Out Spotlight

Today's Out Spotlight is an American women's college basketball player at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She is the first NCAA basketball player ever to score 2,000 points and block 500 shots. In 2012, the three-time All-American was named the AP Player of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. Today's Out Spotlight is Brittney Griner.

Brittney Yevette Griner was born October 18, 1990 the 6 ft 8 in (2.03 m) ball player, wears a men's US size 17 or 18 shoe and has an arm span of 86 inches.

Griner attended Nimitz High School in Houston, Texas and in addition to lettering in basketball throughout high school, she played varsity volleyball as a freshman.

During her senior year, she led the Cougars to the Texas 5A girls basketball state championship game, where Nimitz lost 52–43 to Mansfield Summit High School. She dunked 52 times in 32 games as a senior, setting a single-game record of seven dunks against Aldine High School. The mayor of Houston Bill White declared May 7, 2009, Brittney Griner Day. On November 11, 2008, she recorded 25 blocks in a game against Houston Alief Hastings, the most ever recorded by a female in a high school game in the US. In her 2008–09 season, she recorded 318 blocks, a single season record.

In 2009, Griner was named the nation's #1 high school women's basketball player by Rivals.com and was selected to the 2009 McDonald's All-American basketball team. She was named a WBCA All-American and participated in the 2009 WBCA High School All-America Game, leading the team by scoring 20 points and collecting 9 rebounds.

As a freshman at Baylor University, Griner's 223 blocked shots set the all time single-season record, establishing her as one of the greatest shot blockers in women's basketball history. On December 16, 2009, she recorded Baylor's first triple-double with 34 points, 13 rebounds, and Big 12 Conference record 11 blocked shots. Griner became the seventh player to dunk during a women's college basketball game, and only the second woman to dunk twice in a single college game on January 2, 2010, making the second and third dunks of her college career in a lopsided 99–18 victory over against Texas State University.

On March 3, 2010, Griner was ejected from a game for punching Texas Tech player Jordan Barncastle in the face. Griner and Barncastle were battling for position near the lane. As a foul was being called on Barncastle, Griner took two steps toward her before throwing a roundhouse punch with her right hand. The punch thrown by Griner broke Barncastle's nose. Lady Bears coach Kim Mulkey imposed a one-game suspension in addition to the one-game suspension mandated by NCAA rules.

Baylor entered the NCAA Tournament as a 4th seed, and knocked off top-seeded Tennessee in the Sweet 16 of the 2010 season. On March 22, Griner set an NCAA tournament record with 14 blocked shots in a 49–33 win against the Georgetown Hoyas. In the Elite Eight, Baylor defeated Duke 51–48, with Griner blocking 9 shots, totaling 35 for the tournament, a new NCAA Women's Tournament record. Duke's Alison Bales had held the previous record of 30 blocks in the 2006 NCAA Women's Tournament. Baylor reached the Final Four, before losing to eventual-champion UConn, 70–50. Griner was named an AP Second Team All-American.

As a sophomore, Griner received First Team All-American honors after averaging 23 points a game, including a career-high 40 points against Green Bay in the Sweet 16.

In her junior season, she averaged 23.2 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5 blocks per game. She blocked more shots than any other Division I women's team that season. Griner was named AP Player of the Year and The 2012 Premier Player of Women's College Basketball.

On April 3, 2012, Griner led Baylor with 26 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocked shots to win the Division I Women's Basketball Championship, 80–61 over Notre Dame. She was named the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player. Baylor finished its undefeated season with 40 wins, the most in NCAA history.

After winning the championship on April 3, 2012, Griner decided to withdrawal her candidacy for a roster spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic women's basketball team. A month later she broke her wrist after jumping off her skateboard when she was going down a ramp.

In September of 2011, Griner spent two weeks playing under coach Geno Auriemma for the U.S. National Team as part of its European training tour. Griner was the only college player in the group. She averaged 12.8 points and 7.3 rebounds a game with the USA team in Europe.

