Missed it by that much

"The Italians in the 60's were badass. I've always wanted to live in Italy and walk around the plaza wearing a tie and strange glasses, never caught without a glass of wine or some sort of cocktail"
Men's Health August 2007

Land in Rome Trevi Fountain

Buy a bottle of Chianti and head straight to the Piazza.
Meet two girls from Valencia, Venezuela, one from South Carolina, a guy from
Bulgaria, a guy from Spain, and a Texan.

Get drunk.

Get propositioned by a prostitute.

Run away.

Oh the reality. A bottle of Chianti, a polo shirt, and prostitute. (Gotta give him the glasses. He's got those. )

Love how he got out of that one. Run away.
But was that sound clapping coconuts or something else smacking together as he ran.
(Run away, Run away) : )

Austin Powers? Or Maxwell Smart? Does he have the mojo that makes him true International Man of Mystery and ladies man? Or is he just laying it on thick?

Helping schools go green... hmmmm who else has been working on that too? : )

  2. Interesting that he is suddenly involved in schools and green projects, just like someone else we know.

The only thing that concerned me about Austin's post is that he is riding his scooter all over LA. Cute image yes, but not all that safe. Take care Austin.

Great music today. Have to run. We have a new CEO, coming to visit our office today. Everyone is on pins and needles - regime changes are always tricky.

  3. I think Austin has a lot of work to do before he will be a convincing International Man of Mystery.

    Eyes on Task*

Hey PG, in mental health speak we call that attend to task. :)

  4. Attend to task! Hmm, yeah, I can see that, too.

Have another repercussion from my carelessness. Now I have a bloodstain on my sock where my bandaid is on my ankle!! When will it ever end, I ask???!!!

Boy, is it hot here! Phew. I think it's in the 80s, but it feels hotter than that. I'm wimping out fast.

Well, had to run out and take a loan to go fill up the car. Bought some Corn Nuts at the BP station to go along with my fill up. Love the Corn Nuts!

Hey, thanks for the picture today, Special. I haven't gotten to get on So. Gothic yet so it's like a Sneak Preview for me.

    Hope everyone is having-
OHHHH - guess what, I almost forgot. Something terrible happened this past Sat. at my park.

A deceased male person was found on the west side of the park on the trail around 7 am. Just think - I almost went to walk there Sat morning and I would've been out there prior to that. But they do not suspect foul play. A jogger was hit and run last year and seriously hurt. Now, someone has died there. And it's such a quiet, safe park. I have to find out more details - I hope it's not anyone I've seen in the past. There's never hardly anyone out there on Sat & Sun early mornings whenever I go.

Okay, well, I'll try and have some much better news later today. Seems all I have is bad.

  5. Dear Austin:

    So what happened?

Obviously you've been paying attention to your critics and couldn't just leave it alone with your tale about falling in love with Clarise because that could be interpreted as love in that platonic, gay man sort of way. No, you had to make sure we knew you didn't mean that by telling us you'd slipped some stewardess a note (how retro, guess Jake and Reese are not the only ones looking back to the early 60s for inspiration) only to be rejected because she already had a boyfriend.

Well, let me be the first to congratulate you for selling a piece of your soul for what, a soap opera?

Do you feel like a real artist now that you're inching your way along the road to being like every other closeted actor in HW? Does it make you feel like a real man to lie instead of keeping it ambiguous and letting people think whatever they want to think? Can we expect even bigger steps in the future, and more acts of such "courage"?

Adam Lambert just doesn't get it, does he. This is America, and being number 2 is just good not enough in this country, even if it lands you on the cover of Rolling Stone and wins you the fans that will stick with you through thick and thin.

    Who cares about tomorrow, right?

This isn't Gossip Girls or American Idol we're talking about, none of that edgy "shit" for OTH. Or is it "families means only straight families" Disney?

And what about Hillarie? Does this mean Sago no longer thinks they can sell their project on the strength of their product, creativity, hard work and just selling yourself honestly? She must be so proud that you're going to bring in and/or keep a few homophobic fan girls that might be scared off.

