Out Spotlight XCVIV

Today's Out Spotlight is Robert Patrick, gay American playwright, poet, lyricist, and short-story writer and novelist. While ignored by mainstream critics and Patrick is a founding father of gay drama in America and an influence in the development of gay drama in England. His work has influenced his contemporaries as well as younger playwrights that followed..

Born in Kilgore Texas in 1937 to immigrant workers, he was raised in various places in the South and Southwest. But it wasn't until he arrived in New York in the mid-1960's when his real life began when he found his way to the Caffe Cino, where both off-off-Broadway and gay theater in America were born.

Patrick, then known to his friends as Una O'Connor, worked by day as a typist in the city morgue but after work threw himself body and soul volunteering at the Cino, as actor, stage hand, publicist, co-manager, and playwright. His first play, The Haunted Host, was produced at the Cino in 1964.

After Joe Cino's death in 1967, Patrick, who had already written dozens of plays, moved his base of operation to the Old Reliable Tavern Theatre in the East Village and, occasionally, to La Mama, the center of downtown theatrical experimentation.

By the late 1960s, he had produced off-Broadway and once, with Kennedy's Children, briefly on Broadway. When London's Gay Sweatshop began presenting plays in 1975, two of his plays, One Person and The Haunted Host, were included in the first season. (Kennedy's Children had been produced in London in 1974.)

Patrick's early work reflects the restless experimentation with theatrical form of the late 1960s. Monologues, musical extravaganzas, television parodies, nudity, drag, and camp humor fills his varied early work. Patrick's best work is in his more conventional plays, satirical look at the many ways gay men, trained to hate themselves, avoid the possibility of love. The hilarious, biting satires of gay life in New York in the 1960s and 1970s.

His play T-Shirts (1978) pictures the sexual marketplace of gay society as "a conglomerate as heartless as Con Ed," in which youth and beauty are the only currency. In T-Shirts, Patrick dramatizes a conflict between a handsome hunk and a cynical, flamboyant queen that results in a tie in which both learn about the compromises they have made.

In The Haunted Host (1964), a playwright, determined to avoid repeating a disastrous past relationship, is visited by the spitting image of his beautiful ex-lover and realizes that he has shut himself off from the possibility of love.

Patrick can also, as he does in the one-act plays contained in Untold Decades (1988), celebrate the ways in which gay men have managed to love in times of repression and, recently, epidemic.

Patrick's self-portraits appear throughout his work, never more poignantly than in his best-known play, Kennedy's Children (1973), in which, in alternating monologues, five regulars of a bar recollect where they were the night John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Sparger, a sometime drag queen and gay actor in a welter of experimental theater events, recounts the history of a thinly disguised Caffe Cino, which for him represented the 1960s.

In the 1970's, the 1974 production of The Haunted Host marked the first time Harvey Fierstein appeared on the legitimate stage as a male (having previously only acted as a drag performer. Fierstein, later on, included a recording of Patrick's monologue, Pouf Positive on his compact disc, This Is Not Going to Be Pretty. The same year was also the first season of gay theater in the United Kingdom, to which Patrick contributed three plays. The Broadway-theatre production of his play Kennedy's Children (1975) earned Shirley Knight a 1976 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play. Patrick's play My Cup Ranneth Over (1976) was commissioned by Marlo Thomas, a vehicle for her and Lily Tomlin. Although a production with them never happened, that play went on to become Patrick's most produced.

In the 80's Patrick wrote, Blue Is For Boys, which was the first play about gay teenagers, and "Blue is for Boys Weekends" in honor of the play were declared by Manhattan Borough Presidents in 1983 and 1986. His work, The Trial of Socrates was the first gay play presented by New York City. Patrick also wrote Untold Decades (1988), a history of gay-male life in the United States, told in a humorous vein; and Temple Slave, a "totally romanticized" novel about the early days of Off-Off Broadway and gay theater.

Patrick now lives in California and still writes. He has ghostwritting several screenplays for film and television; contributed poems and reviews to Playbill, FirstHand, and Adult Video News magazines; and had his short stories included in numerous anthologies. He reviews adult gay-male videos for several publications. He has also wrote a novel Temple Slave in 1994, which chronicles the years of Caffe Cino before writing his memoirs, Film Moi, and the plays: Hollywood at Sunset and Michelangelo's Models.

There's still time to join in, the JFC discussion has been extended through today.

