The NY Times interviewed several of the big screen stars who are taking the Broadway stage this season and getting their take on their new roles. The interview include Bradley Cooper, Glen Close, Patricia Clarkson, Jake's first "crush" Martha Plimpton, Alessandro Nivalo, and Jake's sister Maggie.
“It’s less about string theory than about love,” said Gyllenhaal of his
role as a beekeeper who falls for a physicist in “Constellations,” the
new play by the British playwright Nick Payne. The 33-year-old actor has
performed on smaller New York stages, but this is his Broadway debut.
“If you know anything about love or have experienced it in any way, you
might know more about string theory than you think you do.”
Not only are Jake and Maggie on Broadway at the same time, they are also being nominated at the same time for their work. Jake for Nightcrawler and Maggie for An Honorable Woman. Congratulations to both brother and sister on their Screen Actors Guild nominations.
"If There is" is on a break starting today (Nov 26) thru to D-day (Dec 7), so what will Jake be doing?

Well at least part of the time. And don't think it's a trip to keep the accent up to snuff.
Jake is scheduled for several interviews while in England, including something he has never done before.
That is going on the Graham Norton show.
Jake is going to brave the comedy chat show for the first time, and he is joining Joan Rivers, and Top Gear presenters Jame May and Jeremy Clarkson, and singer Ke$ha.
Taped earlier next week, the show will be first shown on BBC One, Dec 8th. The episode will then be on BBC America a week or two later.
But can Jake survive Joan the lady who left her filter with her first face so long ago?
And with the Top Gear guys give Jake grief for being a bachelor who is driving a family truckster of an Audi. And the thought of Jake and Ke$ha could just send you running into the night.
And on The Graham Norton show, Jake can't just chat and go. Ohhh no no, on Graham Norton, the guests stay on the couch the whole hour, it's the audience that might get boot before the show ends.
Maybe his sister can give him some tips.
Keep your eyes peeled for mentions of Jake in England starting now, he could have left as early as today. But did he go alone? Guess it's a wait and see too.
It was just announced that Viola Davis is joining Jake, Paul Dano, Hugh Jackman and Melissa Leo in Dennis Villeneuve's thriller Prisoner.
Viola's latest movie was Won't Back Down and who was her co-star?
Maggie.

While Austin leaves the Tree behind, Jake's getting back to his roots so to speak, via his Big Sis.Maggie will be on the April 22nd episode of The PBS series “Finding Your Roots”. No word if she which side of the tree she is on the search for, but it maybe more insight on the Achs, the maternal side of Maggie and Jake's heritage. Both of Jake's grandparents were physicians on his mom's side of the family. His maternal grandmother Ruth, who passed away before he and Maggie were born, was a medical researcher who discovered that the palm-print patterns found on babies born to mothers who had German measles early in their pregnancies were signs to hidden but serious health abnormalities. His grandfather Samuel Achs was a surgeon. Also on the April 22nd episode will be Robert Downey Jr.
Move over Masters and Johnson. It's the Gyllenhaal Sarsgaard's who are taking over with their cinematherapy approach to human sexual response. First it's assessing the situation with Peter in Kinsey. For men having trouble rising to the occasion It's the little blue pill and Jake's movie Love and Other Drugs. For the ladies, who in the words of Glimmer Twins "Can't get no Satisfaction", it's the next movie Maggie's working on with Hugh Darcy and Rupert Everett. You've seen this picture before But look at this picture of Austin at the Wrap Party for Full Count/Lenexa 1 Mile down at a Westport bar in KC. Notice anything?
So not only was Jake out with Austin so soon after meeting, but obviously Jake had introduced Austin to his sister. Looks like she knew from the beginning what her brother had found and who he had found it with, that's pretty significant. Just another little thing that shows that this was serious right from the beginning.
And it also makes you look at the timeline with a different perspective.

Well Jake it seems was still on The Vineyard, as of last week, according to the NY Daily News He, Maggie and Peter went down to road to check out what was playing at the Chilmark Community Center. On Wednesday, Caroline Kennedy, "Jarhead" star Jake Gyllenhaal, his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal and her husband Peter Sarsgaard checked out "The Tillman Story," Amir Bar-Lev's documentary about the death of pro-football-player-turned Army Ranger Pat Tillman that hits theaters this month. The film, which looks into the military's cover-up of Tillman's death from friendly fire in Afghanistan in 2004, was hosted by Russell Baer, a soldier in Tillman's platoon, at the Chilmark Community Center in Martha's Vineyard. And a source at the screening tells us that Jake, hung around "to meet Baer" after the screening.
ESPN did an incredible story about Pat and friend Russ back in 2006.
"One day, God willing, Russell Baer was going to tell his son this story. One day, after the boy's heart and brain had healed, he was going to point to that picture on the kid's bedroom shelf of the man doing a handstand on the roof of a house, take a deep breath and say, Mav, that's a man who lived a life as pure and died a death as muddy as any man ever to walk this rock, and I was there for both. That's the man, when your heart stopped for an hour and they slit you open neck to navel, who I prayed to because ... well, because you wouldn't exist if he hadn't died, and I wouldn't be half of who I am if he hadn't taught me how to live. That's Pat Tillman, the man you take your middle name from, and I've been waiting for you to ask since the day you were born.
Russ never got that chance: Maverick Patrick Baer died on Monday. So now Russ has Pat's story stuck in his heart...."

