Out Spotlight LII

Today's Out Spotlight is Georgina Beyer

Georgina Beyer was the world's first openly transsexual Member of Parliament, and served as an MP for the Labour Party of New Zealand from November 1999 until February 2007.

Georgina was born George Bertrand, a Māori, in 1957 in Wellington, New Zealand and spent the first four years on her grandparents' farm in Taranaki. She then went to move to Wellington to live with her mother, who had subsequently married Colin Beyer, a prominent lawyer and businessman. Shortly after leaving school she discovered Wellington's gay scene, and at 17 she was transgender.

Taking the name Georgina, she became a stripper and prostitute working in nightclubs and on the street. Later found herself in Kings Cross, Sydney, probably Australasia's most notorious red-light district. It was in King's Cross that she brutally gang raped. The incident pushed her to begin to change the course of her life.

Beyer returned to New Zealand and while continuing to work as a stripper and drag queen, she started to look for in acting with gradual increasing success. In 1984 she finally underwent sexual reassignment surgery. She received a nomination for best actress in the Guild of Film & Television Arts Award in 1987 and continued acting in film, TV, theatre and cabaret. She went on to work as a radio host in the town of Carterton. While there she began to take interest in local politics, first winning election to a local school board, and then being elected mayor of Carterton in 1995, which served as until 2000. Beyer became the world's first transsexual mayor. In 1999 she surprised many by winning the Wairarapa seat for Labour and become the world's first transsexual MP.

In June 2004, Beyer spoke at the UniQ: Queer Students Association national conference at Waikato University, Hamilton, where in a moving, speech she reiterated her support for the Civil Union Bill, although did not believe that gay marriage would be legal in New Zealand for at least 20 years, and expressed fear that gay and lesbian New Zealanders were facing the beginning of a turbulent time whereby their rights gained since homosexual law reform in 1986 would be questioned and attacked. She broke down while referring to the internal battle within herself that she had to face both with her gender identity but her ethnic identity in the House of Parliament.

In 2004, a bill in Beyer's name was written and introduced to Parliament. The Bill was intended to include "gender identity" as a ground under the Human Rights Act 1993, and thereby prohibit discrimination against people because of their gender identity. The bill had been Labour Party policy in the 1999 and 2002 election manifestos. It attracted controversy, but Beyer always maintained that it was simply ensuring basic human rights for transgendered people, and that it was only clarifying what either was or should have been the law already. In 2006 the acting Solicitor-General wrote a legal opinion that indicated that transgendered people were already within the ambit of the Human Rights Act, and Beyer was able to withdraw her bill. She said that this was legal authority that was "good enough for her".

Beyer retired from public office in 2007. She continues to speak and pursue her passions.

Beyer has been the subject of a book Change For The Better - the story of Georgina Beyer as told to Cathy Casey. Published in 1999 and it was reprinted again in 2002 by Random House New Zealand Ltd. There has also been a documentary about Georgina as well titled, Georgie Girl, that came out in 2002. Beyer also was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars in 2005.

"It is important to allow people who want to be positive contributors of our society regardless of sex, race, creed and gender to reach their human potential. We need all human potential to make our communities thrive, to make them more vital, the very centre of our reason for being and living. The most important thing at the end of the day is about people, people and people!" - Georgina Beyer

First I have to say this so everyone understands why I posting. Milk has me fired up.

I wonder why Jake hasn't come back from London since PoP filming is over. Maybe Jake did buy a house there and intends to stay. Actually I wouldn't mind. That would be better then seeing him come back here living his lies and being the coward that he is.

    Go see Milk Jake....................

  3. For over 1 1/2yrs Jake has become so homophobic about his public perception that he's only been photographed with Reese and her kids-no family, no friends. Jake would never, ever be photographed going to see Milk. His PR team and Reese wouldn't allow it and they probably would tell him that being seen going to see Milk would confirm people he's gay. They don't seem to be telling him that faking with Reese and only being photographed is actually making him look more gay.

  4. and only being photographed
Sorry should be only being photographed with her and her kids is actually making him look more gay.

  5. How do you know that Pop has finished filming? I don't recall reading that on IMDB or any google alerts, did I miss something?

Jake ain't moving to London, that was just some PR for some UK real estate, they do they everytime an american actor films over there.

If jake flew by private jet as he does sometimes, we won't see the usual tedious pap pics for a while IMO.

  6. While I agree with you Never Happen about Jake, I do think he'll probably see Milk because as a member of the Academy he'll get a copy of Milk on dvd as part of the movie's Oscar campaign.

Totally agree with you Tom about Milk; it's a very powerful film, and Milk pushed people to come out, and that is very much tied up with the success the movement had. Milk felt so strongly about people being out that he apparently even believed in outing people.

Personally I think people who beard like Jake deserve to be outed. I think bearding when you're someone this prominent is no different than closeted gay politicians who vote against gay rights.

