Out Spotlight LXX

Today's Out Spotlight is Rev. Elder Darlene Garner.

Rev. Garner has been a long-time leader in the Metropolitan Community Churches, the first Christian denomination created to serve the spiritual needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered community. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Rev. Garner was baptized into the National Baptist Church at the age of 7 and joined the Episcopal Church as a young adult. She came out as a lesbian in 1973 and joined MCC Washington, D.C., in 1976. She served MCC DC as Church Treasurer and Lay Delegate and later served the Mid-Atlantic District as Assistant District Coordinator. She received her clergy credentials in 1988. Rev. Garner has served as Associate Pastor of MCC in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Pastor of MCC in Baltimore, Maryland; and Senior Pastor of MCC of Northern Virginia. She also convenes the biannual MCC Conference for People of African Descent.

Before entering the professional ministry, Rev. Garner worked as a legal secretary, office manager, and Girl Scout Executive. She also worked as the Executive Director of the Philadelphia Mayor’s Commission on Sexual Minorities. The Reverend is a founding co-chair of the National Coalition of Black Lesbians and Gays, and chaired the first International Conference for Gay and Lesbian People of Color. She has served as the chaplain for an AIDS hospice and as President of the Board of Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry. She has also served as a member of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations (hearing complaints of discrimination based on sexual orientation, race, gender, and national origin) and of the West Hollywood Business License Commission. Rev. Garner has received numerous awards and citations for her service to the community.

She was elected a member of the Board of Elders of Metropolitan Community Churches in 1993. She served as Clerk of the Board of Elders from 1993 until 2003. During that time, she was also the Liaison Elder for MCC in Western Canadian, Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Europe, and various parts of the United States. She also served for two years as the Global Outreach representative and resource person for Africa.

Currently, Rev. Garner oversees MCC Region 6 congregations and leaders in Arizona, southern California, Nevada, New Mexico, southern Texas, Mexico, Central America, and South America. In addition, she manages professional risk management issues, is the Clergy Judicial Officer, and coordinates MCC’s efforts to address homophobia in the traditional Black church and race relations within MCC.

Iglesias de la Communidad Metropolitana (ICM)at is the official website for MCCs in Latin America.

Rev. Elder Darlene Garner has made it a priority to provide translations in Spanish and in Portuguese, whenever possible for distribution to the local churches, and for presentation on the website.

The website welcomes and provides information for those in GLBT coomunity searching for a religous community. The site share the message of God's unconditional love for GLBT people; telling the story of MCC; inviting interaction with visitors; and provides information and directions to local MCCs in Latin American countries in their prodominent language.

This website is an great example of how effective MCC can be when speaking in the voice and in the language of the men and women in the communities they serve.

Most of the MCC congregations are located in countries which have not traditionally embraced self-affirming lesbians and gay men, so founding and growing (even attending) these local churches has called for extraordinary acts of courage on the part of our sisters and brothers there. They 'speak truth to power'. They have taken risks daily to offer a spiritual 'home' for ALL of God's people; a commitment to securing the right of GLBT people to celebrate their sexual identity as they discover it, and always being gloriously affirming of GLBT relationships.

Rev. Garner has served as the Vice-Moderator of Metropolitan Community Churches for 2008. She was recently reappointed for a second year. In announcing the appointment, Rev. Elder Nancy L. Wilson, MCC moderator, said, "Rev. Elder Garner has a long and distinguished history of service within Metropolitan Community Churches and enjoys the full, enthusiastic and unanimous support and trust of the MCC Board of Elders."

Rev Garner has attended Ohio State University, Samaritan College, and Lancaster Theological Seminary. She is the mother of four children and has seven grandchildren.

She and her partner Leticia GarcĂa live in Monterrey, Mexico.

  8. Wow, Sienna, I'm coming over to your house for breakfast. That sounds so good.

Wow - what can one say after a Spotlight like that? It sounds like she is indeed speaking the Good Word and that love is sure radiating from her in her pictures. I would love to hear her speak someday.

What a glorious sight today. Lots & lots of people, one way in and one way out, I made it to service on time & I got a big hug from Doc instead of a shake of his head, he in his fantastic lavender suit jacket & tie. The most beautiful music and just another splendid, outstanding message. And at the end, Pastor & her associates raced down the middle of the aisle after she had told us that she was going to say "Ready, Set, Go!" and she really did. Cars lined up to get out and cars lined up into the street to get in. It was just the most gorgeous sight.

  9. And I have no idea what y'all are going to talk about today besides the great Out Spotlight, but I wanted to get a word in before I leave to go see the kids have their egghunt.

I wanted to say that on this day of hope, I want to feel hope today about our boys. And I do as long as I don't let other stuff get me down. Because all the best laid plans and all the blueprints in the world can be spread out and intended to be carried out. But all it takes is something to happen or someone to be a big influence otherwise and all of those best laid plans can just blow away in the wind. They can. Things can change and things can happen. Minds can change and no one knows what the next six months can bring.

And I can remember when I first saw this guy, this mr Jakey Gyllenhaal; it was on the cover of some mag cover and I thought, hmmm...wow, that guy is something. And then I bought my laptop and I started playing around on the internet and this was around the time pics of him & Austin came out. And I saw those bedhead pictures and man, I thought, chuckle hmmmm, now lookit that. Those guys look like they just rolled out of bed. Hmmm. And then I saw the Laker pictures and I thought, WOW, now those 2 really are hot together. I wonder. I wonder what is going on there. And I googled. I googled Jake and Austin Nichols (and I thought, who in the heck is this Austin guy? lol) and somewhere down at the bottom of that first page or the second, I don't even remember, I clicked on something interesting and up came this Oh My Godot.

And I looked at it and I was like, oh. My Dog!!! Lookit this! Wow, a whole site devoted to these guys. Lookit all this stuff! There are other people who see the same thing. This is awesome! And my little personal history was born. And I've not looked back since.

And I need to remember what it was that brought me here. It was this guy. And him & his dogs. And him & his family having breakfast or lunch outside. And it was him & his athletic crew socks, goofy as they were. And this guy is the same one in that Brokeback Mountain? Really. Well, I guess I need to see that movie. And so then I was Blindsided by that and boy, talk about things changing. And I was fascinated, too, by this story of Jake and Austin, not realizing there was more to it than just those Laker pics.