What if he told Pat's mom that her son had been blown away by his own men and suddenly found himself in a media firestorm, only for Army investigators to uncover evidence proving otherwise? On the saddest day of his life, he was going to have to squirm and evade the people who loved Pat most.
All he wanted to do, in those few days at his grandmother's house before Pat's service, was sleep, find the bottom of a few beer bottles and stare into space, but his cousin yanked him out of bed and dragged him to -- of all places -- the Sunshine Saloon Sports Bar in Pleasanton, Calif. A young woman named Tammy Wright happened to be sitting at a table there, and though in a mood to meet no one, Russ met the love of his life on a night when he would've been 7,500 miles away if Pat hadn't died. Funny, Pat had told Russ that his old girlfriend was all wrong for him." .
Jake gave Maggie some sound advice about the Oscar race:
"There isn't actually anything at the end of the rainbow," "It's a lot of fun and enjoy it in that spirit. If you make it mean too much more than that, you'll probably go astray."
And with today being Shrove Tuesday,(Pancake Day) feel like we must pass on some advice ourselves. The rainbow is your own journey. But pancakes we got to step in. Because when uncle cred can't save them, that's bad, really bad, you got things stack up against you.
So Jake, listen up? Here's some pancake advice.
Go Fresh - Use the freshest ingredients you can get your hands on. And maybe not go for the scratch, and just break down and use a mix like the rest of us.
Don't Batter the Batter - Don't over mix. Pancake batter should be mixed just until the wet and dry ingredients are combined. Don't worry about lumps. You want them. They'll cook out on the griddle.
Get a Griddle - Cast iron or electric griddles make great pancakes because they heat evenly and give you plenty of room to work.
Go Easy on the Greasy - A light coating of oil or non-stick spray at the start is all you need for most pancakes.
Ladle with Care - Using a quarter-cup ladle held very close to the griddle, pour the batter gently so that it spreads in even circles.
Keep it Neat - Don't let pancakes merge into each other, and avoid moving them while the first side is cooking - they'll brown more evenly if you leave them alone.
Flip with Finesse - Pancakes are ready to flip when their surface is covered with bubbles, their edges look dry and a peek at their undersides reveals a golden brown color. Turn them gently, barely lifting them off the griddle.
Finish with a Flourish - Presentation makes all the difference. Warm the plates. Serve pancakes with real maple syrup, warmed slightly, and softened or whipped butter. Garnish with fruit or nuts.
Know When to Hold 'Em - Keep pancakes warm by placing them on a cookie sheet between layers of cloth towels. They'll hold in the oven at 250°F for up to 10 minutes till you have the whole batch done.
Of course you could just go out for a Rooty Tooty Fresh and Fruity and be done with it.
Or maybe head over Ikea get you Swedish on.
Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving, when the faithful confessed their sins to the local priest and recieved forgiveness before the Lenten season began. Historically, Shrove Tuesday also marked the beginning of the 40-day Lenten fasting period when the faithful were forbidden by the church to consume meat, butter, eggs or milk. So if you had these things what do you do? Use up the milk, butter and eggs no later than Shrove Tuesday. So you add with the addition of a little flour, and do you get... pancakes..

