Out Spotlight

Passing away a week ago, today's Out Spotlight is an actor who is probably best known for his work with Alfred Hitchcock. Today's Out Spotlight is actor Farley Granger.

Farley Earle Granger was born in San Jose, California, the son of Eva and Farley Earle Granger on July 1, 1925
His father owned car dealership, giving his family a good life. Following the stock market crash in 1929, the Grangers were forced to their home in San Jose and their beach home along with most of their personal belongings, moving into an apartment above the dealership for two years. Their financial collapse and fall from their social sent Granger's parents to drink heavily. Eventually everything they owned was sold to settle their debts, with his father using the last car on his lot to move the family to Los Angeles in the middle of the night settling into a small apartment in a seedy part of Hollywood.

Granger's father found work as a clerk in the North Hollywood branch of the California Department of Unemployment, and soon put a small down payment on a house in Studio City, where their neighbor was actor/dancer Donald O'Connor.

Hoping Granger might become a tap dancer, his mother enrolled him at Ethel Meglin's, the dance and drama instruction studio where Judy Garland and Shirley Temple had gotten their starts. His parent's drinking increased as they work various jobs to try and make a living. Soon their fighting did too.

His father was advised by Harry Langdon to take Granger to a small local theater for open auditions for The Wookie, a British play about Londoners struggling to survive during World War II. Granger got the part, actually multiple parts in the play. Opening night, a casting agent spotted him and brought Granger to the attention of studio boss Samuel Goldwyn. The following morning Gersh contacted Granger's parents and asked them to bring him to his office that afternoon. In 1943, while he was still a student at North Hollywood High School, he signed to a seven-year contract with MGM for a $100 a week.

His first role was Damian, a teenage Russian boy in the film The North Star. Upon completion of his second movie, The Purple Heart, his career was halted for US Navy service during World War II.

"I was chronically seasick." and the remainder of his military career was spent onshore, where he first was assigned to an enlisted men's club situated at the end of Waikiki Beach and then to a unit commanded by classical actor Maurice Evans, where he had the opportunity to meet and mingle with visiting entertainers like Bob Hope, Betty Grable, Hedy Lamarr and Gertrude Lawrence.

While stationed in Honolulu he had his first sexual experiences, one with a hostess at a private club and the other with a handsome Navy officer visiting the same venue, both on the same night. He discovered he was attracted to both men and women equally.

"I finally came to the conclusion that for me, everything I had done that night was as natural and as good as it felt . . . I never have felt the need to belong to any exclusive, self-defining, or special group . . . I was never ashamed, and I never felt the need to explain or apologize for my relationships to anyone . . . I have loved men. I have loved women."

When he finished his stint in the Navy, he returned to Hollywood and the Goldwyn publicity machine.

Granger was cast in the film noir Thieves Like Us. The film was nearing completion in October 1947 when Howard Hughes acquired RKO Radio Pictures, who shelved it for two years before releasing it under the title They Live by Night in a single theater in London. Enthusiastic reviews led RKO to finally release the film in the States in late 1949. During the two years it had remained in limbo, it had been screened numerous times in private screening rooms, and one of the people who saw it during this period was Alfred Hitchcock, who was preparing for the movie, Rope.

Granger was in New York when he was called back to Hollywood and discuss Rope with Hitchcock. The night before their initial meeting, Granger coincidentally met Arthur Laurents, who had written the film's screenplay, which was based on the play Rope's End, a fictionalized account of the Leopold and Loeb murder case. It wasn't until he began reading the script that he connected its author with the man he had met the previous night. Granger and Laurents met again, and Laurents invited the actor to spend the night. He declined, but when the offer was extended again several days later, he accepted. It proved to be the start of a romantic relationship that lasted about a year and a frequently tempestuous friendship that extended for decades beyond their breakup.