  1. Absolutely awesome post today - and love the music. I haven't kept up with JFC, unfortunately, so I can't join in the discussion, but I wish I had. I have only seen it once, and was very impressed. :)

    Have a great Sunday -

  2. Good morning! What fantastic weather we are having here in the Sunshine State. The trees are starting to really turn now; it's an early fall by at least a couple of weeks.

Had a great time at the outdoor craft festival I went to yesterday. Other than that, I've been staying in with the dogs and writing like crazy. We're going to get some chaps up pretty quick soon as I get off of here. You guys, I've got 5 chapters done, of which I think 4 will be going up shortly. The 5th has not been beta'd at all. I am just on a roll right now; can't stop, lol.

I didn't get my JFC watched either and I forgot to bring it with me. In fact, I don't even bring movies with me anymore when I dogsit. I never watch them, lol. But I remember that scene with Cissy holding the gun. I hated that scene.

That Hollywood Dame thing was awesome. Way to go, whoever that was. Heck, if I was them, I wouldn't have even printed that. That "story" went over like a big lead balloon.

I am fighting some ambivalent feelings now when it comes to Mr. Jakey G. I never thought I would be at this point where I just don't get "excited" over him anymore. Isn't that something. I mean, he is looking nice right now. But it's just not the same. He's got such a distant vibe to him now and I cannot identify with it anymore.

This realization has finally hit me this weekend when we have these pics, vids, tweets, etc of him in Pittsburgh and I just can't get into it. I'm not saying it's a bad thing like I'm not going to be around because I am. But for just right now, I am more into this Robert Buckley because the guy is full of life & sunshine (wow, how loopy & dopey is that?!), all smiles. I'm reading current interviews of him and this is the kind of stuff I can get into. Check this TV Guide question/answer out:

TVGuide.com: What's it like filming in Wilmington, N.C.?
Buckley: There are aspects of being in that smaller city that I love, [but] the one downside is that since it's a small town, you can't get away with doing much without everyone finding out. There's a café across the street and I woke up and went straight down in my pajamas, bed-head and slippers. The woman behind the counter was like, "We took a picture on set Friday and I blog about the show." I was thinking, this is great. Now she's going to blog that I dressed like a hobo. But everyone's been really sweet.

LOLLL! That killed me. Small town. No wonder Austin probably skips weekends. All quiet on the Austin front for awhile. What in the heck is that guy up to?

Anyway, maybe I'm like you, Sienna, in that the part of me that was just fascinated with Jake has really been killed after the culmination of all that he has become. It's just like "gone", never to be the same again. It's really sad.

But no need to fret and be down! It can always change, I suppose; we'll see. I am not giving up. Just always in tune to what is going on inside of me at all times.

Okay, now off to see about doing some LJ work.

  3. I've heard of the plays, especially Kennedy's Children, but I've never actually seen any of them, and couldn't have told you who wrote them, let alone anything about him. Interesting that he was part of the Cino group; some of those 50s and 602 radicals were not exactly enlightened when it came to gay people. If I ever found the time it would be interesting to read some of these plays.

It is raining here, boy do I hope it stops soon as I'm heading out for a football game. At least it's only spitting.

I feel the same way you do PG. I keep waiting for the old feelings to come back, but I don't know that they will. It's not just the bearding, but everything else involved, like his choice of Reese, who pulls stunts like this to get attention, and he just goes along with it.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Why wait outside Jake's closet door when there are others who are out there enjoying life, achieving success, making a difference?

Like Ellen and Portia, Neil Patrick Harris, John Barrowman, Cheyenne Jackson, Sir Ian McKellan, Adam Lambert, Cynthia Nixon, Russell Tovey, Rufus Wainwright, Wanda Sykes, Alan Cumming...

    ReplyDelete
  5. I know, Celebrate, it's finally dawning on me that this is what Jake wants. Who would go through this for three stinking years if this wasn't what you agreed to do?

I think that first year, year & a half, I was thinking/hoping that he was "forced" into this, that he was doing it against his desires. But after 3 years?

And it's just not the time lapse. As I look at guys like Buckley who are the same age as he, or also Wentworth, you don't see them doing the bearding thing to this extreme extent that Jake has done.

And that is what hit me this weekend as I have scrolled through a ton of pictures of Robert. And then I look at what Jake has done for 3 years, endless & countless photo ops with that cold, horrid woman and I'm thinking Man. What a huge, huge difference.