And I don't want to lose that or forget that's brought me here. Because I still believe and I still hold onto a hope that this guy will re-emerge. I really do.

Anyway, what I wanted to ask was this is something I've never asked you, Special, or Wicked, or anyone else. How did you find this guy? What did it? What caught your eye & fascinated you to learn more. AG, NG, London, Tom, Destiny, flf, Kacie (Kacie, you were here before me!!) Lane, m, NETB, Eastcoastfan, Sienna, Hopeful, Stubborn, BlueVelvet, Smiley, Meg, all of you's, how did you find this community? Did you google? Did you just stumble on it?

And why Jake and no other celeb? What was it about this guy that was different? The fun stuff. The old memories. The goofy stuff. Because there's alot I know that I still haven't heard about him or Austin.

Someone humor me today because I'm really curious. I'd love to hear that story of what started it for you.

  10. Happy Easter to everyone who celebrates it.

Great post as usual for the Out Spotlight. I really enjoy all of them.

The pictures Peabunny and Carina, who I had the honor of meeting last week are adorable.

I"m off to have brunch with friends, so I'll be back to address your posts PG. I wish I was heading to Sienna's for breakfast too, that sounds so good. Now I"m in the mood for grits and turkey sausage, neither of which are on on the menu of the places I'm going to this morning. I don't eat beef or pork, and for some darn reason it is hard to find chicken/turkey sausage in NY restaurants.

  11. i fell in love with Jake after BBM. i'd seen him in MM and TDAT, and i'm sure i thought he was cute, but he was too young - or seemed too young - to impress me. Jack Twist impressed me, and i finally realized there was a real guy behind JT, and thats' how i got interested in Jake. back in those days, his life was so fun and light and happy. he was always with guys, never a girl in sight, and it was so easy to believe what i wanted to believe anyway, that he was gay and cool with it (even tho he wasn't out) and just living his life. these last 2 years have been a major disappointment, but i'm not ready to give up on him yet. i think he's just going through a bad phase, putting his career interests ahead of everything else, which i could understand better if he was picking better movies to make. regardless, i'm in for the long haul; if he gets her pg or marries her, or even gives her a ring, i'll have to reevaluate, but for now, i'm willing to play along, as long as i can hang around here and bitch sometimes.

have a great day. i'm going back to bed to sleep off the breakfast and mimosas! hugs. s!

  12. You had me at cheese grits Sienna. Now I'm thinking ham biscuits with salty country ham and sweet tea.

I have a Jake fan since the beginning and I mean the beginning. October Sky. I still remember hearing Roger Ebert saying too keep you eyes on Jake Gyllenhaal.

And you could see the pure effortless talent in his performance. My family isn't into movies, well because we were never allow to go to the movies, but things have changed over time they watch more and more movies. But won't forget my step mom who I think has probably watch only 12 movies in her lifetime, saying to me you know, Nita(my step sister), brought this movie for us to watch called October Sky (I was already a fan by then) and it was just so good. It is one of Nita's favs being a math and science teacher. And in the crazy way the world works, she gave it to one of my step nephews when he was little, he starts Univ. of Florida next year in AeroSpace Aeronautics. The power of movies.

But then it was Ebert again, talking about Jake in Moonlight Mile and saying he gave an Oscar worthy performance. And it was, again amazing for someone so young. And I watched more, and then Good Girl, and Lovely & Amazaing. But what sealed the deal. Donnie Darko. And I know I am in the minority here but that is the fav performance for me. To do that barely in his twenties unbelievable. I still watch and still discover new things 8 years after it came out.

I read Annie's short story when it came out in The New Yorker and was totally moved. And when I heard it was being made into a movie back in 2004, I remember telling one of my old bosses (who's gay)they were going to make it. And we both weren't sure what was going to happen, were they really going to make it, could it match the story, or how it would be received.

Austin - well I had seen him in the countless time force to watch Holiday in the Sun with my nieces. Then seeing him with Jake in TDAT and saying, hey that guy looks familiar. Never would have guessed that I would see him sitting next to Jake and just knowing this was it, this was the real deal

But finding my way online? Ted's first BI about Toothy and I remember thinking why does this sound like Jake. (being the fan I was) then I started looking around nothing serious. But keeping up on what he was doing being the fan I am. And started looking for Toothy "marks" where ever they were online. Saw the pictures, of Jake and Austin, what struck me was the true genuineness this couple. It just stood out. There was no hiding what it was, it was evident.

I was really hooked now on both of them. And my interest in Austin has grown as I have seen him grow as an actor and his performances. And now as he shows more of himself in his writings and vlogs. And seeing how he could

Found the original WFT, lurked a for a bit, and then jumped in and started talking, met people became friends, exchanging emails, phone calls and hours online chatting, and ultimately meeting people in person. And you can see now were it has lead, here and OMG.

But it goes back to one little more one performance that has built and grown over time and has brought me exponential more than what that movie ticket cost for a movie called October Sky.

  13. i still haven't seen most of his movies. i loved The Good Girl. I thought he was awesome in that. i will keep an eye out for a copy of some of the other old ones.

  15. Is the District ready for gay marriage?

PS: I LOVE LOVE LOVE the bunnies. They are adorable. :)

Sienna, they know this and they use it to their advantage. Don't think only dogs can do soulful eyes- there's a bunny rabbit version too.

Someone humor me today because I'm really curious. I'd love to hear that story of what started it for you.

Ted's BIs. I've read Ted since the beginning and really wanted to know who Toothy was. Started Googling and of course, the rest is history.

  16. Happy Easter everyone and thanks again for an always interesting spotlight.

I read BBM the short story, then saw the movie and was blown away by Jake. Heath too, but more so Jake that first year or two. Heath crept up on me slowly. I watched all Jake's prior movies on DVD after that. But seeing him with Austin and the Toothy tale is what elevated Jake to a new level for me. I am a sucker for a love story, that's for sure. Especially a male/male one.

