Matthew Mitcham has the chance to do something no other Australian athlete has ever done, win an Olympic Gold Medal after coming out as gay.
Mitcham currently ranked third in the has one of the best chances to bring gold home to Australia, after winning the 10-meter platform, his specialty, defeating both 2004 Olympic gold medalist Hu Jia of China and fellow Australian and 2004 silver medalist Matthew Helm at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix in this past May.
20 yr old diving champion and Olympic hopeful Mitcham came out in the Australian press during a profile interview for the upcoming Olympics. Out and open about his sexuality since he was fourteen, he really didn't think 
anything of the question posed by the Sydney Morning Herald. "It’s not really a big deal. It’s not like I’m a different person. It’s not like I was straight before. So nothing really has changed....I came out years ago. All that happened recently was that I was doing an interview with the Herald and there was a pretty innocuous question, ‘Who do I live with?’ and I just said ‘my partner Lachlan’. And the journalist was really excited – she thought it was absolutely wonderful!"
Mitcham met Lachlan during his break from the sport after being overwhelmed by combination of lingering injuries, academic pressure, and feeling overwhelmed. He reconnected with friends, hung out, hit the bars, all the things an aspiring Olympic hopeful did not have the time to do. Lachlan was with him during all of this and his return to the sport. "Mitcham credits that break with getting him as far as he’s come: 'I’m glad I took the time out, because if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be in this position now. I recovered physically, emotionally, and mentally—and I had a lot of fun.' "
Matthew also has a small support network in addition to Lachlan that have been there for him as he comes back as focused and competitive threat in diving. "His coach, Chava Sobrino, had faith in him when no one else did and resurrected his career. Former athlete Sarina Bratton cares for him like a son and fellow diver Alex Croak is a constant sounding board and his best friend."
Competing for the the gold would seem like the biggest challenge for this Olympic athlete, but getting funding for Lachlan to join him in Beijing was Matthew's biggest challenge. He applied for a support grant through the Johnson & Johnson’s Athlete Family Support Program. Thanks to the program, Lachlan will be there along with him mum, who is attending from the generosity of the Gay and Lesbian community.

Great spotlight. I will certainly be rooting for Matthew in the upcoming Olympics. Of course probably the best diver in history Greg Louganis is gay. Greg was not out as a competitor but came out after he was diagnosed as HIV positive.

Going back to the forthcoming wedding bells, I think this latest news story may prove to be the final straw for me (although I've thought that before and keep coming back).
What I find so disappointing is that Jake seems happy for his new demographic to be characterised by the Daily Mail, one of the most right wing, reactionary, homophobic rags around. If Jake does see his natural fanbase amongst the immigrant bashing, hang and flow 'em, bigots of Berkshire (apologises for anyone who lives there), then good for him.
Its just not the sort of guy I think alot of us thought he was.

Funny that if Jake proposed it would have been on the London-Paris trip and Reese goes home to LA and is seen everywhere and everyday in town last week [coffee, shopping, yoga, jogging, Swing Vote party premiere, hotel, with gf walking/lunch, getting nails done, getting Jamba Juice with Ava, I forgot what else] but the supposed leak comes from deep in the isolated N. I find those stories of out athletes very uplifting, probably because more than anything else sport plays a big role � both as an activity and as a source of inspiring models � in many kids' lives. And the fact that Mitcham was out at such a young age and still has many years of competition ahead of him is just wonderful.

The only thing that kind of gets me on this one is it's referencing Jake as being the one making the announcement. In the past, it's always been "friends", "insiders", "a close source", Atticus, "family barber", or whoever the heck else they can "quote".
If it is a drummed up story, it's an outright lie and that website oughta be ashamed of itself. It's one thing to name an anonymous source, but it'd be a whole other thing to put the story on the party itself, being Mr. Jacob. So bein's as they're saying Jake is the one saying it, that's what has me stroking my chin. Even though my head is saying I shouldn't be believing it.

re in hw a woman marrying a man who's gay: anthony perkins was bi and was married for a long time [he died] to berry berenson, who was fully aware of tony's other life. they were a good successful couple who didn't make a big deal out of it and who had a family together. berry unfortunatly was a passenger on one of the planes that flew into the wtc.
Getting back to today's post, does anybody know if the diving facilities are totally "indoor" this year? I wrote that Mitcham didn't have to worry about pollution but I'm having second thoughts since I'm certainly no diving expert.
Those who know about diving, do they have special breathing exercices to do before the competition?

