Out Spotlight XV

Today's spotlight focuses on another Hollywood actor, who you might say is the flip side of William Haines, our Valentine's Out Spotlight. Ramon Novarro was also a silent screen star who successfully transitioned to talkies. He worked at MGM, along with Billy Haines during the '20s and '30s. Novarro was from Mexico and moved to L. A. with his family to escape the Mexican revolution. Novarro was the first Latin Hollywood star. His biggest successes were the films Ben-Hur and Mata Hari.

Novarro was gay, and struggled with it mightily. He was not comfortable with it like Haines was. Novarro was Catholic and worked to reconcile his faith and his sexuality. He never seemed at ease. Novarro did move in the same circles as Haines, and Novarro's sexuality was fairly well-known, for much of the 1920s. Novarro had a significant relationship with his publicist, Herbert Howe, that was alluded to in the fan magazines. The gossips wrote about Novarro not being married, never having a girlfriend, and spending all his time with his family and his publicist. In the early '30s, when Hollywood and the country became much more conservative, Novarro became reclusive. Louis B. Mayer also tried to force Novarro into a lavender marriage. Novarro refused. In 1935, MGM let him go, the same year Mayer pushed Billy Haines out.

Novarro, unfortunately, did not have the ability to reinvent himself like Billy Haines. He also did not have a strong long-term relationship to support him. He became more reclusive and drank heavily. The only sexual contact he would allow himself was from hustlers he picked up in the street. Novarro did some character acting after 1935 and always hoped for a comeback. This was not to be. On October 30, 1968 Novarro was brutally beaten to death in his home by two hustlers he had hired for sex. They believed Novarro had a large sum of money in the house, but this was not the case. The men would not believe Novarro when he denied having money and killed him. They left his house with $20 they took from his bathrobe. The two men were caught and convicted but were released fairly quickly. Both picked up new charges (none as serious as Novarro's murder) and were re-incarcerated. The two men have done more time on their less serious charges than they did for Novarro's murder.

What is interesting to me about Ramon Novarro is that during the '20s he was out and was even in a relationship. Then, in reaction to the new conservatism of the times, he attempted to go back into the closet, but he was not willing to go all the way. He had to know that when he refused a lavender marriage, it would be all over for him, just like it was for Billy Haines. But refuse he did. A brave act. And a sad life. RIP, Ramon Novarro.

But did anyone see the very last skit? Ellen Paige Lesbian Skit on SNL Thoughts?

Don't think Jake is thus inclined...

  5. Thank you for this post, it's fascinating.

Ramon Novarro's life story would make an interesting movie adaptation.

How soon IS now, Mr Morrissey? ;)
    Great song.

  6. Interesting post on Ramon. More talented [and regular folk] end up existing/slowly dying like him than thriving like Haines.

where you find people for the Spotlight is great. Truth is I thot I'd be bored at first when you had the idea [sorry!] but now I look forward to them.

btw the last posted Saturday comment by an Anon should be deleted too imo.

  7. Just watched that Ellen Page lesbian skit. We used to call women like that "Lilith Fair lesbians"- women who would go to hear women's music, become all hyped up by all the female energy, and start sucking face with their best friends. Then they would get over it and go home to their boyfriends.

Truth is I thot I'd be bored at first when you had the idea [sorry!] but now I look forward to them.

I'm really flattered by this, thanks. :)

    P. S. I took care of that anon comment!

  8. Thanks old movie watcher. Great clip.

Novarro had so many negative messages coming at him about his sexuality, not only the Catholic church, and Hollywood, but also coming from a Latin heritage as well.

He was a beautiful and talented actor as you can see by the clip. It is a true tragedy what happened to Ramon.

It is a greater tragedy that even today there are those who struggling with the same things.

Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corn cribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.

  11. Thanks for another fantastic and fascinating Spotlight. I never cease to be amazed by these artists who resisted TPTB as far back as the 20's!

I'll come back to get a look at the links above a bit later. I have some office work to do at home today and I really have to start now!

  13. Thanks for the link to Ellen Page, I went to bed before it was on. Earlier this week Michael Musto speculated about Ellen Page when talking about all the stars who bring their mothers to the Oscars. Well, apparently Ellen's publicist called him up about it last night during SNL. I read all about that before coming here and learning about the skit. Here's the Musto story (sorry, I can't remember how to link).

  14. You shut your mouth
    How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved,
    Just like everybody else does.

This is one of my favorites Smiths songs too, and these lines have always resonated with me, how people are forced by society to conform, in many ways, not the least of which is whom they should love. I don't think people can repress their true selves, and shouldn't have to. These societal messages harm everyone, and we see another in a tragic death that should never have happened, and was not treated with the seriousness it should have been.

Beautiful film clip and a beautiful man. Thanks, guys.

  15. Ellen's publicist sounds like a self-loathing lesbian:

"I don't know why people are so mean," Bush whinnied in a wounded voice.

Huh? Why on Earth would Jake "emotionally" need someone like her?

Did Jake's family and all of his friends deserted him?