Shhhhh, I'll let you in on a secret if you don't tell anyone. Homophobic fan girls are a dying breed. Ask Adam and Zach. Look at the ONTD post of you riding with your "friend" Jake. But again, people just don't understand, integrity means nothing, damn it. You've got to keep every single straight fan. And gay fans, they'll l keep quiet and continue to support you, right? Just ignore all those angry activists marching in the streets and demanding Obama keep his promises.

Besides, Sophia is out there working for gay rights, that'll balance out your pretending to be straight, right?

And so what if you buy into the dominant culture and don't do anything to change things. So what if people can point their fingers at HW, professional sports and other things that dominate our culture and say, look, being gay is clearly a bad thing or people wouldn't pretend to be straight, right? Privileged men like you have every right in the world to be hypocrites, don't they? Bobby Griffith and Larry King just didn't get it, did they? So what if every day there is a teenager who kills himself, gets tossed out on the streets or gets bashed for being gay.

They brought it on themselves by daring to be out, rather than pretending to be straight like you, didn't they?

I get it, I really do, I know it is impossible to be out and be in a show like OTH. But what's wrong with being another Wentworth Miller, Keanu Reeves or Zachary Quinto? I know, I know, that's not the way you Texans do it.

Your role model is George W. Bush, right?

You must be so proud of yourself.

    Really

  6. Wow guys, really think you might want to call off the lynch mob on poor Austin. The poor guy makes a fairly innocent entry on a blog he writes for and suddenly all hell breaks loose.

So he rather over does the 'falling in love' with a beavy of beauties, it all reads rather tongue in cheek to me, note, he doesn't imply anything other than innocent admiration anyone. Certainly there would appear to be no romantic involvement implied.

Also, not sure who said this, but there seems to be some sort of 'someone must have paid for this holiday' chat, as if Austin's taking hush money from the evil Disney corp. I'm pretty sure that Austin is perfectly capable of funding a few weeks in Italy by himself. Let's be honest, you could hardly describe him as a 'starving in the garret' type of actor. Wealthy background, and for a jobbing actor a fairly successful year, plus guaranteed earnings next year. Mid range hotels, train travel (cheap as chips in Italy) and a few pizzas are hardly going to break the bank.

Cut the guy some slack will you. He went on a private holiday, let people have the opportunity of reading about his experiences, and he gets hell for it. Remeber he didn't parade around with a beard on his arm, didn't imply he did anything but charmingly flirt with some girls (probabaly some boys as well) and posted a picture showing the now infamous neck chains.

These things do not constitute the crime of the century (in my book at least). Leave the guy alone will you.

  7. Sorry, be more of a rant.

Destiny, i don't want to argue with you, and yes it would be great to see Austin join "Wentworth Miller, Keanu Reeves or Zachary Quinto" but maybe the very successful "Wentworth Miller, Keanu Reeves or Zachary Quinto" and let's be honest Jake, might just want to lead the way, so not such successful actors like Austin can be open about who they are.

Of course someone needs to take the first step, hopefully it will be Zachary Quinto, but to castigate someone who's just beginning to get some mainstream recognition (after many years of trying) is more than harsh.

And, of course Sophia Bush can demostrate as much as she bloody well wants to, no-ones going to pull the plug on her career are they, she just get's the kudos (I'm not slighting Sophia B here, I think she's great, and super fit by the way).

I just don't think you should expect so much of two (Jake & Austin) young(ish) men. Can't blame either of them for not wanting to be martyrs / heroes, not many people would really.

    Okay, rant over.

  8. M - the point of my post was to point out the over the top of it all and I do think he laid it on thick about all the ladies. Still picturing him in Italy swigging a bottle of Chianti and running into a hooker. I laugh at the imagine him running away. (his own word for it)

Austin is no kept man. He has done well for himself. The deal he had with HBO was very rare, and wasn't a rinky dink kind of a deal. And if he got even just scale for guest spots on OTH, that is over 5 grand an hour of work. So it wasn't peanuts. You know when they extended the contract he was too smart not to take advantage and renegotiate for more money. And I bet he was very astute in the contract negotiations for Season 7 and possible Season 8. Not surprised if they didn't give him a little signing bonus either.

