Out Spotlight

Today's Out Spotlight is an American lawyer, journalist and author. Today's Out Spotlight is Glenn Greenwald.

Glenn Edward Greenwald was born in March 6, 1967, New York, New York and raised in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, where his grandfather was a city councilman.

Greenwald’s youthful ambition was politics. He became the first teenager on the county parks and recreation board. While a senior in high school, at 17, he ran unsuccessfully for the city council. After graduating from high school, Greenwald enrolled in George Washington University where he majored in philosophy. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1990.

He then attended the New York University School of Law earning a Juris Doctor in 1994. His debate skills helped secure him a job at a prominent law firm that represented rich and powerful clients. Dissatisfied with the work, he came out as a gay man and began his own law firm. Greenwald believed that as social outcasts, gay people tend to be more willing to challenge authority.

In 2005 Greenwald launched a blog, Unclaimed Territory. He focused on unbridled government surveillance versus first-amendment rights. In 2006 he published “How Would a Patriot Act? Defending American Values from a President Run Amok,” which became a New York Times best seller.  Four of the five books he has written have been on The New York Times Best Sellers list.

He gained notoriety for providing the international media with classified National Security Agency (NSA) documents illegally obtained by Edward Snowden.
In June 2013 Greenwald became widely known after The Guardian published the first of a series of reports detailing United States and British global surveillance programs, based on classified documents disclosed by Edward Snowden. The disclosure exposed controversial U.S. government surveillance activities.

The series on which Greenwald worked, along with others, won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.

When the United States soldier formerly known as Bradley Manning (now Chelsea Manning) was arrested for stealing secret government documents about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and disseminating them to WikiLeaks, Greenwald came to Manning’s defense.  He characterized Manning’s intentions as “politically insightful, astute and thoughtful.”

Greenwald published an article praising President Obama for his support of same-sex marriage. For Greenwald the matter was personal. In 2005 he left the United States to pursue a relationship with a Brazilian man, David Miranda. Of Obama’s endorsement Greenwald stated, “It is a powerful message to gay youth that their sexual orientation is neither a flaw nor an abnormality.”

In February 2014 he became, along with Laura Poitras and Jeremy Scahill, one of the founding editors of The Intercept. Greenwald was named by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers of 2013.

“Gay issues are about the same fundamental issues as other civil liberties questions—the rights of the individual.”

  2. I have never been more ashamed of Jake Gyllenhaal than I am at this moment.
Please pardon me while I rip him up a new one for a moment. I'm not apologizing for this.

The Movie (and the Moment) That Made Jake Gyllenhaal Shift Gears
    Meriah Doty

In Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal plays a crime reporter who furiously chases down leads (in speeding cars, no less!), obsessed with breaking news for a local Los Angeles television station. The film has earned strong early notices and Oscar buzz for its star, whose extreme weight loss for the thriller has been well documented.

As Gyllenhaal reveals in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly there was a surprising inspiration behind the character: his parents’ 2009 divorce. “It was incredibly painful but liberating for them,” the actor explained. (Stephen Gyllenhaal, a director, and Naomi Foner, a screenwriter, decided to end their marriage after 32 years.) “When anybody does something that honest, it inspires you. I tried to emulate it in my work and in my life, too.”

By then, Gyllenhaal had already begun to rethink his career, thanks to the 2010 critical and box-office bomb Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, based on a 3-D video game. “There was a moment when I went, ‘I’m not what my work is,’” the 33-year-old actor said of the film in his EW interview. “Meaning, I’m not communicating who I am.”

So who is he? Gyllenhaal points to the gritty cop drama End of Watch (2012), the Oscar-nominated Prisoners (2013), and his upcoming turn in Nightcrawler as being truer to his acting self than the misguided Persia. “I look at past work I’ve done and go, ‘I wish I could redo that again. Tear it up and sew it up,’” he
    added.

It was that Misguided Persia that bought you your children

    Oh right, Jake. Right.

And so are you saying that RDJ is Ironman? That Heath was himself The Joker?

Jake blames his choice of taking the Prince of Persia role for how crappy his career became.

So what he needs to do is give that money back. If he is so ashamed of that movie and that role, he needs to give that money back because that is tainted money, right Jake? That's dirty money.

What an ass. Part of that Disney movie money bought him and Austin those children. It paid for the private planes. It has paid for $$$$$ meals. It has paid for those Q7's. It paid for that Long Island home they had. It paid for Beijing.

But if he wants to forget he ever did that movie, if he wants to push the Start button post Persia, then he needs to give that money back.

  4. The other thing that butthead needs to remember is that every single stinkin time he shames that movie Prince of Persia, he is crapping on those professionals who made the movie with him - the Gemma's, the Ben Kingsley's, the make up person, the grips, the personal assistants, the stunt people, the runners, the security employees, the children who starred in that movie - every single person who worked on that film. Who tried to do the best job that they could. Who all gave up something to do that movie in Morocco. Who all worked with him and tried to help make him look good.