Filmed in 10-minute takes,Rope, resulting in an elegantly artificial movie, with the actors even more puppet-like than was usual with Hitchcock. Granger and John Dall were cast as gay students who murder a friend to display a Nietzschean concept of supremacy. Granger played the highly strung Phillip a pianist, who cracks under the probing of their tutor (Jimmy Stewart). The public were less than enthusiastic. The director Jean Renoir scathingly dismissed the film, adding that it was "a film about homosexuals in which they don't even show the boys kissing".

In the films that followed, he appeared as a petty thief who gets in over his head with the mob in Side Street; a young man who kills a priest with a crucifix in Edge of Doom; and an adopted orphan in Our Very Own. Both were unpleasant working experiences, and the Granger refused to allow the producer to loan him to Universal Pictures for an inferior magic carpet saga. He was placed on suspension.

He decided to accompany Ethyl Chaplin, who had separated from her husband, and her daughter on a trip to Paris. At the last moment they were joined by Laurents, who remained behind when the group departed for London to see the opening of the New York City Ballet, which had been choreographed by Jerome Robbins. They had a brief affair until the actor was summoned to return to New York to help publicize Our Very Own and Edge of Doom, both of which received dreadful reviews. Goldwyn canceled the nationwide openings of the latter, hoping to salvage it by adding wraparound scenes that would change the focus of the film, and Granger refused to promote it any further. Once again he was placed on suspension. As he departed for Europe this time with Laurents, he contacted about an another film by Hitchcock.

The project was Strangers on a Train, in which Granger was cast as amateur tennis player and aspiring politician Guy Haines. He is introduced to psychopathic Bruno Anthony, portrayed by Robert Walker, who suggests they swap murders, with Bruno killing Guy's wife and Guy disposing of Bruno's father. As with Rope, there was a homosexual subtext to the two men's relationship, although it was toned down the original novel. It proved to be a box office hit, the first major success of his career, and his "happiest filmmaking experience.

After appearing opposite Danny Kaye in Hans Christian Anderson in 1952, he bought out his Goldwyn contract and traveled to Europe in 1954 where he starred in Luchino Visconti's Senso. After his detour through Italy, he starred in two 1955 movies: The Naked Street with Anthony Quinn and The Girl on the Red Velvet Swing with Joan Collins and Ray Milland.

Although he returned to Hollywood at the height of his stardom, he walked away from it - to really learn his craft. He spent the rest of his career in a mix of movies, television and stage work. He relocated to New York, where he appeared in several plays, including The Heiress, Advise and Consent and The King and I. He spent two years with the National Repertory Theatre, starring in such plays as The Crucible, The Seagull, She Stoops to Conquer and Hedda Gabler. During those days of live television, he performed on a number of leading programs, including Playhouse 90, The U.S. Street Hour, Studio One, Climax and Kraft Theater.

In the 70's Granger went on to guest star on such show Ironside, Hondo, Wagon Train, Get Smart, Hawaii Five-O and Medical Center, among others. He returned to Europe to appear in several films: The Man Called Noon, They Call Me Trinity and The Serpent.

In 1980, he returned to Broadway to stage in a production of Deathtrap.

He also appeared in the daytime soaps As the World Turns in 1986-87 and The Edge of Night in 1980. During the '80s and '90s, he made frequent guest appearances on Tales From the Dark Side, The Love Boat, Murder, She Wrote and Monsters.

In 1995 he contributed to the documentary The Celluloid Closet (1995), an examination of homosexuality in Hollywood movies.

His last film appearance was in the art world satire The Next Big Thing in 2001.

Granger managed to keep his bisexuality a secret during his Hollywood career, until 2007, he published a memoir of his life called Include Me Out co-written with his long-term partner, producer Robert Calhoun. documented his affairs with Shelley Winters, Ava Gardner and Patricia Neal as well as playwright Arthur Laurents and fling with Leonard Bernstein.

"There were cliques for gays, like the one that met at (director) George Cukor's house," he recalled. "I was never invited, and I don't think I would have gone if I had been. I was fortunate to join the musical crowd." He became friends with Judy Garland, actress Betty Garrett, composers Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and others who met Sundays at Gene Kelly's house for competitive sports in the backyard and The Game (charades) indoors.
...
Granger feels lucky to have been part of Hollywood's Golden Age. He writes about what may have been the quintessential Hollywood party. Gary Cooper called to invite Granger to a party for Clark Gable. Granger quickly accepted. And would he escort Barbara Stanwyck, newly divorced from Robert Taylor? Of course.