He has played the jack the lad before and the talented storyteller he, is loves to embellish to make the story even better. And sometimes in his storytelling he says more than what the story is telling.

Who ever he went with, and whenever he went he had a good time in Italy. I think he has a good time wherever he goes.

One thing to remember, alot of those prostitutes in central Rome aren't women!

And it does sound like Austin had a great time in Italy, a much more enjoyble experience than Jake would have had on the 'love tour'.

And altough I apologise for my rant earlier, I would like to say that it takes an exceptional person to be a Rosa Parks. Maybe Jake and Austin, however endearing and adorable we find / have found them, just aren't that exceptional. I know I wouldn't be.

  12. Good afternoon,

Hope you are all fine. Here the weather is marvellous and I pray for it to last as long as possible!

I am glad to read Austin spent a wonderful time in Italy, he is so lucky ,I envy him!!! lol
I guess soon he will be back on OTH set to shout the next season, that feel good to take holidays before going back to work.

He is quite elegant in his outfit on the green award pics. he is shining. (like always)

I read with attention all the comments about his personal report. Like Meg I don't believe one second Austin need to be payed to go to Italy. He adores this country and is perfectly able to go by himself as a responsible adult if he likes.
As for the italian women , they are so beautiful... look at Monica Belluci lol, no wonder everyone fall for their charms.

In all honesty I think the blame on him is exagerete, the guy simply told us his impression about his trip. His joy is visible in his words.I am glad he shares few pieces of his life with us.

Hey this music is like the "candyman" the return of the good old time. Thank Special for this little travel in time.

I wanted her to win! poeple have no taste really.

  14. Elinor... echo your thoughts about the Air France tragedy, really sad.

With Susan Boyle, she should never have been put forward for that show in the first place. She was completely manipulated by the tv company involved, and it should have been obvious that she wouldn't be able to cope. The dance group that won were far more talented and definately deserved to win.

    ReplyDelete
  15. **One thing to remember, alot of those prostitutes in central Rome aren't women!**

Yeah that thought had crossed my mind. ; )

Sense & Sensibility is on right now. Always remember the comment Ang made about never working with sheep after he did the movie. And then he did.

I heard about the AirFrance jet this morning Elinor, sending prayers to the families.

And Susan Boyle - I think she was somewhat sheltered to begin with and then to be thrust into the public eye so quickly, it would be too much for most. Here's hoping that she is taken care of, and that those around her put her health and well being first before the business.

    ReplyDelete
  16. ^ It was bad from the start - people expressing surprise that someone ungroomed and messy could actually SING *eyes roll* and it's taken a predictable course since then.

As for Austin, I hope he had a great holiday in Italy, and he must go to Venice next time. Cute photo by the Trevi fountain. :)

  17. Maybe Jake and Austin, however endearing and adorable we find / have found them, just aren't that exceptional./

Is it really that exceptional to live your life fully as the person you are? If so, we really are living in sad times.

  18. "With Susan Boyle, she should never have been put forward for that show in the first place. She was completely manipulated by the tv company involved, and it should have been obvious that she wouldn't be able to cope."

I didn't follow the " business show" around her to be honest, only saw her singing and find her so touching with her improbable look. She is authentic.

I hope the best for her after, and wish people around really take care of her

    ReplyDelete
  19. "Is it really that exceptional to live your life fully"

No, of course not, and in their private lives, ie not just behind closed doors, but with friends, family and associates, they probably do live their lives as fully as the people they are. Publicly, and lets be honest, I don't think many people here know what living publically is, they obviously project a different life. It may not be a perfect situation, but until someone alot higher up the HW food chain changes it, it will take alot of guts and although it would be fabulous for Jake & Austin to lead the way, you can't blame them for holding back a little.

(sorry, I really am on rant central today!)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Maybe I was a bit harsh considering it is just one post, but I did it for a number of reasons. One, I know people think I give Austin a pass while dumping on Jake, but I've always said that if Austin did something that bothered me I'd say so, and I wasn't going to break that promise to myself.

Second, he could have made the bit with the stewardess more ambiguous, but being a writer I think he probably deliberately chose to end his story on a note that made him look straight.

