Today's Out Spotlight is an award winning Canadian film director and screenwriter. Today's Out Spotlight is Patricia Rozema.
Patricia Rozema was born August 20, 1958 in Kingston, Ontario and raised in Sarnia, Ontario, the daughter of Jacoba Berandina and Jan Rozema. She grew up in strict Dutch Calvinist home where television was severely restricted and she didn’t go to a movie theatre until she was 16 years old. Rozema went to study philosophy and English literature at Calvin College in Michigan where she received her degree. She continued her education at the University of Toronto Mississauga.
After a brief stint as a print and then television journalist (CBC Television’s The Journal), she directed her first feature, I've Heard the Mermaids Singing, a serious comedy about a socially inept Girl Friday (Sheila McCarthy as Polly), which made one of the most outstanding feature debuts in the history of Canadian cinema. At the 1987 Cannes Film Festival, I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing won the Prix de la Jeunesse. That same year, it was voted one of Canada’s ten best films ever as polled by 100 international critics.
Rozema also directed the Six Gestures (part of the Yo-Yo Ma Inspired by Bach television series), which combined images of Yo-Yo Ma performing with skating sequences by figure skating legends Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean, interwoven with J.S. Bach's first-person narrative. Six Gestures was nominated for a Grammy and was awarded a Prime Time Emmy, for Outstanding Classical Music-Dance Program, as well as a Golden Rose, the top television award in Europe in 1998.
She then directed the romance, When Night Is Falling in 1995 starring Pascale Bussières, and including Don McKellar and Tracy Wright.
Her next two films were made outside Canada. Mansfield Park, shot in the UK, is a revisionist adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel of that name. Mansfield Park opened the 1999 World Film Festival in Montreal, the Chicago Film Festival, the Mill Valley Film Festival in San Francisco and was featured as a special presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Happy Days, an Irish production, is a film version of Samuel Beckett’s humorously despairing play in which a woman lives partially buried in a mound of sand. Happy Days is part of The Beckett Film Project (a project aimed at filming all of Beckett's plays), which includes work by directors David Mamet, Neil Jordan, Anthony Minghella and Atom Egoyan.
Throughout her career Rozema has also written, directed, edited and produced a number of short films, including Passion: A Letter in 16mm (1985); Urban Menace (1986); Desperanto (1991) as part of Montreal Vu Par; This Might Be Good (2000) for the Toronto International Film Festival; and Suspect (2005) which was reproduced in the journal Alphabet City 10 – Suspect (MIT Press).
Her film credits also include White Room and When Night is Falling, premiered in competition in the 45th Berlin International Film Festival and went on to win over 30 awards from different countries and at various gay and lesbian film festivals. It was voted one of the top 200 films of the 20th century “Top 200 of 2000” by the Chlotrudus Society of Independent Film. White Room earned 4 prizes, and 3 Genie nominations.
Rozema’s television credits include the pilot and two subsequent episodes of HBO’s groundbreaking dramatic series Tell Me You Love Me, an episode of the critically acclaimed HBO series In Treatment, and episodes of the Canadian television sitcom Michael, Tuesdays and Thursdays, scheduled to debut on CBC Television in fall 2011.
The made for television movie Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, which she directed and ghost wrote, was based on the phenomenally successful American Girl book series. The film earned Rozema a Director’s Guild of Canada Award nomination for Best Director and New York Times critic A. O. Scott hailed actress Abigail Breslin for turning in one of the top five female performances of the year
Rozema and co-writer Michael Suscy received an Emmy nomination (Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special), a Writers Guild of America Award nomination (Long Form – Original) and a PEN USA Award nomination in Screenplay for the very successful HBO movie Grey Gardens starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.
Rozema lives with her partner Lesley Barber.
Who would go home and not tell their sister they were there? Doesn't seem very likely, so I think it proves she was never there.
ReplyDeleteHer sister probably saw the photos she posted, and responded with the question, having not been let in on the sham.
I love how someone keeps coming here and insisting this time the relationship has to be real because we only see instagrams and twitter mentions. We all know that's how the bearding campaign was crafted, and to be in contrast to the Reeke mess.
Still doesn't make it real, and you're barking up the wrong tree.
This arrangement will never be like reeke. Reese was a high profile celeb. No one knows who this girl is. It is a social media fake relationship. No way that girl was in LA.

ReplyDeleteShe was in Los Angeles, just look at the photos, there is no doubt, stop kidding yourself, only she was not at the home of his parents.
ReplyDeleteWhere do you think she slept?
Last time I checked this blog was not about Alyssa, her instagram or where she slept. There are plenty of other places to talk about that. So take it there.

ReplyDeleteSo being a Hollywood actor is not an admirable career to you?
Of course I take my job very seriously and I find it important. I don’t do this to keep up a glamorous life style. Movies can change a lot. With stories you can make change happen and make people think about the important things in life. I want to be part of these questions that keep the world thinking. In the past years I have been interested in the reality outside my own world more and more. I am independent, don’t have kids and no responsibilities. Therefore I have the freedom to explore these abysses and be influenced by them. I feel a bit like the journeyman of life and I want to explore everything.
You are the uncle of your sister Maggie Gyllenhaal’s kids and the godfather of Michelle Williams’ daughter. How serious do you take this role?
I would do anything for these kids. They may not be my own but I have a very strong bond with them and I truly love them. When I shot “Prisoners” I had to think about them all the time. The interesting thing about my character is that he tries to develop no emotional ties while hunting the child molester. Which is hard when kids are involved. I didn’t succeed at that while shooting. I had my nieces and godchild on my mind all the time.

