Little Miracles

Austin making new friends

Meet all my new friends in Tel Aviv. Great kids. Bialik Rogozin. Magical school. - AUS10

The school was the focus of an Academy Award winning documentary, Strangers No More.

Here's about the movie from the director:

"It’s hard to film a miracle. Telling the story of the remarkable Bialik-Rogozin School in Tel Aviv -- an extraordinary place where one can experience a sense of humanity so rich and pervasive it often feels impossible -- seemed a tremendous responsibility. Among the 750 refugees and immigrants from forty-eight countries and every known religion, we chose to follow three children who fled their homelands in Darfur, South Africa, and Eritrea. Over the course of fifteen months, we portrayed their struggles to forget the past and rebuild their lives in this rarest of communities, where truly no one is a stranger. "Link

And who presented the Oscar to them for the documentary? Jake and Amy Adams.

One more pic of Austin goofing around with the kids as they get ready to take pictures.

And it sounds like he has found the Israeli equivalent of his beloved taco trucks.Just ate the most epic falafel of my life in sderot, Israel with . - Justingchatwin

Falafel is the unofficial food of Israel and the ultimate street food, there are places to grab falafel on almost everywhere. And what sets one a part from the other? It the combination of falafel themselves, the bread, the condiments, salads and relishes. And in Israel it isn't just some lettuce tomato and cucumber with some tahini sauce but "towers of vegetables, pickles, salads and relishes" added that will make you forget you are going healthy and vegetarian. (Jake should be happy with that.)

And for Two Wheel Tuesday -

Two Wheel Trips in Israel. (wonder if Austin will get a chance to ride while there)

Forget Santa Claus - Here Comes Jake Gyllenhaal. From Bi-Rite's twitter feed: "Hold the phone, @jakegyllenhal just came in to the Market! Unfortunately, he only bought waters :-( Wonder what he's in town for??"

It's probably for Alice Waters-related things. More JG sightings are welcome in the comments. [EaterWire, Twitter]

  5. This is from Tablehopper (based in SF) and looked like Jake found a way to have a burger and be healthy about it. (Hamburger and brussel sprouts - where's the fun in that? You know Austin would have gone for the fries.)

    A Very Thirsty Jake

According to this tweet from Bi-Rite Market, ~Jake Gyllenhaal~ dashed into the market this morning: “Hold the phone, @jakegyllenhal just came in to the Market! Unfortunately, he only bought waters :-( Wonder what he’s in town for??”

A follow-up tweet about the sighting that was sent to Eater’s twitter account mentions seeing Jakey at nopa on Sunday night. After confirming with the nopa crew, I learned he sat at the communal table! I know, this is one of those moments when you’d really loooove communal seating. He was reportedly very kind to the server, who said he was really cool and down to earth. (And don’t forget hot!) He had the fried Brussels spouts, avocado salad, and chicories salad (yeah, that’s a lot of salad), plus a glass of wine. He departed when the restaurant got really busy.

Well, at least they were fried! :)

    They actually sound pretty good.

  7. Good News.

GENEVA — The Obama administration announced on Tuesday that the United States would use all the tools of American diplomacy, including the potent enticement of foreign aid, to promote gay rights around the world.

In a memorandum issued by President Obama in Washington and in a speech by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton here, the administration vowed to actively combat efforts by other nations that criminalize homosexual conduct, abuse gay men, lesbians, bisexuals or transgendered people, or ignore abuse against them.

“Some have suggested that gay rights and human rights are separate and distinct,” Mrs. Clinton said at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, “but in fact they are one and the same.”

Neither Mr. Obama nor Mrs. Clinton specified how to give the initiative teeth. Caitlin Hayden, the National Security Council’s deputy spokeswoman, said the administration was “not cutting or tying” foreign aid to changes in other nation’s practices.

Still, raising the issue to such prominence on the administration’s foreign policy agenda is important, symbolically, much like President Jimmy Carter’s emphasis on human rights.

  16. The U.S. government has looked the other way while members of the LGBT have been attacked in many countries around the world. The U.S. was one of the countries that refused to support gay rights when votes came up at the U.N. Yes, we'll have to see if things really change, but this is a great start.

And if you think the belief that gay rights are not separate from human rights even in this country, just take a look at any of the candidates running for the GOP nomination, for starters, and all those people who whine that gays are not entitled to "special" rights, i.e., equal treatment under the law.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's all human rights, no matter how you look at it. It's a clever spin; keep in mind that it's an election year, dear.

Promoting gay rights around the world is a laudible goal - but it is just one of many pressing issues our country has to face up to.

