Austin continues his USO in Turkey after making a successful stop in Germany. Next stop Incirlik Air Base. Located in NATO's Southern Region, is located in İncirlik, 5 NM (9.3 km; 5.8 mi) east of Adana, Turkey's fifth largest city, and 56 km (35 mi) from the Mediterranean Sea. The airbase is home to United States Air Force (USAF) 39th Air Base Wing. The name 'incirlik' in Turkish means 'place of fig trees' (or 'place of figs')
In response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, Operation Enduring Freedom began in October 2001. Incirlik served as a main hub for missions in support for the war in Afghanistan, including humanitarian airlift operations, MC-130 special operations missions, KC-135 refueling missions and sustainment operations for deployed forces.
On March 12, 2004, 39th Air Base Wing was activated to provide the best mix of required support and, as new mission requirements emerge, to shoulder the burden and better contribute in the global war on terrorism and support those troops seving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many traveled through Incirlik on their deployment and return.
Austin USO tour continue to Wednesday November 25th. And with a long trip it looks like Austin still we be able to be home in the US to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Check out more pictures of Austin on the USO tour at Austin Nichols Journal.
It is interesting how things connect. As Austin is meeting men and women who are going into or coming home from combat as Jake's movie about what happens when they come home comes out.
After a screening and press conference on Saturday, Jake had to scoot back to Pittsburgh to finish his work on Love & Other Drugs, while Natalie, Tobey and Jim Sheridan were there for Sunday nights premiere at the School of Visual Arts.
More reviews are coming in and overall there are good comments about the performances of the movie. Here is an interview with Jake about Brothers and a little more about his character.
No new Crazy Tree tonight, a little Thanksgiving break, it returns next Monday, but there is One Tree Hill news.
One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl will go on hiatus next year to make room for a new CW drama series, it has been announced. Life UneXpected, which stars Britt Robertson, Kristoffer Polaha and ER's Shiri Appleby, will arrive Monday, January 18 in a 9pm timeslot after a lead-in from One Tree Hill.
Tree Hill will then go on hiatus Monday, March 8, with UneXpected taking over its slot. The same night, Gossip Girl will return to its 9pm period.
From April 19, both One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl will resume their respective 8pm and 9pm slots and continue airing until their season finales in May.

Thanks again to Austin Nichols Journal too.
GYLLENHAAL: I can say that in researching the character that I played Jim and I went to a lot of different jails all over L.A. County and to juvenile halls and what happened totally, separately from the movie, I met these kids in this writing program at this juvenile hall and they were extraordinary kids. I mean if you want to get into politics we can talk about the kids that I met in this juvi. One of them that we met was this incredible storyteller that Jim ended up putting in the movie as one of the guys in the helicopter with Tobey. I have never been to the prison system, particularly in California or any place really, to see young men. This is a whole other type of young men being put in jail and to see how extraordinary many of them were and how many of them would never get out, that was an amazing thing. It was terrifying. Fourteen year olds to 18 year olds. I still go back to visit them. I still go back to that writing program because they’re pretty extraordinary kids and many of them have moved on, but they’re still coming in. We should think about that, too.
ReplyDeleteHaving friends who work in corrections it's great to hear about programming like the writing program that's helping kids at risk in the juvenile system. Sometimes things like writing or garden just sound like ways to pass the time but these programs do make a difference in rehabilitating those serving their time.
Also find it interesting that Jake found a way to give back that is connected to writing which is passion of Austin's. Like how Austin has gotten involved in the enviroment and greener schools which is something that's a passion of Jake's.
If you watch the video clip of Jake posted, he talks about how people think Tommy is so different from Jake, but Jake makes a point about searching for love and searching for approval that every deals with on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteIt was something that stuck out to me. I can see Jake using that as a touchstone in playing Tommy.
He also talks about working during a writer's strike, and with Sam Shepard and how he helped because writers could write anything new for them, they had to do things with out them.

ReplyDeleteGyllenhaal is effortlessly believable as a drifter who finds, to his delight and ours, that fatherhood suits him well.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Sheridan was talking about the kids in the movie when he made the coment about Jake up with the kid. It sound like he was talking about Jake up with his baby, and I think the portrayal of Jake being effortless as being a father came from what he was experiencing right then.
Jake Gyllenhaal Calls Paparazzi 'Part of the Job'
ReplyDeleteJake Gyllenhaal says he doesn't mind the paparazzi too much when out with girlfriend Reese Witherspoon. [Jake doesn't mention the beard]
"Well, that's just a little part of this job," the actor, 28, told "Extra" at a junket for his new drama, "Brothers" (out Dec. 4).
"It's a part of the job, and there are days that are easier than other days," continued Gyllenhaal. "In terms of a funny guy jumping out of the corner somewhere and catching a photo of you, it just goes along with it."
"I can't say anything bad about it," he added.
For more of "Extra's" interviews with Gyllenhaal, Portman and Maguire, tune in tonight!

Connecting with the character Tommy. Working with Tommy
The interview is talking about what a great career Tobey has had and the interviewer say
"his is nothing to shag off" he corrects her and Jake corrects her saying "sag off is what you meant to say"
Freudian slip?