Griner was the sole player still playing in college on the 2012 U.S. Olympic women's basketball team finalists roster. Excluding her, the average age on the finalists roster was approximately 30 years old compared to Griner, who was 22 years old at the time of the Olympics. She decided in April 2012 not to participate in the 2012 Olympics due to family illness and her school schedule.

Along with being selected as the number one high school player in the country by Rivals.com, she was featured on the cover of ESPN's Rise magazine, and was selected by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association as the 2009 State Farm/WBCA High School Player of the Year.

Earlier this year there was talk that Mark Cuban owner of the Dallas Mavericks was interest in giving Griner a tryout for the NBA. Although she has the skills and height comparable to NBA players, she lacks in pure body mass, weigh 40lbs less that most NBA players.

In the 2013 WNBA Draft, the Phoenix Mercury selected Griner as the 1st overall pick.

Griner is trailblazing off the court as well. After being select earlier this spring in the WNBA draft, she revealed that she is gay. In an interview with Sport Illustrated (SI.com) on this past Wednesday, Griner acknowledged that she is gay.

"Brittney Griner was so nonchalant and confident when she publicly acknowledged she is gay, you would have thought she just told the world that she liked potato chips", the SI article commented.

Asked about coming out Griner said "It really wasn't too difficult. I wouldn't say I was hiding or anything like that. I've always been open about who I am and my sexuality. So it wasn't hard at all. If I can show that I'm out and I'm fine and everything's OK, then hopefully the younger generation will definitely feel the same way."

The simplicity of her answer is striking, and telling. It said a lot about who she is, and it sent a clear, inspirational message to any person who might be considering coming out.

She also revealed in the interview that she was bullied as a child, explaining, "It was hard. Just being picked on for being different. Just being bigger, my sexuality, everything". She said she is very passionate about working with children in order to bring attention to the issue of bullying, particularly in the LGBT community.

The Dirty Dozen

Get out your red pens and scorecards because it's Red Arrow Time

And it's all about the alleged picture of Jake and Anna K.

Ready set go.....

1. Why is there a perfect subtle line down the middle of picture - to the left it is out of focus and fuzzy and to the right, clear and sharp?

 (working clockwise)

2. (Right lower corner) From the angle of the camera how can the person (who is left handed btw) drinking the beer be sitting so close to the photographer, who used his right hand to take the picture?

3.The table and the glasses.  It looks like a picnic table but actually it look more like  long tables at a beer garden.  Also look at the size of the glasses - they are larger than the ones that are used in the US.   Why does the the picture make you think Europe  more than NYC?

4. Hand with the glass (left side of picture).  Look at the picture.  Why does it look like that hand is resting on the girls shoulder. Who would put a glass that close to someone's face.  And for matter How freakin' tall must that person be if it is over 5'2" inches ( the height of the Anna K if that is who they are claiming it to be) and they're still not anywhere close their mouth.

5. Speaking of height - how can Anna at 5' 2" with her head bent down be the same height as Jake who is 6'.   And don't say they are sitting because look at the guy to Jake's right - he's standing and so are all the people standing behind them.

6. Why is the girls head too small for her body?  And if you say that's her pony tail, look again you don't see a neck and look at  the hand to the left there is a distinct line between the knuckles of the hand holding the glass and the side of her hair.

7. Speaking of hair - it can't be Anna.  Why?  Because Anna doesn't have red hair at the moment.  She's gone blonde for a role.  She put a picture up of her with blonde hair on her instagram April 11 that was Thurs.  How did she have red hair 2 days later  (Source)

8. Grey sweater/ Jake's Hat. The person in the grey sweater is out of proportion. The shoulder if too big and round for a person who has a torso that trim.  Or should that be "thinned" as in Photoshopped.  Also the tip of their chin is cut off.

9. And Jake's head is known to be big, really big, but it looks small in comparison to the upper arm of the person in the grey sweater.  Something stinks and it starts at the head in this arrow.