Third, I'd like to think Austin is not going to completely follow in Jake's footsteps, and that he'll read posts like mine and think about what he's doing before taking that next step.

We all know Jake's pr uses OMG and WFT2 to make corrections. I'd just hate to see Austin start doing the same thing.

Speaking of which, I had to look at Reeke Weekly yesterday and the softball pictures, I see they took Tom's pointer to heart and mentioned how much Reese's mother adores Jake.

    ReplyDelete
  21. oh no destiny, you now make me sound like a bearding apologist, which I'm certainly not.

however, I'm still in the 'let's give Austin a free pass', mainly because bearding obviously totally destroys a man's looks, and Austin still looks fairly good (in fact getting better by the day). Just check out Hayden C...whatever and the woman from the OC on Just Jared. It's like a reeke photo op, only not really as professional.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Maybe what I am going to say is weird or provocative to some but as mush as Reeke bother me , I am not in the jake's destroyed look team. In many pics I find him in great shape and sexy and well attractive, and in pic with austin it's even more explosive lol.

Few days ago I saw all IHJ gallery because never did before lol , quite interesting cause there are so much pics I never noticed, it's fun to watch!

  24. No need to apologize Meg, I don't think of you that way. I think you're right that I was probably way too harsh because Austin has done nothing compared to what Jake has done.

My main reason for writing that was in hopes that it won't fall on deaf ears, but realistically I know that at the end of the day Jake and Austin probably don't care what people here or at wft2think.

I just remember all to well that I, at least, excused a lot of little things in Jake when Reeke was just starting, and then, WHAM! This time I'm not going to do that because, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Seems Austin is following Jake's lead. Too bad cause I think Jake will regret his choices in the long run. The whole thing just saddens me.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Destiny, I enjoyed your post and thoroughly agree. It's a slippery slope the way these kind of tactics can grow and end up taking on a life of their own in time. I'd hate to see Austin follow in Jake's footsteps.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I hate to say such things but not wanting to be naive, I think Austin care of his career too, so....

Ok it's the last negative though I post today!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well, just a quick one (lol - quick, yeah, right) before I take a small siesta.

Wow, Destiny, even though it was nominated for Most Harsh, it was extremely well spoken. It really was a speech of beauty.

I'm not going to go either way right now because I still haven't read Austin's stuff except for what Special put up today.

But, whatever one puts up on their blog, and this goes for that Twitter Dee & Twitter Dum or even LJ personal accounts as well, if you're going to retell something that happened to you, at least get the main gest of it correct & honest. Sometimes details get mixed up or forgotten, but I'm talking about the main meat of the story. "I met so & so." "I saw so & so with so & so." "I visited such & such place." "So & so asked me out on a date." "So & so was kissing so & so." Okay? Those kinds of statements are easy ones. It'd be a great & noble gesture if when someone puts something like that up on their blog, that it is the truth. Because if it's not, then I think that puts yourself in a pretty bad spot. How else is anyone to believe anything else you write? There's a difference, seems to me, between embellishing a little bit and just, well, telling a plain ol' lie. Because then, one would have to ask, "Well, why did you have to lie?" or "Why did I have to lie to make my story more appealing?" People might be surprised that the real, truthful things that go on in their lives just might be more interesting than something that's fabricated. And not only that, but then you don't have to stress or worry about being embarrassed in getting caught in a lie. Why risk that?

And speaking of fabricating, my next comment is going to address something that Destiny brought up earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Speaking of which, I had to look at Reeke Weekly yesterday and the softball pictures, I see they took Tom's pointer to heart and mentioned how much Reese's mother adores Jake.LOL! Destiny, I haven't seen this yet; at this point, I don't think I need to risk breaking a rib laughing at the latest & greatest from US Reekly.

But Reeke PR needs to be called out on this one. Because once again, OMG'ers have put themselves on the free-on-board payroll of Reeke with full intention of seeing their tips & requests carried through. And just like the little soldiers & students in practicus of Bearding that they are, they came through.