It doesn't matter that the end result was less than what he wanted. What matters is that those are all professional people who were doing a job they wanted to do.

And by Jake slamming that movie, by acting so ashamed of it, he puts all of these people down as well and he's telling them they did crap work and it was a crap film and a waste of time.

    wow.

I repeat - what. an. ass.

Somebody needs to flick a Jared Padalecki-sized thumb against Jake's head and tell him to grow up, to man up to his decisions and choices in life and to move the hell on with his life.

Quit regretting everything. Quit being ashamed of what you've done, Jake. Quit hanging your head and crying. And for pete's sake, quit being ashamed of your sexuality and your husband and your kids.

In other words - grow the hell up.

  5. And if Jake wants to start his whole life and career post-Source Code, then he is drop-kicking Brokeback Mountain and October Sky.

That's what his people are doing on Twitter and he knows that. He's paying them to do this. We see full well what is being done on social media - the repetition that his career starts post-Source Code.

He's erasing everything he did pre-Source Code because whatever came before is not worthy. It's to be forgotten.

    #UngratefulJake

What kind of values are he and Austin instilling in those children of theirs? Is this the kind of thinking they're instilling? Shame? Regret? Lying? Those kids did not ask to be brought into these kinds of circumstances, this kind of life where they are hidden from public acknowledgement from their own fathers.

Is this the kind of life Jake and Austin envisioned back in 2007? Is it really?

Did any of us foresee what we are seeing today? I can't even believe these two guys are who they have become.

    But they surely are.

  6. I wonder if Jake has told Natalie Portman that Brothers was crap?

I wonder if he's told Dustin Hoffman that Moonlight Mile was crap?

It's just like a co-worker I've had in the past who spent her last two weeks of employment by talking about how happy she was to be leaving. By gloating about leaving. How is that supposed to make the ones who remain feel? Are they supposed to feel bad for remaining behind? For continuing to work at the same place?

You don't go out that way. You keep that to yourself. You show respect to those other employees, those other co-workers who do feel good about their choice. Who do feel good about the job that they've done.

It's just not a thoughtful way to go out. You do not crap on your former co-workers like this.

**sigh**. All right, think it's all out of my system now. I've said what I needed to say and then some.

I am so tired of him taking a dump on his former work. It's like he is so ashamed of what he's done and that is just - I'm not even sad for him anymore. I pity him. Because he can't even enjoy what he's done in the past. He can't find the good in anything.

There's always good in something we've done if we gave it all we had and did the best that we could.

  7. I take it you saw Chloe's picture taken by Austin then? The misdirected anger is a little obvious.

  8. The misdirected anger is a little obvious.

    lol. You poor, misguided soul.

This Yahoo interview just appeared on Twitter today. Pay attention.

Austin and ol' Chlo are merely amusing and Nickelodeon fare.

  9. He's erasing everything he did pre-Source Code because whatever came before is not worthy.

Which mean Jake's all about erasing the gay, PG. Because that is what this "interview" is all about. That is what his career since WME has been all about. Talk about self loathing.

Looking forward to Nightcrawler, where Jake Gyllenhaal plays a hetero.

  10. More proof of the repackaging of Jake Gyllenhaal. Check this one out.

#MCM is #JakeGyllenhaal because look at him. Fun Fact: I used to think this dude was super unattractive, no lie but after the years have gone by and I saw his angry side, I was like "He can be one of my 20 celebrity husbands." 😍💋💚

So in other words, when Jake was performing softer roles like Moonlight Mile and Love and Other Drugs, not to mention Brokeback, he was unattractive.

But now that he's slamming men's heads on desks, shooting up people, dragging dead bodies and screaming into mirrors, he's suddenly very attractive and hey, husband material.

WME, you are so screwed up, it isn't funny. What a bunch of social misfits and a frightening member of our society.

  11. Anyone who has been looking at Jake's search on Twitter and Tumblr for the past several weeks has no doubt seen the marketing campaign of WME.

There has been another increase in the tweets insinuating that fans don't like Jake in Brokeback, that Brokeback is the one movie they won't see, and that every movie Jake has done before Source Code is crap and forgettable.

Homophobic to the core and a disgraceful marketing campaign.

  12. Austin and ol' Chlo are merely amusing and Nickelodeon fare.

No kidding. No one cares about the Poopster. She's a toddler in a room full of adults.

  13. And, Austin is still gay.

    Oh, and so is Jake.

    Gay.

And the father of a buttload of kids.

    And a husband!!

    Jake Gyllenhaal, ladies and gentlemen.