I'm with Prairie Girl. Lives change in an instant and I still expect Jake to come to his senses.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wow, interesting so far. Man, Special, you have been there from the very beginning. I absolutely love October Sky. And you know what? I remember when it came out, vaguely, because I remember my camping friend telling us how good it was & that we needed to see it. But it didn't appeal to me at the time because, well, you know me - romcom or nothing. And so it's taken forever for me to see it and I just love that movie. I think he was so excellent in that.

I've not seen Lovely & Amazing. I have not watched Proof - I've seen a couple of snippets of it and I've seen the very end, probably on cable or something. I think I've seen everything else except Rendition - and won't see that one because I've already heard & seen 250 times the clip of "Just tell me where he is!!!!" being screeched and well, you know.

Clarity, I was at my mom & dad's and I was like, Oh for gosh sakes, I knew I was going to forget someone - Clarityyyyyyy! If I'd've (triple contraction!!) had my laptop there, I would've gotten on right away & fixed that. But I can't hook up to anybody's Wi Fi there. They have too many loners & older people around and I know they don't have computers.

I am a sucker for a love story, that's for sure. Especially a male/male one.

    Oh yeah, m, me, too.

You know. Most girls I've ever talked to over the years, it's always been Mel Gibson, Brad Pitt, gosh, who else? Those 2 come immediately to mind. I never went for them. Not even Johnny Depp & he does it for alot of people. That Marc Blucas from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Vince Vaughn, from his younger days were favorites of mine. But never intrigued or stuck in my head like this one.

And it's not to forget what's currently going on, but it just struck me that like others around here, I wasn't around in the beginning so I was curious how some of you came to be here. And it's kind of fun to remember some of those earlier pictures just for a bit.

Like those pictures with those cops. Weren't those interesting. I never really did hear specifically what happened there. It certainly was interesting looking - didn't look like a casual convo to me.
And the HBO film set visit. I barely remember reading about that. I think Boo & Atticus were my main eyecatcher. That little Boo was the cutest thing.

Well, the Easter egg hunt was a success. We beat the rain and the kids were able to go hunt for the plastic eggs in the backyard. They just love opening those things and we all got to enjoy some Robin Egg malt balls ourselves. Have you ever tried the Peanut Butter malted balls? Man, those are excellent.

I'm going to go take a lil' snooze. I'm kind of sleepy. Thanks for sharing, guys. Maybe tonight some more will pop in here & share, too. I really enjoyed reading the stories.

  19. My story: I love Ang Lee's films and knew that BBM would be fantastic the moment I heard he would direct it. So I waited for a year for the film to come out in Finland and then managed to see it only months after it arrived. The film did not fail to meet my expectations. I didn't know anything about Jake at the time but his Jack Twist was such an effortless and engaging performance that it blew me away. So I hit the Internet and found the Toothy Tile BI's (through Defamer) around April 2006 and WFT soon after.

For me the clearest evidence that J&A are together has always been the photoshopped beach photos. There was no need to erase Jake so something was up and in the Lakers and bedhead pictures you can see what. My favourite movie of all times + possibly gay A-list actor in its leading role + hot and fascinating boyfriend - that's all I needed to be hooked for the long haul (actually any gay love story gets my attention but anyway, this was an especially intriguing one). And I loved the community that grew around WFT and has continued on OMG (without the extra drama on WFT that I wasn't too fond of).

After "finding" Jake I did remember really liking him in Good Girl. And I had to buy TDAT and watch the ending because I had never managed to see the whole film before. With the J&A subtext I now consider it a masterpiece.

  20. The first thing I saw Jake in was The Good Girl. I really liked the movie, but at the time I remember thinking he reminded me of Tobey, and that they just cast this guy because they couldn't get Tobey, lol. I then saw Lovely and Amazing, but have no memory of him in that. Next was a sneak preview of Proof, which I saw more than a year before it was released, and I hated the movie, thought he was miscast, and again didn't think too much of him.

NExt up was the director's cut of DD, it showed on the big screen in NYC for a week, and I was intrigued by the reviews, but missed seeing it and had to wait for the dvd, which I finally saw in the summer or fall of 2005, and loved it, but even then I didn't think too much about Jake, just the movie, although I really liked him in it.

Somehow I missed seeing any stories about BBM until shortly before it came out, and a good friend who had seen it at a press screen started talking about it. Oddly enough I showed DD to my movie group the same weekend BBM opened.

Then I saw BBM later that week, and oh boy. The minute he got out of that truck to apply for the job I was a goner. I fell hard and fast. That has never happened with me with an actor. I certainly had my share of teeny bopper crushes when I was a kid, but nothing like this. I kept going back to see the movie over and over, and couldn't wait to catch the ads on tv. Not long after seeing BBM I also caught TDAT on t.v.

I had never spent a lot of time on the internet before, but in early 2006, partly because it was slow at work, and partly because of Jake, I started surfing the internet, and started reading all the internet gossip sites. The first pictures of J&A I saw were the bed head pictures, on a sight I don't even think exists anymore, that made some reference to how cool would it be if Jake brought his boyfriend to the Oscars. Then I saw the TT blind items on Defamer, Lakers, found Jake Watch and through that found the original WFT probably not too long after it started up. I lurked for awhile before commenting though. And of course back then we got so many hot pictures of Jake that were floating around, like the ones from the photo shoot for Out.

LIke Sienata, I think it took Jake growing up to really notice him. When I first saw him in BBM one of the first things I thought to myself was wow, he's all grown up and sexy now. It was the same with Austin, only it took longer. Jake I think looked older for his age, at least since BBM, while Austin always looked more his age, and therefore was a little too cute, pretty and young for my tastes. I started seeing him in things because I was curious, but it was only around the time of JFC that I really fell for him.

The bearding however has just about killed most of what I used to feel about Jake. Somedays I have hope that things will change, or if a picture comes out that looks more like his old self I'll temporarily forget the past two years. But mostly I think that even if he came out tomorrow I'll never be able to feel the way I used to about him. Too much water under that bridge.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I hope everyone is enjoying Easter. I just got back from a really nice early Easter dinner with a friend. The weather here in the NE is about 30 degrees colder than Central Florida but it is a nice day.

First thing I have to do tomorrow morning is call the Doc. My wrists and both of my thumbs are still very painful from the fall in Florida. I still only have about 30 to 50 % use of my thumbs.

