Southern Comfort

Sounds like Jake is settling down just fine in South Carolina and enjoying the fine Southern charm. Not that he hasn't been touched by the Texas twist on it. But South Carolina will do their best to show them how charming they can be too.

What will he find in the Palmetto State? As they say, "smiling faces, beautiful places". South Carolina is full of natural beauty from the waterfalls in the west to their famous coastline. Including a Spring Break destination at Myrtle Beach. And not mention South of the Border, the rest stop and road side attraction, just "south of the border" between North Carolina and South Carolina in Dillon. Any road trip down I-95 has to include South of the Border, in all its camp glory. Fireworks, you need fireworks?

But there is more to SC than that and much more to explore over the coming weeks.

There is a proud Southern culture steeped in tradition in South Carolina. People proud of their Southern roots and their state. You will find many with South Carolinian roots or deep transplanted ones, like writer/director Alan Ball, musician Dizzy Gillespie, author William Gibson, James Brown, Jesse Jackson, baseball legend "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, actress Andie McDowell, author Pat Conroy, and singer Darius Rucker, who most would call Hootie as in Hootie and the Blowfish, which came out of Columbia and the University of South Carolina. All are proud Carolinians.

So for the next few weeks Jake will get to enjoy the sounds of southern drawls, great food, great times, and lots of sweet tea. And surely the attention of many good southern belles and maybe a few beaus too.

The South might not rise again, but with Jake there you never know what might rise.

  1. Today is the first anniversary of the Va. Tech shootings. Hard to believe. The community there has really come together and supported each other in a way that is great to see.

  2. The incident at Va. Tech seems like something that both happened recently and years ago to me. I'd also forgotten how many people had been killed.

The South is a part of the country I have spent practically no time in. You certainly make South Carolina sound appealing with your posts; I guess one of these days I will have to check it out. I think part of my reluctance to travel to the South is that I think it will make me a hardcore New Yorker, and that as long as I keep going out West instead I'm still a Westerner. A bit illogical I know, given how long I've now been in NY.

  3. I haven't been to the South a lot, but my SO has travelled to the South and West quite a bit, and has a place in his heart for both. We almost moved to the Norfolk/VA Beach area. From my travels, I love it - its history, warmth and charm, and of course the charming speech. Such a terrible tragedy at VA Tech - glad to hear people are there for each other.

Hope Jake and everyone filming Nailed will enjoy and have a great time! :)

  4. I have been to South Carolina several times and have had great times each and every time I have gone.

Although I am not one for the heat of the summer I find myself either wilting (hopefully somewhat ladylike)or looking for the coolness of the shade and a cold sweet tea, truly the house wine of the South. There are reasons why things move much slower in the South than other places. : ) Spring and fall are beautiful there.

That is not say that everything is wonderful. The past history still echos in some places and people and tolerance sometimes is not as apparent. But the majority of people that I have met there have some of the friendliest and hospitable.

My favorite place in SC has to Charleston, the city that is a refined southern lady and a true steel magnolia. It also is gaining a reputation as one of the great dining cities of the Southeast US.

  5. We go to Hilton Head, SC every year with the dogs. Tink loves it there!

I still feel there's something I'm missing out of this latest Ted. Maybe I'm just trying to read too much into it.

Boy, she has some goood makeup artists working for her!

  9. Wicked, I feel that way about Ted's answer to Tom's letter; since Ted has previously said TT only does it in public with the boyfriend, so why make it sound otherwise? Plus in that same column you have the Reese mention, and Nicole and Tom. Is he implying TT is in danger of becoming a Larry Craig?

Regarding the article mention, I think NETB may be right, that it is just a reference to TT knowing it all, so he could write that article. Or maybe he's going to be a source?

Call me crazy, but I just keep getting the feeling something is up.

  10. Anon 1:05- you have to use a name to post here. Otherwise you will be deleted. Sorry, but we've had this policy since the beginning of this blog. Just make up a name.

Bad Seed and Destiny- I wish I knew what I was missing. I agree with Destiny. I too have a nagging feeling that something is up. No clue what.

