The guys have both been involved both land and sea.

And while Jake hits the garden Austin was talking trash - well about composting. Hmmm wonder where he was composting.

Both have done their part in helping protect and preserve and pass it on to the future.

Jake was seen out with sister Maggie at Georgio Baldi's in Santa Monica on Saturday night.

And then out to see Arcade Fire this week.

Going retro his jacket look like what would happen if a 70's satin jacket and 80's parachute pants had a baby -

And you can't forget the accessories.

Is that Jake's black diamond "engagement" ring?

And of course his "my little pony"

So proud of my Boston.

 You took back what was ours and showed the world what happens when people come together for good.

To the 36,000 runners, 4,000 officers, to the countless volunteers and medical staff , the million spectators and all of us who love that dirty water.

Out Spotlight

Today's Out Spotlight was a lifelong civil rights attorney and activist against racial and sexual discrimination. She was the first African-American female Episcopal priest. Today's Out Spotlight is The Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 20, 1910, Pauli Murray lost her mother when she was 3 years old. She was sent to Durham, North Carolina to live with her maternal grandparents and aunts. Raised by older relatives, she grew up with a strong sense of independence and self-reliance.

In 1933, Murray graduated from Hunter College and taught for the WPA Worker’s Education Program. Wishing to pursue legal studies, she applied to the University of North Carolina, but was rejected on the basis of race.

This discrimination impelled her to pursue a Bachelor of Law degree at Howard University and become active in the civil rights movement. She joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and organized sit-ins to end segregation at restaurants in Washington, D.C. Murray co-founded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), along with Bayard Rustin, who was openly gay.

Denied admission to Harvard Law School due to her gender, she earned her master’s degree at the University of California, where she focused on equal rights for women. She became the first African-American female deputy attorney general of California.

She returned to New York and practiced law privately for five years. Her book “States’ Laws on Race and Color” (1951) was described by Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall as the bible for civil rights lawyers. In 1956, Murray published “Proud Shoes: The Story of an American Family,” a biography of her grandparents’ struggle with racial prejudice.

In the 1960’s, President Kennedy appointed Murray to the Committee on Civil and Political Rights. She worked with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement. She spoke out against the marginalized role black women played in movement leadership.

Though Murray never identified as a lesbian, her longest lasting relationships were with women.  Refusing to accept her homosexuality due to its association at the time with mental illness, she ultimately self-identified as a heterosexual man.

In 1977, Murray became the first African-American female ordained an Episcopal priest. She died July 1, 1985 at the age of 74. Her autobiography “Songs in a Weary Throat: An American Pilgrimage” (1987) was published posthumously.

 “As an American I inherit the magnificent tradition of an endless march toward freedom and toward the dignity of all mankind.”

The best part of the blog is meeting the people who come here.  It has been wonderful to meet so many great friends in person. I really hope I can meet more of you.

Tommy (Tempting) Trouble Spots

Tommy is going to have a lot more people to bump into in the second season of Ray Donovan.

And that has the potential for Tommy to be a trouble spot.

A character like Tommy can bump around in the story and fit anywhere.

The biggest star to join on this season is Ann-Margret who is cast for a recurring guest spot on the upcoming second season. Per Deadline, she will play June Wilson, a major star back in her day who has a past with Ray’s boss Ezra Goldman

Some of the other castings include:

Vinessa Shaw (Vegas), who will play Kate, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for The Boston Globe who is writing a book on Sully (James Woods’ character from last season) and comes to L.A. to investigate his death.

Hank Azaria has been cast for the major role of James Cochran, an FBI bigshot who becomes a thorn in Ray’s side. Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks) will play his frumpy wife, Holly.

Kip Pardue is set to play fellow FBI agent Volcheck with Andrea Bogart (General Hospital) cast to play his wife Megan.

So Tommy could be the go-to boy for June to be seen with out on the town. [Can't you see Tommy telling her that he loves her movies and despite his reputation around town she knows he's  Rock "safe" date from the start]

He could say something dumb to the Globe reporter. We know that Tommy's not the sharpest pencil in the box. It might not have anything to do with Sully's death, but it creates another mess for Ray.

And who can't imagine what the FBI could find out about Tommy, when looking into Ray's clients.

Bearded Peaks

It's official it is scientifically proven that beards are out.

Wait wait - don't mix this beard with out.

Yes researchers at the University of New South Wales have recently shown that beards have hit their peak.

The study showed that men who sport facial hair become less attractive to women as beards become more fashionable.

The study asked "1,453 heterosexual or bisexual women to respond to 36 photos of men’s faces. They found that, when women saw hairy face after hairy face, they began to prefer clean-shaven men."

So the more beards out there the less attractive bearded men appear to women.

Jake is there a method to your madness?  Beard recruitment to make women less attractive to you? The more hipsters beard up, the less you have to deal with women?

Especially since Jakey was used as an example in not one but two article that appeared about this study.

Jake was the lead picture in an article from Telegraph.co.uk

Telegraph:  Jake "not as attractive when surrounded by other bearded men, apparently"

and his beard bun combo used as an example in New York Magazine's The Cut  who said put the study this way:

"Peak Beard. Peak Beard. It’s the Day After Tomorrow of facial hair!"

They captioned Jake's picture "Man-Bun Adjacent beard"

While the study said heterosexual and bisexual women didn't like them, they didn't say anything about bear loving fellas.

Hmmm... so that's your angle Jake?