I never knew Jake in any of his early movies. The very film I saw him in was Jarhead. I thought he was great and Wow what a bod. Then he blew me away in BBM. Ennis Del Mar and Jake Twist will be names that will be remembered for many years to come.

My curiousity about Jakes sexuality came during the awards cermonies after BBM. Jakes exceptance speechs at the Baftas and the MTV awards sure made it seem like he was gay to me.
Then I found out about Toothy on Eonline and was drawn to WFT and then OMG.

Seems like two different persons over these few years. I am not sure who the real Jake is. Is he the post BBM Jake or is he the post Rendition Jake. The liked the post BBM Jake much better. He was a lot of fun and it seemed like he was enjoying life. Seeing J and A as a couple made me feel that two famous and very good looking men were about to come out in HW. At least that was what Ted made me think. I was flabergasted. Didnt happen though.

Feel kinda bad saying this but I have no interest in the new Jake. None. I have no intention of seing anymore of his movies. Guess I am not a real fan. Never have been a real starstruck kind of person. It was all about Jake being Toothy and Jake coming out. Now I just watch without expectations but do hope to some day find out that the old Jake was for real. Not holding my breath but it would be sweet have have him back.

Of course the relationships I have formed on WFT and OMG have been awesome. Wicked and the Mrs. are truly are among the best of friends. I love them both. I have liked everyone I have met since becoming a member of this little community and have some good memories to keep forever and I hope more to come.

It is fun going back and hearing how everyone got hooked liked me and how everyone has handled the changes during the last several years. Everyone has handled it differently but I suspect everyone still has a flicker of hope that what we dreamed will still come true:-)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Tom... first let me say, i'm sorry you're still having so much pain with your hands. i hope you can find some relief. my mom is having some major issues with her wrists. tendonitis is the diagnosis, but i'm not sure i believe it, and it's really a drain on her ability to do stuff.

now, on to jake. i really enjoyed reading your post about how you came to care about him. i didn't see jarhead till after bbm. i watched it and proof right afterwards, wanting to see more of him. altho he was gorgeous in both, neither movie did much for me, entertainmentwise.

i, too, was enchanted with his post BBM self. he did seem so happy and carefree, living his life the way he wanted to, doing his own thing and letting folks think what they wanted.

however, i'll say this in his defense, or maybe as a way of trying to understand him. other than BBM, he really has no other adult work that stands out. the movies we like showcase him as a teen/almost adult/very young man. so he's gone from BBM, where he was tops and won awards and got all this attention, to slowly but surely fizzling out, with nothing he does garnering any attention or excitement. i think he's trying desperately to change his luck by doing something drastic, and being seen as the love interest of one of the top paid actresses in HW, as well as being seen as Straight, is probably what he thinks will make folks take him more seriously. i wish being straight wasn't so closely linked to being successful in his career, but that appears to be the case. someone posted a list recently about actors suspected of being gay but closeted, and it was huge. even if half those guys were gay, that still is a lot of people living dual lives in order to have their career. i wish he had the kahonas to break out, but i can't really blame him for not.

but i'm with you... i'm gonna hang around here and hope! :)

  23. Jake fan since "Donnie Darko", Annie Proulx fan since forever. Combine the two, and Viola! An obsession was created. Joined DFC - then unjoined thanks to the bitch cabal over there - stared writing my Jack/Ennis based book - which is, after almost three years in the writing, just about finished - clam happy to be a member of the BBM fandom.

What drew me to Google Toothy Tile was a comment over on JJ. What? What's this? Read it and the intriguing started. More Googling, more Toothy, then WFT. There I read all the Blind Items, learned of the origins and finally introduced to Jaustin. No lurking for me, nope, jumped right in with posts and chat, loved heckling the trolls, celebrating each new pic, secure in the knowledge that Jake was with Austin, and both would soon live their truth.

When OMG premiered, I followed Special, more posting, more chat, lots more heckling, and even more celebrating.

    Then came Rome.

A step back to take stock, to examine the time spent, the energy expended. Still posted, still chatted, but the luster of their truth soon not so shiny anymore.

Then came Heath's death. And on the heels of that unimaginable tragedy, the Reeke park pics.

That was it. Time and energy changed to someone more worthwhile, someone not afraid, someone who loved the concept of personal integrity more than fortune and glory. (That someone is John Barrowman) No more would Jake, and Austin, receive my attention, for neither deserved it.*

Oh, I check back in here, obviously, and have posted, usually under another snarky name when a point needs to be made, but Jake as he is today no longer holds my respect, so therefore, unlike before, neither does he hold my rapt attention. That's been focused on more positive things, more life affirming pursuits, for it's too short to allow cowards to drag you down.

Now, they're a looksee, a side trip, an I've got a few minutes to kill. I'm more of a fan of Special's posts than the subject of them.

I have often wondered why, why did I get so wrapped up in Toothy? Why did it mean so bloody much to me that Jake and Austin were real and true? Others may ask themselves this same question, and it would be presumptious to answer for all, but mine points right back to "Brokeback Mountain." Jack and Ennis never had their happy ever after, could never look up at the sunshine as one, and I wanted with a soul hugging passion to give them that freedom, that chance. Toothy and Grey Goose represented the opportunity to see that desire fulfilled. Projection in its basic form. I needed a Jack/Ennis happy, so I wanted a Jake/Austin happy, too.

What's heartbreakingly sad, is it appears that the other BBM parallel - wife, kids, lies, waste - is how all this will end.

    * I know, I KNOW, my opinion and support, or the lack thereof, means less than a Lilliputian squating to either Jake or Austin. I'm arrogant, but even that goes beyond my vain borders.

  24. Hi PG!

How did I find this guy? I've told this story 600 times at least, but I always love to tell it. Never heard of him before except vaguely as Kiki's bf, and the trailer for Jarhead. But when I saw BBM - I was totally blown away, by his acting. I knew Heath would be great, and he was, but never having seen Jake in anything before, I was just so taken with his performance as Jack Twist, such a great character. Sure, he was beautiful in it, but that wasn't what got me - he was just so good in it. So then I started to follow this wonderful young actor, and caught up with some of his films - Moonlight Mile absolutely got me, part of the reason it was filmed in and around my hometown - which I visited today and had a lovely Easter dinner with family - but it was 43 degrees! The beaches and farms were gorgeous as always. I loved him in The Good Girl, and October Sky, and Jarhead, Zodiac and Rendition. I'm anxious to see what's next for him.

