Out Spotlight XII- Valentine's Edition

Quick, can you name the top box office draw of 1930? No? Well, probably the reason for that is because it's William Haines, the first out gay actor who bucked the Hollywood system and he is largely forgotten today. Haines appeared in films such as Brown of Harvard, The Midnight Express, and Sally, Irene, and Mary. Haines was one of the few actors to successfully transition from silent films to talkies. His forte was as a comic actor, usually playing an affable rogue who takes nothing seriously until there is a tragedy that wises him up. Then he gets the girl.

William Haines' problem was that he was an open homosexual. Since 1926, Haines had lived openly as a couple with Jimmy Shields, who was his stand-in for one of his films. Studios kept Haines' sexual orientation from the press, but Haines was known to make comments that alluded to it and also brought Shields with him to premieres. In 1933, Haines was arrested when he picked up a sailor in LA. MGM head Louis B. Mayer gave him an ultimatum, make a "lavender marriage" and give up Shields, or Haines was out. Haines chose Shields and they were ultimately together for 50 years. Mayer terminated Haines' contract and he acted in a few films after that, but could not keep his career going.

In 1930, Shields and Haines had bought an antique store and both were interested in interior design. When Haines' career foundered, the men turned to this occupation full-time. Their business was a huge success and they found themselves with many Hollywood folks as clients. They are credited with single-handedly creating the California Style. The men moved to Malibu after they were accused by a neighbor of propositioning his son and beaten. Many famous folks came to the couple's aid and urged them to report the attack to the police, including Joan Crawford, Claudette Colbert, George Burns, Gracie Allen, Kay Francis, Charles Boyer, and Marion Davies. The men did not report the incident and settled into Malibu, and they are largely credited with making Malibu fashionable.

The couple lived together and Haines never returned to films, despite his friend Gloria Swanson extending him a personal invitation to be in the film Sunset Boulevard in 1950. Joan Crawford described them as, "the happiest married couple in Hollywood." And they remained so until Haines' death from lung cancer in 1973. Six months later, Shields, probably suffering from Alzheimer's, put on Haines' pajamas, took an overdose of pills, and got into their bed to die. His suicide note read, "It's no good without Billy." They are buried side by side.

The interior design business that Haines and Shields built continues to this day. Check out their amazing interiors at their website- http://www.williamhaines.com/. For more on William Haines, check out this book- Wisecracker, The Life and Times of William Haines, Hollywood's First Openly Gay Star, by William J. Mann, written in 1998.

Billy and Jimmy Forever!

Sighting of Jake from IMDb Brothers Board-

This past thursday I saw Jake in the bar where I work which is across the street froma home where they were shooting some scenes. God is he gorgeous!! He was in there with the director and some of the crew drinking.

Such a love story! How bittersweetly beautiful.

Checked out their website. Classically beautiful designs.

Wicked said...

I think Jake's been in NM since the end of January, when Brothers started filming again.

Special K said...

Brothers was running two weeks behind schedule. They are trying to wrap things up by the 12th. It is definitely a tight schedule because they have to wrap as soon as possible. Jim Sheridan doesn't have much time to edit they have a Dec 8th release date. This is moving it up from a 2009 release. It sounds like the studio was liking what they saw in the dailies. Which sounds encouraging.

It's no good without Billy

Oh, to find a love so strong, so essential to life that is worth giving up, without regret or remorse, fortune and glory!

*sigh*

Great story, Wicked! The Out Spotlight is a fabulous feature on this blog. I was wondering if it would be possible to start bi-weekly columns on GLBT cinema and literature also. The appeal of OMG is all-encompassing, IMO - not just restricted to Jaustin and HW gossip.
It will be really nice to see all the Out Spotlight articles listed just like the OMG song journal.

Thanks for such an uplifting story. Another brave, unspoken one. I had to pinch myself when I read the dates: 1926, 1930… It's heartwarming to know that he and his partner were together till the end. Incredible to know that should Haines be alive today, his attitude would probably trigger the same reactions in HW. Talk about being frozen in time!

I second Rattler's suggestion of listing the Spotlight articles (I was trying to find the one on Mary Oliver recently so my seconding is a bit selfish here :D). And I would LOVE a column on GLBT cinema and litterature.

Thanks again for your hard work girls!

I'm looking for the title of a book I read years ago. It was a gay love story set in the 1940's. They met in college and broke up. One of them died in WWII and the other became closeted and married. The book was sad.

destiny said...

I've never heard of Haines before. Fascinating story, and the courage it took to do that at that time. Unfortunately when it comes to HW not that much has changed as we all know.

None of the titles you mentioned is available on Netflix, and in fact only two films he made are available, including one with Mary Pickford which I've added to my que. Is the book worth reading Wicked?

Florida Tom said...

Nice story Wicked. William was a real Hottie.

