Less is More

"Knowing when to do nothing is one of the least appreciated of an actor's skill, here's one who learned it early."

Many may scratch their head when they read that Jake was included in Esquire's Performances of the Year for his role in Rendition. "What the heck did he do? He just sat there for most of the movie." Precisely. But sometimes less is more. But how is that a performance? The performance is the subtly of restraint. To convey something from nothing. Many actors can go all out and go over the top to make their characters larger than life, but it is true talent to resonate in the quietness of a character.

Jake has been seen crafting this in his last three films, Brokeback, Zodiac, and Rendition. For all of the bravado of Jack Twist, it was the restraint and quietness of Jack that spoke much more. Heath received praised for his role at Ennis, and rightfully so, but many missed how Jake brought Jack Twist to the screen. Many thought that his performance was less than Heath's but if you look back you can see that Jake is doing much more with the character than just what you see on your first look at Jack.

Zodiac found him using restraint and introspective quietness to portray Robert Graysmith. Again first looking at Zodiac you are drawn to watching Robert Downey Jr.'s performance. Jake's performance at first passing doesn't seem like how you should play a lead, but a secondary part. Then watching interviews with Graysmith you realize wow, Jake found his Graysmith, he captured the essence of this cartoonist. The power of his restraint comes through again.

In Rendition you find him spending most of the movie in a darken room observing. You see Douglass Freeman almost detracted from the rest of the characters, and see Jake's performance an antithesis to his fellow actors. He doesn't want to be there, not wanting to participate, both as Douglas and as Jake. But that is exactly what the audience is supposed to be feeling. While you are busy watching the torture of Anwar, done so well by Omar Metwally, you become frustrated because you want Jake to do something, anything. What has he done? And right there he has caught you - he made you react to character out of doing nothing. You have been brought into the story in another way. And then you see Douglas reach his breaking point and finally doing something to save Anwar. Time, patience and restraint to create the performance.

Jake is creating performances that lend themselves to second and third looks to get the true sense of them. They are so layered that are to be watched over again to be peeled back and discovered.

It is easier to go broad, you can hide more your of weaknesses as an actor, but it is when you hold back and give just enough that you leave the door open for everyone to see the true essence both the performance and the actor. The audience just have to stop and take the time to look.

If you really believe in what you are saying sign your name to it.

How? Click other and give yourself a name. What name? What ever you want to call yourself.

  2. Good that Jake got some recognition for Rendition. "Enjoyed" is probably the wrong word for a film about torture but I did enjoy seeing something addressing a complex issue from HW.
Brothers could be interesting but I hope it avoids sentimentality. Be great to see Jake give a more "powerhouse" performance.

  3. Looks like "Brothers" and "Nailed" (if Jake is in it?) will be more action based, if ya know what I mean. I wonder too about if they (the studio, PR, paid gossips) will be putting a Jake/Jessica "relationship" together during the Nailed production, since rumors are going around about Jessica Biel being gay. Maybe this whole Reeke thing was to suffuse the "two gay actors in a hetero sex film" story.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I do think Jake is looking to round out as an actor. I think he is naturally comedic so that Nailed will be a great role for him to get back into for the satirical quality to it. I think Brothers is the first chance at him playing the heavy/the not so nice guy that everyone thinks of him as. No boy scout mentions for him in Brothers.

I think Zodiac and Rendition were somewhat transitory roles, taking him into more adult mainstream roles. Of course BBM was an adult role, but going in no one ever thought it would be a mainstream hit.

It will be interesting to see what he direction he takes in his career during his 30's. What projects he want to take on. To be 26 and have to iconic roles (Darko and Jack Twist) is huge. Where do you go from there?

  5. Great post, Special. I agree that Jake has been under appreciated and post critics don't pay attention to the sublety of his work. He really is an excellent actor and I am glad Esquire recognized his work in Rendition.

Annoying how some people seem to be so obsessed and have such a one track mind. A post about Jake as an actor has to be turn into gossip about him and Jessica Biel. Give me a break.