Jake's "exciting to watch" and always honest acting with him to paraphase some of what she said about Jake.

ReplyDeleteoK Jake, let's just stick to
Amazing, Interesting, Extraordinary.
gotta luv him.

What was this in reference to? I know, flip me on the head; I haven't watched or listened to the interview.
If he was talking about kids/children, I think I'll pass out, Special, lol.
After reading that stuff last night, I was ready to check what interview this was from. I thought maybe we had checked into an NFL football game post-game press conference. He goes on & on & on, around & around & around, and after it all, I don't know what in the heck was said.
This has nothing to do with the kids and like the other poster said Jake did not bring up or use Jake's name.
ReplyDeleteWhen you watch the interview you hear the reporter ask him about the paparazzi taking picutre of him when he is out with Reese and he then says.
"Well, that's just a little part of this job", that Jake corrects himself and then says "the job"?
I know a lot of people don't want to watch interviews or clips or anything but think you are missing out. Because that funny goofy Jake is coming through in his interviews. You know the one that people have been saying they miss. It's a shame to miss out.
Jake is talking about his film and his co-stars. He has not brought up his personal life or faux one with Reese. It has only been brought up by one reporter under the guise of paparazzi.
Anne Thompson was less than impressed with the American remake of "Brothers." As Anne writes, "David Benioff is a gifted writer ('The 25th Hour'). Jim Sheridan is a gifted director ('In America'). Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman are gifted actors. So what went wrong on the road to Relativity and Lionsgate’s American adaptation of Danish writer-director Susanne Bier’s extraordinary 2004 movie 'Brothers'?"