Can't help but look at the pics from yesterday's post. Damn A is sure proud of that ring.

destiny said...

I just wanted to address AG's comments about the ring in the previous thread. Fashion Week is a really big media event in NY, and you have to expect to be photographed if you go to anything, parties included. Austin would know that, and yet he still wore the ring. However he wasn't wearing the ring at the ACL music festival, where it was far less likely he'd be photographed or that any photos would be widely seen.

Anonymous said...

Do you think he's sending a message to Jake? Perhaps he hasn't been able to speak to him. What's new with Austin, is he working?

Wicked said...

I'm going to order the book, Destiny. I did so much research for this Spotlight because the more I found out, the more I wanted to know! I really want to know how Billy dropped hints about his sexuality in the '30s. I'll let you guys know when I get the book.

It will be really nice to see all the Out Spotlight articles listed just like the OMG song journal.

Damn, people! Give me more work! :) Actually, it's not that hard to do. I'll try and get to it in the next few days.

I have to tell you guys that Billy and Jimmy are my new OTP!

frenchy said...

Toni, can you give us more details about that book you're mentioning (name of characters for example)? I did a couple of searches on Google with the words in your comment but nothing relevant came out.

This is amazing, isn't it? :)

Wonderul Out Spotlight today, guys. :)

Anonymous said...

Really interesting, thank you Wicked. I want to find out more too.

Wicked said...

Toni, was this two men or two women? Do you know where it was set? Was it a true story or fiction?

Florida Tom said...

I wonder if A stayed at Jake's or should I say his and Jakes place when he attended the fashion shows and parties this week in NYC? These two guys even though we never see them together anymore sure hang out with the same crowd.
Either we see Jake with Austin's friends or Austin with Jake's friends.

Hopefully the talk about what Jake did and did not do in regards to Heath's death is over. We will probably never know. That is probably the way he wants it.

Anonymous said...

I hope the talk doesn't go on :( We've no way of knowing, I agree, Tom. Nice to see you back, by the way *

I wondered that about Austin too :)

Anonymous said...

The book was fiction. It was two men. One volunteer for the army, and died in combat. The other became a professor.

Anonymous said...

I believe it shouldn't end, at least civilized discussion about Jake's behavior towards Heath's memory. PR watches OMG, and they should know how his silence and slight are perceived, how his fans feel and think about his obvious choice to push the beard over honoring his friend.

Not advocating open season, mind you, rancor and hate is uncalled for. But, Jake should not be given a pass, not should PR be allowed to brush these past three weeks under a fluffy Valentine's Day story.

Anonymous said...

I hate to say this but i think that if there is a fluffy Valentine's Day story then the five remaining members of Jake's 'unique' (or any) fanbase will definately leave the building.

Hey guys, it's HephLo. The test above is me. It's been a while since I posted, and I wanted to make sure I still know how.

Anonymous said...

HephLo again.

I've missed posting, but I've been going through major life-changing stuff in RL.

I have been lurking, but really haven't had time to do much more.

I will try to do it more. I've missed interacting in the fandom.

Heph again.

I was just at Spooky2th. She added some pics of A and Sophia at another party from Fashion Week. I'm not sure anyone here has noticed/mentioned them so I'm giving the heads up. They're an addendum on the entry with the pics of them leaving/arriving at the other FW party.

frenchy said...

I can't believe you're back (((Heph))). I thought you had left the fandom for good. So nice to hear from you again. I hope everything's fine in your life.

Oh, and a very belated happy new year! xoxoxo

frenchy said...

I forgot to say thanks to Giuisi this morning for posting the translation. And I see Heph hasn't lost her habit of bringing news to her friends. Thanks for the Spooky pointer!

I believe discussions about Jake's behavior after Heath's passing will be unavoidable if we get a public love fest on Valentine's day. I also expect that topic to surface periodically for some time. Odd Man Out you wish that discussions stay civilized; experience has taught me that they are at OMG, that is if you discount trolls and posters who engage them.

Florida Tom said...

NETB and Meg we get through Valentines Day without quitting we are home free. I think we should expect stories of romance on Thursday and a little outing on the weekend. If we got through NY's eve with Jakie taking his honey to see Rufus:-) we can survive anything. Maybe he will take her to a Pet Shop Boys concert dor Valentines Day. LOL!

NE I as initially pretty upset about seeing A with Sophia but quess what "The Ring" is back on and he was flashing it again.

Sorry to rub it in to everyone up north but it was 74 and sunny in Fla. today. I actually got a little sunburn.

Anonymous said...

I ask you, how much can one person stand? ;)

Glad you're enjoying FL, Tom. :)

Um, how could Jake be seen on Thursday in NM and be in Austrailia the same day or the next? Was he light-beamed to Perth??

The ring..it might have needed repairs and thats why it was gone for awhile. If Austin is like me, I set things aside and they sit there for a long time and then I take it in to get fixed evenually.

