Missed Independence

Nightcrawler is the type of film that the Independent Spirit is about: small and smartly made, not originally funded by a studio, edgy, taking risks in storytelling that the studio system wouldn't risk.

The success of  Nightcrawler has carried past the critic's reviews and on to acclaim at the Independent Spirit awards.

Attending the awards director Dan Gilroy and his wife (and Jake's co-star) Rene Russo were the biggest representative of Nightcrawler.

At the awards Nightcrawler won two:

BEST SCREENPLAY - Dan Gilroy Nightcrawler

BEST FIRST FEATURE (Award given to the director and producer)
Nightcrawler
Director: Dan Gilroy
Producers: Jennifer Fox, Tony Gilroy, Jake Gyllenhaal, David Lancaster, Michel Litvak

Sadly Jake was not there but back in NYC with Constellations which ends its run in mid March.

While Jake was able to attend the Golden Globe in January,  it is interesting that he was unable to attended the biggest weekend in Hollywood.  For all the talk about him making film choices to position himself back into the award race, his absence is notable.

If he was really campaigning wouldn't he be in LA? ( Check this out about Oscar campaigning)  Maybe not presenting an award since his movie wasn't nominated, at it would be a bit awkward, but at least a part of the Academy scene.

Even more so the Independent Spirit award.  They are Jake's sweet spot, he came up an indie darling, and it is those films and that indie spirit where he really shines.  Jake's success is wrapped in independent films, and it is there where he could have the freedom both on and off screen that could bring him work-life balance.

OMG catch up:

So what's Jake been up to?

And Austin?

I woke up early to finish The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt. Impressive woman and writer from Mississippi. Wow.  - AUS10

Although the painting by Carel Fabritius would have been far more interesting if the Goldfinch was chained to an actual fish (perch). - AUS10

Sometimes it's easy to forget that there is a reason for OMG a bit bigger than just a little blog that friends stop by to talk about Jake and Austin.

OMG wants to keep the reminder of their story from past to present.  So to that point OMG's going revisit and keep posting all those pictures, that seem to be getting "lost" out there in the big gossip round up.

First up for OMG's Picture This:

And as for the winter of Special's discontent:

Who knew there were Alps at MIT -  but this winter there is:

Dang Jake you could've filmed Everest right here and with REAL snow.

Like a sister

Jake stopped by the Today show Tuesday morning to talk with Savannah Guthrie about Constellations and Nightcrawler along with his Golden Globe nomination.

Savannah had gone to see Constellations and was talking about the unconventional love story.

And so was Lainey in her column.

Who wondered if it was real dating or method dating.

Sounds like she got her answer:
Constellations began previews on December 16 and I heard from an acting student, “A”, who went to see the show twice before Christmas. Though they’re still working through some details in the direction and while at times it got kinda messy, I’m told the chemistry between Ruth and Jake is, indeed, special and Ruth’s performance, in particular, is extraordinary.

By the way, at the end of both shows, when the actors come out to applause, Jake apparently had his hand on the back of Ruth’s neck the entire time.

For what it’s worth though, the acting student was able to meet both later on outside the theatre for photos and advice. Here’s how she describes the vibe between them:
“On stage, definite love. Off stage? They definitely throw off a sibling vibe.”
 Who da' thunk? ; )

Lost in Twit-lation

People tweeted out a picture of Jake with this tweet:

 People magazine (@peoplemag)
12/29/14, 05:30

Hello Jake Gyllenhaal and Jake Gyllenhaal's facial hair http://peoplem.ag/r6mCg5q

Then mysteriously the caption was this when you went to the People site:

OFF BROADWAY

Away from the Broadway stage, Jake Gyllenhaal keeps close to Constellations costar Ruth Wilson on a Saturday walk through N.Y.C.

So did the tweeter from People get a whisker too close to the truth in it's awkwardness?

Sweet as honey

Admin Note:  Yes today (12/19) is Jake's Birthday, so it will be a Three-for posting his 34th to catch up and celebrate.

Recently Playbill interviewed Jake and Nick Payne on how they came together to  work on Constellations (breakfast) and it seemed from all the gushing it would make you think they were sweet on each other.  Mutual appreciation club indeed.

Jake kidded that he was spending a lot of time with bees and honey to prepare but he did talk about the relevancy of his character, Roland, being a beekeeper.

"A beekeeper may see the elegance of the universe displayed in the lives of bees, but we're all driven by the idea of finding our purpose."

Jake also spoke of actors who he admired:

"Actors that I really admire always find their way back to the stage," he says. "Denzel Washington, Liev Schreiber… my sister."

Interesting list.  We saw Jake recently with Denzel, who both share the same director in Antoine Fuqua, and well Maggie is Maggie.  But hmmmm... Liev....
how is that connection?