The Cooper estate overflowed with the town's elite: Greer Garson, Ronald Colman, Jimmy Stewart, David Niven, Ray Milland, James Mason, Deborah Kerr, Myrna Loy and many others.

"Clark Gable arrived late, and it was an entrance to remember," Granger writes. "He stopped for a moment at the top of the stairs that led down into the garden. He was alone, tanned, and wearing a white suit. He radiated charisma. He really was The King."

His relationship with actress Shelley Winters was the most documented. "My lifelong romance with Shelley was very much a love affair. It evolved into a very complex relationship, and we were close until the day she died."

Asked by New York Magazine when the book came out, while he didn't like to call himself gay or even bisexual. He responded, We're not going to emerge as untarnished until we get rid of labels. Until we have the perception that sex is only part of what makes up a human, the enemy will always be able to say, "He's just a faggot."

Granger was with his longtime partner Robert Calhoun, a soap opera producer, for over 40 years until Calhoun's death in 2008.

Saying he had become bored with the process of film-making and retired, devoting himself to travel and his greatest love, the theater, now as a spectator.

Farley Granger passed away last Sunday March 27th at the age of 85.

  2. Is there a Gillette/Schick work stoppage going on in this nation?

Have the men turned into vampires, thus no longer able to look into mirrors?

Is Hollywood doing a big epic remake of Gunsmoke and there's going to be a big tryout for the role of Festus?

Is that what these guys are aiming for? Are they Festus wannabe's?

  4. Here we go, here's Jake.

    Festus.

Actually, yeah I do. Even in the winter. Can't stand to go a day without.

So bite me - here ya go, right on the 4-bladed calf.

Man oh man, Jack, you must have keyboard imprints on your hiney, you're so fixed on that thing waiting for someone to say something you can snark at.

    That was weak, too, sir.

Interesting read of an Outspotlight, Special. Intriguing. And boy, he was good looking, too, wasn't he?

  10. Wow. I just checked out US Stinkley and the headline right behind the Charlie Sheen debacle is "HOP Beats Jake Gyllenhaal Film at Weekend Box Office".

Jake Gyllenhaal's cute . . . but apparently not nearly as irresistible as a talking bunny.

The weekend's clear box office winner was Hop, the Easter-themed animated flick starring James Marsden and featuring Russell Brand as the voice of the Easter Bunny's son, "E.B.." The family-friendly film exceeded industry expectations and earned an impressive $38 million in its debut weekend -- the biggest U.S. opening so far of 2011.

Source Code, the mind-bending thriller starring Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan, wasn't even a close second, garnering $15 million in total box office receipts.

Just behind that was freaky, low-budget horror flick Insidious starring Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson, nabbing $13.5 million for its first weekend out.

You guys know how extremely little I know about movies but even I know this isn't good.

Jake gets beat by James Marsden? And a horror flick is only $2 mil. behind in 3rd place? People would rather go see slash 'em ups than a movie with a plot and a well known actor that is getting good reviews?

And Source Code was rated PG-13. There's just no reason for this. There was nothing else going on.

The question has to be asked why? You had all the right ingredients, correct? New up & coming director. Well known Oscar-nominated actor. Intriguing plot (I guess, to most people anyway, lol).

Jake promoted the hell out of that movie; he busted his ass.

  13. $15 isn't horrible but when you compare it to $38 mil for an animated rabbit and then $2 mil less for a low-budget horror movie (who is Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson, anyways?), it's not good.

And two things: One, it breaks my heart when Jake knocks himself out promoting his movies and the people don't flock to see it.

But two, maybe Jake's People need to go back to the locker room, get out the chalk & eraser, and re-think what they've been doing.

And they cannot blame Austin. Austin was at sea. In a boat.

