HISTORIC!

No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family."

"In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their pleas is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfilment for themselves Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization's oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right."

What a historic day for the United States.  The last block of equality to fall.  Truly all are now equal.  Equal to love who they love and be recognize.

The response is overwhelming and was immediate from around the world. Talk about the lives of so many changing in an instant.

Many  headlines today started with Hollywood's response to marriage equality and shared the tweets of individuals celebrating this historic ruling.

But that is not Hollywood's response.  Those are individual responses.

The  real Hollywood response that needs to be seen is to stop this idea that leading stars and storylines must be straight.

Hello Hollywood look around..... the world is beyond the idea that the only way is straight.    Bring the equality to Hollywood  that the world is embracing.

The world is moving ahead of you .... catch up.

Speaking of catching up....

Today Sundance Channel had a poll of those LGTB movie couples that they would like to see married.   And what couple led the votes?

Oh you know it.

Brokeback broke barriers when it came to the screen. But it was ahead of time for many.

Looking back from there to now it is monumental how much change has happened.

Hollywood catch up and those in Hollywood you too

The world is different place, those baby steps

can become strides of pride  now.

Night at the Round Table

Jake along with fellow actors Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, Forest Whitaker, Michael B. Jordan and Josh Brolin are featured on the cover of the November 8th issue of The Hollywood Reporter.

The trade's annual series kicked off with a candid conversation featuring the six award winning actors discussing what it's like to be an actor in Hollywood from Brazilian waxes, deals, lousy auditions, mistakes and sacrifices.

And some of Jake's answers:

Let's start with a question about reinvention. How do you not get stale?

JAKE: Bills.

[OMG Note - how many bills does a "bachelor" who looks like he only owns 3 different pairs of pants and 5 different shirts have?]

Have you ever thought of quitting?

JAKE: [Smiles.] It's only appropriate as an indulgent actor to think about quitting 'cause it's such an intense job.

Jake on his biggest mistake:

"The biggest mistake that I've made is not really admitting to myself that filmmaking is a director's medium. We all get into situations where we're working with people, and we try to control that. [But] I realized, once I'm gone, that's going to be this director's vision from here on out. I did that in the past a lot, and now, giving all of that up is such a beautiful and relieving thing."

On the family business:

"My family has been in the movie business — my weirdly extended and immediate family. The movies are such a big part of our interactions. It makes me anxious being around a table here because this particular scenario just makes me feel like the dinner table. (Laughs.)"

And Jake as Frodo? Really?!?!???

“I remember auditioning for The Lord of the Rings [the role of Frodo] and going in and not being told that I needed a British accent. I really do remember Peter Jackson saying to me, ‘You know that you have to do this in a British accent?’ We heard back it was literally one of the worst auditions.”

Here's the almost hour long uncensored discussion:

Convention Time

Hollywood is a industry town. They don't build cars or make widgets, they make movies. And it is town based on movies - not just on movie stars, it supports carpenters, electricians, caterers, hair stylists, seamstresses, set designers, animators, middle managers, accounting departments, directors, and yes studio heads. The Academy Awards is the big convention of the year. Everybody shows up for one of the different events. It's not very different from other industries. You have to talk up your products, some are promoting what they did, other are there to keep current and look to make business contacts. Networking, looking for work, and slinging the bull by the bar. Is it any different from anything you've gone to?

It is just a big business convention, one that brought in $130 million for LA, the parties are like those hospitality suites, the awards show, the key note address recognition to those who has outstanding performance, the outstanding salesman of the year award, remember who they lost in the past and its a little YEAH US convention - to make them all feel better and boost morale for the next year.

And before all the brouhaha about walking into a party together. How more business can you get. But seriously - why do you want to put yourself through that cause you know he's gonna look better than you. I mean he was born to be in a tux. The best dress next to that could look like Mrs Ropers Muu Muu. Someone said carpooling I say Bingo. Annnnd who was the one who had to do the red carpet? The one who's movie is opening in 3 weeks. ABC people - ABC. Always Be Closing. You got to get some projects set up for next year cause you have nothing on the planner.

Now look around at the award crowd, how many of them are doing the same damn thing, and some of them even worse, those who stood up front married and with kids, and it's all a cover. Is there outrage over Franco bringing a date? Or comments about Pattinson or Hirsch not? That the host has as many rumors or that one of the biggest box office makers who presented last night has more?