Plus in that same column you have the Reese mention, and Nicole and Tom.

I've noticed Ted putting someone in the featured celebrities section and not including them in that day's column, but including them the next day. He's done it a few times now.

  11. I hear ya, exposed. No mascara, skin tone eyeshadow, a 'natural' daytime look and they all think its 'no makeup'. what bs. Reese actually has alot of pigmented spots [sun damage] and freckles on her face skin so when you cant see them you frickin know shes wearing a load of makeup.

Special K wilts in heat, I thot it was in too much o that creamy white stuff. ya know, milk.

  12. So who else in Nailed?

Paul Ruebens aka Pee Wee Herman

    Paul Ruebens in Nailed

My question will he sing Deep in the Heart of Texas (Pee Wee's Big Adventure)?

  13. I can attest to how good the sweet tea is down South. I am not sure why but they can't seem to match it up North.

I was also thinking that an article written in a major newspaper maybe getting direct info from Jake/TT. Ted did say that Jake/TT was in negotiation with Time or Newsweek so they may already have info from Jake which they can use with his permission as long as his name is not used directly. .

  14. I'm not a big fan of summer heat in the east and south, too humid. And given the similarity in weather, I don't understand why it is almost impossible to get a decent glass of ice tea in NY.

I like Paul Rubens/Pee Wee, although I don't remember him singing about Texas. I can see Jake getting all silly and singing that song too.

  15. To get Sweet Tea --

You have use at least 1 to 1 1/2 CUPS of sugar for 2 quarts of tea.

2 cups boiling water and 6 teabags*
Pour water over tea bags cover and steep for around 15 minute.

You then put the sugar in to the hot steeped tea and stir and stir until dissolved AND THEN you add the cold water.

    Chill and serve.

*Some recipes call for a pinch (1/8 teaspoon)of baking soda with the tea bags.

  17. I just got my mail in the box and
there was my JFC DVD! Austin is
100% gorgeous! I cannot wait to
see it this weekend. Tom must really have a lucky touch for Ted
to publish his E-mails. Keep up
the good work. I hope Jake's new
    movie does great! Wicked, what's
    your opinion of Ted's latest
reply to Tom? It does sound like
something is up. Be sure and let
me know if you eventually get the
    original Toothy articles and BIs
up sometime. Thanks for your trouble. You all do an outstanding
    job.

I'd better go and read Ted again, I'm obviously missing something ...

  20. James Caan is also supposed to be in the movie too. Very eclectic cast, but I like it!

  21. I still read it as a simple reference to a past BI, I don't think he's saying it's current or involves anyone else - at all.

Reese is in the column btw; she's one of the tell-all suggestions on the first page.

  23. I think this is the Ted that is stumping people.

    Something to Bitch About

Love how the L.A. Times decides to ram women for their plastic surgery selections right after we did the same taking Simon Cowell to task for picking on poor Carly and Ramiele’s appearances while letting sacred scalpel cow Dolly Parton off diss-free. That’s pretty effed up. And apparently, so, too, thinks the venerable Times, as it's choosing to weigh in now, as well, on women like Priscilla Presley and how they inject/tuck themselves into unrecognizable contortions. We hear the copycat paper’s also working on a piece on closeted male movie stars. What’s the byline going to be, Toothy Tile?

  24. Today's issue of USA Today has an article on "secret" celebrity couples. Reeke is mentioned. The interesting bits-

"In a way, when these couples act very coy to the press and the public, it keeps the fire of interest burning even brighter," says OK! magazine editor Sarah Ivens. "There are lots of photos to suggest otherwise. By denying it, they keep interest going. If I was a savvy person with an album to promote, I'd do it as well."

