  1. Rereading last Thursday's Awful Truth what I initiall interpreted as subtle blackmail might be seen more positively as gentle encouragement by Ted: "So not true! I took a pic and showed the hateful folks how wrong they were, will you please now do the same for us? We’re waiting...high-quality pics preferred!" Is he asking Jake to let himself be papped with Austin? Or go for the full red-carpet "hand-holding" photo op?

(BTW this is the sunny side of the street. Thanks SK and Wicked. Regards to Tom.)

  2. i do think the US box office is in a weird place right now. the general number is down (very bad, in fact) and those that get to the top are usually huge blockbusters which cost 50 times of Rendition's budget or horror (disburbia) or comedies...

i don't think jake did the film because he wants box offic success, he might want to win awards though. but rendition is not likely to be it.

as for Zodiac, i would still blame whatever marketing they did in US... it's a waste, they could wait til it was premiered in Cannes and generated more momentum for it. it did rather well in Europe, i believe... but europe boxoffice almost means nothing when compared to US.

but then, I am not worried. did anyone freak out when Ryan Gosling's mainstream attempt "Fracture" didn't do well? did he suddenly become "not promising"?

Jake's next project is by Jim Sheridan, renowned and a serious film-maker... it shows how he wants his career to be like.

sometimes the jake fans' wish of him reaching superstardom makes me sad.

I became a fan because he played Jack Twist, not because he "almost" played Spiderman.

  3. I became a fan because he played Donnie Darko, Winterbird :-)

  4. Sigh. I would love to hear about the Boston get together and despite the box office what those that saw it thought of Rendition.

WInterbird, Jake seems to be under a bigger microscope than Ryan Gosling.

  5. ETA: though I do agree with you and Convinced that I am glad Jake choses the movies he does. :)

  6. I think so too, guys, and I thought Rendition was a beautiful film. I would have liked to see the part of Douglas more developed, as Wicked said, because it was such an important role in the film and Jake was so good in it. Michael Clayton was the same way, got off to a bit of a slow start, but seems to be hanging in there as people see what a good film it is. Here's a little bit of what I thought of it - still needs some edits as I can't seem to stop thinking about it or it's beautiful imagery. The Boston get-together was wonderful - so nice to meet our wonderful OMG'ers.

  7. When you look at Jake's past and future projects, I am impressed with the acclaimed actors and directors he has worked with. I think he uses his project choices to gain experience with those best in the business, and the best at what they do. He takes something away from each of the projects he's done to help him evolve as an actor.

Some actors pick roles based on the sizes of the part, or the size of the check. I think Jake makes that secondary, to the right script and the right people.

tbs! It was a great time with everyone coming to visit Beantown. It was a blast meeting everyone. Wicked will be posting pics soon and there will be much more to say.

  9. Totally OT. Just read Jake's comments on bathroom floors on dlisted. Hilarious! This is why I love him: he can go from serious and articulate to WTF in 30 seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Now... the $64,000 is what is Jake doing on Men's bathroom floors, and how does he know how cold they are?

And what does Mr. Spumanti know about this? ; )

  11. WAit, why did they end up in a female bathroom? looking for batteries? and how could he tell the temp? lol jake is a cutie :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Jake and Susan did an interview --She interviewed him for a magazine when Moonlight Mile was coming out. They had no batteries and they had to do the interview in the Ladie's Room.

  13. Sorry I should have mention this about the link I posted above. It is not a random utube video, it is a Jake interview in which he is asked about dating Reese and he basically say he would love to respond but he cannot because he will only respond to questions to which he can give a honest answer.

Why just not saying YES? if it was the case? Would say no basically then make it clear that the Austin camp is correct? Oh Jake!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Dlisted posters tend to assume Jake is gay and therefore promiscuous. Geez, Jake, what's so wrong with coming out and saying you have a nice bf you love rather than be assumed to be Larry Craig? Consenting adults can do what they like but there is an assumption of gay=man-ho=sordid.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well we do know that Jake likes to do it in public places. The mens bathroom would qualify. I don't think he is meating (come on that isn't misspelled! ;-) the guys there but dragging poor hapless Austin in to do the nasty ;-)

Most ambiguous gay denial to liking mens bathroom floors better than women's ones and people wonder why we like him so much!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I assumed he really meant getting drunk and falling asleep on bathroom floors. Done it myself!

    ReplyDelete
  17. ^No I don't think having a little fun with your bf in a bathroom is sordid :-)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Is that the GMTV one, zero? That's the closest I saw him to cross in any of the interviews.

