Luck(y) Guest?

A little Luck today and maybe for Austin? (Can we cross our fingers?)
With Jake taking a movie shooting in July, it is the biggest indicator that Austin has finished up with OTH and is moving on. So what's next?

Austin has talked about how proud he was of JFC, how much he like working on the show, and how much he liked working with Milch, both on Deadwood and JFC. We know that working with Milch on JFC had created the best performance Austin's done to date.

We've said it once and say it again.

Get back to Milch.

As luck would have it, Milch is back with HBO and working on a new series. Not the NY cop drama In the Ninth, but a show about the world of house racing called Luck.

Milch teamed up with longtime friend Michael Mann to shoot the pilot last year, which HBO was enthused about enough to order a season to premiere later this year. Their friendship "goes back to the days when Milch was running 'Hill Street Blues' and Mann was doing the same with 'Miami Vice.' "

Luck is look at horse racing -- the owners, gamblers, jockeys and industry players as only Milch can. "The pilot is about a bunch of intersecting lives in the world of horse racing," Milch told Daily Variety. "It's a subject which has engaged and some might say has compelled me for 50 years. I've joked that if I just can make $25 million on this show, I'll be even on research expenses. I find it as complicated and engaging a special world as any I've ever encountered, not only in what happens in the clubhouse and the grandstand, but also on the backside of the track, where the training is done and where they house the horses."

The lead character is Ace Bernstein, played by Dustin Hoffman , who Milch has described as "a guy versed in all the permutations of finance, elicit and otherwise. When he is released from jail for securities violations, he resumes his place at the race track, where he is a figure of long-standing repute."

Co-starring in the series is Nick Nolte, and the pilot, also featured Richard Kind, John Ortiz, Kevin Dunn, Jason Gedrick, Richie Coster, Ian Hart, Tom Payne, Kerry Condon and Gary Stevens.

The theme in Luck is the idea that a horse crossing the finish line before another can change a man's life and how all the show's characters even peripheral ones are "invested in that illusion: jockeys, owners, trainers, low-lifes, misfits, criminals," gamblers alike. The similarity to his series Deadwood is much the same, every man for himself, as long as every man agrees it's a prize worth winning.

Milch along with creating and writing the series, is an executive producer, along with former HBO programming topper Carolyn Strauss and Mann.

They have shot 6 episodes of the first season at the Santa Anita Race Track and around the LA area.

The world of horse racing and the track is nothing new for Milch "When I was a kid, my dad used to take me out to the race track and so many formative experiences have to do with associations like that. My relationship with the track was, I would say, at least fractionally as complicated as my relationship with my old man. So it kept me coming back." In addition he's owned close to 100 horses, racing his horses all over the world, and has one the Breeders' Cup race twice in 1992 and in 2001.

Milch does like to use people he has worked with before to cast in his projects.

Austin's a wee bit tall to play a jockey, but it would be nice to see him step outside the box and get a couple episodes as someone very unexpected.

If he does he'd have his own Milch/HBO trifecta.

  1. Dammit Special..... now its time for me to get out my JFC DVD collection and start doing the episodes and special features once again !

I just LOVE Austin in JFC, along with the rest of that motley crew, and the thought of him working with Milch again is very engaging.

They just began filming the second season of the Stephen King written, HBO series, "Haven" here in Nova Scotia, so i'm hoping to get to Lunenburg and catch either Emily Rose or Eric Balfour as they film some scenes if I'm lucky.

  2. Suri Cruise's eyes might be saying "Isn't this special?", but her finger over her mouth is loudly screaming, "How. Tragic." From Jim Toth looking like a shaved monkey getting his daily protein by nibbling the gnats out of Reese Witherspoon's hair to Hello! Magazine erasing the Barbie from her dress, Suri is not amused. If People insisted on pushing Suri into the corner, they could've at least used a picture of Reese that didn't make her look like the love child of Skipper and Mr. Potato Head getting assaulted by a Monchichi. No, she looks pretty. I'm just every flavor of bitter, because Jake Gyllenhaal should be the one with a veil on his head on the cover of People. And Reese knows it! That Ore-Ida chin of hers has got a dollop of smugness directed at JAKE! Something tells me Jake will be shouting a raw rendition of Whitney Houston's "It's Not Right, But It's Okay" at this cover today.

  3. So Reese got her cover. I think she looks pretty, but had to lol at Toth's face not getting shown on the cover.

I would love to see Austin do a Milch show, or any HBO show, but for a lot of reasons I sadly think chances of that happening are pretty slim.

    What are those reasons, Destiny?

  6. I agree with Destiny on Reese's cover on PEOPLE Magazine. Not an auspicious photograph considering she seems far more involved with the photographer and her photo being taken than with her new husband. Good luck!

Today I met Jake Gyllenhaal. He is a very nice person. Can´t wait to see "Source Code". - Miguel_GaCkT

  8. Here's hoping SC does better in Europe.

What reasons? One is that it sounds like they're well into shooting the new Milch series, another is that I wonder if people would have a harder time accepting Austin as a character actor after doing OTH.

  9. I think from the response from HBO Luck will be getting more than one season. They having adding more people to the cast.

I wouldn't rule out Milch asking Austin to come back for a couple of episodes in something totally out of character from anything else he's done. Something that could shake off the Crazy Tree.

Why can I picture him as a lowlife sleazeball everyone would hate, a wacked out bookie, or even a grifter.

