Out Spotlight LXXXI

Today's Spotlight is Icelandic Prime minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir (Johanna Sigurdardottir)

Sigurdardottir was born in Reykjavík Iceland and studied at the Commercial College of Iceland, a vocational high school operated by the Chamber of Commerce. After graduating with her commercial diploma in 1960, she worked as a flight attendant and as an office worker. She was active in the trade union movement from early in her professional life, presiding over the Board of the Icelandic Cabin Crew Association in 1966 and 1969 and over the Board of Svölurnar, Association of Former Stewardesses in 1975. She was also a member of the Board of the Commercial Workers' Union from 1976 to 1983.

She became involved in politics in 1978, and served as Iceland's Minister of Social Affairs and Social Security from 1987–1994 and 2007–2009. She has been a member of the Althing (Iceland's parliament) for Reykjavík constituencies, and won re-election on eight successive times.

She became Acting Prime Minister on February 1, 2009, making her Iceland's first female Prime Minister. This happened after the Independent Party leadership was ousted in January amid increasingly violent public demonstrations that blamed the conservative party for Iceland's economic ruin. She also became the world's first openly gay head of government of the modern era.

In April's special election, voters overwhelming rejected the conservative Independent Party that has been in power for 18 years in favor of Siguroardottir's Social Democrats and their partners, the Left-Greens. Confirming her position as Prime Minister.

Free from familial political connections, she is seen as a trusted ally of the people, a fact born out in her whopping 73% approval rating, making her the most popular minister in the country.

Sigurdardottir is a social democrat and Iceland's longest-serving member of Parliament. In the 1990s, when she lost a bid to head the party, she lifted her fist and declared "My time will come!" - a phrase that became a popular Icelandic expression.

Sigurdardottir was married to Þorvaldur Steinar Jóhannesson in 1970 and the couple had two sons, now adults. After her divorce, she met Icelandic playwright and author Jónína Leósdóttir. They were married in 2002.

While the rest of the world looked on in awe as a lesbian prepared to take over the reins of a country, Icelanders appeared nonchalant. The fight for gay and lesbian equality in Iceland is all but won. The tiny country (pop. 32,000) established civil unions, which include provisions for adoption, for gay and lesbian couples in 1996.

“Being gay is not an issue in Iceland,” Frosti Jónsson, chairman of Iceland's gay and lesbian association, told Time magazine. “There are so many openly gay prominent figures in the public and private sector here that it doesn't affect who we select for our highest offices. Our minds are focused on what counts, which is the current situation in the country.”

  1. Two completely things unrelated to each other I ran across while looking for someone to profile for today's Out Spotlight.

Hillary Clinton to give equal benefits to gay US diplomats

    and for Adam Lambert fans

  3. I read about the election in Iceland a few weeks ago and when I found out that the Prime Minister was the first openly gay leader of a country ever elected I was thrilled. Such a small country such a huge event.

Congrats Prime Minister Siguroardottir and to the 32,000 citizens if Iceland.

  5. Hilary Clinton is the best. I proudly voted for her in the NJ primary but of course voted for President Obama in the general election. Let's hope the President begins to follow her lead and begins making similiar decisions. I def think Obama had to address more pressing issues his his frist 100 days but the time has come.

  6. Taking a look at JG Francis blog I am pretty impressed. This guy gives his name and names some relatives. He also has a my space. He certainly doesnt seem to have any other type interest that would make it seem like he be intered in Jake or a fan. Interesting I wish he say more.

  7. Any pictures of JG Francis?

  8. ***Not to get personal, lol, but what about you Wicked, would you hook up/have sex with Jake (your longterm relationship notwithstanding) if he propositioned you?***

Even if I were single, I would not have sex with any man at any time. And Jake would be way down on the list of men that I would even think about doing it with.

Interesting blog mention. The blogger does not seem to have an agenda. I have to wonder why the blogger was staring back so intensely at Jake if he's supposed to be straight, though.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The only thing Wicked is that he says they have a mutual friend and somewhere along the line he must have at least gotten a number he could reach Jake.

I hope no one is offended but I asked JG to visit us.

  10. His agenda seems to be plain old vanity. It's a petty musing about the "irony" of it all: how he just had to turn down a hot male celeb because he is so tragically straight.

  12. Good Sunday everyone!

I had no idea about the icelandic prime minister! It's just wonderful and full of hope for the future.
It seems (but maybe I am wrong), that some scandinavian countries are ahead compared to others concerning gay rights. For instance adoption is allowed in Denemark.
Little by little things change,I am optimistic.