So a lot of good that did, PR, making sure the two guys were nowhere near each other.

    ReplyDelete
  14. And they cannot blame Austin. Austin was at sea. In a boat.

Um OK. So if Austin was with Jake, then the movie would have pulled in extra $10 mill?? LOL!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Maybe word of mouth can give it a resurgence.

  16. So if Austin was with Jake, then the movie would have pulled in extra $10 mill?? LOL!!

No, that's not what I'm saying.

But it would not have made one noodle of a difference were Austin to be on US soil while Jake was promoting the movie and while it premiered on Friday.

This once a year of letting Jake & Austin out into the Public Off-Leash area is a necessity only in the minds of Jake's People.

It's been of total irrelevance to anything.

  17. I'm glad to see this Spotlight Special, and thanks to whoever suggested it--I meant to suggest it to you after reading his obituary but it slipped my mind. Interesting to read about him in more detail than I saw in the papers.

I don't get why SC didn't do better, or why people are beating up Jake for this one, he's good in it. Someone mentioned the Lincoln Lawyer, that's another one that got good reviews but it hasn't done well, but I haven't seen any headlines crowing about McBongo's lack of box office pull. And HOP got mediocre reviews, and has a horrendous rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Agree that Jake's being on SNL has nothing to do with who was hosting, and everything to do with SC opening.

  18. What an interesting life Farley lived. And quite a variety of lovers. A lucky man.

I'm surprised by Source Code's mediocre results, especially since Insidious did so well with almost no publicity. Insidious seems to have some word of mouth going for it making matters worse. It's been said many times that Jake can't pull a straight male audience and we know he dumped the gay males. The night I saw it there were no more than 4 men in the audience and 2 of them were very obviously husbands taken to the show. I know this because one was mine, and the other couple happened to sit right next to us, even though the theater was almost empty. I could not help but hear their pre-movie conversation. The other 2 men were together, but too far away from us to hear their conversation, so no clue if they were straight or gay. Regardless, this has to be a wake up call to his PR. Whatever they have been doing is not working and they cant blame it on the script, direction, or miscasting this time around. Time to regroup.

  19. I love Farley Granger. Surprised Rope was so poorly received by critics at the time- I watch it once a year! Strangers on a Train - so good. Farley and Monty Clift- my favorites. Thanks

  20. In second, Source Code generated an estimated $15.1 million on close to 3,400 screens at 2,961 locations. That was ho-hum compared to the starts for its fellow sci-fi thrillers currently in theaters, Limitless and The Adjustment Bureau, and it was even worse relative to more thematically-similar thrillers like Deja Vu, Vantage Point and Unstoppable. Source Code also prompted comparisons to titles like Groundhog Day, Speed and television's Quantum Leap, but the premise became more convoluted the more the marketing tried to explain it, getting in the way of the audience getting into the suspense and characters. Distributor Summit Entertainment's exit polling indicated that 54 percent of the audience was male (whereas Adjustment Bureau and Limitless skewed female) and 64 percent was aged 30 years and older.

  23. Still steaming over Reba McEntire & Blake Shelton's jab at Jake at last night's ACM Awards.

I will use my own 3 available forums to voice it, too.

Their "joke" just set LGBT non-discriminatory progress back 30 years.

I'm very disappointed in Reba McEntyre who I always respected as someone who had her stuff together. I don't listen to her music but she certainly seemed like a level-headed, nice person.

And so they stick by ol' Tay because she's one of the Nashville favorites and yeah, Jake certainly paid for dipping his bearding toe into the Nashville waters but that still didn't call for the Brokeback "joke".

What a crock. Tay who herself greedily participated in the bearding and is no better.

Don't drag Brokeback into it. Brokeback has nothing at all to do with it.

  26. Country Stars Take Aim At Gyllenhaal For 'Dumping' Swift

Academy of Country Music Awards hosts Reba Mcentire and Blake Shelton took aim at movie star Jake Gyllenhaal for dumping sweetheart Taylor Swift, suggesting the actor might be gay.