I cannot separate 3 years of Reeke from these latest lone pictures of Jake. I thought that was what I was waiting for. Pictures of him on "his own" once again - I thought then that everything would come around again to all is right.

But it has not been so. I cannot separate or forget these past 3 years of all that crap. And it's been nothing but just crap.

Again, not to be a downer and I'm not saying I'll feel this way next month, but somehow this is pretty startling to me that I can't get too whipped up about him on his set or picturing with fans. It's like too little, too late as JoJo sang.

And PR, don't go gettin' all excited thinking I've leaped over the fence. Au contraire. I still think Jake is gay and he's bearding and he's still with the Goose Man. But man, the fairy tale is long over, that's all. All that's left is ashes as far as I'm concerned right now.

I think that first year, year & a half, I was thinking/hoping that he was "forced" into this, that he was doing it against his desires.

    Jake was forced into bearding.

Disney will spend $150 million + marketing costs on PoP, with bearding Jake is showing his commitment.

    ReplyDelete
  7. He wasn't forced to sign for a Disney summer blockbuster. He wanted this life he's leading and the only way to get it was to stay in the closet and because he was so bad at keeping the door shut he needed to go big and bearding with Reese Witherspoon is about as big as it gets.

  8. Nice interview with Austin. (inspiring some thoughts that are percolating for posts)

    You gotta laugh at this:

TDW: Have you thought about getting an official Twitter account?

Nichols: Twitter? What’s twitter? Sounds like a term for a titty twister.

You know if there's a new Twitter account called Purplenurple suspect it's Austin. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'll have to listen to that new interview of Austin's, Special. I haven't gotten a chance to yet.

Shame on Austin for using that word. I hate that word, lol. It's awful.

Little Dog's mama uses that word for a dog that is very spoiled and whiney. She used to call her neighbor's dog that all the time, calling her a titty baby. lol.

I can't believe I just typed that in my comment. I hate that word.

    blushes

  10. Barkley & Libby's mama & dad ought to be arriving home in another couple of hours. It has been a very quiet Sunday so far.

I'm not a footballer anymore so it's the Brady Bunch marathon that's on the TV in the hearth room for the dogs to watch, lol. And for me to listen to.

  11. PG, thanks for posting all those new chapters. Have not read them yet, but now I have some reading to look forward to tonight.

Reading these out spotlights always makes me feel so insignificant when I read all their accomplishments. What have I done? I cleaned my house.

I see that one of Isherwoods books has been made into a movie. "A single man" or maybe it was A single life, I cant recall the exact title now. I will definitely see it when it comes out, having learned so much about Isherwood and his mate from a prior spotlight.

I know how you feel PG, about being indifferent to Jake. He seems so disinterested himself. I am hoping we get to see his personality again when he does some Brothers promo.

  12. FYI: Sophia Bush on Craig Ferguson, October 8th

    ReplyDelete
  13. Damn I wanted to see Austin on Craig Ferguson. Now that would be the best interview. Witty banter that could go surrealistic goofy at any moment, and a tongue in cheek flirty wink. You know Austin would be eying Craig's snake... mug. Snake mug people. Just don't know if Austin could stop cracking up

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thanks OTH for the interview link and information on Sophia.

M, the movie you're talking about is directed by the Tom Ford and has been getting really good buzz.

I'm convinced Jake wants us to think of Reeke when we see him alone. That's one reason why I think the overload, and why we rarely see him with anyone else.

PR and Reeke don't want to give people an opportunity to think of him in any other way, i.e., gay and or to think of him as having any other life.

IMO that has absolutely killed most of his fandom. Maybe it won't matter for a movie like PoP, but then again, I don't think PoP is going to bring them in the way Depp brought them in for Pirates either.

    ReplyDelete
  15. There are photo-graphs of Austin from filming the other night.
There is also a twitter today of somebody that saw he and Sofia together in Wilmington.

I don't think Austin hides, I just think he is living his life, honestly.

It's just not as some believe he is.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I love that interview with Austin. It's more like the old Austin, a bit quirky, snappy answers, and the interviewer asked some questions I've wondered about. Also liked the fact that asked him about Pedestrian and not just OTH.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Craig Ferguson is my favorite. We record him and watch his show faithfully. Austin's humor would be a good match for him. I'm sure we will see him on the show eventually. If they have Sophia, they will most likely have Austin, and Robert too. Even in this most recent interview, Austin's sense of humor shows through. The only thing that may keep Austin off the show is Craig's brazenness. I would not put it past Craig to ask Austin if he is Grey Goose.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sorry Destiny I can't really see what you are saying about Jake making us think of Reeke when he is alone from the pictures of him smiling and happy, with the guys at the US Open or the pictures on the set. In fact I think it shows that he is so much more happy without her and himself than any other message.