The bunnies are adorable, glad to hear you all had a great day too. Love this song. ;)

  26. I don't know why I became so taken with the TT story, I remember stumbling upon TT in connection with Jake, asking myself what the hey is that? Which led me to the first WFT - and Ted's first sweet BI. I thought it was so lovely, not salacious gossip, as Ted said, taking a break from salacious patrol to comment on something beautiful. I never read gossip, and TT made me stop and take a look. :)

  27. how did you find this community? Did you google? Did you just stumble on it?

Watched Judge John Deed UK series starring Martin Shaw -> discovered Martin Shaw's old UK series The Professionals -> discovered slash -> found out about Brokeback Mountain on the slash forum -> watched Brokeback Mountain -> posted on IHJ, DCF and Jake Watch -> found out about Toothy Tile saga, but wasn't interested -> Reeke tabloid crap commenced -> someone on Jake Watch mentioned WFT -> discovered WFT and OMG -> October 2007, Jake convinced me he's gay and bearding

  28. That's so sweet of you to remember me PG. I feel so close you now even though we have never met. Of course for me it was BBM. I have never seen a movie so brilliantly written and portrayed on the big screen. I just HAD to know who these 2 actors were. So I started googling and reading more about these 2 together and individually. I have to say I fell in love with both Heath and Jake the more I knew about them. They both seemed to embrace life and their career. I brought all their movies and visited all the sites devoted to them. First DC Forum and LJ, IHJ, Heath Heathens, then WDW, WFT, and finally OMG (Yeah - I was hooked - the fanfic didnt help matters either - lol). I didn't know too much about Austin other than TDAT so he came much later. I don't really follow Ted either so I was surprised there was a "history" of Jaustin. The thought of them being together as a couple was sweet so I was all for it (im a sucker for a love story too). I'm glad I found OMG though because I have had a chance to watch Austin in action over the years and I think he's a good actor as well. I think he has a bright future ahead.
You all know my feelings over the past 2 years since Rome but I come back faithfully because of you guys. We share our ups, downs, frustrations and hopes with each other. We discuss other things not related to J & A and Special makes sure we learn a thing or two along the way - win win all around : )

  29. This has been awesome, guys. I feel like we've opened a diary or journal and are taking a look back as well as a mournful & winsome look at today, don't you? It's so sad. There is this feeling of something so beautiful having been spoiled, an innocence lost that can never be claimed again. What is it about this guy?? It's kind of some nameless thing, almost.

And for me, Austin came way late. I had no idea who he was. And while he certainly caught my eye in those Laker & bedhead pics, I still really didn't know anything about him. And I didn't even watch John from Cincy because I didn't have HBO. But I am glad I did buy it and watched it because it was my first introduction into something he had done. I didn't even see TDAT until last year.

And look how far Austin has come now. That guy has really grown. He comes across as someone who has it all together.

me, your story was fascinating. And you have been writing a story?? Ack, you have me so curious!! Your story just tore at my heart. It was so eloquently spoken and was so frank. And I totally understand where you're coming from. It just makes me sad. Hey, that John Barrowman is a stud, isn't he? And your comparison to linking Jack & Ennis with no happy ending to J & A with a possible, alternatively happy one made me sigh with the way you phrased it. Looking up into the sun together. Wow.

And smiley, yours was quite quirky the way you happened here by way of slash. lol. That's cool. I remember the first story of that I happened to come across. I remember seeing that picture of Jack Twist standing on that small bridge in only his jeans, this total picture of angst & contemplation, have you seen that one? And there is nothing in the movie with that scene in it so I figured it was a deleted scene. And I knew there were always deleted scenes so I know I was googling about BBM deleted scenes and clicked on something about "missing motel scene or moment" or something like that. And somehow that's how I came upon my first piece of slash. Now I don't even know what story that was. And I don't remember how I found the rest, but did somehow. I had no idea such stuff existed. There's an entire other universe of various stories that people write. About everything under the sun, not just BBM.

And I know how you feel, Clarity, you know I have this personal tug of war going on inside me, too. It's a real struggle. I'm glad you still are here, tho, cause you're special to me, too. I really enjoyed getting in the ol' chat rooom with you that last time. We should meet sometime; we could have a great time chatting it up. It is so much fun to meet fellow OMG'ers.

  30. netb, I am with you & everyone else on how good Jake portrayed Jack T. Could anyone have played that role any better? Hard to imagine anyone else. And boy, am I glad that Mark Wahlberg didn't do it. With his lousy attitude, there's no way he could've done it the slightest bit of justice.
I'm glad to hear you had a really nice Easter dinner. It's cold here, too! It's only in the 40's and it's a wet 40's, too. That's even worse.
Luckily, it should be alot nicer when we get to meet in June. I can't wait!!! It's going to be so neat.Do you drink coffee, netb? Are you, Special & I going to have to close down another Starbucks? Remember that, Special? Last call!! lol And Special & I are yawning but we just kept talking. Didn't want to give it up.

Destiny, you are a little newer than I thought. You are so well spoken & I thought you were certainly this longtime, seasoned veteran. But you are still kind of new. That's interesting. The bedhead pictures. LOL! That's funny how we all call them that. Austin looks like a kid in those. Actually, they both look so young, don't they? And that owl shirt. What a crack up that is.

And poor Tom and your thumbs. Maybe you did fracture something in there. I hope you get into the doc tomorrow, get that checked out. I'm glad you have this week off, too. Sometimes we need vacations after our vacations, lol.
And of course you're going to have more memories. We 're going to meet, buddy! Somehow, someway. We will.