    Another great Spotlight today.

  7. He's been away since June and really since the Spring why can't he just finish up quietly and wind down?

PoP was physical grueling, Nailed was a rollercoaster - this has been a tough year of losses for him. He's going to need some kind of a break.

  8. Great spotlight. Is it my ignorance is is there more transsexuals than we know? I can't remember some other Spotlights but it looks like most are men who want to be women. Is it the emotional flexibility women have? (Or makeup and breasts LOL??) Very few seem to want to be men. Are men that boring LOL?

Gemma broke up with her bf she met on PoP. Wonder how long (not if, but when) until rumors of Jake and Gemma hooking up. My guess 3-6 months before PoP pops. Anyone taking bets?

I guess is Jake being a homebody wants to see family and get home, get back to his routines (hopefully without R), catch up, cook, read, play with someone who has tiny feet, unconditional love, poops whenever/wherever and sleeps a lot. Oh and his dog Atticus too.

  9. Interesting spotlight. Amazing the twists and turns a life takes.

Several pics of celebs arriving at LAX this weekend, so we know paps were around, but no Jake. I think they must have at least one pap stationed there 24/7. He could have returned to the US via Dulles or Atlanta, where there would be no paps. Also close to North Carolina and Austin. I still think he and Austin are together. Ted implies they still are.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Or private jet, he and other celebs have done it before.

Also there were no pap pics when he first went to London in June, it was a fan encounter on IHJ that we found out that he was on his way to London from L.A. via Virgin Airways, the paps missed him that time.

Jake will be married to Reese by that time. Not that I'm happy about it.

  12. Reese is gonna be too busy in the chicken coop and color coordinating socks to get married this year.

  13. This comment from WFT2 sums up Rufus Wainwright's famous friends.

"Elton, Jake, Reese. Two fags and a fag hag."

  14. And trash patrol, you forgot about that. Visual checking, weighing and measuring each room trash recepticle for the 1/2 filled emptying requirement, getting in and stomping down her own trashcans for maximum load capacity and then lying in wait and monitoring the immediate perimeter area for darkness and human activity so she can safetly transfer her excess trash to the neighbors bins.

  15. Now that she is number three on HW pay scale, Reese will be too busy scratching her way back to the top.

Of course, if the last year and a half are any indication of her/PR's modus operandi, pimping out a private life for attention, maybe a sham marriage is in the works.

    ReplyDelete
  16. but it looks like most are men who want to be women.

I read somewhere that 75% of transsexuals are Male to Female and only 25% are Female to Male. Not sure where I read this, though.

  17. Jake will be married to Reese by that time. Not that I'm happy about it.

If you think Jake's fandom is near extinction now with gf/bearding (whatever you believe) getting married (real/bearding) will really kill it. Nothing kills the fans off like a celeb getting married. I don't think Jake will get married (1) he and Reese are not lovers (2) he holds marriage sacred and thats where he will draw the line at bearding

  18. Thanks Wicked. So its not my imagination, more men to women which is odd because I hate to say it, its still a "man's world" in business and politics. And the theory that everyone wants a penis, that women are "missing" one. What I hate and what reinforces it even still is in sonograms how they look for "something" to see if the babys a boy, because the girl doesn't have it. Its "missing". So it surprises me about the 75/25. I'll have to read more about it.

Talking about odd did anyone see Ent Lawyers pics for Friday? Reese is in one where she has a weird look on her face and the banner (cut off on the side) in fromt of her says "Childrens Defense Fund - Eat The Odds". She does doesn't she.

  19. Wow, quiet night. Quiet day.

I don't know; I think it's kind of nice to not have pictures of Jake so far. I hope the guy is either still working in London or if he's on his way back, he's stopped off on the east coast somewhere. Special's right. Man, the guy needs a rest. When I get back from one weekend of dogsitting, I've got mail to go through, unpacking to do, laundry to catch up on maybe, internet to catch up on (lol!), all heck is going on. When I've been dogsitting a week, it's even worse. So I can't imagine what it must be for him to come back after basically being gone an entire year. Whatever milk was in the fridge, must be goat cheese by now. Pipes are rusted closed. Mail is a year old. How does one get their mail when they're gone like he is? Is it forwarded? Does one depend on ol' Uncle Sam to get that right?

At this point, we have no idea what road he's taking. Other than we know that Reeke is probably on the agenda. So, in the meantime, everyone's just waiting. And waiting. And waiting. strumming fingers on the table, ta dum, ta dum, ta dum, ta dum

All I can say is I'm glad I have one last day of 2008 Big V coming to me tomorrow. yippeeee! The past 2 weeks have been horrendous and my homelife has gone to POT! My room is a mess, the living room is a mess with a half-baked job of decorating done, everything in my life is just cracked right now. lol. Not sure why my Decembers always end up like this. Work is the #1 culprit. Does anybody else have a busy December at work?