    ReplyDelete
  19. M -

Totally can see Craig asking if he drinks Austin Nichols. Or maybe he should change his name to his favorite liquor.

    ReplyDelete
  20. without her and himself than any other message.

    Should be:

    without her and by himself

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think it's interesting what Austin is saying in his interviews.

His interview after the charity event for the fallen police officer.

"More serious is what co-star Austin Nichols told me he was looking forward to the most with the new story lines this season. “Honesty and truth is what I want”, said Nichols. “Let's deal with issues people our age are dealing with...things that are not exaggerated”, Nichols says as to what he wants to see happen with the show and his character this season. "

Now this interview. He is being asked what storyline he would like to see his character have. He wants wants to see him aproach marriage and perhaps the topic of children. He also wants him to continue to be a movie producer in some way. Then he talks about how he really didn't want to sign on with the show as a regular, he feared what would be written for him for 22 episodes. Yet Austin agreed to sign for two more years, meaning if the show gets picked up for an 8th season he will be there.

He said he wants to play topics that deal with the stuff that goes on in people his age's life. I cannot help but think that what is playing out on screen is very similar to what is playing out in his own life.

I predict that he and Sophia Bush marry in 2010, long before Jake and Reese make a trip down the aisle.

    Passing by

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nah.
Austin won't marry Sophia and Jake won't marry the beard.

  23. He said he wants to play topics that deal with the stuff that goes on in people his age's life. I cannot help but think that what is playing out on screen is very similar to what is playing out in his own life.

You mean like his serious long-term relationship with Jake and Babies Tile?
Yeah, it really does look like he wants to portray the things that are going on in his life...

    ReplyDelete
  24. That was a great interview with Autsin - I'm not sure how to read his comments about personal things, sometimes I wonder if he teases - but what is clear and does come shining through is his love of film and books, and his creativity. You wonder why people go into acting, with all the BS that comes with it, and this must be why. He's got good taste - Inglorious Basterds was great, and Christoph Waltz was just amazing, awesome, incredible in it - Oscar for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  25. ^^and his love of writing, I should add. :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's nice that he's a romantic too. That comes shining through, his lucky partner. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I took the comment about marriage and babies as possibly being in contrast to the "glamour" for lack of a better word, of the single life that shows like OTH focus on so much, and perhaps to his thinking it would provide for meatier material. It could also just be a joking reference to Kate & Jon and shows of that ilk. I think Austin was having a lot of fun with this interview, look at his answer about volcanoes and glitter (lol) raining down on Brulian.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I totally agree about Jake looking happier when he is not with Reese. Doesn't mean he and PR don't want us to think of him as half of Reeke, rather than a man about town on his own. You just have to look at pr-friendly sites like JJ where they almost always work in a reference to the other one even when pictured alone or with others. I'm sure PR lights up like a Christmas tree every time that happens.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Destiny, stop reading the text and just look at the pics. Easy peasy.

    ReplyDelete
  30. What I think when I see pictures has nothing to do with the text, which I usually read long after I first see pictures. What I said about the text has to do with what I think Jake wants people to think. He wants people to think "Jake, that guy who is dating that A lister Reese and is such a good boyfriend and stepfather", note "Jake, that gay/sexually ambiguous hot guy".

You don't have to like ketchup to have it be the first thing you think of when you see french fries.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't think that he is telling them put Reese's name on all the copy. If you look at the PR and yes twitter numbers there are 3x more times Reese's name comes out attached to something. And how she had her publicist put that she was signed on for a movie called Pharma Girl, when Jake has his announcement about Love & Other Drugs and it doesn't even have a script yet. I think its more that she can't stand that he gets more press than her, and she wants her name attached to anything she can. Come on story about buying groceries and fixing a chicken leg? Also I think sites put the names on it that are going to draw people to go there. That's just the way I see it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Unlike Jake, Austin was asked directly about his relationship with Jake. He said that they are friends and not in a romantic relationship. He has noted in several interviews that he is attracted to and dates woman.

Unlike, Jake, who seems to be a very guarded man with his PR team making sure he projects a certain image to the public. Austin seems to be a guy who lives a normal life, says what he wants and does what he wants, doesn't seem all that worried about public opinion.