ReplyDeleteI'm not avoiding/boycotting interviews or anything, though.
ReplyDeleteI just have been downloading Christmas music all night so that's taken up my time.
It's that time isn't PG. I haven't listened to any yet but I know I will before the week's over. Christmas Parade is this weekend, and have the hanging of the greens at church to start off the advent season. Now will there be hanging of any lights at my house -- now that's the question.
ReplyDeleteNat celebrated the premiere of her new flick Brothers and looked absolutely yumma-do-me while doing it. But a little on the thin side, no? Guess that's Hollywood for ya.
ReplyDeleteLove the hair, love the makeup, love the dress. Her 'do looks classy, while the strapless mini, busty-bouquet number keeps her looking young. We forget the age of this mature Harvard alum sometimes, but we do know that that vibrant blue hue is impeccable.
One thing missing from the party was costar Jake Gyllenhaal.
Is that because he was home playing with his hair?
Nat totally threw Jakey under the bus (in a loving way) in People mag's Sexiest Man Alive issue.
Says Portman: "He knows home remedies for distressed hair."
That doesn't exactly make him sexy in our book. Hmm, is that why he lost out to Johnny Depp for the cover? But don't worry—Gyllenhaal is very rugged, too.
Portman continues to People: "[Jake] can build a cabinet from scratch. He plays guitar and has a great voice. Kids and dogs love him. He loves his mom and sister and girlfriend. He's perfect. Too bad he's ugly."
We'd stick with Nat over Jake, honestly. What about you?
Awful Truth
Dear Ted:
ReplyDeleteThere has been an uproar of extreme anger toward you recently in the comments section. The complaint against you is that you have been misleading and/or blatantly lying to your readers about a certain Blind Vice. This particular Vice has had three iterations to tickle our fancy. So, here is the question on my and many others' lips: What the ef? Seriously, are there instances where you are pressured by people such as lawyers to back way the heck off of the clues you've been giving and, in fact, print things that might lead your readers to draw different conclusions than the ones most have drawn, thus keeping their clients safely closeted? Or were the majority of us just barkin' up the wrong tree? Throw us a bone here, pretty please!
—Sam
Dear Pissed B.V.s:
Please, I do whatever I want (in certain legal limits). I'll try to steer you the wrong way sometimes when it's getting too easy...but come on, I'll never lie. Or mislead. Some people are upset about something I'm not even implying!
Dear Ted:
I always thought that you could tell a lot about a person by the company they keep, so imagine my surprise when I found out that nice-guy Jared Padalecki is friends with King of the Douche Bags, Chad Michael Murray! Pretty please, restore my faith in good people and tell me that Jared doesn't share any of Chad's nastier qualities? Hopefully yours,
—Radha
Dear Wrong Friends:
No, not Chad's, but some One Tree Hillers' for sure.
Dear Ted:
Is Toothy Tile Hugh Jackman? He obviously loves his kids and hangs out with his wife and looks happy. But that grin...There's something mischievous about him, and that intriguing grin seems to say, "We all know my secret—if not, think you can guess?" Not that it should matter; we'd love him no matter what! Personally, I love the nuances and lack of white-bread suburbia in anyone willing to risk showing that side of themselves!
—Seattle Suburban Soccer Mom
Dear Guessing Mom:
Someone already guessed that, and I already said nope! Sorry, hon, wrong vice for Hugh. Think less slick.
Second comment:
.... And LOL at the One Tree Hill mention! That's gotta be a veiled reference to the bearding going on with Sophia and Danneel.
Bitch Back
I have thrown in the towel and am in the process of taking down my Thanksgiving. I give up! I started packing up some of my Thanksgiving stuff tonight. We're going to Wichita early Thursday morning so I am going to be gone for a couple of days. Again.
ReplyDeleteI never get tired of hearing this TMBG song, it always cracks me up.
ReplyDeleteBoy, Ted sure is letting loose with the nasty remarks about Jake.
Wow, too many links to check out and not enough time. I'm very busy at work as we are closed Thursday and Friday and so I am just exhausted. I do want to see all the interviews and will come back to them later this week. It's been so long since we heard Jake speak, it is a treat, even if he's not very articulate.
ReplyDeleteAustin looks like he is having a good time doing the USO thing. Tired, but happy. A good experience for him I'm sure.
Not surprised about the shuffle at the CW. One Tree Hill is showing it's age. I doubt it will be back for another season. Speaking of one more season, rumor has it that Friday Night Lights will get only one more season after the one showing on Direct TV now. Not confirmed, but showing up on the web so likely true.
This is why I love this blog. I would have missed Ted's dig at OTH entirely but someone here caught it. Thanks for the eagle eye. I do think it was a poke at the closet/bearding.
ReplyDeleteSheridan has always had a knack for drawing exceptional performances from actors and he continues to do so in Brothers. If Gyllenhaal is perhaps too genteel for the part of Tommy, Maguire conveys Sam’s internal battles skilfully, and Portman has never been this unaffected as former cheerleader Grace.
ReplyDeleteEven more surprising are the performances of the two child actors Madison and Geare. Madison in particular is very natural as the older daughter and her face-off with Sam at her sister’s birthday party is one of the film’s best moments.
Sheridan’s only failing is in a weak and abrupt “Hollywood” ending. He offers hope and possible redemption, where Bier chose to take a more sceptical approach.
Screendaily
Though riddled with powerful performances — Portman is gracious as the grieving, confused widow. Maguire is enchanting as the traumatized war hero. Gyllenhaal is simply unforgettable as the misunderstood black sheep of the family — “Brothers” falters where it should be strongest. It’s called “Brothers” and supposedly deals with complicated sibling dynamics, especially because Sam and Tommy are consistently being compared by their father — but the story moves along more like the Sam and Grace show than the Tommy and Grace show, or the Sam and Tommy show.
ReplyDeleteNow “Brothers” surely straddles that delicate line between emotionally complex and emotionally draining, but it’s not an indie movie with a Death Cab for Cutie soundtrack. It’s jarring, and somehow, at 110 minutes, it ends right where the story gets especially interesting.
Regardless, “Brothers” is a must-see exploration of family, grief and war. Move over “Twilight: New Moon,” because Hollywood can obviously make quality films for adults and perhaps should make them more often.
Pitt News
I wouldn't look for Jake to volunteer information about Ice Maiden. But that person's question makes me wonder already if journalists are going to be asked to refrain from certain types of questions. Because it just kind of sounds like that person was trying to sneak her name in somehow but didn't get any juicy bits. If they're asking Ice Maiden in high profile magazines, then you better believe they're wanting to ask Jake. It's what all these shows/magazines are all about. They want the personal stuff.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Jake has refrained in the past from talking about his personal life. He's revealed quite a few personal details about his childhood and experiences.
It's just the beginning of him talking to the media so I'm not going to get real excited yet. There's plenty of road up ahead.
I don't know if that one quote by him up there about the paps would be anything extraordinary because it sounds like he's just talking about his profession until I see that he changed his wording. If he hadn't changed his wording, I wouldn't think anything about it. The fact that he did that, makes me look at it as a Freudian slip.
In the couple years I have been following Ted I have not seen him make remarks like he has in that first letter posted. I havent been reading Eonline at all lately so I dont know what the comments about Jake or Toothy have been. I know I have questioned Teds honesty on BT and wrote him a couple recent letters. My quess is that he is getting others. I asked Ted in a letter that he published a while back if a BT did exist and he answered in a def YES. Maybe Ted doesnt lie then and he is sensitive about it but he could have gotten poor info on BT. I still dont believe there is a BT. I also hope there isnt because this would make Jake and possibly Austin just horrible parents. If there is a BT they should both be very very ashamed of themselves.
ReplyDeleteDestiny OT. What do you think about the Adam Lambert contreversy. Seems like he has had complaints about his performance from the other night. Did you see it. I have to say some pretty daring stuff for TV:-)
ReplyDeleteOne thing I would like to say about Jakes reviews for Brothers. Seems like everyone agrees that jake is a very good actor. They also agree that he has not made some good choices in the parts he has taken on sonce BBM. I very strongly think that a movie like Damn Yankees and not PoP will make Jake a star again. PoP made him and MoMMa money. Now time to make better choices for not fame and money but for quality.
ReplyDeleteI wanna add to what I just said. I dont think the parts that Jake has taken on since BBM have been bad roles just roles that are not suited for him. Lets hope now that he is is rich and str8 he makes some better decisions. Sometimes actors take roles because they want to be something they are not. But than again I am not sure how many opportunities Jake has had.