Gah, I can't see dlisted, would love to know what that's all about :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sorry but I don't know how to explain Jake denies he is gay, then goes on to talk about men bathroom floors like that. Jake IS crazy. I love him for that, though.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think there are times that Jake says what he knows he must say, and other times just says what he really wants to say.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Scylla, yes it is the GMTV. What do you mean by:

That's the closest I saw him to cross in any of the interviews

I am n ot familiar with that expression ...

  22. Special k, that's right. But I think I might take up Meryl's job in Rendition if my alternative was being Jake's PR.

very funny comments about the men's bathroom floor!

i don't know... that doesn't sound like someone who wants to distant himself from gay rumours?

  27. The Guardian interview seemed like "Earnest Jake" - and gee, Im sure the Hollywood gay scene IS another world - dug in, old, back-stabbing, gossipy, and Im sure not happy with ambivalence - and I would guess Jake is not a favorite son - or nephew. In other words he's got no Uncle Bob, as in "Bob's Your Uncle", in that world: and so it is, inded, a different world, as are the guys wearing cowboy chaps with their butts taking the air.

So Earnest Jake says he's not of that world, he's not "homosexual" but jokey Jake says the place is loves best is Gay Head, in the Vineyard, famous gay hangout, and he kids about playing Little Red Riding Hood in family psychodramas, and I bet he does. And although he says in Guardian interview, that he's not "open to persuasion", he's not closing any doors.

The only line that troubles me from the Guardian interview was when he said he's not being provocative. Is that Earnest Jake compartmentalizing or Expedient Jake?

  30. I was curious to find out what was going on with Austin's role on FNL so I emailed the author of the original article to see if she had any other info. Her answer:

"He's supposed to show up in November, playing one of Julie's teachers at the high school." :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. BV -- You Rock! Gold Stars for you!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks BV. I wondered if Austin was turning up for November sweeps.

Re Rendition at the box office. How hard is it for people to get that this is a movie that not everybody is going to watch, no matter who is in it? Some aren't going to rush out to watch it and some may wait for it to come out on DVD.
It's a heavy movie and sometimes people just want to be entertained when they go see a movie.

Re Jake and the box office. How many actors are there? How many of them can be A list? Not every actor is going to get there and it doesn't make them not successful.
The box office is bs. The Oscars are bs.
I think if an actor can look back at the end of his career and say I worked with a variety of directors and other actors/actresses in a variety of interesting parts and I worked 110% on those parts, that is success.

  34. OT

Hugh Jackman’s flashy new TV series, Viva Laughlin, was just canceled after just two episodes.

Last night’s second episode drew a mere 6.8 million viewers for CBS.

If The New York Times dubs your show “the worst show in history,” you’re screwed.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree ag. I don't understand the impulse some have to pin Rendition's modest BO receipts on Jake either, like it's a failing on his part. As long as he continues to take meaningful parts in films of substance I will be happy [and proud] of him.

    ReplyDelete
  36. People in the industry will not be blaming the poor receipts on Jake. He has kept the profile of this movie higher than it would have been without his PR work. It was going to be a hard one to get people excited about, especially Americans. That is why every one in this movie took a wage cut to do it. It was meant to be a political film and possibly an Oscar vehicle. Jake has gotten mostly good reviews and I think Reese hasn't faired quite so well. That it opened in the top 10 is probably good enough.

Likewise with Zodiac. Jake did a very good job of portraying the character he was supposed to be. That it wasn't as scary or gory or fast paced or whatever the crowed of movie goers want these days had nothing to do with Jake.

Jake seems to be interested in doing good scripts with great directors. He is doing a Jim Sheridan movie next.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think if an actor can look back at the end of his career and say I worked with a variety of directors and other actors/actresses in a variety of interesting parts and I worked 110% on those parts, that is success.

ag, I feel Jake himself would likely agree with the above you said, judging from the comments he has made.

    ReplyDelete
  38. also, so many people even after PPM were quick in saying that his career was fading and blah blah, yet he keeps pinning a bunch of roles with the best directors. I think studios and directors who want box office numbers might be going to other actors, but those interested in exploring some serious work and perhaps get a chance for awards go to Jake, because of course they know he is good.

  39. Update from the Boston Get-Together:

It was great to see everyone and meet folks I had never met. Destiny and her Mrs. brought a friend who is also a Jake fan. I finally got to meet NETB! Tom and his buddy had to leave right after the movie, but the rest of us went for Mexican. We had almost a 3 hour lunch! It was me, Spesh, NETB, Destiny, her Mrs., and their friend.

