It's a Smaller World The Day after Tomorrow

Remember this?

Yup,  It's The Day After Tomorrow

Now what do  this

and this

and this

have in common?

Producer Mark Gordon

Jake worked with his friend Mark again on Source Code, with Jake hand picking Duncan for the director's job.  Source Code was such a success for Gordan his production company went on to work on a TV series based on it.

So Jake got his chance to work again with Gordon, and it looks like Austin has again as well.  Gordon is the producer of  Ray Donovan.

Hmmm makes you kind of wonder if Gordon knew who he could get to play Tommy right off the bat.

And speaking of small world, guess who else in on Ray Donovan with Austin?

This guy.

Jonathan Schaech (pronounced Sheck)

And what makes that a small world?

Because Austin was at Jonathan's wedding to Austin's OTH co-star Jana Kramer, that lasted all of a minute.

It's a smaller world after all isn't it?

Reel vs. Real

Ten years ago Jake and Austin were working

on a  weather disaster movie  that was centered in New York.

Today its a real weather disaster  and New York is seriously feeling the effects.

Cancellations, flooding stations, water in lower Manhattan, power outages all that is left is the wall of water and a boat.

Back then they were this talking about this

Now it's this

Causality of the weather:

New Eyes' evening event for Jake at Colicchio & Sons had to be rescheduled due to the Hurricane.

Government Approved

Yeah I know. But sometimes Twitter can be inspiring.

Like this one:

Two hours into the conference and one thing is clear, people working for the US government love Jake Gyllenhaal- Funkier
Reasons the US Government Loves Jake Gyllenhaal

Made Santa a hot Marine. Hooah!
Al Gore might have brought the Powerpoint but Jake brought the sexy back to global warming.
He's the pin up boy in the CIA analyst offices
He's the face of the new "Protect Yourself against H1N1" campaign.
We all wanted to make out with Jen Aniston too.
He's the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad we can reason with.
Getting a little more governmental:

And it looks like other countries' government might get a chance to fall for him too. The G20 Summit is meeting in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh? G20? What the heck? Well President Obama said Pittsburgh because it has transformed itself from the city of steel to a center for high-tech innovation – including green technology, education and training, and research and development. But still thinking it's "the government just love Jake."

Having that many world leaders in one place means security. And in a city that has 3 rivers, 59 river bridges (of the 2000 bridges in Allegheny Co) and 6 major tunnels that cut through surrounding mountains, it means no one is getting anywhere anytime soon, and that's even before the protesters. There was mention that production of LaOD was moving 3o miles out of Pittsburgh to shoot the next couple of days.

It may also mean that Jake finds a bike or puts on the kicks and takes transportation matters into his own hands. Talk about a work out. Although looking like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on a bike might not be the best idea.

Oh Canada

We Celebrate Canada Day with the highest grossing Hollywood film in history to be filmed in Canada (as of 2007)

What movie ?

The film made $110,000,000 in DVD sales, bringing its total film gross to over $652,771,772. But there is probably another reason besides its big box office that many remember it for.

The cast of TDAT spent 6 monthsfrom November 2002 through March 2003 shooting in Montreal Canada. Now that's almost the entire winter. The irony is they shot almost all the winter footage indoors, in the warm and comfy Cité du Cinéma studio in the Technopark.

"We've shot most of our exteriors inside, re-creating the snow and ice, and the weather, because we had more control, and, frankly, it looks more real", said Day After Tomorrow producer Mark Gordon.

"Also, it would've taken a lot more time to do it outside. We have shot outside with very cold weather, but not a lot. We originally thought we were coming here for the weather but what we realized was that at the end of the day, from a creative stand-point, we were better off re-creating it (inside). To have the control and let us make it look the way we wanted it to look. And a lot of this movie is visual effects, which will create a lot of the extreme weather."

Roland Emmerich said making The Day After Tomorrow "has been a tough slog and it would've been even harder if they'd been shooting on the streets of Montreal at well-below-zero temperatures."

Winters in the North are not for the light hearted. Ski trips and visit family in Utah and Michigan still can't compare to an entire winter in Canada for a guy raised in Texas, or one from California either. It's cold, it gets dark early, the snow seems to never end. What do you during a long cold Canadian winter? Look for the best poutine around? Crazy Canadian dares like, which makes you lose your shirt faster? Canadian 4.0% beer , U.S 3.2. or Canadian Club? And what about the Canadian Geese? With Wimbledon starting to film that July, and Austin having get into world champion form you think he was looking for a practice partner?

And what do you do with so much downtime actually on the set as they set up the elaborate special effects? Crossword puzzles? Books? Or do you just get to know you co-stars very well?

And what's a holiday or a Roland Emmerich movie without some explosions? Here was a quote from Arjay Smith that always sticks out in my mind.

When you look back on filming, is there one day of filming that sticks out in your mind?

Wow. There’s one day that sticks out in mind but it wasn’t a filming day. The whole shoot was just awesome, everybody was just pleasant. But one day one of our actor’s trailers blew up and that was a frantic day. Thank God they weren’t in there.

Why? Because a trailer blew up. Well yeah, but I always thought it was more interesting that he said "one of our actor's trailers" blew up, meaning singular, but then said "Thank God they weren't in there" - which implies plural. Yes I know he could you using a formal pronoun, but don't you think he would have said Thank God he wasn't in there, or Thank God she wasn't in there. What do you think?

And to all of our Canadian friends - Happy Canada Day!

Movie Club Discussion

The first of the double feature of this month's movie discussion is The Day After Tomorrow. TDAT is about worldwide catastrophe and disaster, including multiple hurricanes, tornadoes, tidal waves, floods and the beginning of the next Ice Age due to the Greenhouse effect. Of course most at OMG would know this movie because it was how and where Jake and Austin met, filming the blockbuster for director Roland Emmerich. What did you like? What drove you crazy about it? What really the love story in the movie? Was is Sam and Laura? Or was it more like slash delight? What was the relationship between JD and Sam? What about the represenation of the government? What was the message that Emmerich was trying to show? Favorite parts? Favorite lines?

In addition to the basic disussion of TDAT, there is compartive discussion with the new Star Trek movie, by J. J. Abrams, who created a prequel to reinvent the Star Trek franchise while telling the beginning of the Star Trek saga.

What are the comparisons between the two movies? Are there similarities in the race to save humanity? The distructions of civilations and planets? What lessons are similar? What is the love story in Star Trek? Uhura & Spock? Or was it more like slash delight? Do you see similarities of Sam & J.D. with Kirk & Spock? What was the role of the government? What other similarities or differences did you see between the two movies? Did both have a similar message to them? What did you like or dislike about Star Trek? What was your favorite scene ? Favorite lines?

Little Penguin Big Hats

While there seems to be something about that first week of April that is special to Jake and Austin. You know that TDAT has to be special too.

From interviews with Austin talking about how Jake tried to make him break up during filming, to cooking adventures and snowballs at the premiere. Hard to believe it has been 5 years since TDAT came out and almost 7 years since meeting each other.

Who's at the top of those stairs ?

Jake was a charmer with a lot of goofiness during his press for the big blockbuster. Some of you might have already seen this one, but it is too funny not post.

And it answers all those burning questions.

You thinks the Red Penguin that makes the man but Jake confesses you need the power of computers to make the man look good.

Jake's abnormal head size (now you think about all the new hats - you know no one can borrow them, well unless they are kind of tall and large, nothing tiny do not try) and it runs in the family.

Uncle Anders - once lived in Mineaopolis - but now Jake's gotta learn to say Hello Miami!!

A Tsunami did really roll through New York and Roland captured it.

And of course Jake watches Maury.