Oh, hey, that reminds me Congrats to Kacie on your 4-day weeks! That's great!! Couldn't have come at a better time, too, eh?

  20. Well, I'm going to make this one last post. Blogger is working real slow right now and I just don't have the patience right now for it. I was trying to post my convent trip pictures, but it wasn't working so I'm going to try tomorrow.

Convent was great. I just pray that it is sold into the right hands. One good thing. There is a cemetary on site where mother superiors & other nuns are buried, so they can't exactly rip all the land up. Cemetaries are sacred land, I think. You can't just pull them up.

Dogsitting went beautifully. The big fun on this one was that Major let me kiss on him. Major is the cat. He's 14 ot 15 years old and he's very independent (a.k.a. crotchety). It's taken several times, but this weekend, he let me lay down next to him & touch him. Kiss his head. I've never been a cat person, but the Major is beautiful. I have a real soft spot for him.

m, I have some real disappointing news!! I was hanging around on DC Forum discussion and madlori posted a comment on there that she most likely is not going to finish her sequel to Zero to the Bone. AAAAGHHH! Isn't that terrible?! Oh, I was crushed. I posted one comment on there last week & was promptly beaten down like a popcan by one poster. Geesh. Tough crowd. I wanted to argue back so bad, but they have some real tough guidelines over there and I don't need to make any enemies, lol. They were real helpful in identifying a story for me that I didn't know the name of, so I am grateful for that.

Special, these Seasons of Sharings are fantastic. All of them have been about something I did not know of. I liked the one on helping refugees and this one on the working of an AIDS vaccine is great. Wouldn't that be something if they can come up with that. Probably just a matter of time.

Okay, well, I am going to hit the hay. Gotta clear off the bed so I can even sleep on it, for gosh sakes. And no one else around to talk to so I have no choice but to go in there and face it. Tackle it. Heavy sigh. Yup, just gotta close out. Pull myself up outta this chair.
    Sure enough.

Okay, well, now I'm really gonna do it. LOLLLLL! shut up already!
See ya, if anyone's lurking tonight still. Sweet dreams to you.

  21. Oh for gosh sakes, I forgot to correct my typo.

    14 ot 15 years old = 14 or 15 years . Dagnabit!

  22. Hi PG, glad to see you've had a chance to come up for air. :-D

I think PoP is probably done, and I think Jake is probably holed up at home or somewhere else recovering from PoP and spending time with his family. Love your description Chris of him playing with someone with tiny feet.

I wonder if the fact more transsexual are men has anything to do with the fact that women's sexuality tends to be more fluid; plus it's probably easier to masquerade as a male. I really do think women are not as hard wired as men when it comes to these things, so maybe the desire to change isn't as great?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think perhapas the reason there are more male to female transexuals is because the "bottom" portion of sex reassignment surgery is almost impossible to do for females changing to males. As I understand it most females who change to males retain their vaginas because the medical options just aren't there. One famous example being the "pregnant man".

Angelina is first, who is number two?

  25. Number Two - Julia Roberts

  26. Great Spotlight today. What a life transformation!

    So true. Bravo Georgina.

  27. "Now that she is number three on HW pay scale, Reese will be too busy scratching her way back to the top."
Now that Reese & her PR can't put "HW's highest paid actress" after her name anymore, they must be scrambling to find a new title to put after her name. Even more unbelievably is that FC came out as #1 again this weekend. Why would people go see a movie that clearly is bad? People are that straved to see a movie?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Theres not much else new out there. Whats most telling than overall $$ totals is per theater. The new "Frost/Nixon" movie from Ron Howard was released in only three theaters this weekend and had the average of $60,049 per theater while 4C had $5,541 per. So really..F/N was the winner this weekend not 4C.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Btw the numbers count only the tickets sold, not the people who stayed. God only knows how many walked out. I've been hearing many people are leaving its so bad. And who knows how many underagers bought tickets to 4C so they could sneak into the better R rated movies like Role Models, Cadillac Records, Nobel Son, Punisher War Zone, Body of Lies, Religulous, Changling.

  30. Great OutSpotlight again - as always. I liked last week's too about Roland Emmerich, but I comment all the time, so I don't want to sound like a broken record telling OMG how great their Out Spotlights are, and what a wonderful informative feature it is. I think it's my fave one. So many accomplished, beautiful LGBT people that we need to know about, like Georgina. She is lovely and so right, that's it's all about what we have in common as being part of humanity, not our differences, and our individual qualities should be celebrated.

I have always loved Māori culture as well. So beautiful. My dream trip someday, Australia and New Zealand. Sigh.

Great song - I have always loved the Tim and Neil Finn of Split Enz, and then of Crowded House among other groups. Such an 80's feel to this song. And now their son Liam Finn is an up and coming musician too. I was reading the paper awhile ago and he was performing in the area, and at SXSW. Crikey. :)
