Out Spotlight

Today's Out Spotlight were the first gay couple to enter into a registered partnership anywhere in the world following Denmark's legalization of same-sex partnership registration in 1989, a landmark legislation which they were instrumental in bringing about. Activists they were committed to the cause and committed to each other. Today's Out Spotlight is Axel Axgil and Eigil Axgil.

Axel, born Axel Lundahl-Madsen, and Eigil, born Eigil Eskildsen, inspired by the 1948 UN Declaration of Human Rights, together with several friends, founded F-48 or Forbundet af 1948 (The Association of 1948), Denmark's first gay rights organization. By 1951, F-48's membership had grown to 1,339 and there were branches in Sweden and Norway.

In 1985, F-48 became the Danish National Association of Gays and Lesbians (Landsforeningen for Bøsser og Lesbiske, Forbundet af 1948 or LBL). The organization was one of the oldest gay rights groups in Europe.

Axel was fired from his job when his role in the organization was made public. The couple went on to  launch a magazine, Vennen (The Friend).

In 1955 Axel and Eigil were convicted on pornography charges and sentenced to short prison terms for running a gay modeling agency that sold pictures of naked men. While in prison, they melded their first names into the shared surname Axgil as a public show of defiance.

Later they ran a resort hotel that catered to a predominantly gay clientele.

In 1989, after years of lobbying by the Axgils and other advocates, Denmark became the first country to allow same-sex civil unions when the Danish Parliament passed a law giving homosexuals most of the rights and obligations of marriage, although not the right to adopt a child. (That would be granted later.) Other countries in Europe soon followed suit.

On Oct. 1, 1989, Denmark became the first nation in the world to recognize domestic partnerships for same-sex couples. That day the Axgils and 10 other Danish couples were married by the deputy mayor of Copenhagen in the city hall, accompanied by worldwide media attention. The Axgils had been a couple for 40 years.

Eigil Axgil died on September 22, 1995 at the age of 73.

Axel Axgil died on October 29, 2011 at the age of 96.

Where in the world?

Last week and weekend you couldn't miss Jake, he was everywhere.  This weekend it's like he vanished off the face of the earth.  After Jake's appearance in London on Monday, it was like poof! he was gone.
And after Monday a strange thing happened.

The movie became  a Hugh Jackman movie, not a Hugh and Jake movie.  The promotion in Europe became about Hugh's movie, and there was no mention of Jake.  It was all about Hugh.   And where did Jake go?

Case in point - Hugh "taken 'hostage' as he's mobbed by army of screaming female fans while promoting new movie Prisoners" (source) is all about  Hugh promoting in Spain. There is a noticeable shift in promoting this movie in Europe and it all about Hugh.

But where did Jake go?

Although it does prove a point that Jake can slip away quickly and quietly.

No Snake Jake

"Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?" ―Indiana Jones

Remember Jake talking about his love of Indy during PoP's promotion?

"I made this movie for the kid in me that loved Indiana Jones, loved The Goonies."

Well he and Indy have something in common - no love for snakes.

Spoiler alert:  There are snakes in Prisoners.

Jake has to face his fears and deal with a set with 10 snakes for a scene because Denis refused to add the snakes using CGI.

"Everything was done in a controlled way but ultimately there was risk in it and he (Villeneuve) wanted it to be real. The snakes were real and in every single shot they were all around. We had to go searching in the walls of the house after we finished shooting in that house to make sure the snakes hadn't crawled up inside there."

And was Jake scared?  You betcha.

Jake admitted he was terrified in every take he did with the snakes:

"The snakes were no fun but what was really funny was watching Denis have no fear of them, which was so strange. He'd walk around with seven or 10 snakes and I'd be like, 'How are you not afraid of these snakes?' while I was pretending I wasn't afraid of them. I'm definitely not gonna admit that next to Hugh Jackman! Then Denis would say, 'My son loves snakes. We have snakes everywhere'."

Of course old family friend Samuel E. Jackson could understand that

Go Tell on The Mountain

It looks like Jake is going to do Everest.  In a recent interview with GQ.comUK Jake talked about the future project.

You're next working on Everest. Did your experience with Bear Grylls on Man vs Wild help you prepare?
With Everest, it's a story that I've always been fascinated with - even as just a metaphor. The idea of what is seemingly unattainable, but the reasons why people go there and try and as they say "conquer" a mountain. That is a fascinating turn of phrase. That somehow getting to the top of it is conquering it.

As someone who is quite active is that something you relate to? The adventurer's spirit?
I like the idea of the adventurer's spirit. I think that is very much what a man searches for, in a certain way. But where I find myself getting caught up is where that spirit doesn't meet discipline. What I loved about the process of researching Everest is just what a science it all is. You can believe in the sense of adventure, and you can create nostalgia based on some lofty idea of it, but ultimately to conquer that mountain requires great discipline - using your critical, analytical mind - as well as that spirit we all talk about.

Pre-production mentions have said that Everest will be filming in Iceland. If  indeed it is Iceland and with Iceland being so close to the Arctic circle - it is doubtful that the movie will film  in 2013 - with only 5 hours of sunlight available a day by the end of November.  So if the Iceman cometh won't be until Spring 2014.

Little Mix

It's a little of this and a little of that or better than that a little bit Austin and little bit Jake

Let's talk numbers first:

Prisoners took the US box office this past weekend, making 21.4 million.
September is a good month for Jake.  EoW opened at #1 last September domestically.
And Austin tweeted some great numbers

RAY DONOVAN ended its season ranked as the highest-rated freshman series in SHOWTIME history, outpacing Homeland season one by 33%. -AUS10

And while Austin gets love for Julian

All you gals deserve a guy like Julian. Don't settle for less. Thank you for accepting him into your world!! - AUS10

But don't think EMPIRE Magazine is loving Jake too much at the moment

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Jake Gyllenhaal won't be coming in today for a webchat. Shame, we'd tidied our desks. Well, half a desk. - @empiremagazine

OK, we washed a mug. @empiremagazine

OK, we gave it a quick rinse. He could always have tried to drink out of the clean side, we suppose. - @empiremagazine

he was scared you were going to take him down to the basement to show all the film reels you have.

Would any famous movie stars like to come in for a webchat at 1pm? We'll lay on some snacks (four cans of Coke Zero and some Rich Tea). - @empiremagazine
Jake Gyllenhaal will never know how close he came to being embroiled in a conversation about beard oil, the topic du jour round Empire HQ. - @empiremagazine
Yes, beard oil. As in oil for beards. This is, apparently, a thing. Presumably to stop beards squeaking. - @empiremagazine

and well the jokes make themselves from this retweet by Empire (whether unintentional or intentional)

it is a thing, aye. beard lube.

But Jake showed up on (well called in) Greg James' show on BBC2

Hello! On today's broadcast...1) Loads and loads of excellent music which you can win 2) Kanye West news with Zane 3) Brand new Star Caller -@gregjames

@empiremagazine Jake Gyllenhall has been stolen by @gregjames. Does this mean media war? -Twitter

But Jake wasn't phoning it in all day - he showed up at the Apple Store on Regent Street in London with Hugh and Denis for a meet and great/chat with fans about Prisoners. (Then again it may have been to get his hands on one of those new sold out Iphones : D)