Oh yeah

Happy Hanukkah!!

Peeks and Sneaks

Admin Note:  Yes today (12/19) is Jake's Birthday, so it will be a Three-for posting his 34th to catch up and celebrate.

Tuesday night Constellations opened in previews which gives the cast a chance to perform and tweek those things that come up before the play's opening night January 13th.

But not being in NYC at the moment mean that you miss getting a first look:

Something you might not know about Jake's co-star Ruth Wilson.  She is a part of the critically acclaimed series The Affair.

Happy Hanukkah!!

Relational Relationships

As Jake begins previews for Constellation, his Broadway debut, a lot of attention has begun in the press about the unconventional love story between a physicist  and a beekeeper.

Vogue recently sat down with Jake and Ruth to talk about the time traveling tale of relationships and Jake spoke about how it makes him think all the permutations of relationships.

“Times when I’ve approached somebody and they haven’t been interested, or someone’s approached me and I haven’t been interested, or maybe things felt really, really right but it still didn’t work out—every incarnation possible. We’ve all had those moments.”

Wonder if made him think of everything gender neutral too, just like his quote.

Happy Hanukkah!!

Curl up and Dye

Last week Jake was all button up walking around town

Then after leaving rehearsals eagle eyes noticed something a little different with his hair (after noticing that super warm  Irish wool sweater he was sporting)

But it was definitely obvious in these pictures from this week of Jake leaving after lunch at Bar Pitti.

Jake's not only sporting some darker locks but with a twist.  From the pictures it looks like Jake has bit of a body wave perm up top.

Wonder if he was inspired

Now they can share #curlyhairboyproblems

But don't let me him talk you into straightening it back at home.

Stars align

The  NY Times interviewed several of the big screen stars who are taking the Broadway stage this season and getting their take on their new roles.  The interview include Bradley Cooper, Glen Close, Patricia Clarkson, Jake's first "crush" Martha Plimpton, Alessandro Nivalo, and Jake's sister Maggie.

“It’s less about string theory than about love,” said Gyllenhaal of his role as a beekeeper who falls for a physicist in “Constellations,” the new play by the British playwright Nick Payne. The 33-year-old actor has performed on smaller New York stages, but this is his Broadway debut. “If you know anything about love or have experienced it in any way, you might know more about string theory than you think you do.”

Not only are Jake and Maggie on Broadway at the same time, they are also being nominated at the same time for their work. Jake for Nightcrawler and Maggie for An Honorable Woman.  Congratulations to both brother and sister on their Screen Actors Guild nominations.

Wiggle Waggle

With Jake in rehearsals for Constellations,  he's trying to get into his character Rupert, the beekeeper.

No doubt Austin got into the spirit of things to help him out.

But will he simulate the bee dance bees do to attract their queen?

It's all about the waggle.   And Austin's got a what it takes to waggle.

Wonder if Jake will wear the crown or the helmet? ; )

Turkey Trot

Jake stopped by The Late Show to chat with Dave on Thanksgiving Eve. He promoted Nightcrawler (with a interesting question from Dave about unions)  as well as Constellations which opens in previews next month.

They didn't talk turkey, but the conversation went to salmon.

Earlier in day Jake was took a picture at The Rose Center for Earth and Space.

Brushing up on physics to understand his Constellation co-star's part, perhaps?

And as Thanksgiving finished up we saw Jake out for a walk in NY.

 No Starbucks this time.
 Just Leo.

Hope everyone had a sweet Thanksgiving!

Reading, Reading and Beekeeping

Jake was one of the few who joined his sister and the original cast for a reading of
“The Real Thing” at the Beatrice Inn.   Graydon Carter and Tom Stoppard hosted a dinner for guests including Christine Baranski, who played Charlotte in the original 1984 Broadway production, and Cynthia Nixon, who played Baranski’s daughter.

Jake joined the party which included Stephen Sondheim, Victor Garber, Robert Caro, Gay Talese and Fran Lebowitz.

This time Cynthia Nixon will play Charlotte with Maggie and Ewan McGregor joining her in the revival that opens at the end of the month. Previews begin this week.

Jake did some reading of his own and for a good cause as others joined him this evening for Words of War to benefit the Headstrong Project for War Veteran's.

Just announced two-time Olivier Award winner Ruth Wilson will star opposite Jake  in the American premiere of Constellations. Jake is Roland a beekeeper, Wilson will play Marianne, a physicist.

Wilson will make her Broadway debut in Constellations having previously won Olivier Awards for Anna Christie and A Streetcar Named Desire. She received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for the 2006 television adaptation of Jane Eyre. Other screen credits include Luther and the upcoming Showtime series The Affair.