Ryder denied the rumors in January when the NE claimed they were, a few months ago his pub., denied some Ok story, now her's does again. You would think that both publists would deny it on record on behalf of their clients.
Just watched that diving video and am looking forward to Olympic diving more than ever. The caliber of diving in that video is fantastic. I'm curious to see how Matt is covered at the Olympics. So many athletes who come out do it when they are single and there is no partner to talk about. Matt's out and is bringing his partner with him. He's a serious medal threat in a sport that is popular at the Games. It will be interesting to see how the press handles it. Hopefully enough folks are interested in the Olympics here so we can compare how things are covered by both the US press and internationally.
Re texting and praising the lord in church- the Mrs. has FORBIDDEN texting in the pews. I can only get away with it when she is not there and it is a boring sermon. Bell, if they both denied the rumours they wouldn't be able to keep it going :) The point of this is to play it out and play it out, then play it out again. They don't have to think about the endgame at this stage. My family could care less about Jake - as they frequently tell me - and they've all heard about the wedding and the canine ringbearer - that's the aim. This kind of reportage takes nothing out of Jake, Reese or anyone else - and all they need to do is get together for a photo sesh from time to time.

kacie, that's a good question on Atticus. Wouldn't you think he's probably got to be at least around 5 yrs? What I want to know is what happened to little Boo? I read somewhere that he didn't get along with Atticus but I don't remember now where I saw that. May've been someone else's comment on a blog. I still worry about Atticus being away from his owner for such long periods of time. Wouldn't you miss your dog? Or is that just naive on my part?

'They are all lies' - I think that if they were really dating they might have denied these rumors, but in a completely different way. I am quite sure they are just friends.
I think that they are all lies is the stuff about him asking her several times and she finally said yes a few weeks ago, the date Christmas/around his b-day, him yapping to the crew on POP about his plans, etc.
They have had plenty of opportunities to deny the relationship via People, etc. Noticed they didn't deny the moving in story on the front pages of Us or the other rag stories that have been swirling around for a yea and a half.
They wouldn't have denied this marriage rumor either except that the story was that she finally said yes, that would mean that they were actually engaged as opposed to working towards a marriage. The paps would be looking for an engagement ring.
People is still pimping them as a couple, not just headed for marriage. The same thing happened to S. Johannson and R. Reynolds, their reps denied the engagement rumors, then a month later they were engaged, but that's another story.

I finally saw TDK tonight. WOW..what a great ride. The best Batman movie ive ever seen. Heath was awesome. I was so impressed by his performance. Everyone in the theater was having so much fun. We were all talking to the screen and laughing at the Joker - we were all on a high for sure : D

I loved Glory but I cannot watch it again because it is soooo tragic. Doggone it, why did Heath always have unhappy movies? He was so magnificent, tho, you know? He told so much with his eyes and Naomi Watts is in this Ned Kelly. It is based on a true story and Heath has an Irish accent even though it's supposed to take place in Australia. Getting ready to start Four Feathers, even though I'm not going to finish it tonight.
Maybe they'll do a People or US Weekly cover saying, "They're Not Engaged!"

Thanks for a report on the movie PG. The funny thing about the fauxmance is that there seems to be a lot of people who aren't buying it but had not previously heard about Toothy Tile. So Reeke is kind of like a boomerang.

What the hell does 'or any of the reports" mean??? Its like a verb/word was left out.
I can't remember the names [participle, preposition?] but the sentence structure if you pickrd it apart would mean;
“They are not engaged.”
“They are not getting married."
“They are not any of the reports.”
If they aren't 'any of the reports' does that mean they aren't dating, the mile high club story was false and they aren't living together?

I guess that planting and denying wedding rumors is easier than actually booking and acting in good movies. 360 will do anything to distract us from yet another mini-pr disaster for Jake - PoP being delayed until 2010. First Nailed almost goes up in smoke and then PoP is delayed for another year.
Bad karma follows Jake around like a shadow, doesn't it? I wonder why the universe is so pissed?

The story has been pick up by UPI on the overnight wire. But just after most daily papers on the East Coast of the US have put their papers to bed and the first editions have run. Guess it will show up in the later editions (if it fits) or just hold for tomorrow's edition. Have to see what happens with the rest of the US newspapers. But bet you a buck that the denial gets picked up on the Monday entertainment news shows (Extra, Entertainment Tonight, E!Online , The Insider) with high number tuning in for the Brangelina babies. Impressive BWR.

I don't understand the whole thing. There was an awful lot of wasted energy spent on an entire fabrication. Just like a big bowl of whipping cream. Whipped & fluffed up by a big pr machine. But like whipping cream falls quickly, this story fell flat after a big publicized denial. And where was Jake during all of this? 1000 miles away, or so one would assume. It was like a mini tornado that swept through over the weekend and what did it leave? A sour taste in my mouth.
To quote ONTD "Future box office bomb POP delayed until 2010". Sure the PR team felt that they should get some positive Jake spin. Unfortunately, everything they plant about Reeke always makes Jake look more whipped. Karma seems to be paying Jake back for all the lies he promotes with Reeke. Brothers may or may not be a hit. Nailed will probably never see the light of day, but if it does, sound like a huge bomb. POP sounds like another bomb and by 2010 it may be competing with another Batman movie-that will definitely sink POP. Wonder when Reese is gonna pull the plug on the sinking ship and get out of Reeke. It's served it's purpose; it got Reese over the hump of dumped wife.
Don't know what kind of meter it is, but on People.com, Reese & Jake's "non-engagement" is not even one of the top 5 most-read stores yet. Brangelina's twins, of course, #1, followed by Nikki Blonsky's incident with her father.