Tom I'll help you rub it it in. It was 80 and sunny here today.

Anonymous said...

Um, how could Jake be seen on Thursday in NM and be in Austrailia the same day or the next? Was he light-beamed to Perth??

He never was in Perth. I think that IMDb sighting is credible. Someone else @ IMDb seconded it and said they'd been filming all week.

That's why I'm a superstar, blessed with incredible good looks, amazing talent, the best babe in the world and everything in the world that normal people (like you all--as Reese would say) covet. I can do anything and go anywhere faster than a locomotive.

Don't you all wish you were me?

Too bad about Heath. That wasn't good.

Special K said...

Guys, I just watched Bubble Boy (thanks Spesh!). It was much better and funnier than I thought it would be. Did anyone notice that the actor (John Carroll Lynch) who played Mr. Livingston in BB also played Arthur Leigh Allen in Zodiac? Small world!

destiny said...

I'm glad you finally watched BB, I have a real soft spot for it. I've laughed myself silly every time I've watched it. And it is indeed a small world, seems like Jake often ends up working more than once with actors. Unfortunately I don't think that will be the case with Austin.

frenchy said...

Of course I did! And he played the store manager in The Good Girl too, remember that one? In Zodiac's commentary Jake notes that it was pretty strange to see that guy showing up as the killer! :D

frenchy said...

I'm glad you finally watched BB, I have a real soft spot for it.

You're not alone Destiny. When I finally watched it for the first time it was "love at first viewing". I've watched it for the fourth time a couple of weeks ago. Wicked, you should give it another shot this time with the commentary on. It's funny and very interesting.

Special K said...

Great lines in BB. And definitely a lot of fun. And according to my nephew "one of the best stinkin' movies evah!" LOL

frenchy said...

Talking about comedies, I know that some people screamed in horror when Nailed was confirmed but I was actually happy to read that Jake was finally in something crazy like that.

Nite everybody!

destiny said...

I'm glad Jake is doing a comedy, and I think Nailed has potential. I really liked Three Kinds and Spanking the Monkey. On the other hand, I don't think the Huckabees movie was very good, and I worry about Jake working with a tyrant.

Anonymous said...

I think the role is a very good comedy showcase for him, however, Russell is a bastard (sorry I can't whitewash it--he's a monster) and if Jake is truly in a fragile state (as I believe he is--more so since Heath's passing), then I do worry about him too.

Anonymous said...

From the BAFTA's In Memoriam sequence. Heath was the last one honored and a BBM clip ("I wish I knew how to quit you" scene) was played. The camera then panned to Sienna Miller, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Goldblum and Orlando Bloom, all of whom looked very moved (especially Miller and Bloom). It was very well done and I liked that the audience clapped AFTER the montage--not during. Here's the youtube link:

Sorry that was me.

So is Austin dating Sophia now or why was he with her at all these parties in NY and not close to Jake who I am sure was not having a party week?

Anonymous said...

Wasn't Jake filming in NM this week? Also, Austin seemed to be in a group of friends with Sophia in some of the shots (not counting the cab ones). What was MOST interesting about the Fashion Week party shots was Austin being photographed with Matthew Katz-Frost, former Jake PA/confidante/suspected Ted source for Toothy Tile. Austin and Matt clearly looked chummy. And Austin had the ring back on...

Anonymous said...

Gossip girl, I think we are attributing some totally unverified meaning to that ring. But sure I can see the rest of your points. Though, I would not be partying if my partner was having a difficult time. Given the circumstances we believe they live their relationship in I would be holed up or something near NM and try to spend some time with Jake, if I were Austin. But if you think is just fine for Austin to be out partying this past week ....

Anonymous said...

>In 1933, Haines was arrested when he picked up a sailor in LA

I thought he lived with his partner already by then. But he was picking up sailors?

@why, this is called "double standard", you know when Jake is walking the dogs with Reese, he is unsensible and a horrible person, when Austin is partying and looking wasted instead of supporting his boyfriend, it is ok and he looks hot.

Wicked and Special K,
I have to say you do such an
outstanding job that is really quite remarkable! I have really
enjoyed all the articles on Austin. Please keep up the outstanding job!
Wicked, did you and the Mrs. pick
out Tink as a puppy or was she a
gift from someone? How is she doing now since her shots?
About Jake, he will grieve in
his own way. Austin obviously loves the ring. I sometimes do think that J&A have called it quits but do see each other sometimes. I do wish they could be
together always though. Could the
ring be a remembrance of "good times in the past?" I think that is just my imigination working
overtime.
Time will tell if J is with Reese for good. I guess we will just have to see.
Keep up the excellent work here at OMG! You are really doing
a great job!!
I am also a great fan of Jersey B/Tom because he is so good
and articulate at expressing himself.
