Rhyming time

When is a pickle not a pickle? When it's a pickle pop.

This offbeat Texas treat of frozen pickle juice, is cool but not too sweet. And that's no chilly dilly!

The healthy alternative to sugary sweet frozen treats, Bob's Pickle Pops have now been USDA approved for schools across the U.S. Why? Seems there be a lot of pickle juice drinking in South Texas and pickle juice and hot Texas days just lend themselves to frozen adventure.

John Howard was already selling pickles at the roller rink's snack bar, so he started to freeze his leftover pickle juice -- really the brine from the pickle jars -- and sell that, too. "We sold 200 to 300 every Friday and Saturday night," he says. Then they began to run out of pickle juice.

Because they think big in Texas, Howard got a "giant hydraulic press" last October to process the pickles. "We're the first to squeeze our own pickle juice," he says. They squeeze about 10 gallons -- about 150 pickles -- at a time and have nothing left at the end but the skins. No more leftover brine: Pickle Sickles are made only from freshly pressed pickles.

Will these become a the new next thing? Who's to say, but seems like it is catching on with 20,000 sold a month and now at the Six Flags over Texas amusement park.

And for something a little spicier - Jalapeno pickle pop. Somehow you can see that with some tequila and a dare.

The Texas Treat with a Juicy Tale.

Pickles? huh?

Gotta think Nichols.

  3. Jake's gotta new Reece!

From this article it looks like Jake will be co-staring with another Reece. Reece Ritchie.

"The trip followed hard on the heels of being chosen for his latest assignment starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal for the first-part of an expected trilogy in the film based on the video game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

The Disney film, which is being directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and Donnie Brasco) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, is due for release in August 2009.

It follows the Playstation computer game classic about a prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world."

  4. You got that right vlassic. He's one of those NY deli pickles you see sitting on the counter in a huge jar. :D

Monk, you've done it again. I think you're absolutely right about Ted's fish reference. Also ties back to the recent restaurant chatter.

Jake sure seems like he's suddenly trying to make as many movies as possible. I wonder why?

You can say that about Austy too.

  9. Hate to say this, but Reece Ritchie has the looks to play the PoP way more than Jake does.

  10. I loved this part of the WaPo story-

In 2000, the Philadelphia Eagles played the Dallas Cowboys in the season opener in Dallas. The temperature was well over 100 degrees. The Eagles, however, appeared surprisingly refreshed and whomped the Cowboys, 41-14.

Some credit for their victory was given to the pickle juice their trainer had them drink to stay hydrated and avoid cramps.

I remember that game! I'm pretty sure the Eagles are still using the pickle juice too.

  11. AfterElton has opened voting for the 100 Sexiest Men this year (voting only welcome from gay/bi man). Jake won it last year, but doesn't look like he's making into voter's top 10 this year. Ironically, the editor on this page asks if a gay man will win this year. Jake, think how popular you would be if you came out!:

  12. Reese and Justin were both in SC recently but there were no sightings at all?! Guess they'll come out later.

Well, it was another gruelling day at the shoot. Jake Gyllenhall seems to be opening up a lot more and conversing with the older adults, he is a likable guy. He never seems to run out of enthusiasm and energy even after we've been on the shoot for almost 15 hours straight! I heard Reese Witherspoon was in town lately to meet up with him and Justin Timberlake has been around too so he could spend time with Jessica Biel.

  13. That ^^^ blogger is trying too hard to impress his readers:

Seems like no matter where I stood on the set these stars kept walking right by me and almost running into me! Sheesh! After one scene Jake Gyllenhall and Jessica Biel came over and stood right in front of me, there were lots of places they could have stood but nooooo....it had to be right in front of Big A, who was just minding his own business, not doing nothing to nobody! Anyway Jessica starts talking to Jake about her boyfriend (Justin Timberlake) and how it's hard for them to see each other etc. etc. and I'm thinking to myself "My blog readers don't want to hear about this gossip type stuff, they are the sort of people who read The Wall Street Journal and do the New York Times crossword puzzle in 30 minutes! Not the sort of people who read STAR magazine!" So I won't bore you with the stuff they talked about.

  17. That blogger really does come across like he is trying way too hard to impress people. Interesting that there were no reported sightings of either Reese or Justin, at least not that I've heard of. Maybe I missed them.