  33. Sorry I'm so wordy today, guys. But I really want to share this fascinating article on the front page of the KC Star today. It's about the impact of the internet on today's culture of young people. But there's parts about it that apply to those of us older ones as well. I'm going to re-print just parts of it. I had no idea about some of this stuff, like some of these YouTube vids.

excerpts from Kansas City Star, 4/12/09, by Eric Adler:

Every generation has its cultural touchstones--those shared media moments on radio or TV that help define individuals as part of an age: Franklin D Roosevelt and the "day that will live in infamy." The Beatles rocking "The Ed Sullivan Show." "The Brady Bunch." The last episode of "Seinfeld."
    Today...
    Fred Figglehorn.
Huh? What? You've never heard of Fred Figglehorn? How about Charlie the Unicorn? Or the Potter Puppet Pals?
The odds are good that your 10-year-old or teenager has heard of them. The reason you may not know them is that they're not on TV. They're Internet phenomena.
Media experts say that, for the first time, there exists a generation whose collective memories are being created as much by what they experience on their computers, particularly on the video-sharing site YouTube, as what they see on TV or hear on the radio.
They say that as the Internet becomes increasingly ubiquitous and portable, with easy accessibility on cell phones, the greater the influence of computer culture is likely to become.

"I think that 2 out of 3 of the kids in my grade know who Fred is," Phillip Woolley, 11, a 5th grader at St. Paul's Episcopal Day School in K.C., said of the antic character whose 35 short online videos rank as among the most watched on YouTube.
With titles such as "Fred Goes Swimming" or "Fred Goes Off His Meds," the episodes have been watched more than 250 million times.
"Everybody I know knows him," said 3rd grader Ruby Rios, 8.
For the uninitiated: "Fred" is a fictional hyperemotional and hyperarticulate 6-yr-old with an Alvin & the Chipmunks voice. He is played by the character's creator, Lucas Cruikshank, a 16 yr old high school student from Columbus, NE.
Cruikshank created the character in 2006, using his mother's video camera. He posted his videos on YouTube.
What makes Internet culture so powerful, experts say, is its "viral" nature--one person finds a Web site or YouTube video and passes it on to friends, who tell other friends ad infinitum.
The result is that Cruikshank now has an agent, a merchandizing deal for "Fred" T-shirts and the like.
As an Internet "star," Cruikshank now makes thousands of dollars each month, some estimate more than $100,000 a year, in advertising partnerships, a YouTube official confirmed.

    ReplyDelete
  34. ^^Oh my! I don't think I've ever seen that one before.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Story continued:

Just as TV moments eventually supplanted those created on the radio, so it is with the Internet, said David Bushman, the television curator at the Paley Center for Media in New York, formerly the Museum of Television & Radio. The center recently changed its namem in recognition of the Internet's growing cultural influence.
"These YouTube things that people are coming acorss and spreading virally are the equivalent of the 'Mickey Mouse Club' or 'Sesame Street' or 'The Rugrats' of a different generation," Bushman said. "That is what kids 10 years from now are going to be talking about."

And the story goes on at length about all of the really popular videos that kids are watching today. It also offers one explanation as to what makes the Internet different from something seen on TV.
Then this interesting bit towards the end.

Mary Madden, a senior specialist at Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, said that because the Internet is so interactive and interpersonal, its influence on defining shared cultural moments will only strengthen.
93% of young people ages 12 to 17 use the Internet daily, she said. It has "become central to the daily lives of teens."
More than just a place to read or watch content, the Internet is a means for personal connection, she said.
"This idea that you and I have that we communicate online through text or e-mail or instant messaging is completely different to kids. I may send you an e-mail that tells you I'm upset. A teenager may send a video that expresses how she feels, or post a song."
That personal relationship with the Internet will only make their connection to shared experiences stronger, Madden said.
Said Bushman, the Paley Center curator: "In terms of these mass shared experiences, who knows what's going to happen as people my age and older fade away. I have a 10 yr old daughter. She is on the computer a ton. If it was up to her, she would be on it even more."

I know this article is mainly focused on young people, but I think the main gist of it also applies to people like us. Friendships have been formed literally from the internet. There's no way I would've probably ever met some of you except for OMG on the internet. And when I told some people, including my always a little uneasy Mom, that I was going to be traveling to meet people I had met via the internet, you could just see it on some's faces or hear it in their voices, that little hesitation. That bit of worry because you know, everyone's heard of other meetings gone awry or whatever.
But I assured some that this was okay. It really was.

I thought this article was fascinating. I'm going to have to look at some of the videos they mentioned. I hate to be out of the loop, lol.

  36. Ooooh, smiley, I've not seen that one either. lol! Oh cripes, that's a good one, too.

No, in this one Jack is standing on that bridge and he's got one arm up, with that hand rubbing the back of his neck, head bent downward. He looks totally anguished. It is one heckuva picture. I've got it in My Pictures, but I don't think I can post it that way. I'd have to find it on the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Great, netb, you're a coffee drinker, too. I think we all need to do that.

Hey, yeah, and anyone else who wants to come meet up at some point. Believe me, it is a blast to just sit & talk in as easily a way as you can't quite like this on a blog. There are limitations here, reluctance to discuss some things for all to see or for PR to see. When you chat in person, it's alot more easy & fun to talk.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Special, thanks for another great out spotlight, always makes for good reading and consideration.

Now PG, you've opened the floodgates as it were and I'm more than happy to share my Jake timeline, experiences and observations.

Guess I've always been a bit of a closet case and at 50+ was envious of any younger guy who could truly be themselves or free enough to allow themselves to experience all that was their desire.

Back in late summer of 2005 I saw most of the movie "Highway" and Jake really caught my attention, so much so that I of course 'googled' him and discovered who this young guy was. I definateley got lots of pings from him on my own gaydar. One of the first images I saw of Jake was part of his then Wiki listing and a photo of a young Jake in a yellow shirt. Handsome and very engaging. A mention of a movie in production that had been filmed near Calgary, Alberta that he was in production really caught my attention because I had lived out west many years ago.