    The mention of Reeke-

    EESTABLISHED, BUT STILL PRIVATE

Reese Witherspoon, 32, and Jake Gyllenhaal, 27

Early signs: The pair were first spotted getting cozy in March 2007. By June, any signs of romance had cooled, but by fall all indications pointed back to a union as the two were photographed strolling together on the streets of Italy. Just weeks later, People reported they checked in at Carneros Inn in the Napa Valley.
The scoop: While the two still have not confirmed they're dating, Ryan Phillippe, Witherspoon's ex-husband, told USA TODAY that he avoids magazines featuring photos of the two. "It's bizarre," Phillippe said. "There's plenty of times when I say, 'What a strange situation I've found myself in.' But at a certain point you know it's going to happen, so you are prepared in some fashion."
    Handholding: No
    Talking to media: No
    Vacation together: Yes

Me too, London! Aren't you supposed to do that in an adult cinema anyway? Hearing that Paul Reubens is in Nailed makes it sound so much better to me. Reubens was great in the movie version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And James Caan too! Excellent.

London reese was also on the list the day before and was not featured in that column.

Tom, Ted's been doing quite a bit lately with numerous celebs. I wonder if he might have too much in the column some days and when he cuts the blurb about a particular celeb that person's name sometimes stays in the featured celeb part.

That USA Today story really shows how celebs use their personal lives to keep themselves in the media.

ITA London. Jake has done some things that have confused me lately but I just dont think he is dumb enough to risk his reputation by doing something so dumb. No matter what Jakes plans are I think he always has Austin to go home to.

  29. I wasn't aware there were paps in SC. I'd love to know which agency took those set pics.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Paps can be anywhere. All you need is someone who is willing to film and sell it to an agency. There has been lots of press in SC about Nailed filming. I bet it was a local doing the pics. May even have been the local tv station. They did a report on it already.

Another example of paps anywhere. There were paps in the small Isle of Man (in the UK) when Zac Efron was filming his movie too.

  35. How till Ms. Pieces is "accidentally" papped in SC? Or will she make Mr. Witherhaal come to her, like usual? After all, it's all about Reese.

  36. Looks like the set pics were taken by Jake's personal pap agency, Flynet. And they insinuate that he was rude to some female fans waiting for him too.

    ReplyDelete
  37. "Gyllenhaal appeared to be sullen and was not in the mood for some unconditional worship by the group of local female fans who gathered to catch a glimpse of the super-star heart throb from "Brokeback Mountain." Jake ignored all the "love" and moved to the indoor set."

I wonder where Stephanie got that caption from. He sure doesn't look happy. I guess its hard being a movie star these days : /

    ReplyDelete
  38. Well, thank you, Flynet for not using the easy spin of grumpyface = missing Reese. Better to tell it like it is! Jake In Not Receiving Fans Today Shock! (:

I'm awaiting a Jake and Paul Reubens photo or two; I'm one of the excited ones to hear Paul is part of the cast. Nailed just got plausible for me! James Caan is pretty alright, too. ;) The countdown also begins for set visits by a certain someone, and I don't mean the certain someone with kids who no doubt already has it in her schedule.

  41. The good news is that Jake looks good in the pics, fit I mean, and I like the darker hair. I will withhold judgement re snubbing the fans to see if it is just a one time thing - maybe he had to be somewhere and his director is known to have a temper - or if it is indeed a real trend. Not good timing to blow off his fans. They are dwindling as it is. Contrast that to Johnny Depp who has had up to a 1000 fans waiting for him while filming in Chicago. Talk is he has gone out of his way to greet them. At least we are getting more pics from this film set.

  42. Jake is looking good, albeit grumpy.

It's about time you got an avatar Special, I just knew you'd have to include the Sox in it. :D

Johnny Depp was voted most fan-friendly celebrity according to a poll. He's a great guy, very down-to-earth and a wonderful actor. Sniff, I used to think Heath would be the next Johnny Depp...

  51. Spesh just sent me the link to Azariah Southworth's story on Perez. This story was also posted on WFT2. It will be interesting to see what the Christian community does with this. I think they will try and ignore it. I wonder if Southworth will let them.

Enjoyed that Umbrella Man video. The song was done by bandleader Kay Kyser. My grandfather loved him. Kyser had a guy in his band with one of the greatest names in show biz- Ish Kabibble! My grandfather loved this name so much that he used to say, "Oh, Ish Kabibble!" as an exclamation.