10.   Speaking of stinking from the head down.  Check out under Jake's chin.  If you are going to fill in the space underneath after you dropped him in the picture at least make the pixels the same color. It's a shade or two off, and it shows!

11.  Look how sharp the line between Jake's back and the person in the black shirt behind him is... it lends to the argument that Jake was dropped into the picture.

12.  Look at Jake's lower back. What is that supposed to be pushing up his shirt?  If it was a glass it is smaller than anything else in the whole picture and any of the other glasses.  If it was a can, it would be more likely tipped over than pushing up a shirt.

Think a dozen is enough?

Not in so many words

In the small moments of this week many found many those thinking about those they love, those they cherish, those that fill the spaces in their life as friends, family and loves.

Sometimes it is loud and clear

other times subtle

But the sentiment is the same.

And  this week he found another way to say....still and always

Wild Geese
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting --
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

~ Mary Oliver ~
And it's not just him , or them,
  but them ....
While there are are comment and articles saying Jake denied having children during his interview for Prisoners. When he actually found a way to say something  much more:
"The children I know and love in my life."

Twins and Triplets

Looks like Jake is going back in time to have another triple play

No no time travel in his movies, but it will be back in time like 2005 when Jake had Proof, Jarhead and BBM out the same year.

This time it will be with twins, and two films with the same director, Denis Villeneuve and another with a director coming off his best year ever.

Even thought David O. Russell walked away from the production horrors that plagued the movie Nailed,  the studio that own the movie will use his Academy Award winning success to recoup some of the money it lost.  The word was Jessica B had one more scene to shoot before production was force to shut down.  A pivotal scene that set up her quest for healthcare reform,  still under the contract for that scene, the now the word is that she recently went back and filmed it.  The movie is slated to come out later this year.

But kicking off Jake's triple play is actually the movie that Jake's character meets his double.  An Enemy, his first film with Villeneuve is now retitled "Enemy Within"  and it's new release date is August 28.

What else is happening on August 28th?   That would be 70th Venice International Film Festival.  Will Enemy Within, open up Venice?  And will it be a contender for the  Leone d'Oro (Golden Lion)?

Less than a month later (September 20th) Jake's second movie with Villeneuve,  along with  an all-star cast, Prisoners opens and tonight the first sneak peek popped up on Entertainment Tonight.

Prisoners has already had mentioned as an Oscar contender.  Will we see Jake relive his first triple with a second Oscar nomination? Time will tell.

Bonus Round:  Which of the films will win the Jake Hair-do Hall of Fame?

Poetic License

Jake joined the Academy of American Poets  for The 11th Annual Poetry & the Creative Mind, tonight at Lincoln Center.

The event had artists and public figures reading their favorite poems.  Jake was a last minute addition to the line up that included Jan Abumrad, Jake's buddy Mario Batali, Dick Cavett, Patricia Clarkson, Tyne Daly, Glen Hansard, National Student Poet Claire Lee, Stew, Rose Styron, Amber Tamblyn, Calvin Trillin, and Kathleen Turner.

Did Jake read a favorite poems from childhood?  Or one he grew to love as an adult?  Speaking of love, perhaps a sonnet? Something by Neruda?

A poem for someone he loves?  Or a poem shared to him by someone who loves him?  A poem passed down and one he continues to pass on?

Or did he mix it up with a limerick about a man from Nantucket?  Something Seussical or perhaps Silversteinish? An ode to Kale?

Was it something deep and soulful?  Or a rhythmic rhyme?   Could he have picked a poem from his Pops?

Sharing poetry is sharing one's self.  That place where the soul is touched.  What will Jake's poem reveal about him.

The events celebrates National Poetry Month, established by the Academy in 1996 and now is the largest literary celebration in the world. Proceeds from tonight allow the Academy to donate free classroom materials to thousands of schools and libraries across the country.

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way than this:
where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.