The lead up to BBM's premiere became my total obsession. From keeping track of the countdown on the Movie website, with it's snippets of soundtrack which did nothing but heighten my emotions and anticipation. I experienced an enormous buildup to my first viewing of the movie very early in 2006, viewed the movie in the theatres some 14 times. It's a wonder I didn't loose my job all those months as I was became totally obsessed with the movie and Jake in particular. Heath was a great second person of interest because of his great work in the movie but it was Jake that really did it for me. I'm an incurable romantic and Jack was a perfect storm of love, passion, angst, hopefulness, forgiveness, courage, and God only knows what other characteristics. I became a daily reader at IMDb on the BBM thread and was amazed at the quality of the discussion surrounding the movie and it's production. I fondly remember many of the threads started or contributed to by one Casey Cornelius and his very astute observations and discussion. In time I moved over to Bettermost for a less troll-infested discussion away from most of the hater's at IMDb. Bettermost was a wonderful experience as well, but I never did make the time to join in on that discussion.

In all of this I also became aware of the blogs and of course JakeWatch and WFT. Keeping tabs on Jake and Austin all the while going through my own personal voyage of discovery that began with Brokeback Mountain.

For me, the movie was a life altering event that many have discussed over the past three and half years. I'm so much more aware of my own life and accepting that I'm a gay man. What I saw in Jake gave me hope that things could me so much better for all of us if only we could be true to ourselves. Sadly, I'm not there myself yet.... I'm still a work in progress and choose to stay closeted. But I've found some happiness in watching Jake navigate these waters along with Austin. I'm convinced of the extra special nature of that relationship. In my heart I believe that it is all true and the past year or more has been dismal in some respects but I still cleave to my belief that there will soon come a time when all will be revealed.

I'm not one to comment daily and to discuss all of this back and forth as there are so many who can cover the topic so much better than I, so I'm content to participate in my own way, but mostly just living in hope that one day soon Jake will speak his true feelings and once again share what in the past appeared to be real, genuine and so very obvious to many of us.

Thanks for listening folks. Tom, I applaud your new found patience and somehow identify with you as I know there aren't too many of us around of more experienced years of the male persuasion.

Special, I so much appreciate your lead on this your blog and for allowing the discussion to flow and for us to chew things over and over again.

    My very best to all.

    Seaweed.

  40. Thanks NETB,

I had wanted to get into the movie roles that Jake has had only to say that my 2nd favourite is Bubble Boy. A strange choice to some but the directors commentary with Jake spoke to me so very strongly of the type of person I believe Jake to be. I just don't think you can fake that kind of discussion, I think he revealed a lot of himself in that track, discussing the movie's progress with Blair Hayes.

  41. That was an awesome post Seaweed. Thanks for your comments. One thing that has made me more patient is my own life has changed and I am out to many more people with more challenges to face. One by one. Although life is still very tough I am now proud of my sexuality and not as afraid to be who I am. Of course I am not facing the extreme pressures that Gay men must feel in HW and the enormous amt of money involved but I really thought Jake would be the first to fave up to them and still be a big star. I believe somewhere along he decided that was impossible. Sorry to say that I feel he choose money and fame over his pride. Unless we all got it wrong and the whole BBM sure looks and sounds like Jake is gay was a pure PR stunt and Ted is full of crap. Nah he is gay and ted knows some stuff he cant reveal. Like his sources of course. Still Your right Seaweed I am more patient and less angry. Feels good.

    Wanna get married Seaweed;-)

Oh, Seaweed, that was an incredibly written comment. I loved it. Hey, and it's okay. Heck, it's a really personal issue and when the time is right, it'll be right. You are loved, buddy. And you're for sure loved by this gal in the great state of KANSAS!
lol, boring as it is. But that's another story.

Seaweed, BBM was lifealtering for me, too, although in a different sense. It really, really was the final hit to the ignorant brick wall that was my way of thinking & belief. And I'm eternally grateful to it. I just love your blog name. It is so intriguing. Seaweed. Maybe you are a lover of the ocean or live near an ocean. Or maybe you like plantlife or spinach. You know, there's a character in that musical Hairspray who is called Seaweed. He's soooo goodlooking. I just saw Hairspray for the first time when it came out with John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer in it. I loved that movie.

Anyway, it's so wonderful for you to share this really intimate part about your life. I hope right along with you. I'm there. I'd love to meet you, too, Seaweed. If you're near the U.S. northeast, some of us are getting together the first weekend in June; keep it in mind, ok? Thanks so much for sharing. What we all shared today was awesome. And although right now it's not going the way we'd like, it's great to still hang in there together & keep in touch in this manner.

  44. Oops, couple of other things.

Seaweed, so there's a commentary on the dvd of Bubbleboy? You know, I've only watched that once. You have me intrigued now.

And you talked about the BBM soundtrack. Was that music not incredible or what? That original instrumental opening song was so pivotal; it is so identifying of that movie. It haunts me to this day.

joker, hi! We've not ever really talked before, but I've seen your name in the past and I kind of take it that you are a longtime commenter on OMG. I'd love to hear your story if you are ever so inclined. Cool - it's kind of another alumni day!

  46. Great post Seaweed. And I love Bubble Boy, Jake is great at comedy. And I know I'm in the minority, but Zodiac is neck to neck with DD for my favorite after BBM.

I've really enjoyed reading everyone else's posts too. A bittersweet walk down memory lane.

I've often thought, like Me, that the tragic ending of BBM was one of the things that also fueled my interest in J&A, and wanting to see a happy ending. As much as I hoped Jake would come out, deep down I realized the chances were low. However, I never saw the bearding coming, and it hit me like a truck. For me I also think BBM is why the bearding has been so hard too. The fact that someone who was in a movie like BBM, and who is part of a new generation, and so clearly in love, would turn around and become like his character is just gut-wrenching.

All those uninterested or unfamiliar with BBM slash, please excuse us for a moment.

Yes, PG, I've been writing a BBM story, with publishing the finished work as the ultimate goal. Perhaps you've heard of it, an obscure tome entitled "Tainted Evidence."

And to Seaweed - *applause!* You are wonderful.

  53. Heavens to mergatroid!!!! Oh My Dog!! me, that is you?

I cannot believe this. me, that's one of the very first stories I've ever read! Oh, I am beside myself.

Constable & Counselor! Sassy, sassy Jack! and Ennis with the best backview in a hearing courtroom! Oh me, you are a wit of wits.