Unlike Jake, Austin isn't afraid to blog about his life, work on really small indy projects or do a couple of youtube segments on book club readings and O&A's ..

Austin doesn't have drivers, security, private plans or group of assistants standing by waiting to serve him.

You won't find Austin walking around Rome with his girlfriend and bodyguard right behind him the entire time, ready to take on a couple of photographers.

It always baffles me how so many other a-list stars can get around on their own and not require the amount of security Jake & Reese do.

I think it would be nice if Austin could finally be free of this PR nightmare. I'm still waiting for Jake to make a statement about his dear friend Heath Ledgers death. Odds are we never once see him with his god-daughter Matilda.
    Just another pr move.

    passingby

  33. Sophia was recently asked directly about her relationship with Austin. She said that they are friends and not in a romantic relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Passingby, some of us have been following Jake and Austin for over three years now. I'm guessing you're new to all of this, but honey, there is nothing you can tell us about Austin that we don't already know. That interview when Austin was asked about Jake has been dissected more times than I can count.

Bottom line, Austin never did directly answer the question. How easy it would have been to just say NO. But he didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nice, I found your comment interesting and it helped put a different look at things.

I agree, I like that Austin is really into reading and poetry. I like his educational background.

    ReplyDelete
  36. sophia was asked last season about her relationship with Austin, she has not been asked directly about it since filming of Season 7 began.

She was asked at a press event, are you dating your co-star and her response was, I am?.

Austin was asked by a fan at the end of filming the other night.
He did not answer, he said I'll ask her. He did not say no.

I'm very aware of this 3yr Toothy Tile site and the original toothy tile forum as well.

You have lots of people seeing them all over the place in Wilmington and saying they are a couple. You have NYC hand holding and then you have two reports of them in the Hamptons. They were in NYC for the photo event and then she was their to support her friend and her brother. She is friends with designer Alisha Levine (who she was photographed with) and her brother Seth. Seth Levine owns the Pop Yogurt (just opened and she was photographed with his sister & he there) and he is also a partner at Georgica in East Hampton, which sophia & austin were at twice and whe was photographed at. Austin was never supposed to be photographed with her in NYC and that's why he didn't stand outside the pop yogurt with her or appear in the photo at Georgica with her.

They have done very little to use this as a PR move, they were seen at the airport, one time was by a fan and not Press, the other time was with another co-star. Once they were together without others caught by the paps in LA.

Austin is contracted with a show on the CW network for the next two years, should it get an 8th season after this. What's the benefit of faking a relationship at this point? The show is near the end of it's run and it's bringing 2.5m.viewers tops. It puts Austin in wilmington for most of the year and out of LA.

Faking a relationship is not being seen by local folks in Wilmington who only blog about it on OTH sites. It's making sure you are seen in LA at events together.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I like the fact that Austin has managed to keep up with so many current movies despite what must be a grueling shooting schedule, if it's like every other tv show. Despite being asked to name one big movie, he really did talk about smaller, independent films.

Nice to hear his mom just won another championship, not an easy thing I would think now that she's no longer say, Austin's age.

    ReplyDelete
  38. passing by, while I respect your thoughts and all the back up you list for your conclusion, I really, really don't think you're going to convince many, if any, here. Frankly, I would give it up.

To me, as I said before, Sophia and Austin are about as much a real couple as little Dora the Explorer and her little friend, Diego.

What they are doing is promoting the show. There could be a catrillion twitters of Sophin sightings and I still would not be convinced it was anything more. Marriage for Sophin? Man, They haven't even had the obligatory "Rome" coming out kiss yet. The most they have done to this point is hold fingers, they haven't even held entire hands.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sophia is # 3 on Buddy's list of most eligible bachelorettes. Her status is listed as "divorced" and no mention of a boyfriend, unlike other actresses on the list, not even a "rumored to be dating".

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't think there has been an offical statement from Sophia or Austin. plus if she isn't married than she is single.

This is what I'm saying, that OTH gossip is so far down on the gravy chain, there is no reason for them to fake anything.

**Should be noted that Austin also mentions that his mother was fighting cancer a few years ago**

    ReplyDelete
  41. What they are doing is promoting the show.

^^ However it may be or seem convenient for them both if they are promoting the show, it's not a bad thing. They could be dating and promoting the show. That way the producers get more from the die hard love story fanship. However, PG, you don't know if they are dating or not either. You are entitled to your beliefs just as anyone else, but you don't know anything about Austin and Sophia dating situation.