  13. "Over in the States, "Turning Japanese" was deciphered as a paen to masturbation - more specifically the Oriental - looking facial distortions one pulls in the moment of climax (so I'm reliably informed).

Fenton is characteristically reticent on such matters. "It means whatever you want it to mean," he says, before admitting: "I wrote it as a love song. But when I went to America everyone said to me, "Is it about wanking?" In interviews, I'd say alternatively, "Yes it is", and "No, it's not". It could be about a lot of things. I just woke up with that phrase in my head. It's just an image which captures what that song was all about. But, no it wasn't intended to be about wanking at the time. What surprised me was that the Americans thought it was an English phrase!"

  22. Haven't had a chance to post so a few things:

I like the new feature "The Out Spotlight" and was happy to see a poet highlighted.

Austin's role on FNL has generated a bit of controversy. Some people are expecting the worst and are saying that the teacher/student relationship is "icky". Others are saying that it's very common for students to have a crush on their teachers and they don't think the storyline will go too far. I have to admit that I would have had a crush if Austin was my teacher. The good news is that people are discussing his role which gives him some new exposure and name recognition.

If you haven't seen it, spooky2th has a blond Austin on her website. You have to scroll down a bit to see the photo.

I'm looking forward to seeing Jake in a less understated performance. He owned the role of Jack Twist in BBM. I can't imagine anyone else playing that role. He put in a solid performance for both Zodiac and Rendition, but both roles could have easily been played by someone else. I think that "Brothers" and "Nailed" will give him a chance to show some range.

    ReplyDelete
  23. About our song choice- the reason we chose this song has nothing to do with race. It was something else entirely.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think its great that Austin's getting some exposure for FNL. You'd be hard pressed not to be slightly taken with him when he looks so wonderful in his array of shirt and tie combos (Austinmedia has the full range). He looks pretty cute as a blond as well.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If it has nothing to do with race, Wicked, what does it have to do with? Is it making fun of Jake or the poses of all the actors on the Esquire cover? Please give us clueless a clue.

  27. Lets talk less about a song written 20 years ago and more about....something, anything else. Even Reeke.

It'll be nice to see Jake and Austin riding bikes again. Didnt they do that the day after Thanksgiving last year? I dont expect it to happen on the same day this year, but soon. And Mimo I think was right on the previous thread, get your sick buckets out. I wouldnt be surprised to see J/R smiley pics leaving from LAX to Hawaii on Tues/Weds. Yuck.

But hopefully TG will be a real time for real family. We will see I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Awwww, I wanted to enjoy my Thanksgving dinner in peace! Yes, we were lucky to see the bikeriding pics last year (J&A). That's how I always see TG, a time for home and real family. You can jet off any other holiday. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Even if they are not sharing the holiday together,(but hoping they get to) I am sure that they will be thinking of each other.

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all the things we are most thankful for. I think both J&A would say they are thankful for each other and what they have together.

  31. New from Ted:

    Dear Ted:
Do you think Reese Witherspoon knows everything she needs to know about Jake Gyllenhaal?
    Carla
    Boston

    Dear Get Ready:
This may surprise you, darling, but yes, she does. Everything. And, please, next question goes to Reese, not us, she’ll have to answer for herself.

    Dear Ted:
Apparently, Toothy Tile must be awfully big in the entertainment Industry and awfully powerful. I can't believe he hasn't been outted like Chad Allen was back in the day. Maybe one of his former fed-up paramours will finally do the deed and make him go public.

Sometimes I wonder if any of you people would have any sensitivity beyond yourselves. Ever think an Asian-American might find those lyrics offensive? Of course not. Yes, I'm Asian-American, and I've got more experience than you've had years on this earth, I'd imagine. So STFU.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Remember that supposed insider who told Ted last week re: Jake/Reese that Reese is worried about Jake--she wants to help him." When I read that, that indicated to me TOTAL BEARD. So yeah, that's my guess what Ted's comment means today. She knows big time.

    Oh that's nice, Offended.