Well anyways great rise for Miss Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir ( what name!)

I see you often talk about Adam Lambert, he is the futur winner of American idol right? Funny because I am seeing the same show here but the frenchy version called "the new star" lol. For the first time we have an openly gay , really cute and kind and good singer. He doesn't hide himself but shows as he is and don't care of prejudices. People love him.

Oh Wicked to answer you , yes I follow all the skating figure events!!! But I am a nostalgic of the old glorious years I think lol When there were athletes like Alexei Yagudin or Elvis stoiko, michelle kwan... ( sorry for wrong spelling )
They were so accomplished technically and artisticely and above all put soul in their performances.
( Us poor frenchy we aren't so brillant in that domain and many others too LOL, except our old dancer couple Pezerat and Anissina!!!)

Now of course we see great skaters but I feel something is lacking. They don't shine like before. Or maybe I am the one who have a problem lol.

  15. No way of knowing if this is true, but the blog looks legit. And working in tje arts, he probably knows lots of gay men and may be curious and/or appreciates beauty in men as well as women.

I do think Jake would be dumb enough to do something like thjis, probably gets the guy all hot and bothered and then whips aout the contract before he whips out the little tooth.

Yeah Cannes is over and it's Mickael Hannecke who received the palm! and yet most of critics said his movie is soooo boring lol. My poor Pedro, again left with nothing!!!!

  29. Church of Scotland endorses gay minister's appointment.

(CNN) -- A gay minister at the center of a row about his appointment to a church in a Scottish city said he was "humbled" after the Church of Scotland upheld his appointment.
Scott Rennie rehearses a sermon at Brechin Cathedral in northeast Scotland.

In a ground-breaking move, the church's ruling body voted by 326 to 267 in support of the Rev. Scott Rennie, the church said in a news release Sunday.

The 37-year-old's appointment at Queen's Cross Church in Aberdeen, on Scotland's northeast coast, provoked opposition from traditionalist members of the church and has led to fears it could cause a damaging split.

More than 400 Church or "Kirk" ministers and almost 5,000 Church of Scotland members are said to have signed an online petition, organized by the Fellowship of Confessing Churches, against the appointment, the BBC reported.

Papers lodged with the Church of Scotland's General Assembly in Edinburgh claimed scriptures in the Old and New Testament describe same-sex activity as a "wrong choice," the British Press Association said.

However, Rennie's supporters argued that the Bible does not directly address homosexual relationships, which are now "essentially a feature of modern society."

In a statement released after Saturday night's vote in the Scottish capital, Rennie said: "I am humbled that the General Assembly has recognized God's call upon my life."

Ewen Gilchrist, interim moderator at Queen's Cross Church, was quoted by PA as saying: "It's a good decision for the General Assembly to have made because it sends out a message that we desire to be welcoming, accepting and inclusive.

"The issue of sexual orientation and Scriptural authority is something that has to be wrestled with and cannot be hidden away.
    "

Hi guys. Well, Puddy & Nikki's dad has a very, very miniscule selection of unsecured WiFi sites from which to try & piggyback on. Thus, moi is without internet this weekend.
    :(

I am on here because I'm at home. I finally had a good opportunity to come use my own washer & dryer to wash his shower curtain. I don't think he has one. Anyway, for the past couple of years, as I was telling the girls on Friday, the shower curtain has driven me nuts. It's navy and so splattered with hard water and/or talcum powder stains, that it kind of drives me crazy. So I am seizing this chance to kill 2 birds with one stone. Do I a) spend 4 bucks @ Panera and gulp down 350 calories of caffeine or 2) spend 4 bucks of gas and seize internet time plus maybe get this shower curtain to shine again???

    Ah, it's a no brainer.

  35. LOLLL, no, it's not that, Monica & Linda!! snicker. The positioning of the curtain in relative proximity to the toilet, and with the angle of the ....no, no, no, no!!! lol!

Anyway, just took it out and it's beautiful!!! It looks like new! And it smells good. Man, I should've brought those sheets & bedspread over here, too, while I was at it.

Anyway, always interesting. I could really tell a tale with the microwave. I'll condense it down. 1 1/2-2 yrs ago when I first started watching Nikki (with Jake, the other black lab, but who is now deceased), I had a terror attack upon trying to use his microwave. It had calcified food stalactites & stalagmites all over the inside. So I had to arm myself with one of those Mr. Clean sponges and heavy duty cleaner. Then I took to task and voila!! It was a miracle! When he emailed me later, he gave a thank you for cleaning his microwave. lol.
I even took a few pictures "Before" to show the girls at work because I think they thought I was exxagerating. Unfortunately, now, though, it appears it might be taking a boomerang turn back to what it used to be. Haven't had to use it yet, but a couple weeks ago, it was looking that way again. Oh well.