I had a great time staying with Spesh. We bummed around Cambridge yesterday and it was such fun! It was cool to be in Boston when the Red Sox won the pennant too. There are pictures, but unfortunately Air Tran has lost my bag! I'm not sure right now whether it is lost lost, or just misplaced for the moment. I'm hoping for the latter.

I thought the movie was good but Jake's character was underdeveloped. I would have liked more of a sense of how the torture was affecting him. I really liked Omar Metwally and Peter.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Perhaps the real mistake was for making a movie like this a HW wide release as opposed to keep it more indie and go for the art house. The people who are interested in this kind of topics would have felt more appeal, I feel people don't expect HW to put out serious pics on these issues. Jake would have been fine in it, and so for Peter, because they have a history of indie succesful movies. But I think casting Reese was a big mistake. And perhaps Meryl too.
An ordinary looking, non-famous, good actress would have done wonders for the movie in Reese's role.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wicked, I'm so glad that you were able to visit, and at Pennant time too! It's a rare, fun and exhausting time around here because nobody sleeps much until the games are ovah! Was Spesh watching the game until the wee hours last night? Since the Curse of the Babe has been broken, we're winning a lot more. ;)

Walking around Cambridge is always a good time. It was a pleasure to meet you and everyone! :*

    ReplyDelete
  44. How many letters about Toothy Tile have there been from Texas? And this one from Austin too!

NETB- Spesh behaved herself admirably and did not scream and yell real loud. One of the workers at the airport already had an ALCS champions T shirt on this morning. Someone asked her how she got it and she said she watched some luggage for some passengers (I guess I should have had her watch mine!) and they brought her back a T shirt. She said sometimes it does pay to be nice. Airport workers are not supposed to watch luggage for people.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wicked, I agree about the luggage -it's not a good idea. But, it's nice that she has a shirt!

Thanks Tom,it was such a pleasure to meet you too. So glad you posted - please stay!!!! The Sox vs. the Colorado Rockies - Woohoo!

  46. Just heard from Air Tran baggage. They say they have my bag and will deliver it. If that actually happens I will post the pictures we took. Might need to get the Mrs. to help me get them out of the camera, though.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I had a great time in Boston as did my gf and my friend who is a big Jake fan but not a Jausty fan (I'm working on that). I really enjoyed finally getting to meet netb and Special, and seeing Wicked again. What people would probably find suprising is how little time we actually spent talking about J&A.

I agree with Wicked and netb's review of the movie. Jake's role was smaller than I would have expected, and they could have spent more time developing his character. I went into the movie not expecting to like it, but I thought it was pretty good. I don't understand why it is getting so many bad reviews. As for the box office numbers, movies like Syriana and Thank You and Good Night were considered "hits" even though they did not make a lot of money at thee bo office. This was never going to be a movie that would bring in huge numbers, and I think it did respectable numbers.

Finally, I was wondering when we'd hear about the Red Sox victory Special!

There are no pics of course. How very US of them.

    Reese and Jake Spotted Kissing
    Tuesday October 23, 2007

    Are they making it official?

Dressed in matching black T-shirts and jeans, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal strolled hand-in-hand and smooched at Los Angeles International Airport October 22, new photos of the on-again duo reveal.

The pair had been returning from Rome, where they were promoting their new film Rendition. On October 19, Witherspoon, 31, was spotted resting her head on Gyllenhaal's shoulder while walking through the streets as they enjoyed some downtime.

Looks like the couple may need to start comforting each other even more: Their buzzed-about CIA thriller bombed at the bomb office, coming in at No. 9 with $4.2 million.

    US Weekly

You know I kind of take this as a good sign. Because something must be really big, if they are going this far out limb. Seriously people. The pictures of them in Rome looked like they belong on Dr. Phil more than the Dating Game. This sounds like, to use Jake's favorite word on Ellen, a big pile of Poo.

    ReplyDelete
  55. BTW, is anyone going to watch Ellen today?

What will they do next, have him carrying her threw LAX? Now I have done it! Given them their next scoop.

    ReplyDelete
  58. It's interesting that these two sightings of Jeese (the one in Rome and now the one at LAX) took place right after Ted's article about J&A in the Village.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Jake and Reese were just pretending to be cold to each other, IMO. Us mentioned pics, this is not just a sighting so I assume Us bought the pics for their next issue. As far as Ted & JJ is concerned methinks JJ has been set up yet again, someone fed him more BS knowing he would post it, they knew about the Jake and Reese pics, this way they can stick to Ted via JJ, the original source of the BI. That would explain why Ted refuse to comment on Jake in his letter section today regarding Jake and Reese.

PS: The sighting in NY was BS/set up as well.