Our country needs to step up and accept climate change and propose what to do about it at the UN, and not hide behind what other growing nations are doing or not doing.

We are supposed to be leaders of the Western world. 7 Billion people (and growing) on the planet is an atrocious figure - and anyone who thinks that doesn't have an impact on the environment is a fool.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The "candidates" running for GOP elections' stance are so ridiculous as to not even be worth mentioning. Any sane, thinking person equates gay rights with human and civil rights. It's a matter of semantics. I'm sure you don't have to be reminded that HC's position on gay marriage is one where she supports civil unions and not marriage, and she's yet to say what her opinion is. But I do think she's doing a fantastic job as SoS and the country should be proud of her. Next year is an election year I should have said above.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I didn't know that this was a blog about climate change, BIWISI? I think there's a reason Special put up the info about Clinton's speech because the seed change is directly relevant/germain to the overall theme of the blog. Naturally, most posters would respond in a positive manner regarding the Obama Administration formally deciding to consider Gay Rights when allocating Foreign Aid. Particularly, in light of the loons on the Right consistently spouting hateful rhetoric to the contrary. Like Mr. Perry's (I can't remember the three government agencies I want to eliminate)recent hateful attack on Obama over the DADT repeal.

Of course, gay rights are human rights. The problem is many parts of the world do not agree (e.g. Nigeria, Uganda, Saudi Arabia, Jamaica, et al.) The policy shift may be politically expedient during an election year, but welcomed nonetheless.

  20. Boy, that is an interesting parallelism regarding that documentary, Special. Austin just happens to visit the same school that was the subject of the award Jake handed out this year for Best Documentary, Short Subject. Another happy coincidence, huh?

^^There's enough bullying, bashing and teen suicides in our own country without worrying about what they are doing in Dubai. We need to get our own house in order. There's no longer gay, straight, black, white - we're all getting screwed by bad US policies. Climate change and out of control population growth is leading to human rights violations, starvation and loss of jobs as well. Third world nations are one thing - but the US is held to a higher standard. Rick Perry et al don't have a chance to win in 2012, so the point is moot.

  23. Hilary Clinton is the Secretary of State (the most senior political appointee responsible for foreign policy) and therefore is the spokesperson for International Affairs. Hence, the reason for the speech about other countries. It's really very simple when you think about it.

Another argumentative troll who apparently has nowhere else to be. Talk about being off topic! Hillary is talking about a shift in America's foreign policy. Whether you want to get it or not, that speech is significant and historic. Did you even read the speech?

    ReplyDelete
  25. An excerpt from Hillary's speech:

I am talking about gay, lesbian, bisexual and trance gender people. Human beings born free and given bestowed equality and dignity who have a right to claim that which is now one of the remaining Human Rights challenges of our time. I speak about this subject knowing that my own country's record on Human Rights for gay people is far from perfect until 2003 it was still a crime in parts of our country. Many Lateasha Barbour Americans have endured violence and harassment in their own lives and for some including many young people bullying and exclusion are daily experiences. So we, like all nations, have more work to do to protect Human Rights at home. Now raising this issue I know is sensitive for many people and that the obstacles rest on deeply held personal, political, cultural and religious beliefs.

So I come here before you with respect, understanding and humility. Even though progress on this front is not easy we cannot delay acting. So in that spirit I want to talk about the difficult and important issues we must address together to reach a global consensus that recognizes the Human Rights of LGBT. Some have suggested gay rights and Human Rights are separate. But in fact they are one in the same. Now of course 60 years ago the governments that drafted and passed the universal declaration of Human Rights were not thinking about how it applied to the LGBT community. They also weren't thinking about how it applied to indigenous people or children or people with disabilities or other marginalized groups.

In the past 6 years we have come to recognize members of these groups are entitled to the full measure of dignity and rights because like all people they share a common humanity....

    Jake Gyllenhaal Leaves Longtime Manager

EXCLUSIVE: Management 360′s Evelyn O’Neill tells me it’s a “very amicable parting” and she hopes he comes back since she and Jake Gyllenhaal go back such a long time — 8 years. “Sometimes people like change in their life. I think he’s amazing, I’m very proud of the work he did together, he was nominated for an Oscar, I want him back, and the door is always open. It is what it is.” I understand Gyllenhaal is not leaving for another manager and he’s not leaving his talent agency CAA. I have a feeling this may be the start of a trend as the movie biz is so muddled with the box office slump that stars who can’t put people in theater seats will see projects falling apart one after another. Rough sledding for the rep business.