  36. Ah, such are the stories of an American Dogsitter. lol.

Well, I need to get going, get back to weekend homebase. Not too much going on with the guys, is there?

I just kind of find it interesting that we've had 3 obscure blogsite mentions of the guys in the past couple of weeks. We had the Austin poem, the London jogging/journalist encounter, and now this latest one.
Everyone here is real good at thinking these things through, though, so I don't think there's any need to go on about it at length. I think it's a given that anyone who regularly lurks or checks out OMG or WFT2 can tell that some people have Google Alerts set up. So anyone would know that all they have to do is spittle out a snippet with a few select names in it and it's going to be seen by the Google Alert holders. And then it will be posted here for all to see. I am eternally grateful to those with these Alerts, though. I can never get over how fast we find out stuff here. But, the only bad side of that is that just like anything else, someone can use that knowledge for an ulterior reason.

I just find the title of that post pretty "interesting". And the first thing that strikes me after reading it in its entirety is I'm trying to imagine any former bf or straight male friend or co worker hooking up eyes with another guy, even a great looking guy, over an entire drink. If he hooked up eyes with Jake for that long a time, then I'm sorry, but I doubt he would've turned down a later opportunity to hook up. Wouldn't you think?? And not only that, but he would've probably done it before and said something about his foreheadslapping conclusion that he had some sexuality issues he needed to come to grips with and face up to. He wouldn't conclude that "Well, no, I'm straight, I'm into boobs so therefore I was only staring at you because, what? I was imagining you with boobs and so therefore, I was considering it?"

I don't know. Something just isn't right. The other thing that doesn't seem right is like Special said. I would think that having lurked here long enough, PR knows too that Google Alert is going to disclose any possible encounter like this. And they've told Jake he needs to watch it. So, if he does have any hook ups, it's going to be someone who's been screened or checked out just a bit more or something. Wouldn't you think?? There's too much $$$ riding on Reeke now and with PoP still looming for him to mess it up now with a lapse in judgement over a casual hook up.

Just a couple of thoughts on it. Not anything concrete, just opinion. Anyway, I better get going.

On my way here, I passed a little girl who was having a lemonade stand. When I went back to get the shower curtain, which I had forgotten, I stopped by & bought a cup of lemonade. Boy, when's the last time you saw one of those?? She was waving her arms, trying to flag people down.

Hey, it was darn good lemonade, too. I asked her if it was Crystal Lite but she didn't think so. And not Kool Aid's either. Wylers?
Maybe, she thought. Whichever, it was mighty tasty. I hope she does a good business, anyway.

Hope everyone's holiday weekend continues to go well. I'm off and quite excited now about putting up the shower curtain.

Thanks Special, I think this would be a perfect match, especially since Freddie is apparently a hero of Adam's.

On a related note, Perez is now labelling Adam as an "in the closet homosexual" because he hasn't said those three magic words. However, neither has he denied it. He pretty much confirmed it anyway when he reacted to the leaked pics by saying "I am who I am and have nothing to hide". My sense is he's trying to be low key about it mainly because its become such a focus.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah, why is it when someone, an anon blogger, says Jake came onto him, people here don't believe it? Sure, its okay to have critical thinking and not fall for everything you hear or read, but (A)WFT's (and OMGodot) premise is built on Jake is bi/gay, (B)Jake doing bearding is common knowledge around here, (C)Personal accounts like the blogger's are few and far between and extremely rare that it would be publicized.

I for one believe the blogger. Some things to remember: If he was gay chances are good he would have gone for being with Jake but then he would have to sign a confidentiality agreement, and not be able to spill the beans. However if was gay but didn't go for it (because he's in a monogamous relationship), most likely he would have felt obligated to keep the story quiet amongst his gay circle of friends, especially in LA where its a small world, and probably for the biggest reason, to leave that hookup-with-a-gorgeous-actor door of opportunity open. To spill what he spilled on the web is cutting off any future potential, it's pretty much a permanently closed case. The guy was nice and he laid out the rules: he's straight and not interested, and he has nothing invested and he has nothing to lose by telling what happened. (Btw Jake was lucky the blogger wasn't an angry or spiteful straight guy, it could have been a close call, in PR repair or a costly $$$ payout)

We should be celebrating that the blogger JG Francis had the balls to write about it. How often does that happen? I mean come on, Jake gay/bi, bearding, living in LA where half of who he knows is gay, confidentiality agreements at the ready..you KNOW stuff is going on, it's just that no one is saying. Truth is, it's all been a matter of time before the odds were up. And finally someone had the balls to say that yes, Jake is a participating player in the game.