Has anyone here ever gave a thought to Jake having a bodyguard because of maybe some sick fans, or a stalking situation? He has had this same bodyguard around him at times before Reese was apart of the picture. Has anyoe realized this. I'm always amazed at some who know all about celebrity's lifes as if they are there or in HW stars inner circle. Funny thing, Stephen Kings "Misery" was just on TV last night. Kathy bates was amazing as the crazy, batty and looping fan who knew all about the star and his every move. And some fans seem to go by pictures only, then make their own stories. No need for confirmed information.
    Interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  42. ^^Yawn. We've seen this tactic before.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Stop...

It's on the CW and it's hardly bringing in 2.5 million viewers.

Rumors on or off camera won't help increase ratings and the point is pretty mute.. The show is in it's 7th season, it already has it's viewers, it's not a new product.

Austin, I'm sure has been a barely working actor, it must be nice to have a constant life and paycheck for a few years.

    ReplyDelete
  44. What

I know that both Jake and Heath had threats when Brokeback came out, so can understand the bodyguard thing. While so many accepted its meaning and message there are others who see it as threatening.

Safety and security are priorities to Jake, look at what happen when the one blog disclosed where he was going to live in SC (lawyers cease & desist) and the requirements for his place when he was living in London. (entry into residence through garage,) for a couple examples.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well, passingby you just gave yourself away. You're not the OTH Sophia/Austin fangirl some of us thought you were. You're the person who eventually starts talking about what a loser Austin is.

OTH is considered a hit despite it's small audience because it is number one with women 18 to 35 in its time slot. They were very quick to order a whole season of OTH based on the strong showing of the first two episodes. Advertisers love that demographic because they figure if they get them young they will buy their products for life.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Jake only has a body guard when he is working, and that includes Reeking weekend whirlwind trips, like the one in NYC for Avon promotion. Plus the bodyguard acts as a driver as well, making sure they get to appointments, etc. on time.

That is very common for celebrities.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The woman in Misery was a figure born of my fertile imagination - Kathy Bates isn't the woman in the film, she's an actress. Noone disputes that Jake and other celebrities need protection - it's quite common and quite wise to do so. It's not just crazed fans, but crazed journalists and photographers trying to make a buck as well. Trying to slip a "Misery" reference into the posts has been tried here before. Someone needs to update their repertoire.

  48. Faking a relationship is not being seen by local folks in Wilmington who only blog about it on OTH sites. It's making sure you are seen in LA at events together.
You mean like the events in LA and NY were they were seen together? The events that started the whole relationship rumors to begin with?
And what is your problem with Sophia being out with a friend while on location?

sophia was asked last season about her relationship with Austin, she has not been asked directly about it since filming of Season 7 began.
Ah, see now I get why it was so important to you to say that it was just casual hook-ups before they started shooting Season 7 - Sophia shot your fantasy so you had to build around it!

Austin was asked by a fan at the end of filming the other night.
He did not answer, he said I'll ask her. He did not say no.

Austin also didn't say no when asked if he and Jake are dating. Oh, but I forgot that doesn't count. He's a guy and that would make Austin gay...

It's on the CW and it's hardly bringing in 2.5 million viewers.
Rumors on or off camera won't help increase ratings and the point is pretty mute.. The show is in it's 7th season, it already has it's viewers, it's not a new product.

Yes, that's like the reason they don't do any promo stuff!
Who needs that, it's not going to get any new viewers so why spend any money on it, right?

And them having just 2.5 million viewers tops is totally a good reason not to do anything for promotion either. Everybody knows only those shows that are already number one are spending any money on getting/keeping viewers, come on!

Austin, I'm sure has been a barely working actor, it must be nice to have a constant life and paycheck for a few years.
You obviously like Sophia and Sophia only, but like some here said we've been following Austin a little longer than you and he's been getting steady work. Just because you weren't interested in him back then because the work wasn't somehow connected to Sophia, doesn't mean he wasn't working.

What's with all the info on Sophias personal life anyway. She's a nice girl and she seems really sweet, but it doesn't have anything to do whatsoever with the discussion.
Don't you have to talk to some more friends so you guys can come up with another fake story of seeing Austin and Sophia together somewhere?

  49. I agree with What and Special.

Jake has gotten death threats for portraying a gay man in a movie, I don't fault him for getting wary after that.