  18. Who here would eat one of these pickle pops?

    ReplyDelete
  19. There is something a bit odd about that blog sigting, and I don't buy any of it. It indeed sounds like someone trying to impress people.

I would try a pickle pop, I think it might be refreshing on a hot day, especially washed down with a beer or some tequila.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If that PoP story is correct then I guess he won't be doing 2012 with the other Reese, will he?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yay about POP! I think it will be very well done, and lots of fun for him to do. A good old fashioned blockbustah is good for the career! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh, and cute post btw too! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would eat a pickle pop too. Or melt it over my chips :)

Anyone remember a BV about Petunia Pickle-Pop?

Talking of Ted, nice Ted today - he has taste :*

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yup, I would, since I have all kinds of pickle juice left in the fridge that I use for different things when I cook. A little here and a little there.

But I wonder if you broke up the pickle pop a bit till it was slushy and put a little of this and little that with some tequila, you could make yourself one heck of a cocktail.

Nifty way of getting pickled, must say.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'd like to try the Jalapeno pickle pop, with a shot of tequila (but no dares - well maybe)! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  26. As fond as I am for tequila, I can't believe I didn't think of getting pickled. I just may have to try that drink suggestion, I've tried stranger ones.

I also keep all kinds of pickle jars for cooking too, but I rarely eat the pickles, except for the bread and butter pickles that my mom makes.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Homemade pickles --well there's a flashback, of endless cucumbers to make bread & butter pickles with sweet onions, and the bright green lime pickles.

Then making PA Dutch chow chow (pickled veggies --carrots, onions, cauliflower, cucumbers, cabbage, celery, corn, peppers, beans )everything that was left over from the gardens.

Living in the south for part of the time, got to enjoy pickles made from watermelon rinds, and pickled peaches.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love pickles and would gladly try a pickle pop. I'll eat that chow chow too, Spesh!

It is looking more and more like PoP is a go. What is the fate of the unnamed Moon Project, aka Giant Leap, then?

  30. It's the battle of the dueling Dusty Springfield movies! In one corner, weighing in at...not much...is Nicole Kidman, in a Fox 2000 release written by Michael Cunningham. In the other, weighing in at even less, is Universal's own take, with Kristin Chenoweth attached to star.

Nicole as Dusty...I think a little part of my soul has died.

  33. I am sorry. Nicole Kidman as Dusty Springfield? Isn't enough that she has taken Samantha from Bewitched from me?!

    WTF.

I say this as someone who admires Nicole's acting, but not for Bewitched, and bloody not fracking well for the goddess that is Dusty Springfield.

    Again, WTF?!

  34. i like nk. shes not very friendly to st8 women but she has lesbian friends before it was the popular thing to do. you wont believe it but i know a couple who know her.she invites them to places and go to her movie sets. they say she's very nice.

  35. "Jake sure seems like he's suddenly trying to make as many movies as possible. I wonder why?"

I think that Jake's pr people want Jake to look as if he's being considered for as many movies as possible. We'll see if any of this interest actually materializes.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Not saying Nicole hasn't done some good movies. Moulin being one of them. But I just don't think she is the right choice for Dusty, total miscasting. This is when they plug the biggest name into a movie they can get rather than getting the best actor to portray the person. I just can't see her be the powerhouse that Dusty was when she sang. She may be able to handle the off stage part of the story better than Chenowith, but Chenowith has the chops to even attempt to take on Dusty the performer, even if they use Dusty's voice.

    ReplyDelete
  37. chops?!CHOPS??!! all ya need is good sound engineers, they can make Saved by the Bell Screech sound like Pavoratti or Reese like June Carter Cash. I rest my case!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Dusty is all about her amazing, SOUL-ful voice - she lets everything out - she is not reserved; she is (was) moving and even raunchy. That's my problem with Nicole playing Dusty - not that I don't think Nicole is a fine actress or human being. She would have to give it her gritty all in a moving, powerful, let-down-all-guards way. I don't see it. I see Nicole doing a nuanced performance of Dusty's ambiguous, early-closeted life - I do not see Nicole belting out Son of a Preacher Man or 24 Hours from Tulsa.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey Daff, how are ya? Nice to see you. Dusty? One of my absolute faves too - you are right about SOUL-ful, almost crying. Anyone Who Had a Heart. *sigh* Cute post today, guys! :*

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi Daffodil! Feels like old times to see you posting on a Friday afternoon. :-)

Totally agree about NK. I find her performances are generally reserved and cold. I have no opinion of her as a person, although I have to wonder about someone who'd put up with Tom Cruise. But I wouldn't be suprised in the least if NK had lesbian friends since there are plenty of rumors about her.