Let me ask you - all the times this song has been played in clubs through the years have you stormed up to the DJ to tell him how offended you were? What was the outcome of that?

    ReplyDelete
  40. LOL that's what I've always thought too. But for some reason it just rubbed me the wrong way when I turned on the computer this morning. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Astonished, actually, I imagine you would be pretty astonished that someone else might have feelings - but no, years ago I was more apt let things like that slide. I don't any longer.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ok ok ... everybody... We were not trying to culturally offend anyone. Like Wicked said before it was just a song in a theme. We apologize if we offended.

The song is only here for one day, most of us are here longer, so let's try to find some way to find resolution and not make this into something we use to pit against one another.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Fair enough, Special! ;)

  44. When I first saw that "get ready", I thought it was a reference to get ready for more of this couple.

  46. Austin's role on FNL has generated a bit of controversy. Some people are expecting the worst and are saying that the teacher/student relationship is "icky". Others are saying that it's very common for students to have a crush on their teachers and they don't think the storyline will go too far.

Did you read these comments on NBC's Web site BV? I haven't checked if there were FNL boards over there. I started to watch FNL this season and I thought a show like that wouldn't shy away from controversial topics and would attract a like-minded audience.

I liked Rendition a lot (saw it twice) and Jake was very good in it. Yet count me among those who are surprised to see his performance on Esquire's list. All I can think of right now is timing, timing, timing, timing.

Special, when that Reeke business started I thought that Ted would feign to lose interest and move on. Yet he's more insistent than ever and doesn't seem to fear Witherspoon's wrath. Wouldn't be surprised to learn that he has some special goodies stashed somewhere.

I can hardly post these days as I'm very busy - I miss you! Can't wait for my schedule to "loosen up" a bit so I can come back more regularly.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Frenchy, I've read these types of comments about the student/teacher relationship between Noah Barnett (Austin) and Julie on several sites: TV Guide, Television Without Pity, FNL Insider, IMDB and a few others. I think the story will play out in a way that will satisfy the diehard FNL fans. They seem to be very protective toward the main characters on the show. The good news though is that there are a lot of positive comments about Austin out there.

Also wanted to mention that Ted's column is titled "Packaged Goods". He mentions Reese and Jake in the paragraph directly below that title.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Let me ask you - all the times this song has been played in clubs through the years have you stormed up to the DJ to tell him how offended you were? What was the outcome of that?

I was around when this song first was released - and I have been listening to it in clubs since before you were born, probably. So don't you dare assume to know what I may or may not have asked any DJ about it. Maybe I told him to stick where the sun don't shine, for all you know. All you need to know is that right now, I think it is politically incorrect. Period.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I tend to think Ted is credible and believable when he reports something that has already happened. I can't always buy some of the things that he hints at as possibilities for the future.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well, i wouldn't call what Ted does and says about Jake's personal life as "goodies". I support Jake and Austin but I don't support what Ted does. He is a gossip columnist plain and simple. There may be some truth to what he says but there is sure a lot of embelishments. Jake, Austin and Reese are real people and making claims about their " gay friends" turning on them, babytile, sleeping around, etc. is not "goodies" imo. It is gossip and is just as calculated as what PR people do.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love Ted. He's not afraid to take anyone on. The way he keeps calling this sham out is a hoot. And Thanks Ted too, for confirming for us that Reese knows what it is all about.

On another subject, did anyone see JJ's comment that his sex tape was leaked by someone big, someone everyone knows. Not suggesting it was Jake. But I do wonder who else had a big ax to grind.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ok, I really want to get the song/post title connection because I'm usually good at these things! Nothing obvious is striking me, but does it have anything to do with the first letters in the song title? T = Toothy, J = Jake. Uh, "ese"? lol.

Had there been no Robert Downey Jr (and who wants to live in that world?) in Zodiac, I think Jake would've had his Graysmith role highlighted instead. I'm pretty pleased that Esquire noted perfectly what makes Jake's acting in Rendition great, though - the stillness, the economy, the subtlety; knowing that less is more for this role. He definitely learned that skill early on and he's used it masterfully in his last three roles. I agree with special that there's power in his restraint. I also agree that Zodiac and Rendition are transitional roles for him and I think his future roles are going to retain a maturity and new solidness.* I think over time these films will earn greater respect and Jake's acting with them. It's a nice testament to his talent that all is not revealed by him in one viewing.

