Jake stopped by to see old friend Jon Stewart on Monday night to talk about the movie and much more.
Jake was in his element talking to Jon who's first question, was how many times did Jake as Lou Bloom actually blink in Nightcrawler as only Jon can. And Jake countered with the interesting effects of kale. And who really was his inspiration for Lou.
Jake was on - quick, happy, charming and witty as wever.
Giggles and dimples... are always always welcome Jake.
Jake's going to be on Morning Joe this morning.
ReplyDeleteI expect great performance by other actors I know have great acting chops (Deniro, Bale, etc). I don't know or care anything about their personal lives is the point.
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't apply to me, I know that much. Of course, Robert DeNiro is in a class along with others that Jake has not reached yet no matter how many tweets his people plant on Twitter telling everyone that his acting is like DeNiro's. You wouldn't believe how many tweets there were in the weeks leading up to and still out there which were comparing Jake to DeNiro and Nightcrawler as his Taxi Driver.
But my point is that personal lives do come along with the occupation of professional actor. That's just the way it is - and public exposure/scrutiny comes with that territory. And they especially come with the territory when the said actor uses rag magazines, Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter to push their PR generated fauxmances into the public's face.
Sorry, but you're going to live and die by the sword by which you swung. It's not a one-way road. And celebrities like Beyonce who faked a pregnancy to the public, Mel Gibson who hid very strong bigotries, and Chris Brown who bashed his girlfriend's head into the car dashboard?
I can't just put those things out of my head when I hear their music or see an advertisement on TV. I don't want to buy a song from a man who physically beats on his girlfriends. It's my prerogative. And unfortunately now, when I see Jake, all I see is someone who really doesn't care for his fans until it's time to sell them his movies and also someone who OTT hides his secret life by bearding and telling any journalist with a voice recorder or pen & steno pad that he isn't a father yet, when he knows and we know he darned well is.
Can't seem to get that out of my head so I'm afraid I'm not so easily clouded.
Obviously you have not seen the movie, otherwise you would get immediately the comparison with De Niro in Taxi Driver, and even more with Rupert Pupkin in The King of Comedy,Jake is compared with De Niro by critics and people because his performance is that great

A mesmerizing cipher, Lou is a spiritual descendant of Robert De Niro's Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, and of the withholding protagonists in the existential French crime films of Robert Bresson and Jean-Pierre Melville

Nightcrawler serves as a phenomenal showcase for Gyllenhaal, who is never less than riveting . A full package of tics, tension and breathless patter, this self-taught entrepreneur stops at nothing, evoking a Taxi Driver for the TMZ age.

Alas, I feel that most of the hype surrounding Jake's movies is exactly that. Critics these days don't have a lot of integrity. They work for corporations and are afraid for their jobs. A local media person described Jake's performance in NC recently as "hokie" and didn't rate it very high at all. He said the movie was corny and fake. Overly, melodramatic, and insincerely emotional. De Niro's performance in Taxi Driver was riveting and nuanced. There's a huge difference.
ReplyDeleteA friend who saw the film described Jake's performance as one note. Ouch! He was creepy from the beginning to the end. Trying to out creep himself in every scene. Why? C'mon. Because he was creepy. Duh!

Oh Wow! What a film Nightcrawler is. Definite Top 10 of the year, if Jake Gyllenhaal doesn’t get an Oscar nod it will be serious injustice.

^^^ look at that. That's just in the past 3 1/2-4 hours. Take those and double them during the week prior to and including the weekend of Nightcrawler's release.
I know what I'm seeing. It's doesn't take being a rocket scientist.