With Maggie's Oscar nomination it means that three of the four Gyllenhaals have been nominated for an Academy Award, mom Naomi was nominated for her screenplay for Running on Empty, in 1988. They join a pretty impressive group of those who keep it in the family.
Joel and Ethan Coen, are the first siblings to win the directing honor for their movie No Country For Old Men, and only the second duo to share Hollywood's top filmmaking honor following Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins for 1961's West Side Story.
The first, and only brother and sister to win acting Oscars were Lionel Barrymore, who won the Best Actor award for A Free Soul (1930/31), and Ethel Barrymore, who won the Best Supporting Actress award for None But the Lonely Heart (1944).
Jake and Maggie join other brother-sister acting nominees including Eric and Julia Roberts, and Warren Beatty and Shirley MacLaine. Julia won her Oscar, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2001 for her performance in Erin Brockovich, after back to back nominations for Steel Magnolias and Pretty Woman. Her brother Eric was first to get a nomination for nomination for his supporting role in Runaway Train (1985). Warren Beatty won for directing "Reds" while sister Shirley, got her first nomination in "Some Came Running" with Frank Sinatra in 1959, but it wasn't until 1983 that she finally won an Academy Award for "Terms of Endearment."
The only brothers nominated for acting Oscars were River Phoenix as Best Supporting Actor for Running on Empty (1988) and Joaquin Phoenix as Best Supporting Actor for Gladiator (2000).
The only mother-daughter duo to have won performance Oscars are Judy Garland (a special juvenile award winner) for The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Liza Minnelli (as Best Actress) for Cabaret (1972). Vincent Minnelli, Garland's husband and Minnelli's father, also won a Best Director Oscar for Gigi (1958).
Diane Ladd and Laura Dern are the first and only mother-daughter acting pair nominated for the same film in Oscar history. They both received nominations for Rambling Rose (1991). Add and Laura's father Bruce Dern was Oscar nominated Best Supporting Actor for Coming Home (1978) which. that makes them the only mother-father-daughter acting group with Oscar nominations.
Two pairs of sisters have competed against each other, nominated simultaneously, for the same Best Actress award. Joan Fontaine in Suspicion (1941) defeated sister Olivia de Havilland in Hold Back the Dawn (1941) Vanessa Redgrave for Morgan (1966) went up against her Lynn Redgrave in Georgy Girl (1966) with them both losing to Elizabeth Taylor. The only other sisters to have received acting Oscar nominations , supporting in this case, are Meg Tilly for Agnes of God (1985) and Jennifer Tilly for Bullets Over Broadway (1994).
Don't count out dads. Kirk Douglas was nominated three times; Champion (1949), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), and Lust for Life (1956) while his son Michael Douglas got a nom for Wall Street (1987). Another father son team was Raymond Massey received in a nomination for Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940) and forty years later his son Daniel Massey for received his for Star!
Michael, Vanessa, and Lynn Redgrave are the only father-daughter-daughter group among acting nominees. Michael's single nomination was for Mourning Becomes Electra (1947).
And the father daughter combo? Well, Ryan O'Neal was nominated for Best Actor for Love Story (1970)and Tatum O'Neal for Best Supporting Actress for Paper Moon (1973). Jon Voight won for Best Actor for Coming Home (1978) and then daughter Angelina Jolie won Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted (1999). Acting great Henry Fonda won for Best Actor for On Golden Pond (1981) and while daughter Jane snagged two Best Actress awards for Klute (1971) and Coming Home (1978). And the Fonda's made history as the only father-daughter duo nominated for the same film for On Golden Pond.
The Fonda's made history again as the only father-son-daughter Oscar nominees. Peter made that happen with his nomination as Best Actor for Ulee's Gold (1997).
This year's best picture nominee, Up in the Air, is the first time in 15 years that a father/son producing have been up for Best Picture. The last time was Mario and Vittorio Cecchi Gori for Il Postino in 1995.
There has been only one director in Oscar history to direct both his father and his daughter in Academy Award-winning performances. In 1948 John Huston directed his father, Walter Huston, to a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.” Thirty-seven years later he directed his daughter Anjelica to a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in “Prizzi’s Honor.”
The Hustons are one of two families with three generations of Oscar winners. With Sofia Coppola’s win in 2003 for her original screenplay for “Lost in Translation,” the Coppolas became the second family to have three generations of Oscar winners, Carmine and Francis Ford preceded her.
But the family with most nominations and wins? The Newman's, and not Paul and Joanne.
Six members of the extended Newman family, have been responsible for much of the music you hear in movies. Brothers Alfred, Lionel and Emil and second generation Thomas, David and Randy(yup that Randy Newman) have earned a total of 81 nominations,with 11.
But if all my research is right, and I may have missed something, it looks like the Gyllenhaals have made their own Oscar history, being the only mother-daughter-son nominees.
Everyone has a least one person to call them on their sh... A person you can never pull one over on. They can take one look at you and know you're lying through your teeth. It's not always about the big stuff but also the little stuff too, like saying you're doing good when things are lousy or dinner is great, when it isn't.
Jake's got that with Maggie. “If you have a real relationship with someone in real life they will call you out on it if you are being fake,” “I have worked with my sister in movies before and I can’t pull anything with her." “She knows when I’m faking and when I’m not. She has caught me out before — in real life too. That is all my sister does! That is her primary job in my life.”
I don't think Maggie is the only person who is that for Jake, but it's good know that she is one of them.
While there will always be a thread of competition and sibling rivalry between them, you also know that they are both there for each other in what matters most.
