spring Break. Winter Break. Done with my story and all 3 chaps sent off to the ol' beta. So I'm going to push up the leg rest on the olllllll' La Z Boy and push it back, ahhhhhhhh, and maybe do some reading for once.
I never read anymore.
For once, I think I'm going to turn in early and get some shut-eye.
He was in N' Sync PG.
ReplyDeleteSo Ricky Martin wasn't Bragman's client? I was really hoping for an actor, not another musician, just because it's about time on that front. Also, since we've already had Lance Bass come out from the same group, just not so sure it will as much impact as someone else would have.
That being said, whoever it is, coming out is always a good thing, and helps create a sense a momentum.
Hope you're dreaming up more chapters Sherlaustin while getting some early shut-eye PG. Love this series, it always puts a big fat smile on my face.
Ah, thank you, Destiny. Isn't N'Sync the band that Nick Lachey came from? I think it was. Oh, wait. But if that's the same band Lance Bass came from, then that can't be Nick's. That's the same band Joey Fatone came from, too because they were all at DWTS. Oh, that's right - 98 Degrees is Nick's. I remember now from that OTH Dance Hall scene. LOL. Boy bands. I get them all confused.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have to say I kind of get a kick out of ol' Sherlaustin. He's onto something, I think. I should've had a class handout of our Rand McNally path.
Hey, I have to do a couple of shout outs.
Kacieeeeeeee!!! Man, Kacie, where in the heck did you go? Are you still doing This Old House with your place? What is going on with all that? Your birthday is coming up, you know. ;0
Elinor???? Where did you go? I thought you had your internet connection back. Did it blow again? Hope all is well.
Okay, well, I gotta go. Thank goodness this is Friday. It was a short week but it was a long week.