Alright, class? Let us now recall from May 11, 2009, please look up at the overhead projector for Exhibit A. tap!tap! Here we see,

From Oh My Godot, the 11th day of May, 2009:

I'm still waitin' for it. When I see it, I'll stop bringing it up. But until then, you won't convince me at all that she was there. And they could have 1001 pics of bikeriding, sightseeing, and luggage checking, but what I want is the courtyard pic. So, in the meantime, what I have are the bookends, but no great novel to go in between.

I reckon that's a pretty cheeky comment & I just might get what I ask for, but at least I'd know the truth, right?

And while the Wish List is out, what about the other side of the coin? Where's Reese's family? Has Jake been to her hometown with her to visit her family? In 2 years now, this has never come up that I've seen. It's been a priority in the rags to see how well Reese is accepted into his family. Well, what about Jake into hers?

I don't even know anything about Reese's family. How many siblings she has. I've heard she has a brother, but that's it.
There, class, we have one of 2 examples of probable Cause. (Mr. JerseyTom provides the other of which our court reporter does not have for display at this very moment but has in fact witnessed such said quote as reported by Destiny) And Destiny provides an eyewitness account from the latest issue of that literary publication of scandalous misinformation, US Reekly which we will now call
    "Effect".

Perhaps since there seems to result such repeated examples of Student learning from Teacher, we could invite Team Reeke PR to sit in some evening as a guest of OMG to further develop those fine points of Successful Bearding 101.

Although the well could be about tapped out at this point, the invitation withdrawn, and subsequently, Team Reeke PR, you could just, well, sort of be on your own from this point on.

I remembered today an acceptance speech Jake gave when he received an award from the ACLU. This was around Brokeback time. Jake said he hadn't done anything yet to deserve the award but promised he would do everything he could to earn it in the future. Sad to think Jake in the last 2 years has done nothing to earn this award given for Civil Liberties. What Jake has done and others like him including now Austin Nichols has kept the Gay Rights movement where it has always been. Gay people dont have the same civil liberties as everyone else. Jake and Austin and other people with the power and influence to make a difference still live in the closet. You know what this tells young gay people it tells them they are not good enough. They need role models like Jake or Austin or Wentworth or Hayden or Jodie. But these folks wont help.

When Jake excepted his Bafta award for best supporting actor for Brokeback he said the movie meant more to him socially then it did artistically. He had to have lied that night. His behavior the last two years shows that he cares nothing about the social position that gay men and and women have in America. Shame on Jake. Shame on Austin. How can they look at themselves in the mirror. Thanks for giving us the finger Jake.

  32. Lol PG, that sure would be some session.

A few more points, and then I'll stop flogging the horse. I meant it when I said I know Austin and Jake probably can't come out given the kind of work they are doing, and I don't expect that, especially from someone like Austin who ha a less establisehd career. But there is no excuse for bearding or blatant lies. Austin's earlier posts were different in tone, and also had a story-telling component I didn't see in the latest one. He just spent a year on OTH without having to start yelling "I'm straight" and it did not hurt him one bit. Why is he doing it now.

I do not think Disney or anyone else paid for the trip or that he went in case he was seen in Italy.

  34. Tom, hate to say this, but since Jake and Austin have proved such disappointments to you, maybe you should try and find some other potential role models, or, why not try and be a role model yourself.

    also...

Okay, Jake's caved in to vanity / greed / security / ambition etc. Who on this blog, if you had $10 million dangled in front of you, combined with having to bail out broke parents, a private life to protect, and some serious delusions of being an a-list movie star, wouldn't do the same.

Blame the system not the man.

The disappearance of the Air France plane and the shooting of Dr. Tiller while he ushered at his church.

Elinor, my thoughts go out to all your fellow countrymen & women over this plane vanishing. How
hard for the families of all involved.

And my prayers to the personal family & church family of Dr. Tiller as well as the family of the suspected gunman. Just a real tragic event and a sad outcome for everyone involved.

  42. I know you're all thinking oh oh, here she goes again, but I can't let what Reggie said go.

I think someone who would say something like that can't possibly have experienced loss in their life, otherwise you'd know that what people regret most is not spending more time time with that person, even if you spent as much time as you could with that person.