    Nailed looks stupid.
Hope Austin has a good life.
I'm 'Brenda Sue'. not my rl name but i used the same inits as blogger name and reverse inits for city name. I was gonna send email to spesh/wicked w/copy of my question but i thot i had time cos Tom said his tt quest took months to ted to answer. wtf it took him 3 days for mine.
I wrote the ted quest to see if it was Austin-gg or Chris-fish. didnt expect 'fox' -wtf was that??!

  45. Hey Daff! Make sure you check out tomorrow's post- you are an influence on it! :) All this talk about Dusty makes me think we should put her on tomorrow.

    Kacie and Bad Seed,
I think Ted is saying that the BF is still the same one and that he is a fox, as in goodlooking, as Ted has said before. I think if Ted thought there was a new BF he would have said that.

  47. but wicked i was expecting ted to say goose cos hes alwys saying tt bf is gray goose. why did he say 'neither' now? and say fox? methinks he's playing games. :(

    ReplyDelete
  48. Bad Seed, why wouldn't Ted have either done a BI on it or have mentioned it somewhere in his column if TT and BF had broken up? He's said so in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Bad Seed, why are you just dismissing Nailed when it hasn't even finished filming yet? And such negativity about Jake's aura. Feeding off of negativity helps nothing. Hope Jake and Austin have good lives.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Thanks Bad Seed for explaining the fish reference. I did not connect it to CF at all, and maybe neither did Ted. He does have a wedding on his mind afterall and is not repsonsible for clear thinking right now. Even when Ted is firing on all cylinders, he is so obtuse he usually gives me a headache trying to figure out what the hell he means. Anyway, I am happy that he makes it clear there is still a boyfriend at all. Personally, I am 99% sure Austin is/was the boyfriend but I do keep 1% open for Chris.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I don't think Ted knows Chris Fischer from a hole in the wall. I do, and I did not get your fish reference, Bad Seed. And Austin is a fox.

    ReplyDelete
  52. sorry postiivty but Nailed is a vehicle for Biehl and a fluff piece for Jake, to get his name known in the commercial movie market. can anyone say this Nailed movie was a Reese inluence? Def. the plot is bad and laughable [not in a good way] the other actors are 10 minutes away from selling jewlry on home shopping club.

Jakes aura is flat, period. his fan sites are deserted his sex appeal disapeared when his tongue and flirting and ambivelent sexuality did. dont confuse negativity w/realism.

yes Ted would know the fish ref 'Chris Fischer' esp w/the Jake opening retaurant biz story goin around and CFs name all over it.

    surprised none of you did.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I don't think of Russell as a commercial director, and I don't think this picture sounds like it will be a mainstream movie either. The only one of his films that you could say that about was Flirting with Disaster.

I will admit to not picking up on the fish reference until Monk mentioned it in the previous thread. Sometimes I think too literally. But it is clear to me that Ted is saying that the bf is Austin. I think the reference to Chris was just a way to make reference to Jake and the story, and to be a bit of a tease because I'm sure Ted is aware that at one time people were speculating about Chris. This is his way of saying it is not Chris.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Bad seed, calm down. I don't really agree with your assessment of Nailed. It hasn't even finished filming and we know squat about it anyway. It is a comedy for God sake. I thought Donnie Darko and his giant rabbit sounded rather lame too, but turned out to be a rather unique movie. A vehicle for Biel, maybe so, what is the problem with that, I really don't get it.
So when he does no movie his career is on the rocks , when he does movies his career is on the rocks again. Jeez.

    ReplyDelete
  55. "sorry postiivty but Nailed is a vehicle for Biehl and a fluff piece for Jake, to get his name known in the commercial movie market"

Nonsense - have you even read the script? This film is everything but a "commercial movie".

"the other actors are 10 minutes away from selling jewlry on home shopping club."

Are you talking about Catherine Keener, Tracy Morgan and James Marsden? No comment needed here.

    "Jakes aura is flat, period"

That is your OPINION, not "realism", period.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Jakes aura has gone flat.

I would say gone for now, but hopefully not for good!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Well, I got the fish reference immediately but I don't think Ted would be that interested as he doesn't have any doubt about the bf's ID. Fox was just a compliment :)