  43. I think Jake Gyllenhaal is a manipulator par exellence. Anything I see or hear about him is taken with a huge grain of salt.

I think it's all done to keep the few fans he has interested. The public at large I don't think really cares.

It's also rather pathetic how his PR, Mom, or whoever is running the show seems to take feedback from OMG. Haven't they heard that after the fact doesn't count??

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think it might be cool if Adam worked with Brian May, but not as Queen and doing Queen songs, at this point he needs to do his own thing, not fill in as a singer.

I loathe Perez. He only goes after people he perceives as lower down on the food chain, and why is it that he only seems to target men who are just quietly going about their lives: Wentworth, NPH, Quinto, and Lambert. He never ever goes after the ones who are bearding like Jake, Hugh, etc. That is seriously fucked up, it should be just the opposite--go after the ones who are lying and engaging in homophobic behavior.

Speaking of which, I found the comments on a post on Jezebel about Quinto really enlightening, with one or two exceptions, most posters seem to think he is gay and are not only okay with it, but still find him hot.

    Jezebel post on Quinto

    ReplyDelete
  45. It is really awful how perez just picks on some people, especially as those people are being a lot more brave than the ones that beard, imo.

That's great about Quinto's fans being positive about his sexuality and not letting that get in the way of their admiration - kinda breaks the concept that a gay man can't be a star and/or object of women's desire. You can see the same thing with most of Lambert's fans too. I think there's a shift happening that's going to really help open the doors for more out stars.

  47. Sorry to go O/T again but I read a couple interesting things today about the way a couple of the other AI contestants are treating Adam, good and bad.

Good - a report from a local about Adam and Kris Allen:

Adam approached Kris' dad and complimented him on "how he raised him" saying: "He's the only Christian I've met that hasn't judged me." and that he "genuinely loves and accepts me for who I am."The bad: Adam's brother Neil posted on his blog that another contestant, Michael Sarver said to Adam that:

"Where I'm from, you're either in the closet or you're dead".

    Nice hey.

Anyway to leave things on a positive note here's a cute Kris/Adam surprise hug.

    link

    ReplyDelete
  48. Sigh, that is so disturbing Orchid.

But for every jerk there is someone like Kris. Thanks for the clip of him with Adam, a real "awwwww" moment. They genuinely look like good friends, and nice to see that they can be so affectionate with each other.

I can't tell you how much hope Adam and Zach give me, I hope I'm not going to be let down the way I was with Jake, but I have a feeling that won't happen.

And lets hope that the blogger story about Jake is a sign that somewhere inside the old Jake still lurks--and not just a Larry Craig or George Michael.

I don't know destiny, was what Sarver said an ultimatum/threat meaning he agreed with the dead/closet choice, or was his remark a sympathetic reality observation that things need to change? It depends on the context, whether he's a jerk or not.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Destiny, it is definitely disturbing. Even more so because I it sounds like the the way it was said was pretty hateful too given that Adam was apparently quite upset about it.

On the other hand, the Kris/Adam friendship is really nice and its great to see a friendship between a straight gay and a gay guy that is so warm.

Hearing your thoughts on Zach Quinto makes me really want to see Star Trek. Picks of him as Spock look amazing, and knowing he's one of the family just puts the icing on the cake :)

I am feeling pretty hopeful too. I think things are a changing. And maybe, just maybe, seeing more people being open will help Jake too.

  51. Interesting development, the blogger story. When stuff like that happens, I just file it away in my memory bank. Sooner or later, more details surface that can be used to draw a conclusion. A judgement about its validity does not always have to be made immediately. What always surprises me is how quickly PR or Jake is straight defenders show up. They must monitor wft2 and omg 24/7. I do recall though that Ted has said that Toothy will be Toothy. You can hide your sexuality, but you can't deny your true nature. It has to come out somewhere.