MCEntire spoke out during the prizegiving in Las Vegas on Sunday (03Apr11) to question the hunk's reasons for ending the brief romance at Christmas (10) - and singer Shelton offered an idea.

The flame-haired star quizzed, "She's (Swift) beautiful, she's talented, she's sweet. What in the world was Jake Gyllenhaal thinking anyway?"

Shelton quipped, "Wait a minute, he was in Brokeback Mountain!"

Gyllenhaal played a gay cowboy opposite Heath Ledger in the acclaimed movie.

  27. ^^I wish they'd stop with the tired BBM lines. :(

Beautiful Spotlight - Farley Granger is a really good-looking man.

Remember that Source Code did come in second at the box office - and movies for children and horror flicks always do well, and are tough to beat. Interesting demos about Limitless and Adjustment Bureau.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Many have felt that in the past few years, Jake's people have kept Jake from anything that had even hint of being thought of as gay. If that was so, then SNL could be seen as a shift change. It wasn't just the host, but also some of the skits. (Elton as a gay cowboy).

The whole CMA thing, Reba and Shelton should be ashamed for pulling this kind of stuff. They are adults, not the junior high fanbase of Swift's.

You're right Music Lover, kids movies are tough to beat. You can see the trend in the box office over and over again, and how they are churning out more and more kids and animated and horror movies because they are sure things for the studios.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Who was the host of SNL this weekend? I think Jake's appearance was stictly PR for Source code.

I see no change in Jake's PR plans for the future. I think he is in the closet to stay. Hope I am wrong

    ReplyDelete
  30. Then I guess the question becomes just what exactly genre of movie does Jake need to do to sell tickets?

Seems like he's tried everything lately.

He's done drama (Rendition). Young people's (Prince of Persia)
    Comedy/Romance (LAOD)
    Action (Source Code)

    So what's left? Animation, then?

    ReplyDelete
  31. lol, besides the fact that it needs to be a good script, no matter what it is. I guess that's presumed, though.

  33. What's left PG is a "buddy" film, which it sounds like the new one he is doing. Hopefully they will get a co-star that will draw in people.

I just read that HoP had a huge marketing push, and had over 90 other companies on board, like McDonalds and Walmart. With that kind of push and people looking for family entertainment, it's not hard to see why Hop did so well. Insidious probably got the younger date night crowds.

I didn't think films like the Adjustment Bureau and Unstoppable had done that well, but I guess it is all relative, and that $20 million is some magical line that Jake can't seem to cross.

I saw SC at a special screening, and for that the audience was a real mix of people, I'd say half men, all ages, mostly straight.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Tom, Elton John hosted SNL. And still have to disagree with you Special, if Jake really wanted to show he was being gay friendly again, he could have participated in a skit with Elton John, not just done a bit on the news. And there was nothing remotely gay about the skit he did do.

It has become standard for stars with a new movie out to pop by SNL.

Plus, if he's really changed his tune, you sure wouldn't know it from the way he talks about BBM in the Maxim interview he did.

The only thing revolutionary about SNL this week was Elton John doing an opening monologue about how he became a father.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Destiny you yourself had said in the past that Jake's people had him not let even attend events that could be seen as gay, so them having him go on SNL with Elton, even in a cameo on Weekend Update is something that would not have been done, if they were still doing what you said they were doing.

I have yet to read the entire Maxim interview, and as learned from before with excerpts from interviews of Jake's, is to read the whole article first.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Special, I think we're just going to have to disagree about this one. :-D

For me there was absolutely nothing gay about Jake going on SNL in the middle of promoting SC. I am sure the marketers reached out to SNL like they did many other shows to get him on during opening week.

Now if Jake had just dropped by on a random week and say, sang a duet with Elton John, then I'd say things are changing.

Believe me, I'd like to see Jake change. But at this point the only change I've seen is not bearding, although pr is still trying to make sure his name gets associated with every woman he has ever dated. And for me, the jury is still out as to whether he's changed his bearding ways, or just hasn't found a new one.