I think the safety aspect is also a big reason why we don't see him anywhere near his house anymore.
I do think that part of Reeke is in a way a pay-off to the paps. If they leave him alone for the most part in his real personal life, they'll get fake staged pictures to sell instead.

  50. I'm actually an Austin fan...BUT..
I can accept things for what they are. It's not being all about SB's personal life, it's knowing something about the places she was photographed at during her visit to NYC and the Hamptons and who the people she was with are. The Levine's are public people, one is a known fashion designer and the other is a public restaurant owner who appeared on Hell's Kitchen.

It cost alot to live in LA, sure Austin has worked, but not on big paying movie gigs and not on a long running hit TV series. OTH will be the most steady work Austin has had in the last 5 yrs.
JFC was only a 1/2 season gig, FNL was a couple of episodes, Deadwood was 2 episodes and the movie he recently did was a couple of months work.
If OTH gets picked up for season 8, even if it doesn't it has provided Austin with 2 yrs of employment and a possilbe 3rd.

Making it in the industry is hard, there are thousands of actors and actresses out there who cannot even come close to doing what Austin has in the industry, but it's a hard industry to make a living in, especially when you don't have the industry connections that Jake Gyllenhaal has.

Does anyone really think that Austin would be on OTH if he had a bunch of other options available to him? If he does have other options then why did he sign on for such an extended period of time? Could it be for personal reasons then. Because it's got to be for either job security or personal.

    That's not knocking Austin Nichols.
I actually think he is way more talented than Jake. I also think that his appeal has risen as he has aged, he is honestly in my book one part away from being a mainstream industry name, either on a hit TV show or in a supporting movie role.

Things are not easy in the industry, just look at all the talent that has turned to TV for employment, movie stars are working on TV now.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hey, things are not easy in the employment world period.

    Work is work.

An honest job is an honest job as long as you do the best job that you can do and you do it with integrity.

This just kills me the importance that some people put on whether someone's work is on television, in commercials, movies, theatre, as a runner, make up artist, the set chef, whatever. As if this defines the kind of person that they are or their worth in society. It's a very revealing characteristic and thought process.

what, none of us is 100% on alot of things, are we? This is my strong opinion and I'm sticking to it. As far as I'm concerned, Austin & Sophia are not, I repeat, are not a real couple. You don't have to agree with me. But I won't be convinced otherwise. And unless I know who you are, please call me prairiegirl, thank you.

I don't have a problem with someone believing Austin & Sophia are a real couple, but hehehe, to visit here and expect most people to believe it is just barking up the wrong tree and a waste of good blogging time.

  52. Heard from Clarity and she wanted me to pass along to everyone that she is doing okay. The flooding wasn't as bad where she's at but it still doesn't mean that there aren't effects felt. She lost her phone service for awhile, too, which I can imagine would be really rough.

We send good thoughts your way, Clarity!

  53. Passing by - Austin got a 2 year holding deal from HBO. HBO had him for 2 years exclusive for him to do John. This means that HBO guaranteed a salary for the extent of the contract, in exchange that Austin could not do any other projects. He was the face of a series that he was the lead character, the holding secured he would theirs exclusively for the first two years if it took off. If it didn't they still had to pay. But HBO could put Austin in any project they wanted if there was no second season, just let the contract run out, or they could dissolve the contract immediately. Sure that there were monetary penalties for both sides for breaking the contract, so basically HBO had to pay up to get out. So Austin got paid one way or another for 2 years, or possibly more money.

I wouldn't worry that Austin is hurting after such a deal. And no OTH could not be part of trade, because the CW is part of the CBS/Showtime under Sumner Redstone, HBO is no part of that media group or any of his media empire.

  54. There is zero reason for them to pretend to be a couple to promote a CW 7th year series that films in Wilmington NC. There is no motivation for it or reason for it.

All a holding deal means is that HBO has first rights to employee him, to use him. It's there choice at the end of the day to either let him leave or keep him and pay him what he could have rec'd from other networks, to allow him to work on outside projects. It is doubtful he was paid an entire season's salary for a 1/2 seasons work on JFC and two episodes on Deadwood. Lots of actors get holding deals with networks, lots of times they don't work out.

If your an actor you want ot work, so I see no problem with the venue they decide to work on, lots of actors are making the choice to stay with TV because they actually get to sink their teeth into something, into a character.
Glenn Close is a shinning example of this.

    Again..
I see no point and pretending to be a couple, no advantage at all.
This show has been around for 6 yrs and two of it's main pairings thru these years were never involved off screen and still are not, they didn't pretend to be involved to promote the show.