*Nailed remains to be seen, lol. What I do know is that Jake was born to do more screwball comedy besides Bubble Boy.

    ReplyDelete
  53. M: I saw the sex tape, is JJ saying it really was himself in it? OMG! LOL. I don't think it was anyone well known with an axe to grind whoever released it, but it sounds like a good strategy for JJ to say, ya know?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Maybe the sex tape was released by Ted, or someone he knows. Payback for trying to take his place on the gossip throne?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Why would Ted do that? I'm thinking it's Perez.

Maybe it's Jake for payback!!! (I'm teasing but who knows).

    ReplyDelete
  56. I just got back from seeing the director's cut of Zodiac. I'll post more tomorrow, but I did want to say that seeing it after seeing Rendition that maybe I can see why they include the latter in Esquire, although I'm still not convinced it was worthy of being singled out. I think he is really good in both, and one of the scenes I think he does particularly well in Zodiac is in the restaurant on the first date with Chloe S. But I was more conscious of his being "Jake" in Zodiac than when I saw Rendition, and there is more of an aged quality to his performance in the latter.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Seeing JJ in that sex tape was more Rendition (torture) than Zodiac (heavenly). Sorry, OT. lol

    ReplyDelete
  58. JJ sex tape is boring.
Is he really the person in it? I don't know him, I can't recall seeing pictures of him (well, I visited his blog twice).

McKellen Wants Timberlake To Play Him In Movie

London, Nov 17 - Ian McKellen, the lead actor of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, revealed he would like pop star Justin Timberlake to portray him in a movie on his life.

If there was a musical based on his life, McKellen thinks Timberlake would be perfect for the role saying, 'Justin vaguely resembles people in my family, and I think he is really talented,' contactmusic.com quoted him as saying.

McKellen is gay and actively involved in gay rights group Stonewall. He, however, is upset with current attitudes towards homosexuality.

When asked about the success of 'Brokeback Mountain', he said: 'I got very upset when one of the actors (Jake Gyllenhaal) said it was the most terrifying job he'd ever had because it involved him kissing another man. Imagine how rude that is. Suppose I'd said the most appalling thing I ever had to do was kiss Helen Mirren.'

  61. Sorry but I turned off the sound on my laptop and don't remember the lyrics of Turning Japanese, so I am kind of confused by all the disussion about it. Only thing I remember is that I always found this song vaguely irritating. But one thing makes me curious, you said last week the theme was Crazy, what is the theme this week then?

So according to Ted Reese knows, everything. Good to know.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Timberlake as McKellen? Oh please. As for that quote in bold is a rehash of something McKellen said looong ago.

  63. Hmm, no I dont think I need to see the actual sex tape. I may be one of the few people on the planet that never watched Paris Hilton's either. Now if Jake ever has one, that's another story. I may have to quit my job so I can watch that one 24/7. Seriously though, I do believe that Karma settles all matters, good and bad.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Seems like Ted is trying to warn Jake big-time that he can't keep this going much longer before someone does out him. I can imagine Ted's assembling quite a Greek chorus shouting 'out him' on the sidelines.

Just hoping that this means that Hawaii will be cancelled but think that Jake's team may be a little too slow on the up-take to read the signs.

Guess we'll see what happens over the next few days. The sooner its over the better really for all concerned.

or the blond tall guy Jake is talking to at the beginning of the flynet video.

  80. Saw the Director's Cut of ZODIAC last night, what a powerful film, incredible performances. Jake in particular quite strong in what is the thankless role in the film--to play quiet, somewhat colorless "boy scout" as he is called a few times is not easy and he nails it beautifully. Risky role to take on as it is not showy on the surface but gains in quiet power as the film unfolds. Bravo to all involved.