Last night was a business convention that the public gets to watch. It's up to you if you get sucked into the spin of it or not. Will you buy this year's product?

What it should be about is not who walked with who, or where they walked, or dresses, or jewelry. It should be about the movies, the story - the performances on screen.

Congratulations to Heath's family and Matilda that have the recognition of his accomplishments of his career. Congratulations to Milk for breaking down more walls, and to the cast and crew who showed support of equality with the White Knot. To Sean and Kate, for roles, and performances that showed their talents as the consumate actors they are. Congratulations to Slumdog Millionaire for a story that captured so many. And congrats to Buttons - who received the awards they excelled at.

Banking on It

Forbes.com came out with their Star Currency listing. "The project's primary goal is to gain insight from the global entertainment industry regarding 1,400-plus actors in today's worldwide marketplace from a financial perspective. Many elements contribute to the financing of a film as well as its ultimate theatrical box-office performance and post-theatrical life--the actor's involvement being one of the central components. This confidential survey, while subjective, seeks to evaluate the actor's impact in a number of areas."

"Voters were asked to consider a number of elements regarding the actor's participation in a film as they applied in the market at the time of the survey. Criteria used were:

--The amount of financing that flows to a project is significantly determined by the individual actor's presence in a film.

--The individual actor's presence in a film guarantees theatrical distribution.

--The individual actor's presence significantly drives the film's theatrical box-office performance."

[Forbes]

The top ten is probably who you can all guess Will Smith top of the heap , with Johnny Depp, Leo, Angelina and Brad all tied for second, then Tom Hanks, Clooney, Denzel, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson rounding out the top ten.

Where did Jake rank? 52nd. But before discussion starts there are a few things about the list that are interesting.

There are only 8 actors under 30 who made the list. Only two actors ranked higher than Jake. Shia LeBeouf (rank 33) and Kiera Knightly (rank 42). There were 4 male actors under 30 who broke the top 100, besides Shia and Jake, Seth Rogen (86)and James McAvoy(86).

Shia looks to be more of action star, Seth seems to be covering comedy, and James and Jake? Where do they fit .... is HW slotting them into their leading man for that age group? Is Jake a traditional leading man? Or will he be more bankable as something else? Is this why he took PoP? What do you see him as?

Jake has talked about admiring Matt Damon's career path. Could you see him following a similar path over the next ten year?

Maggie was ranked at 200, and Peter at 214.

Unnecessary Lies

Right now I am reading the book The Girls: Sappho Goes to Hollywood by Diana McLellan. This book was suggested by Daff. Thanks Daff! :) I've just started it and already have come upon some interesting quotes. In trying to uncover the secret sexual lives of her subjects, McLellan found that lies, especially those that were both repeated and unnecessary, lead her to the truth more frequently than the so-called "true" reports. She writes-

"One big, unproven lie reveals far more than dozens of widely reported "truths"- once you understand why it was told." (Italics the author's.)

And a tiny bit later she says-

"Whenever I could document a consistent unnecessary lie, I fished more intently in the waters around it than elsewhere, hooking in as many sources as possible, arranging events in the correct sequence to determine cause and effect, applying what I knew to areas I did not know, and slowly triangulating my way toward the truth." (Also italics the author's.)

I've been kicking this idea of the unnecessary lie around in my head. It really does appear that Hollywood runs on lies, but are the typical lies that Hollywood tends to tell unnecessary lies? Would the Hollywood machinery really fall apart if these lies were not told? Who and what are these lies really protecting? And how does this all relate to Jake and Austin?

Here is a poll for your perusal. It is difficult because there are only two choices. That is intentional. Just give your best answer and don't overthink it. Go with your gut feeling. The definition of "unnecessary lies" is whatever YOU say it is.

If you said "yes," please say what you think the lie(s) are.

NOTE: OMG's Movie Club is again soliciting suggestions for our next movie! Let's hear what you all would like to watch next.

Hollywood, CA

Just thinking, after last night's Oscars, about the price of Hollywood success. Actors today know going in what it will be like for the successful- gossip, rumors, paparazzi following you, having to meet the unbelievably stressful and stringent Hollywood standards, the incredible difficulty of having a private life, etc. Obviously, despite all this, people still want to be famous and they still answer the call of Hollywood. My question to you today is, why?