They didn't pretend to be a couple. They provided the pictures, gossip media and fangirls provided captions.

Every actor promotes his/her show and has a direct interest in promoting himself/herself and the show.

  56. Don't think Austin is dumb enough to walk into a holding deal with HBO without having provisions for him to compensated for them dissolving the contract. John was not a half an season, 10 episodes was a season. HBO does not do a traditional 22 episode season. Even the Sopranos has 13 episodes at the most for their season, except for the weird split season 6 which should have really been 6 and 7. (check if you want)

So he had one season down and one to go. Am sure there were clause built in for that as well, for compensation for him, and outs for HBO, if things didn't work out.

And Deadwood happened BEFORE the holding deal and the JFC. It was Deadwood that got him the deal and the series.

  57. It's not just crazed fans, but crazed journalists and photographers trying to make a buck as well. Trying to slip a "Misery" reference into the posts has been tried here before.

^^ It needs to be brought up again and reminded how some fans are obsessed. Even with the fans who go out of there way to prove Jake and Austin are gay When nobody really cares. Even if they are gay and bearding.

    ReplyDelete
  58. ^^ Just as the Kathy Bates character in Misery said she stood up in the middle of the theatre watching her cliffhangers and shouted "We were rob, that's not how it's supposed to end, the hero is supposed to be dead" or something of that matter. All of the audience watching the movie was happy about the hero surviving except the one could not deal with the fantasy.
    The bitch was CRAZY!!
Prime example of taking things too far.

Let me guess - it's always someone else, never you!

  60. I know how holding deals work and I also know what the hopes were for JFC. I know how actors get in and out of deals. The network holds you with a guarantee of xyz, but guarantees are not as high as you think, networks are not that dumb. It means that your bound to that network and should another offer come along you cannot accept it. They held him and did JFC, they promised him a certain amount of episodes and they paid him for it, the show didn't make it past season one, end of deal. Actors get paid per episode and they are promised a certain amount per episode.

That's why being promoted to a series regular on OTH is important, it means he is going to get paid to appear in 22 episodes at the rate he gets per episode.

But how much money do you think these actors or actresses make per episode?? The cast of friends was getting almost 2 million per episode, but that was rare and it also was watched by 30 million people and on a major network.

OTH at it's best reached out to perhaps top 5 million viewers. So these actors might only be getting $10,000 to $20,000 per episode.
Most actors on TV do not make millions of dollars.

As for the pretending to be a couple thing... They were photographed holding hands in Soho.
They were reported to be kissing and holding hands in the Hamptons by several sources out there.

  61. As for the pretending to be a couple thing... They were photographed holding hands in Soho.
That's hardly holding hands, pictures show that there is no "dating" chemistry.

They were reported to be kissing and holding hands in the Hamptons by several sources out there.
    Usual gossip (PR) crap.

  62. Thanks Special for bringing up the holding deal with HBO.

I just wanted to add that at the time it was a huge deal, because HBO hasn't given out holding deals in years.
So no, passingby, a HBO holding deal is not something actors gets all the time.
And like Special said, you can be sure that Austin had every possible option secured.

    ReplyDelete
  63. As for the pretending to be a couple thing... They were photographed holding hands in Soho.

I had assumed you like looking at pictures of Sophia, but obviously not.
You know just as well as everybody else that it was just the pictures from the back that made it look like their hands were touching. The ones from the front clearly showed they didn't.

Just for your info though, your hands bumping into each others while walking does not constitute romantic hand-holding.
Also, I thought they were still hiding it so their parents wouldn't find out at that time???

Why aren't you ever responding to the questions about the Texas sighting you and your friend made up, btw?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Geez, here's a whole new tactic. Try to convince us Austin is not gay. I guess they had to try something new since none of the other attempts worked.

Glad to see that Jake seems to be enjoying his alone time in PGH. It's really a pretty small city, so not surprised he is covering a lot of territory.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Not PR for the show?

When's the last time a pictorially corroborated sighting of the 'new couple' hit the internet? Would that date just happen to fall right before OTH premiered? And since then?

Contracts are written how ever would be most beneficial to all parties, there isn't an iron clad template used by the industry. That's what agents are for, to work the detaiils, the fine print.

But, since you seem to possess a copy of both Austin's HBO contract and his with OTH's production company, please share. I'd be interested to see just what the going rate for a evening teen angst fest is these days.