  18. Very interesting post on Novarro, and to contrast his life with Haines. And the fact they were both let go in 1935 is no coincidence. A few weeks ago I went and saw a speaker at NYPL talk about his book on censorship and the Hays Code. The Hays Code was enacted in 1930, but the studios didn't start following it until 1934.

One thing the author talked about (I've forgotten his name) is that the Depression and the general breakdown in government during that time contributed to HW's being able to make all of these outrageous pre-code movies. Then once FDR was in and government regained control so to speak over the country and the economy conservatives were able to get the upper hand and force HW to change under the threat of censorship. Cracking down on people's sexuality often goes hand in hand with cracking down on political dissent.

  19. Dresden we are reposting this with some editing. This post orginially included some information about one of Jake's friends we don't want posted on the blog.

Our policy is that we are not going post personal information about Jake's civilian friends.

    From last post :

"Ted said Reeke would last til the end of awards season. The Oscars are over, so that could mean PR is setting the stage with these buddy pics so that when Jake and Reese do break up, they can make the innocuous But They Are Still Good Friends Claim. Obligation over, minimal waves in the press, Jake and Reese can quietly move on."

The charade goes on, but it makes sense, given the logic of bearding. He still needs her professionally and emotionally, and his personal life is still a mess. He also needs the pr; the moon movie is not even close to filming right now, and other projects are still up in the air.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Although I'm a bit late for the party can I just add that the latest Reeke photos are some of the funniest I've seen. In some it looks like she's postively stooping, and that neck lock really looks uncomfortable.

Loathe though I am to say it I do like her top though, quite fancy one myself.

(Also, looks like Penelope is semi-flopping, which is nice).

  21. IHJ is NY based, the pics would be PST. Seems they were posted immediately which is quite a coincidence. I am quite surprised by the Page 6 post. Aren't they usually pretty snarky about Reeke, or am I mixing them up with another NY based entity. I know there are a couple with similar names.

One thing that is very perplexing to me is that we have no clue where Austin lives these days. NY or West Coast. Hardly any current details about him at all. I wish Ted would mention the boyfriend and what he is up to.

I asked my pal was he with Reese or a chick? "Nope, some tall guy." They were laughing and talking about."killing in a part". They got in and went and sat in the back.I asked my pal why didn't you get a cell phone pic, he said it was too dark." My pal is not a Jake fan, so not a"fanfic" Again, for what it's worth."

"I actually was sitting next to him and a friend in Father's Office in Santa Monica last night. At one point I overheard Jake ask his friend, "Did you watch the debates......I like Obama." Don't know if that means that's his final choice.

For what it's worth he's taller than one might expect.

It's on Jakes thread on imdb named Obama or Hillary.

  47. Interesting post. Now, a couple of brief comments:

There's no evidence that Louis B. Mayer ever tried to force Ramon Novarro into an arranged marriage.

And Novarro didn't really become more reclusive in the 1930s. He was partying a whole lot -- and it shows if you watch his movies of that period.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Here's the story for you who dont want to go to Perez site. The pic is them coming out of a store, the doorman holding the door open. Of course Jake came out first and Reese is 3 steps behind.

Reese is doing some Avon speech at the UN on Fri or Sat.

    Gyllenspoon's Romantic Getaway

Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon are still together and seemingly stronger than ever!

The couple were spotted in NewYork City this weekend, where they were seen leaving the A.P.C boutique in SoHo on Sunday.

Perezcious reader Taylor ran into Gyllenspoon on the street Sunday, and this is what was observed:

"My friend and I were walking on 34th and 8th in Manhattan, at 4:45 pm and saw Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal holding hands and walking down 8th. It was really sweet…they were holding hands, he was holding her Balenciaga bag, and he was kissing her on the head while they waited for the light to change."

    Awwwwww!!!!!!!!!

  55. There's no evidence that Louis B. Mayer ever tried to force Ramon Novarro into an arranged marriage.

Andre, I read that on a few internet sources that Novarro alluded to Mayer trying to get him into a lavender marriage.

Guys, it appears that we are important enough to impersonate and that somebody has A LOT of time on their hands. There are comments on the Gyllenspoon post @ Perez from ME, Frenchy, Spesh, Destiny, and me. I can assure you all that I do not post as Wicked unless I can do it under a Blogger ID. I don't think any of our regulars made any of the comments attributed to them either. And there are quite a few of them. A lot of them have us calling Brokeback fans losers. I think someone is trying to drive a wedge between us and the BBM fandom. Fortunately, I don't think BBM folks are dumb.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Well I know that I don't post as Special K unless under my blogger id as well.

    ReplyDelete
  57. How very weird of them. Are they (or is it one person--probably) that obsessed with this site?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Please, I have never posted on Perez and haven't visited there in almost a year.

It is flattering, though, to think that our names hold that much weight. Flattering in a stalkerish way.

My guess would be Jeff's handiwork.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The only places I post under Destiny are here, Spooky2th and Austin Media.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Do you know that Jeff has never seen Brokeback Mountain and yet he posts constantly in the Jake Gyllenhaal board on imdb? Now BBM is unquestionably the highlight of Jake's career (and probably will be even in 20 years) but how can you claim to be a fan of Jake's and say you have never seen that movie???