  10. Tend to agree with you Special, if anything Milch does not think in conventional terms... ever! You just have to listen to him on his direction of JFC from the DVD. Anything is possible for this man, the more angular/offbeat the better.

  11. Seaweed, Austin trusts Milch which I think is one reason Milch gets a great performance out of Austin. He doesn't have to worry he can just go and be the character.

I think if Milch told Austin you're going to play a a one eyed bookie with OCD who keeps a horseshoe stuffed in his underwear for luck, Austin would say let's go and dive right in.

  12. Milch's new show sounds interesting. It does not sound like we'd see any new actors in Season 1 if its already shot. Austin looked good on a horse in Deadwood though.

Off topic, but I viewed an interview with Henry Cavill on ONTD. Very handsome man and he comes off as extremely classy. Not just because of this accent, but his demeanor and graciousness. I've no clue if the rumors about he and Jake have even a grain of truth, but I can see why Jake or anyone would be attracted to him.

I'm hoping for good international box office too. I guess part of my disappointment is that I thought if ever Jake was going to hit one out of the park, Source Code would be it.

  13. Oh please stop making all this fuss about Jake and the box office and how much he needs a huge box office success and how much his career needs it and all that crap! Duncan Jones is at what the second movie of his life? The critics have been pretty good with this movie and so are the viewers. Beside ever since you started making all the fuss about Jake's career being down spiraling, he got an Oscar nomination! I am starting to think that deep inside you wish Jake failed, seeing how livid you are about his presumed bearding and all. Loosen up and get a life. Karma is a bi!ch.

  16. We know he was nominated for an Oscar for BBM.

    Trolly was talking about recently:

  17. I am starting to think that deep inside you wish Jake failed,

That would be a big false. Why don't you take the time to read prior past comments on here lately.

seeing how livid you are about his presumed bearding and all.

    Not livid without reason.

Oh please stop making all this fuss about Jake and the box office and how much he needs a huge box office success and how much his career needs it and all that crap!

    No.

Duncan Jones is at what the second movie of his life?

I could care less about Duncan Jones. This isn't Oh My Godot - A Duncan & Austin Community.

The critics have been pretty good with this movie and so are the viewers.

Bottom line is that you do need to be capable of selling tickets IF you want to be a star headliner, carrying the movie; i.e. being the big draw. Bottom line is always money.

This comment almost sounds like it could have come from Mrs. Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal.

LOL! just kidding, I'm just kidding. lol.

  18. The mystery of why someone who would tweet they saw Austin at the ACM's in Vegas

    Just Jared Sophia in Vegas

Looks like either they thought Austin was there because Sophia was there, or they wanted people to think he was there because she was.

And is this part of her 7 day road trip? Was Patches in the casino playing poker? Oh how cliche.

    ReplyDelete
  19. lol. cracked myself up on that one.

Okay, gotta quit fooling around & get ready for work.

Well hey, movies can have rebounds, right? Word of mouth can help. I hope for that.

And what in the hey? Austin does a Prairie Dog Tweet, he pops up out of his boat and then he's gone.

Big profession of a photo and nothin'. Nuttin' Honey.

Do I hear the waves of the waters hitting the shore and the sounds of a big Reunion Smackerooooo? With......Soap?!! lol. **punches timecard**.

    Okay, off, I'm off!

  20. 'Morning, Specialllll!!!!!!!

I had seen where Soap professed to stopping in Vegas on her big 7 DAY roadtrip.

This is what inquiring minds want to know. I know mine demands to know.

Where did her pit bull dog Patches go while she was sightseeing in Vegas, tossing back a couple of waters?

    Please.

  21. Retread of Jake's story about turning down the Mighty Ducks and how his parents wanted to he and Maggie to have more than just being child stars.

Again it is his last quote that it appears he is speaking about more than just Mom Dad and Mags & family.

"My family, as a result, is the most important thing to me. Tomorrow, if Hollywood stopped calling, I'd still have my family."

    Monsters & Critics

But why are they rerunning stories from 2009?

  22. Despite his ex Reese Witherspoon putting a ring on it last weekend, Jake Gyllenhaal isn't crying into an order of cheese fries. He's strong.

Gyllenhaal was spotted at trendy Locande Verde restaurant in Tribeca this weekend having brunch with a mystery blonde who, according to our fellow-munching spy, "looked like a cross between Rachel McAdams and Taylor Swift." Jake sure does love those blondes! Or, at least, pretends to...

"Jake was in a dark-blue pullover and jeans, and the girl was wearing a ruffled blouse and jeans," adds our source. "It was a casual meeting in the back corner booth. They were laughing and enjoying each other's company."

We saw the accompanying cell-phone pic, which was really too grainy to publish. But one thing was crystal clear about Jake's mood: That guy gives animated private-booth face. Dude was workin' it for the blondie babe, for sure.

  23. A comment on AT pointed out that Jake is sitting at a tile table. Good catch. Ted is a master of subtle hints.

HW is all about profit, like any business. The director and actors are in it for art, but funding depends on results. There is no point pretending that Box office does not matter.

  24. I saw this sighting on someone's FB over the weekend, no one contacted Ted about it, he took it from the FB post.

Dead giveaway: the woman said the blonde looked like Swift, Ted added McAdams to make it look diff. and he likes to ship Jake and McAdams.

Same restauraunt too. The woman didn't have a pic and neither does Ted.