^^^ LOL Interesting he didn't mention his kids on his mind or, fatherhood or something letting people know he has children or "wants" children.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe Jake has children. Sorry No BabyTile! LOL
I am independent, don’t have kids and no responsibilities. Therefore I have the freedom to explore these abysses and be influenced by them. I feel a bit like the journeyman of life and I want to explore everything.
ReplyDeleteHold up.. Wait just a freakin minute.. Were these comments from Jake in some interview?
Is he saying to the public, "I'm independent and I don't have any kids"?
WoW
I am independent, don’t have kids and no responsibilities.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, who doesn't have responsibilities? It doesn't matter if you have children or not. Jake is such a liar and that's why I won't go see his films any longer. He has children and his answer is despicable.
In the past years I have been interested in the reality outside my own world more and more.
I have to laugh, though. When Jake isn't scripted he actually can't help but tell the truth. He says "in the past years", which means maybe the past three to four years he has been interested in realities outside his own world. That means when he took Brokeback Mountain back in 2004 he was interested in exploring his own inner world. Gotcha, Jake.
Is he saying to the public, "I'm independent and I don't have any kids"? WoW
ReplyDeleteHardly earth shattering. Jake and Austin have always lied about being in a relationship together and having kids. This is just more of the same.
I'm sure that's why Austin lives in a house with 6+ bedrooms. He's just a swinging bachelor. With no responsibilities.
This is translation of an article written in German.
ReplyDeleteAny German speakers want to take a crack at the original article and see if there were things lost in (Google) translation?
Where's that house with six bedrooms, again? The house number on the ticket does not exist. And also Jake is not raising his kids on some lame street in Central L.A. If Jake has a kid they probably live most of the time in NYC and if he keeps a house in L.A. it's not on N. Detroit where a dozen neighbors could see everything out their front window. An exclusive building with a doorman in NYC is way more private than that.
ReplyDeleteThis is the 3rd or 4th time Jake has gone way the hell out of his way to declare himself without kids. I've never known any other childless actor to emphasize that once, much less multiple times. There's a reason, for sure.
There's a reason, for sure
ReplyDeleteof course there's a reason,
He has no children
The fact Jake repeatedly goes out of the way to say he has no kids and no responsibilities is one of the reasons I think there may be at least one kid. Plus the way he goes and on about his nieces and Matilda, like "look, really, that's my only experience."
ReplyDeleteAt least you know what's the movie about?
ReplyDeletetells the story of two little girls kidnapped and the attempt of his father, HJ, and detectiv Loky, Jake, to find them.
it is obvious that the questions are on this subject
the same goes for the other time he said he did not have children, in a Q & A about EOW
In the film, after Zavala, Michael Pena's character dies, it is the agent Taylor (Jake) who decides to take care of his family and his children
talking about these topics, these questions are quite logical and obvious
Unless Jake is officially planning to come out, he is not going to admit he is gay and has been hiding his kids for years to some magazine, so of course he will say only what the public thinks. And besides, we've seen too many magazine articles that just paraphrase whatever they think they heard. That article means nothing. PR for the movie, plain and simple. Not sure why they chose Germany to launch the movie publicity. Does it open in Europe first or simultaneous to the US?
ReplyDeletethat just paraphrase whatever they think they heard
ReplyDeleteHear Jake say it with his own mouth!

Almost at the end of the video

ReplyDelete^^
Well Destiny, I respect your opinion, but, it's just that, your opinion. I happen to think that anyone how goes thru great lengths to have a child or 6 child(ren) would not hide them and lie about it regardless of their career.
It could also just mean, "He has NO Children".
It's just that simple. Wanting something to be true or assuming something to be true because of whatever, does not equal, It's True!
^^ anyone who
ReplyDeleteNo one here has ever seen Jake or Austin with a child. Nobody has ever said openly, (another star, a friend, an associate) that Jake or Austin has a child. No average citizen has spoken about these two with a child. They do live around other human beings. Surely someone knows the truth besides HW insiders. Average people see things, talk about it, post pictures of every waking moment of their lives nowadays. Not a picture yet of a child with any of the two. So, I think he's telling the truth but I believe he and Austin may still be involved in some kind of way.
ReplyDeleteOh yes there have been sightings of both men with children. You better believe it.
ReplyDelete^^ other peoples children ^^
ReplyDelete^^ other peoples children ^^
ReplyDeleteWhat about the "niece" sighting just back in May when both "nieces" were in NY with Maggie? There also was that tweet about Jake's daughter in daycare. What about the Paris video during the summer of 2008?
There have been more sightings, but these are just a few.
Wasn't there a sighting of Austin with a kid at a Ralph's grocery story just the other day?
ReplyDeleteWhat about the "niece" sighting just back in May when both "nieces" were in NY with Maggie?