I was just writing earlier this evening to someone in LJ'dom and it was someone I haven't talked to before. But I was talking to him about Disorderly Conduct and in that story, she does a couple shout-outs to a few stories, one of which is yours. When Jack & Ennis travel to Ennis' uncle & aunt's horsefarm, they come across a gentleman in an elevator, with a cast on his arm, and he's on the phone and he says goodnight, Constable, to the other party on the phone. And I thought that was so cool.

You are funny. three hours later, after a cutthroat Scrabble tournament, a bloody, yet victorious ME stumbles back to her laptop to find a question left unanswered

I have a friend who is so competitive, she takes all games seriously. She's a fiend at Scrabble, complete with the Scrabble dictionary or whatever that book is. She's he-- to play with, lol.

That is so awesome, me. I'm still just blown away by this. I love that story - it holds a special place with me because it was one of the first ones I ever read and the cleverness of it is just astounding. You are just a phenominally (sp?) talented writer.

Wow, what a fun, as Destiny said, and oh, so bittersweet day of discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Tainted Evidence! That's one of my all time favorite slash stories. I've read that one several times. Your writing style is unique. Very cool. Counselor and Constable, not to mention some truly hot sex. Thanks for writing that and I hope it gets published.

The commentary was great today. So interesting to hear everyone's story. I have carried my BBM ticket stub in my purse everyday since I saw the film, although today I decided to take it out and tossed into our safe. I still want the souvenir. Moving it had nothing to do with comments today, but is more so the result of Heath's death. I just need to move on from that and view it as a necessary step towards letting go.

The internet article was revealing. TV acted as my baby sitter throughout childhood. I devoted many hours to both TV and Movies, but now the internet rules my life. Not sure I could go 24hrs without it.

  55. Woke up early and I cant seem to get back to sleep. Reading todays comments were nice but also kind of sad. Everyone seems to be down and many without hope that Jake and or Austin will ever come out. It is tough. Who knows Austin is ptobably in LA and maybe in the next couple days we will get some new pics of the guys out together.

On my drive back from Florida I was very aware of how seasons change. In Florida summer is in full bloom but in the Northeast spring has just begun. Things change at the the drop of a hat. How would this feel? Jake and Austin at a Lakers playoff game. I wonder if the kiss cam man has heard the rumors:-)

    ReplyDelete
  56. The Good Girl was the first film
that made me aware of Jake. Then
I became aware of the TT and GG
articles by googling so I was a little late to the whole thing. For
myself, I think that Jake has really changed and not for the better. I have become quite a fan of Austin and I think that his career has really taken off. All I
can say is that Jake is going to live his own life! I will always
believe that he and Austin have been involved at some point but now
I am not so sure. That is just my
own personal opinion. I do not think that Ted would tell and make
up a complete lie, would you?
The bunnies are gorgeous!! There is really a lot of care for
them so a person should think carefully before getting one.
Everyone have a good week and I
hope everything goes good for you.
Jersey Tom, I hope that you will
get to see a doctor for your hands
and arms and that everything is
    okay.
The reason I came to OMG is
because everytime I went to WFT
to post they called me a troll so
I like this site because you can
express your own opinion and you
    learn some interesting things!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I am just afraid that one day Austin will get fed up with all this and leave! Any person can take
only so much! How sad if Jake's
love of his career makes him lose
one of the best things that ever
happened to him! I will always believe that there was something
between J&A and what a love that
    must be!!
Please do not get mad for me
saying this, but I am really getting to believe Jake and Reese
started out as friends and it turned into love! Things like that
    do happen.
What I am trying to say is that
sometimes between a career and love
you should choose what is in your
heart even it does not help you
in your career! I tend to dramatize
everything but true love only comes
around once in a lifetime. If you
lose it, you regret it for the rest
    of your lifetime!!
Now I will hush and I hope that
you have a wonderful week! I am sure it will be better that my week
    will be!!

  58. Hi PG, my story and timing are almost identical to hopeful's, but mine is set in London not Finland :)

The first film I saw Jake in was The Good Girl and it remains my second favourite Jake film. I am still a fan whatever transpires, and will see his upcoming movies, most likely with good friends made through the fandom.

And I have an extremely soft spot for Austin. :)

  60. Good morning! It's raining here - supposed to rain all day. sigh. Oh well, what can you do about it? Nothing.

Hey Kacie!! Great to see you, girl. Sounds like your painting project is moving right along. You are undertaking a pretty big project, sounds like, so those kinds of things take time. I hope it is taking off like you wanted.
I liked hearing your story, Kace. There's no need to apologize for what you think or feel. We're just talking here, that's all; it's mostly just us on a day like this one was and we're all family here, k? I always love your comments.

m, wasn't that cool? I'm still a little stunned. And that's a pretty big deal for tucking away your ticket for safekeeping and the reason why. Life is always evolving and when we can recognize how things are going for us individually, it's a huge admission and a big step towards whatever point we are at in our life or how we feel about something.

London, it's so wonderful to hear your story. Amazing how many people here love The Good Girl. I liked it until the end and well, I'm anal in my need for happy endings. Hope that wasn't a spoiler for anybody. Well, I suppose it did have a happy ending in an important way. Just not the one I wanted, lol.

This was really something. In a way, it was almost like Jake, this Was/Is Your Life! or sort of like a Tribute Honors show or something, looking at the past of some honoree at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Or maybe more like all of us were sitting around the dining room table after a big meal or in the living room (I get the La-Z-Boy!) lounging around late in the evening, reminiscing about a really special someone long gone now.

I know, Tom, it is kind of sad or bittersweet like Destiny said. I think it was really nice, though, to share. Not sure what we can draw from this. It can't be for naught. lol, is that the right form of not? Should it have been not? I think so. snicker!

What do we derive or conclude from all of this? We need to get something positive-not be saddened by it. That wasn't the intent at all. I think it was special just to share. We all learned about each other and maybe ourselves. And that's never, ever a bad thing. I really treasure everyone here and their willingness to open up about something that this blog is centered about and something that is obviously very dear to our hearts or was.

Everyone have a great Monday. I need to go brush the ol' teeth.

Hey, has anyone heard this goofy, crazy song, "Poker Face"?
    ma, ma, ma, maw....
lol, that thing cracks me up.

  61. Tom, please go to the doctor and get checked out. Your condition is starting to sound serious.