I find it particularly galling that this cavalier attitude towards money and life involves gay men. I came of age just when AIDS was beginning to ravage the gay community. I lost one of my closest friends to AIDS when he was only in his early 30, and 15 years later I still can't think about him without regretting the time we never had together because we were in separate cities and let other things get in the way of seeing each other more often than we did. I've also seen what that loss did to the gay community, particularly the arts. Freddie Mercury, Keith Herring, Ricky Wilson and Alvin AIiley, just to name a few. I lived through a decade of worrying that I would lose other friends, other artists I loved, and maybe that made me appreciate more than others that what matters is living your life in a way that you won't regret.

I've never heard of anyone who at the end of their life regretted that they didn't have more dollars in the bank.

God forbid something was to happen to Austin tomorrow, do you think Jake would tell himself, hey, at least I've got $10 million dollars and can buy me some rent boys to keep me from being lonely? Even I don't think that badly of Jake. I think he'd be regretting all the things he did without Austin for fear of anyone thinking he was, heaven forbid, gay, and regretting that Austin will never get the chance to do the things I'm sure they're telling themselves they'll do when they're older and their careers in HW are over.

People who think they're going to live forever or have more than one life do so at their own peril.

  43. Elinor, I'm also really saddened about that Air France plane.

And Dr. Tiller. I am so upset about that. The acts of hate that people do in the name of life. I read on the internet a post by someone talking about all the wonderful things he had done for people over his many years in practice, and it practically brought me to tears. As my gf said, the killer should be condemned for the rest of his life to helping all those poor women in Africa who have horrible complications after pregnancies that go wrong and tear them up.

The American Idol runner up has never denied being gay, and everyone at the show knew his orientation, and the media all but confirmed where he stood after Queerty was blogging about it for the entire season. But Adam has never come out and said those two words: "I'm gay." In the next issue of Rolling Stone, however, he'll do just that. Why'd it take so long to acknowledge the obvious? Perhaps it's because American Idol's producers legally required him to stay mum.

It's no secret that Idol production company 19 Entertainment owns most every aspect of a contestant's life. That's the trade-off for competing on the show: Simon Fuller holds the deed to your soul in exchange for the chance at worldwide celebrity and riches. It also means 19 Entertainment gets to tell you what you're allowed to speak to the press about, and that includes your personal life.

Lambert's mother Leila reveals that not only has Lambert signed away his right to free speech, but so has she. "We signed a contract with Idol and unless it has been set up by them, I'm not allowed to answer," says Leila, acknowledging the deal Team Lambert struck with producers. Her statement also confirms the Rolling Stone interview where Lambert will "officially" come out is part of a packaged Idol press onslaught (because you didn't know before how music marketing worked).

Most significantly, however, is that because Lambert is instructed by 19 Entertainment on what to speak about publicly, this means Idol producers are on board not just with Lambert being openly gay, but with pushing that storyline as part of his artist profile.

Of course, they only permitted Lambert to speak about it after the show wrapped, but Rolling Stone will hit before Lambert's first album and tour does, which means they must be confident they can market a gay singer. And that, friends, is pretty remarkable.

  45. Very scary about the Air France plane. That scenario crosses my mind when flying to Europe so it really gave me the chills.

I'm still having problems with the sogo blog ever since it changed. It works better on Firefox, but is still not consistent. I'm not ready to say anything negative about Austin based on his comments yet. They were way too vague. I'll see how things develop. He was just a "guest" on OTH until recently and there is still time to drop him since the script is not even written. On the other hand I do agree with Destiny re cherishing the time with others over money. I've known many lost to AIDS and some living with it now. It does change your perspective. Jake and Austin are still pretty young. Not sure they get it yet.

  46. For what it's worth, great posts Destiny. Austin sure does not get a pass from me. So, he meets all these girls he falls in love with in Italy but can't find any girls to fall for in LA? Is that why he has no girlfriend for years and years?

I'm sick of the stupid lies.

What has 3 years of bearding done for Jake? Maybe Austin would like to answer in his next post.

  47. Would openly gay Jake and Austin have the same career opportunities as their straight and closeted colleagues?