Since when is "hanging out" a euphemistic phrase for "screwing around?" Maybe Jake really did want to hang out and become friends with this Francis person?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hi Lane, I seem to have kind of answered your questions ahead of time in my above post. Here's what Adam's brother wrote about it:

With Sarver, well.... Mom and Dad always taught us that it isn't what you say but how you say it. That's how I got so sardonic. So if what he said offended Adam, it probably had some teeth to it. Do I think he hates gays? No. Do I think he's an ignorant shithead with no concept of diversity and how to interact with people that don't match the narrow archetype of everyone you grew up with? Yes.I get the impression there is some definite conflicts going on behind the scenes.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ok orchid, I see now. I was just taking the one sentence and how it could be meant 2 different ways. But with the rest of it, the comment you posted from Adam's brother, it's more clear. Thanks for that. Do you usually answer a question before you see it, lol, that's pretty good timing. I didn't watch Idol, I don't know anything about Sarver and I only heard the Kris name for the first time after he was in the news as the winner (where the hell did he come from lol) because all I heard/read about was Adam. Congrats to the Kris guy, but I think he'll be a footnote. Adam Lambert is Charisma with a voice and he has a face that has SEX written all over it. Even my 85 yr old grandmother who doesn't watch watch Idol knows who Adam is, I went over to her house last week and she had a stack of pictures of him cut out from newspapers and magazines because she loves the way he dresses and his jewelery and she thinks he's the cutest thing (and yes she knows he's gay but she doesn't care). In my mind her crush is in a grandmotherly way, like she wants to bake him cookies, anything other than that I don't want to know about!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Lane, I think I must be telepathic, lol. it was grea that Adam's brother explained that too becuase it can be hard to read context in text comments. I agree about Adam being incredibly sexy. I think he's go far. The time has come for a gay star to represent. Very cute story about your grandma, clearly a woman with impeccable taste ;)

    Dear Ted:
This Ted-head was wondering, if closeted actors have dalliances, aren't they afraid someone will blab to the press? Please, who is Toothy Tile? He is the only one I care about. I think it is Zach Braff.
    Judi

    Dear Dirt Devil:
Horny men do stupidola things. Explains a lot. Regarding Zach, no, honey. Toothy's actually hot, see.

    Awwww!

  59. Since when is "hanging out" a euphemistic phrase for "screwing around?" /

Since this Francis person said so: Coming full circle - he contacted my friend afterward and indirectly asked if I wanted to "hang out?" The quotation marks change those words into "would I like to touch his penis?"

  60. I am sorry that I have not posted
for awhile but at times I do get
sort of disgusted at the Jake/Reese
show. Is the photos of Austin on
the bicycle Saturday from the movie
Six Feet Under?f Is that the name
of it? Also, I am going to try my
best to join you all for JFC. Do
any of you have any idea yet as to
when The Informers comes out on DVD? Keep me posted!! Our work is
getting sort of slow again so that
is life. I hope all of you are doing okay. I was off today for the
Holiday and thought that I would
post. Iam glad to hear that Austin
will be on OTH next year!

  61. Dear Ted:
In the past three weeks that I've been reading A.T., I've become a Blind Vice-aholic, so I must know: does Toothy's beard know that's all she is? Or does she think it's the real deal?
    —Kate

    Dear Vice Addict:
Like many women who operate so intimately in the worlds of gay men, she thinks somehow Toothy's feelings for her are different.

    Awful Truth

  62. The bad: Adam's brother Neil posted on his blog that another contestant, Michael Sarver said to Adam that:

"Where I'm from, you're either in the closet or you're dead".
    *

    Where is Sarver from, btw?

Lane, that is adorable about your grandmother.

Hey, Kacie! Always great to see you!

I thought Reese was smarter than this.

  64. Hi Wicked, Sarver is from Jasper, TX. This is the same place where a black man, James Byrd, was tied to the back of a pickup truck and dragged for miles to his death because he was black.

  65. Dear Ted:
I don't get it. One minute it seems like you're fed up with Toothy or Judas' behavior and then the next minute you seem to be sympathizing with them to the point of excusing their behavior. And why exactly are you so easy on Dash, when he's playing the game just like Judas? If Dash and Judas are so on-again, off-again, why do they still live together?

    Dear It Ain't So Simple:
Try growing up gay in Texas and you'll know what it's like to want things majorly changed, yet, at the same time, you still have sympathy for those who aren't changing as fast as you'd like. It's really that simple
    .

"I thought Reese was smarter than this."

Smarts have nothing to do with laziness. It's easy for a woman to love a gay man: all the fabulousness and none of the straight-man mindset. Who else but a gay like Jake to follow Reese around on a leash and not mind that its all about her?

  67. Has Jake ever come right out and said that he is dating Reese? I am
just curious is all! Is it possible
that one Friday or Saturday in the
next couple of months we could
review The Day After Tomorrow? It
has been years since I have seen it.I personally think that Jake is
    bisexual but that is JMO.