  37. One other thing I read about Hop, apparently a lot of teenaged girls turned out because of Russell Brand.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Awww, that's sweet.

I went to see Source Code at a matinee also and there was a big, almost diorama cardboard cutout of the bunnies and characters from HOP. The little ones were going crazy climbing in and around it, and getting their photos taken.

The theater was packed, and it seemed a fairly mixed crowd - but if I had to guess, I'd say there were quite a few young guys.

Russell Brand - I never was much of a fan until I saw an on-line art parody of his wedding to Katy Perry in India - they had him looking like Krishna all in blue (and Katy was the six-armed goddess!). I fell in love with it, and now I kinda am a fan of Russell. Looking forward to Arthur! :)

  39. They promoted the hell out of Hop, especially on NBC -which is part of Universal. (Hop's Studio) Jake did work hard promoting Source Code, and you could tell how excited he is about Source Code. But Hop was Goliath to Source Code's David.

I still do not understand why Jake does not do NBC's Today Show or Jay Leno anymore. He hasn't been on Leno since Jan 2006, and The Today Show since Fall of 2007, yet he does Fallon and SNL on NBC. I wonder if there is some issue with Leno and Today Show's bookers with Jake's people, or that there are conditions regarding the interview that both sides can not find compromise about.

What should Jake do career wise? Maybe return to an indie with a strong character driven story. Something that is a hybrid of comedy and drama.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Got to make a remark about what was said on the CMA's. First of all Reese knew Jake was gay from the beginning. I am not sure Talyor knew. He used Talyor for some PR and for some reason he backed out. Maybe Talyor did have a crush on him. I think the reason he went to Nashville for that lunch with Talyor was to cool the waters a bit with her. I am not happy that BBM was included in the remarks made at CMA but the fact is you sow what you reap.

  42. Sorry Swift is not the naive and innocent she knew what she was geting into, in fact all the stories about them as a couple were coming from her camp. Look at the slant of the stories. And wasn't her first time doing the beard thing, look who else she has hooked up with who has similar chatter like Jake. Joe Jonas and Taylor Lautner. Why is it different this time and she is so spurned? But she didn't do the dumping he did, and that's not what she planned on.

  44. Same here Tom, a real crowd pleaser!

I'm going to give Source Code a couple of extra weeks to see how it does, and will go and see it when I go to the city later this week.

Special, this weeks OutSpotlight was well worth the read, very interesting and engaging. Cudo's to your suggestive collarborator.

  45. My jury is still way out on Jake.

I'm done trying to study & anticipate/predict what in the heck he & his camp are doing.

Who would have ever thought he'd beard with Swift? What a huge mistake that was. Huge.

He alienated a lot of fans after that - that debaucle was the last straw for so many.

I too think SNL was about promoting his movie. His People pulled out as many stops as they could, sending him here, there & everywhere to promote that movie.

I think Tom is definitely right in that you do reap what you sow. And I think Jake is reaping big time for the past 3 years of lying to his fans.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Now that being said, I don't want this to sound like all I'm doing is slamming the guy. I don't doubt he had a very valid reason for finding a cover for the birth of his first 3 kids - Reese was supposed to cover all 3 of them, I believe but she reneged on the deal and left him high & dry.

But it should have stopped there. The online floaters with Lucas, McAdams, etc. - those weren't so bad. But Swift? That thing, for something so short, is still biting him in the butt.

I don't get it. He seems to be a popular guy in Hollywood. He's got all kinds of people covering his back and helping to cover up his secret life.

So what is it about Jake that the American public don't seem to be buying and won't go see his movies that he is headlining?

  50. I think maybe you answered your own question Special--Leno and the Today Show wanted to promote the Universal movie opening the same weekend.

I think one of the problems is that the promo was mostly centered on "old" school media like late-night talk shows. I also don't think you can really get any idea of SC from the standard trailer. Some of the other things they've done, like the appearance at Apple, doesn't reach many people.

That tweet about Austin just goes to show how often people are wrong about who they think they see; I think that happens a lot with Jake.