    ReplyDelete
  61. Perez? I don't even visit that place anymore and even when I did I never posted there - just too borrrrring IMO. The only places where I use the Frenchy name are OMG, Spooky2th and AustinMedia. And the only other place where I post is FCC!

I agree Wicked, Brokies are not stupid. I totally trust they won't fall for such a childish trick.

    Back to business now:

Thanks a bunch for the beautiful Novarro/Garbo clip and also for the link to the Alternative Film Guide. Well, not exactly a link but I clicked on Andre's name and found a very interesting site. :)

I watched my copy of Rendition but then foolishly lent it to my brother, then to one of my sisters. I just got it back a couple of hours ago and will watch the supplements. :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I do need to clarify that I do post under Special K on Austin Media and Spooky2th as well as here on OMG.

Frenchy I hope that the Brokies know that we would never feel that way about a Brokeback.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I never post on Perez, but I had to tonight. I'm sure the BBM crowd is not stupid either, but I still felt the need to say something; I think the other posters at Perez should know what is going on.

    ReplyDelete
  64. When I posted the pic site here I read the comments after. There were about 72 I think the last time I read them. I noticed there was Wicked and a frenchy (and they were anti- BBM, gay) but it didn't dawn on me that it was someone doing misdeeds. I just thought it was a coincidence of the names. Ugh.

I only go to PHilton for alerts or stuff like that. never commented either, they seem juvenile. the first 20 comments are all "FIRST!" - who cares.

    ReplyDelete
  65. sorry, I was bleeeccch, the one who posted the NYC site.

    ReplyDelete
  66. After slogging through the sh*t at Perez, I got a good laugh out of Dlisted's take on Reeke in NYC.

    ReplyDelete
  67. More from NYC is right - Jake don't look happy. At all. Reese looks like she's trying to save face for the camera. Well, of course, stupid of me to say that, lol. Of course she plays to the camera. But Jake looks pissed. Probably just something temporary. *rolls eyes*

btw was it frenchy or M who noticed Jake likes to emerge from the door first? He holds it open for his agent/mgr/PR people, tho. In the NYC pics he's first, not even facing Reese, walking off w/o her. But we're to expect they were holding hands and kissing a few blocks away? maybe, but I think the Perez description of them waiting at the signal was fiction.

    What'all think?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Destiny I followed your lead and posted a rectifying comment at Perez. Wonder if it will make a difference since, as Lastlol says above, commenters over there are extremely juvenile. But at least our corrections are there for the record. ;)

Last, it's M who pointed that out -I mean I know I didn't since Reeke pics only get but a cursory glance from me. :)

I swear to God some people in the Brokeback Mountain fandom are beginning to remind me of those Dungeon and Dragon nerds, you know what I mean?

    @PH: #65 Frenchy says:
Dungeons and Dragons is this game where in the 80s a bunch of kids took it SO SERIOUSLY that their parents had to get them de-programmed.

    Someone is playing nasty games.

And thanks to everyone at OMG for their cooler heads prevail approach to this whole thing.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I just saw the NY pictures. Wow, did PR really mess up this time. They don't even look like they know each other!! No wonder Perez was paid off to invent some spin about holding hands later on. Geesh, Atticus has more chemistry with the sidewalk than these two have in this photo. Jake looks like he wants to sprint to the nearest cab, and Reese has this sour, almost apologetic look on her face, like "Gosh, I know fellas, I'm trying, but it's hard, you know?" Oh boy, DNR on these pix. Where's that Photoshop when you need it?

    ReplyDelete
  73. They say a picture is worth a thousand words Bosinney That first picture of Jake & Reese on IHJ says it all.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I'm sure the Jeesers and everyone will just say Lover's Quarrel or Jake hates to shop or Jake thought they would be late for something and how Reese knows how to temper him blah blah blah. They'll be lovey dovey next pics.

    ReplyDelete
  75. For what it's worth, as a long time reader of Jake's Eyelashes on DC forum, which is the largest brokeback site, I don't think many of them read perez. He is too nasty and not liked. Ennisjack.com, the other brokeback site will not even allow any pap photos, so doubtful many perez readers there either. My guess is jack is doing the deed too. He is not allowed to comment on many sites so that may be all that's left.

First thing I noticed in the pics is that the door practically slammed in her face. Jake looks like he is late for something and running away. Showing absolutely no interest if she is even following. And yet another unflattering look on Reese's face. I'd call these the most obvious evidence that they are just friends yet.

    ReplyDelete
  76. The woman on the sidewalk with the big silver bag is trying not to get runned over by Jake!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'm sorry but there there is something really OFF about these two...he's acting like he's not even WITH her in these photos!! (NYC-IHJ)

    ReplyDelete
  78. There is another set of pics from NY and I don't know what to think anymore. Saw them first at ONTD

  79. One really good thing about Jake taking reese to NYC is that they don't have to stay at a hotel they can stay at Jake and Austin's place. I am sure that is where Austin snd sophia stayed. I wonder if Austin just might be in NYC also:-)

  80. I am so late... great post about Ramon Novarro. Thank you.
